2003 Bmw M3 problems
The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986.
The initial model was available in a coupé body style, with a convertible body style made available soon after. M3 saloons were offered initially during the E36 (1994–1999) and E90 (2008–2012) generations. Since 2014, the coupé and convertible models have been rebranded as the 4 Series range, making the high-performance variant the M4. Variants of the 3 Series since then have seen the M3 produced as a saloon, until 2020, when the M3 was produced as an estate (Touring) for the first time, alongside the saloon variant.
E30 generation (1986–1991)
The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 Series and was intended to be a homologation special to satisfy the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring rules, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built. It was presented to the public at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, and began production from March 1986 to June 1991. The E30 M3 was mainly produced in the coupé body style, but limited volumes of convertibles were also produced.
The front splitter, the rear apron, sill panels, as well as changes to the body in the area of the rear window (C-pillar) and the bootlid improved the aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was flattened and the tailgate was made of light, glass-reinforced plastic raised by approximately 40 mm for better air flow. The changes over the rear of the car resulted in lower lift forces and better straight-line stability. In addition, the windscreen was glued in – not, as with the other E30 models, framed with a window rubber and piping. As a result, the M3 achieved a relatively low drag coefficient of Cd=0.33 instead of Cd=0.38 as in the standard 3 Series. The only exterior body panels the regular 3 Series and the M3 shared were the bonnet, roof panel, and sunroof.
The brake calipers, discs and master cylinder were unique to the M3 model.
The transmission was a Getrag 265 5-speed manual. European models were outfitted with a dogleg version with close ratios and a 1:1 ratio for fifth gear. North American models used a traditional shift pattern and had wider gear spacing with an overdriven fifth gear. A clutch-type limited-slip differential was standard equipment.
In 2004, Sports Car International named the E30 M3 number six on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. In 2007, Automobile Magazine included the E30 M3 in their "5 greatest drivers cars of all time" under their 25 Greatest Cars of All Time.

Common 2003 Bmw M3 problems
Based on the information provided in the sources, here are some common problems with the BMW M3 2003 based on complaints from owners:
- Connecting Rod Bearings: The 2003 BMW M3 had a recall related to the connecting rod bearings that hold the piston rods to the crankshaft. Incorrectly sized bearings from the factory led to oiling issues and premature engine failure. While many affected cars have had the recall done or their engines replaced, it's crucial to check if this work has been completed on a specific vehicle to avoid potential engine problems.
- VANOS Solenoid Seals: Another recall involved improper seals on the VANOS solenoid. Although this issue was not as widespread, it's essential to verify if the car has had this recall addressed to prevent any related problems.
- Rear Subframe Mounting: The E46 M3 suffered from a design flaw where the mounting points for the rear subframe could crack or tear over time, leading to serious chassis damage if left untreated. It's crucial to inspect these mounting points for any signs of damage or repairs to ensure the structural integrity of the vehicle.
- SMG Transmission Pump: For M3s equipped with the SMG automatic gearbox, the pump that actuates gear changes is prone to failure. Signs of a failing pump include unresponsive paddles or erratic shifting. Ensuring that this component has been replaced or is in good condition is vital to avoid transmission issues.
- Oil Leaks and Expensive Maintenance: The S54 engine used in the BMW M3 2003 requires expensive 10W-60 oil, leading to costly oil changes. Additionally, as the car ages, common "old car" problems like worn bushings, cracking rubber, and failing seals may start to appear, necessitating thorough inspections and potential repairs.
By addressing these common issues proactively and ensuring that any necessary recalls or repairs have been completed, owners of the BMW M3 2003 can mitigate potential problems and enjoy a more reliable driving experience.

As soon as I laid eyes on this car, I knew it was the one for me. The handling is truly impressive and will leave you in awe. I love pushing it to the limit, revving up to 8200 RPM and shifting in just 0.8 milliseconds. Even though I don't drive like a grandma, I still manage to get a decent 27 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg on the streets. It's worth noting that you may feel the bumps on rough roads. The M3 comes with a variety of options, including navigation, competition package, CSL, and luxury package.

An incredible car - much more than I ever imagined. I'm so glad you love the SMG and navigation!

I've been driving Bimmers since 1984. I've owned a 325, a 633, an M6, a 540 Sport, and this M3 is the best of the bunch! I got the premium package with a moonroof, heated seats, and all leather seats. Actually, this is my son's graduation present for next May. When I turn it over, I'll go pick up another one. It's just too damn much fun to drive!
-
Mortgage the house if you have to - This car is amazing!!! I now come to intersections and actually slow down to get a red light just so that I can show off the pure power of this car!! You must drive it to appreciate the responsiveness and handling. If you are a true driver, you must consider buying this car.

2003 6 speed Black with Red interior which is beautiful. Engine is unbelievable and handling is typical 3 series which is great. I also have a 330cic and this handles much better. Fuel tank is too small, I'm averaging about 20 miles per gallon so far. Sport mode is a little hard to get used to at slow speeds but it hauls ass and is a blast to drive. I highly recommend this car.

Congratulations on your 4th BMW! I hope you're enjoying the experience. I understand that you were interested in a convertible and this one is definitely a head-turner. However, if you're looking for a smoother ride, I would recommend the loaded 330 or Lexus IS instead of the racing clutch. The suspension is quite tight, so it might be uncomfortable on rough roads. Nonetheless, it's hard to deny that BMWs are known for their exceptional handling and driving experience. And of course, the attention it draws is always a plus!
