The BMW M2 is a version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range.

The first-generation M2 used the F8x chassis from the M3/M4, codenamed F87 and featured the BMW N55 series engine, while its successors, the M2 Competition and M2 CS, featured a twin-turbocharged engine developed by BMW M GmbH (S55 engine).

First generation (F87; 2016)

BMW M2 Coupé

The M2 was unveiled in Need for Speed in November 2015, before later premiering at the North American International Auto Show in January 2016. Production commenced in October 2015, first delivered early 2016 and the M2 was only available as a rear-wheel drive coupé. The M2 is powered by the turbocharged 3.0-litre N55B30T0 straight-six engine rated at 272 kW (365 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 465 N⋅m (343 lb⋅ft) between 1,450 and 4,750 rpm, while an overboost function temporarily increases torque to 500 N⋅m (369 lb⋅ft). The M2 features reinforced pistons, and has lighter aluminium front and rear suspension components resulting in a 5 kg (11 lb) weight reduction. The M2 is available with a 6-speed manual or with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. 0–100 km/h acceleration times are 4.5 seconds manual transmission models and 4.3 seconds for models equipped with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) but could be extended to 270 km/h (168 mph) with the optional M Driver's package. The M2 was used as a safety car in the 2016 MotoGP season.

Common 2021 Bmw M2 problems

The 2021 BMW M2 has been reported to have several common problems, including engine issues, coolant system problems, and engine smoke. These problems can be attributed to various factors, such as the age of the vehicle and the specific components used in its construction.

One of the most common engine issues reported by M2 owners is the development of oil leaks in the valve cover and its gasket. This issue is common to BMW cars in general, rather than the M2 specifically. The gasket is prone to leaking first, but lifting the plastic cover to replace it could cause it to crack. Therefore, it's best to replace both parts simultaneously. The rubber oil pan gasket is also prone to leaks, which can lead to engine smoke and overheating.

In addition to general BMW engine problems, there are a few specific to the M2's N55 engine. These include VANOS solenoid failure, leaking oil filter housing gasket, boost and charge pipe detaching/breaking from the throttle, and valve cover oil leak.

The M2 has also been reported to develop indicator problems, with the rear right indicator malfunctioning and resulting in an intermittent warning message. Other symptoms may include rapid blinking of the turn signal, turning light bulbs not working at the front or rear, and the turn signal indicator coming on and staying on. These issues can be caused by a bad turn signal switch, bulb, flasher relay, or wire, and can be dangerous to drive with, as well as causing the car to fail its MOT.

Another common problem reported by M2 owners is issues with the horn, which fails to make any noise when pressed. This issue can be caused by a bad relay, blown fuse, broken clockspring, faulty horn, or broken wire, all of which fall under the category of an electrical repair.

The M2's dual-clutch transmission (DCT) unit has also been reported to have issues, including shaking/shuddering, transmission overheating, and hesitation/delayed shifting. These issues can be caused by certain driving habits, such as putting the vehicle in neutral while idling at traffic lights, which isn't necessary. Unusual symptoms should be investigated as they will only worsen with time.

Finally, water pump failure is a common problem in the M2. This component is responsible for circulating coolant around the engine and radiator; if it breaks or malfunctions in any way, this is an urgent issue that needs repairing. Look out for the following symptoms of a failing water pump: coolant leaks, overheating, and a decrease in engine performance.

In conclusion, while the 2021 BMW M2 is a powerful and capable vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Owners have reported issues with the engine, coolant system, indicators, horn, transmission, and water pump. While some of these issues are common to BMW cars in general, others are specific to the M2's N55 engine. It is important for M2 owners to be aware of these common problems and to take appropriate action to address them if they occur.

Are BMW M2 reliable?

The reliability of the OG m2 is quite good. Some common issues that can happen is the valvetronic system tends to fail over time or very oddly when the car is brand new (maybe break in metals clogging the oil squirters, I have no clue).

