Bmw M2 problems
The BMW M2 is a version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range.
The first-generation M2 used the F8x chassis from the M3/M4, codenamed F87 and featured the BMW N55 series engine, while its successors, the M2 Competition and M2 CS, featured a twin-turbocharged engine developed by BMW M GmbH (S55 engine).
First generation (F87; 2016)
BMW M2 Coupé
The M2 was unveiled in Need for Speed in November 2015, before later premiering at the North American International Auto Show in January 2016. Production commenced in October 2015, first delivered early 2016 and the M2 was only available as a rear-wheel drive coupé. The M2 is powered by the turbocharged 3.0-litre N55B30T0 straight-six engine rated at 272 kW (365 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 465 N⋅m (343 lb⋅ft) between 1,450 and 4,750 rpm, while an overboost function temporarily increases torque to 500 N⋅m (369 lb⋅ft). The M2 features reinforced pistons, and has lighter aluminium front and rear suspension components resulting in a 5 kg (11 lb) weight reduction. The M2 is available with a 6-speed manual or with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. 0–100 km/h acceleration times are 4.5 seconds manual transmission models and 4.3 seconds for models equipped with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) but could be extended to 270 km/h (168 mph) with the optional M Driver's package. The M2 was used as a safety car in the 2016 MotoGP season.

Common Bmw M2 problems
The BMW M2 has been praised for its impressive performance and stylish design, but like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain problems. Here are some of the common issues reported by owners of the BMW M2, based on the search results:
- Coolant system problems: Water pump failure is a common problem in the M2. This component is responsible for circulating coolant around the engine and radiator; if it breaks or malfunctions in any way, it is an urgent issue that needs repairing. Look out for coolant leaks, which are a symptom of a failing water pump.
- Indicator malfunction: M2s are known for sometimes developing indicator problems. Often, the rear right indicator malfunctions, resulting in an intermittent warning message. Other symptoms may include the turn signal blinking rapidly, turning light bulbs not working at the front or rear, and the turn signal indicator coming on and staying on. Several things, such as a bad turn signal switch, bulb, flasher relay, or wire, can cause faulty indicators.
- Horn problems: Several drivers have reported issues with the horn of their M2, which fails to make any noise when pressed. A bad relay, blown fuse, broken clockspring, faulty horn, or broken wire may cause this problem.
- DCT transmission problems: The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) unit is strong but not the most reliable, especially since it's considerably more complex than most standard transmissions. Common DCT issues include shaking/shuddering, transmission overheating, and hesitation/delayed shifting. Some driving habits are known to decrease the life of this kind of transmission, such as putting the vehicle in neutral while idling at traffic lights, which isn't necessary.
- Valvetronic system failures: Some common issues that can happen with the valvetronic system in the old m2 models is that it tends to fail over time or very oddly when the car is brand new. This can be due to break-in metals clogging the oil squirters or damage to the eccentric shaft bearings or the shaft itself. Over time, this can lead to the valvetronic system failing, requiring a new valvetronic motor and potentially a new eccentric shaft as well.
In general, the BMW M2 is considered to be a reliable vehicle, with BMW issuing just one recall since the car went on sale in 2016. However, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the vehicle's longevity and safety.
What is the common problem with the M2?
As discussed earlier, water pump failure is a common problem in the M2. This component is responsible for circulating coolant around the engine and radiator; if it breaks or malfunctions in any way, this is an urgent issue that needs repairing.
Is a BMW M2 a good daily?
I'm still unconvinced by several aspects of this one, which we'll get to over the next few months, but overall, it's a bloody good as a daily driver. That's the key point: what BMW did to the M2 to answer common customer complaints has resulted in one of the most rounded M cars… ever.
How many miles can a BMW M2 last?
How many miles do BMW models last? A BMW can last 150-200,000 miles with proper care and if you drive the national average of 13,500 miles per year, you can expect to drive your BMW for 10-15 years according to MotorAsk.
Why did BMW discontinue the M2?
In fact, sales of the outgoing M2 could've been even higher were it not for the fact it had to be pulled from the European market early because it couldn't meet the latest emissions standards, said Franciscus van Meel, chief executive officer of BMW M, the automaker's high-performance brand.

Bmw M2 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-01-03
- VIN: WBS1J5C58JV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving on a highway accelerating to merge to left lane when suddenly my charge pipe exploded and my vehicle lost almost all power. The sudden power loss put me in extreme danger as I tried to pull back over to the nearest exit with traffic zooming past me. After doing some research it became apparent that this is a long known issue. In fact bmw has redesigned the charge pipe with a new, more robust version but no recall has been issued to date and I'm stuck with over a thousand dollars of repairs as the pipe did additional damage to adjacent components. The BMW dealer is more than happy to write me up large repair bills and when I asked them why my car with 17.3K miles is experiencing such catastrophic failure am I being asked to pay for replacing an obvious manufacturing defect... Their answer is "I dunno I'm not in charge of such things - now give us money". What can you do about this? This is a widely known and widely reported issue. Why haven't nhtsa done anything about it?
Bmw M2 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-05
- Date Complaint: 2021-09-10
- VIN: WBS1H9C38HV
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The charge pipe, connecting the cold side of the intercooler to the throttle body failed without warning. The failure point was the clamping point to secure the pipe to the throttle body. This vehicle has no powertrain modifications. The failure happened all of a sudden and as a result, my vehicle lost all power. Luckily, there wasn't anyone behind my car when this happened, but this could have easily been a big safety issue had I been merging onto a freeway/taking a left turn. I have not gotten the issue inspected by the dealer. The failure was easily visible. Parts of the charge pipe and broken off and fallen on the undertray. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone apart from myself. There were no warning signs prior to the failure. Even after the failure, the check engine light took ~2 miles of driving to come on. On BMW forums, this seems to be a very common issue for many people running their car in stock condition.

- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-15
- Date Complaint: 2019-02-15
- VIN: WBS1J5C57JV
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS IN EVERY SNOWSTORM, THIS HAS BECOME A PROBLEM. THE HEADLIGHTS BECOME BUILT UP WITH SNOWPACK AND WILL NOT MELT DUE TO THE EFFICIENCY OF THE LED BULBS NOT PRODUCING ENOUGH HEAT. I'VE TRIED USING THE WASHER FLUID SPRAYERS EVERY FEW MINUTES TO STOP BUILD UP, BUT ALL IT DOES IS KEEP THE TURN SIGNAL AREA CLEAN, TESTED MULTIPLE DIFFERENT WASHER FLUIDS AS EXTREME AS I CAN FIND, EVEN MIXING MY OWN WASHER FLUID UP MADE OF 50% METHANOL AND 50% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL. THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, IT IS NOT USER ERROR, AND IT'S NOT A ONE-TIME THING, IT HAPPENS EVERY SNOW STORM INVOLVING DRIVING OVER 25 MPH. I'VE TRIED ADDRESSING IT WITH MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME TO REACH OUT TO BMW USA, WHICH I'VE TRIED WITH NO RETURN PHONE CALL. HOPEFULLY BRINGING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF OUR DEPARTMENT WILL HELP ME RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM, AS IT'S SIMPLY NOT SAFE.

- Date Of Incident: 2018-09-02
- Date Complaint: 2018-09-22
- VIN: WBS1H9C53H-
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES (SPEED AND RPM) ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO READ UNDER BOTH BRIGHT SUNNY CONDITIONS, AND DARK SHADOW CONDITIONS (IN A TUNNEL, OR IN SHADE). WEARING SUNGLASSES? FORGET SEEING THEM AT ALL. I FIND IT A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN I HAVE TO GLANCE DOWN AT THE GAUGES LONGER THAN NECESSARY AND TAKE MY EYES OFF THE ROAD, AND SQUINT TO DECIPHER WHAT SPEED I'M GOING. THE ONLY WAY TO HELP THIS (BUT NOT COMPLETELY) IS TO TURN ON THE PARKING LIGHTS WHICH TURNS ON THE BACKLIGHT. AT DUSK OR AT NIGHT IT READS FINE, BUT IN DAYLIGHT SUN OR SHADE IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. I FIND IT TO BE A SERIOUS DESIGN AND SAFETY FLAW AND DANGEROUS. PLEASE INVESTIGATE TO SEE IF THIS CAN BE REMEDIED BY THE MANUFACTURER EITHER BY A SOFTWARE UPDATE, OR CLUSTER MODIFICATION. THANK YOU

I've been driving for over 30 years and have had the pleasure of driving hundreds of different vehicles, including owning a few dozen myself, such as 2 AMGs, 4 Porsches, a Lotus, and 6 M cars. Out of all of them, the M2 C is definitely one of my all-time favorites. It's a fantastic all-rounder, comfortable for daily use, but still fun and special when you really push it. It's an amazing vehicle, especially when you consider the price. Personally, I opted for the 6-speed manual and have no regrets. Only a select few have had the chance to drive it, but it never fails to impress. Update: It's been 3 years and 7k miles since I've owned it. I've looked at and driven other alternatives, but all it takes is a 10-minute drive to remind me why I love my M2 Comp. While I do wish the interior had an upgrade option for a leather dash and door caps, it's a relatively trivial concern as the mechanics are spot on. I still love my M2 Comp and see no reason to sell it.

I've owned many sports cars over the past 45 years of driving, but this one is my absolute favorite. It has an incredible amount of power, providing you with all the acceleration you could ever want. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even drift the car with ease. The handling is excellent, although I have noticed some slight tire squirm at times. However, you always feel in control. The car is quite stiff, but it's still comfortable enough to drive on reasonably smooth roads. On smooth roads, it's an absolute dream. Despite being a small coupe, it's surprisingly spacious and has generous storage in the trunk (plus the rear seat folds down). In my opinion, the muscular design with bulging fender wells looks fantastic. I opted for the DCT and I don't regret it - it makes for a great commuter car. With M-drive settings, you can customize shift points, exhaust opening, and more. The exhaust can be quite loud if you open the valves, but it's easy to close them and keep the noise down. With the transmission set to shift at low revs and the exhaust valves closed, it becomes a semi-luxury car - smooth, relatively quiet, and unobtrusive. But if you raise the shift setting to the highest of the three and open the exhaust valves, it rips and wails. Unlike the first-gen M2, this one has the real M motor (S55), real M mirrors, real M leather on the seats, and more. It also has the carbon fiber strut tower brace, which looks fantastic. Although there are some negatives - it can be a little jerky in stop-and-go traffic (put it in the mildest settings for best operation), gas mileage isn't terrific (I average about 22 MPG even with significant steady-state highway driving), and there are some rattles here and there, likely due to the stiff suspension - overall, it's a wonderful performance car that offers exclusivity. It's not often that I see another one while driving.

I'm 74 and have owned a lot of cars. I traded my Z4 for this little gem because of its superior road handling. I have no complaints except that I sometimes miss the convertible on a beautiful day. The Long Beach Blue color gets compliments from everyone everywhere. This is the best car I've ever owned.

The BMW M2 Competition is an exceptional vehicle, with great design, styling, handling, and performance. As someone who is 6'2'', I find the interior design to be very spacious and comfortable. The material and fitment are of high standard, making it well worth the 58K I paid for it, which was a great deal at the time. If you have the means to pick one up, I highly recommend it. It's a great choice for anyone looking for a long-lasting car.
