The BMW M2 is a version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range.

The first-generation M2 used the F8x chassis from the M3/M4, codenamed F87 and featured the BMW N55 series engine, while its successors, the M2 Competition and M2 CS, featured a twin-turbocharged engine developed by BMW M GmbH (S55 engine).

The M2 was unveiled in Need for Speed in November 2015, before later premiering at the North American International Auto Show in January 2016. Production commenced in October 2015, first delivered early 2016 and the M2 was only available as a rear-wheel drive coupé. The M2 is powered by the turbocharged 3.0-litre N55B30T0 straight-six engine rated at 272 kW (365 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 465 N⋅m (343 lb⋅ft) between 1,450 and 4,750 rpm, while an overboost function temporarily increases torque to 500 N⋅m (369 lb⋅ft). The M2 features reinforced pistons, and has lighter aluminium front and rear suspension components resulting in a 5 kg (11 lb) weight reduction. The M2 is available with a 6-speed manual or with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. 0–100 km/h acceleration times are 4.5 seconds manual transmission models and 4.3 seconds for models equipped with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) but could be extended to 270 km/h (168 mph) with the optional M Driver's package. The M2 was used as a safety car in the 2016 MotoGP season.

Common 2018 Bmw M2 problems

The BMW M2, produced in 2018, is a high-performance sports car with impressive features and capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain issues and problems. This article will explore common problems reported by owners of the BMW M2, focusing on the 2018 model.

1. Engine Problems:

The BMW M2's N55 engine is generally considered reliable, but it can still experience issues over time. Common problems include oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and the rubber oil pan gasket.

Additionally, the N55 engine in the M2 can experience specific issues, such as VANOS solenoid failure, leaking oil filter housing gasket, boost and charge pipe detaching/breaking from the throttle, and valve cover oil leaks. While engine failure is rare in the M2, these specific problems can occur and may require repair.

2. Indicator Problems:

The BMW M2 is known for sometimes developing indicator problems, particularly with the rear right indicator. This can result in an intermittent warning message, rapid blinking, or non-functioning turning light bulbs at the front or rear. These issues can be caused by a bad turn signal switch, bulb, flasher relay, or wire. If any of these symptoms apply to your car, it is recommended to have a mechanic check the problem as soon as possible, as driving with faulty indicators can be dangerous and may cause your car to fail its MOT.

3. Horn Problems:

Some BMW M2 owners have reported issues with the horn, which fails to make any noise when pressed. This problem can be caused by a bad relay, blown fuse, broken clockspring, faulty horn, or broken wire, all of which fall under the category of electrical repairs.

4. DCT Transmission Problems:

The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) unit in the BMW M2 is strong but can experience issues related to its complexity. Common problems include shaking/shuddering, transmission overheating, and hesitation/delayed shifting.

5. Water Pump Failure:

Water pump failure is a common problem in the BMW M2. The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant around the engine and radiator, and if it breaks or malfunctions, it can lead to urgent repair needs. Symptoms of a failing water pump include coolant leaks, which should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the engine.

In conclusion, while the BMW M2 is generally considered a reliable vehicle, it can still experience certain issues and problems. Owners of the 2018 BMW M2 should be aware of these common problems and consider regular maintenance and inspections to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicle.

Are BMW M2 reliable?

The reliability of the OG m2 is quite good. Some common issues that can happen is the valvetronic system tends to fail over time or very oddly when the car is brand new (maybe break in metals clogging the oil squirters, I have no clue).

Is a BMW M2 a good daily?

It's a great car and the different driving modes with comfort, M1 & M2 are incredible for different ways enjoying the car on the 40-50 mile daily commutes.

What is the ride quality of the BMW M2 2018?