Is the BMW M2 a good daily?

It's a great car and the different driving modes with comfort, M1 & M2 are incredible for different ways enjoying the car on the 40-50 mile daily commutes.

Will a BMW M2 competition hold its value?

I feel the M2 Comp will hold its value well, better than the OG version which was superseded by the Comp. The CS maybe given its low volume but was quite a jump in sticker, that can be mostly done aftermarket.

Are they discontinuing the M2?

Apple is also discontinuing the 15-inch MacBook Air M2, which was launched last year in June.

Positive 2021 Bmw M2 car reviews

I've been driving for over 30 years and have had the pleasure of driving hundreds of different vehicles, including owning a few dozen myself, such as 2 AMGs, 4 Porsches, a Lotus, and 6 M cars. Out of all of them, the M2 C is definitely one of my all-time favorites. It's a fantastic all-rounder, comfortable for daily use, but still fun and special when you really push it. It's an amazing vehicle, especially when you consider the price. Personally, I opted for the 6-speed manual and have no regrets. Only a select few have had the chance to drive it, but it never fails to impress. Update: It's been 3 years and 7k miles since I've owned it. I've looked at and driven other alternatives, but all it takes is a 10-minute drive to remind me why I love my M2 Comp. While I do wish the interior had an upgrade option for a leather dash and door caps, it's a relatively trivial concern as the mechanics are spot on. I still love my M2 Comp and see no reason to sell it.

I've owned many sports cars over the past 45 years of driving, but this one is my absolute favorite. It has an incredible amount of power, providing you with all the acceleration you could ever want. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even drift the car with ease. The handling is excellent, although I have noticed some slight tire squirm at times. However, you always feel in control. The car is quite stiff, but it's still comfortable enough to drive on reasonably smooth roads. On smooth roads, it's an absolute dream. Despite being a small coupe, it's surprisingly spacious and has generous storage in the trunk (plus the rear seat folds down). In my opinion, the muscular design with bulging fender wells looks fantastic. I opted for the DCT and I don't regret it - it makes for a great commuter car. With M-drive settings, you can customize shift points, exhaust opening, and more. The exhaust can be quite loud if you open the valves, but it's easy to close them and keep the noise down. With the transmission set to shift at low revs and the exhaust valves closed, it becomes a semi-luxury car - smooth, relatively quiet, and unobtrusive. But if you raise the shift setting to the highest of the three and open the exhaust valves, it rips and wails. Unlike the first-gen M2, this one has the real M motor (S55), real M mirrors, real M leather on the seats, and more. It also has the carbon fiber strut tower brace, which looks fantastic. Although there are some negatives - it can be a little jerky in stop-and-go traffic (put it in the mildest settings for best operation), gas mileage isn't terrific (I average about 22 MPG even with significant steady-state highway driving), and there are some rattles here and there, likely due to the stiff suspension - overall, it's a wonderful performance car that offers exclusivity. It's not often that I see another one while driving.

I'm 74 and have owned a lot of cars. I traded my Z4 for this little gem because of its superior road handling. I have no complaints except that I sometimes miss the convertible on a beautiful day. The Long Beach Blue color gets compliments from everyone everywhere. This is the best car I've ever owned.

  4. Jared Harber 2024-09-22

The BMW M2 Competition is an exceptional vehicle, with great design, styling, handling, and performance. As someone who is 6'2'', I find the interior design to be very spacious and comfortable. The material and fitment are of high standard, making it well worth the 58K I paid for it, which was a great deal at the time. If you have the means to pick one up, I highly recommend it. It's a great choice for anyone looking for a long-lasting car.

  5. Nathanial Wolf 2024-04-13

The car is just the right size, handles great, has impressive speed, and offers ample room for two people along with good luggage space. It is reasonably priced and works perfectly as an everyday driver. But most importantly, it is incredibly fun to drive, even more so than my E46.