I test drove a 2018 M2 and frankly found it to stiff for the poor roads I drive on. I ended up getting a G42, which has very comfortable ride, but I desperately miss the engagement of a manual transmission.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: WBS1J5C58JV
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving on a highway accelerating to merge to left lane when suddenly my charge pipe exploded and my vehicle lost almost all power. The sudden power loss put me in extreme danger as I tried to pull back over to the nearest exit with traffic zooming past me. After doing some research it became apparent that this is a long known issue. In fact bmw has redesigned the charge pipe with a new, more robust version but no recall has been issued to date and I'm stuck with over a thousand dollars of repairs as the pipe did additional damage to adjacent components. The BMW dealer is more than happy to write me up large repair bills and when I asked them why my car with 17.3K miles is experiencing such catastrophic failure am I being asked to pay for replacing an obvious manufacturing defect... Their answer is "I dunno I'm not in charge of such things - now give us money". What can you do about this? This is a widely known and widely reported issue. Why haven't nhtsa done anything about it?

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-15
  • VIN: WBS1J5C57JV
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS IN EVERY SNOWSTORM, THIS HAS BECOME A PROBLEM. THE HEADLIGHTS BECOME BUILT UP WITH SNOWPACK AND WILL NOT MELT DUE TO THE EFFICIENCY OF THE LED BULBS NOT PRODUCING ENOUGH HEAT. I'VE TRIED USING THE WASHER FLUID SPRAYERS EVERY FEW MINUTES TO STOP BUILD UP, BUT ALL IT DOES IS KEEP THE TURN SIGNAL AREA CLEAN, TESTED MULTIPLE DIFFERENT WASHER FLUIDS AS EXTREME AS I CAN FIND, EVEN MIXING MY OWN WASHER FLUID UP MADE OF 50% METHANOL AND 50% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL. THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, IT IS NOT USER ERROR, AND IT'S NOT A ONE-TIME THING, IT HAPPENS EVERY SNOW STORM INVOLVING DRIVING OVER 25 MPH. I'VE TRIED ADDRESSING IT WITH MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME TO REACH OUT TO BMW USA, WHICH I'VE TRIED WITH NO RETURN PHONE CALL. HOPEFULLY BRINGING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF OUR DEPARTMENT WILL HELP ME RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM, AS IT'S SIMPLY NOT SAFE.

2018 Bmw M2 recalls

Positive 2018 Bmw M2 car reviews

  1. Perry Stoltenberg 2025-01-06

Congratulations on your 6th BMW! It's great to hear that the M2 is your best one yet. The car's power and handling are phenomenal, and it's a relative bargain too. I'm glad to hear that the manual transmission is a joy to use in daily driving, with a light clutch pedal and plenty of torque. It's impressive that you can easily skip gears, and you don't need to hit every gear when you accelerate unless you're tracking the car. The M2 comes fully loaded with only a couple of available options, and it's worth comparing the loaded MSRP of the M2 to a comparably equipped M235i. You'll find that they are nearly identical in MSRP, but the M2 offers more power, better brakes, wider tires, and better performance. Additionally, the M2 comes with a standard limited slip differential, which is a $2,700 accessory on the M235i. In terms of fuel mileage, the M2 gets about 24 MPG in daily driving and 29 MPG on long highway trips. It's worth noting that the suspension is stiff and not adjustable like it is on the M235i. Overall, the M2 is one of BMW's best driver's cars. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Kendrick Sauer 2024-08-13

I absolutely love my 2017 M2! It handles like a dream on the track and on windy roads, especially with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The back seat is also surprisingly spacious and can comfortably seat two adults. It's the perfect combination of a sports car and a practical daily driver. I wouldn't change a thing about it - it's the best car I've ever owned!

  3. Keith Rogahn 2024-07-28

I'm 74 and have owned a lot of cars. I traded my Z4 for this little gem because of its superior road handling. I have no complaints except that I sometimes miss the convertible on a beautiful day. The Long Beach Blue color gets compliments from everyone everywhere. This is the best car I've ever owned.

  4. Benny Waters 2024-07-12

The rear seat is mostly unusable and the maintenance cost is prohibitive after the warranty.

  5. Albin Schulist 2024-02-23

The DCT allows for a good mpg. However, we can still enjoy strong accelerations when we want to. Some people say that the ride is stiff, but I would correct that by saying that the road quality is probably poor.
