2000 Audi S4 problems
The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.
Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.
A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.
All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

Common 2000 Audi S4 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2000 Audi S4, common problems include:
- Thermostat Malfunction: Overheating due to a failing thermostat has been a significant complaint among Audi S4 owners, affecting the car's ability to warm up properly, especially on cooler days.
- Airbag Light: Aftermarket modifications like changing seats can lead to issues like the airbag light constantly being on, which poses a safety concern. Addressing this problem is crucial to ensure the proper functioning of safety features in the car.
- General Maintenance: The Audi S4, particularly the B5 generation, requires meticulous maintenance to ensure its reliability. Regular oil changes, using high-quality synthetic oil, and investing in good tires are essential to keep the car in optimal condition. Neglecting maintenance can lead to costly repairs and impact the car's performance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-07-18
- VIN: WAUDD68D3YA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ON ALL THE AUDI S4S AND ALSO ON VW LOOSE PIXELS ON THE DASH AND IT GOES OUT, IT IS A HAZARD BECAUSE THIS IS A GAUGE THAT DOES A SYSTEM CHECK EVERY TIME YOU START THE VEHICLE, THE CAR TELLS THE DRIVER IF THERE ARE BRAKE PROBLEMS, ENGINE PROBLEMS, ALSO IF LIGHTS ARE OUT I.E. BRAKE LIGHTS TURN SIGNALS, AND ALSO FLUID STATUS OF THE CAR. WHEN THIS INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GOES OUT OR AS AUDI CALLS IT LOSES PIXELS, THE DRIVER DOES NOT KNOW THE STATUS OF THE CAR WHICH COULD CAUSE SAFETY AND HARM TO THE OPERATOR. IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED MANY TIMES AND HAS BEEN REPLACED ON MY CAR OVER 4 TIMES AND IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH OTHER AUDI OWNERS. ALSO THE WINDOW REGULATOR CLIP THAT HOLDS THE WINDOW BREAKS AS WELL, AUDI AND VW DID A RECALL VIN SPECIFIC MODELS OF THE BEETLE JETTA AND A4 BUT NOT THE S4, THE CLIP IS THE SAME DESIGN THAT IS USED IN MY VEHICLE. IT ALSO HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED MANY TIMES OF FAILING AND CAUSES ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE, IF THE CLIP BREAKS THE WINDOW WILL ROLL DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY, I.E. CAUSING THE WINDOW TO BREAK WHICH THROWS GLASS ALL OVER THE OCCUPANTS IN THE CAR AND ALSO EXPOSES LIMBS TO OBJECTS OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE. MANY COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN MADE ABOUT THIS DESIGN FLAW. I HAVE TRIED TO RESOLVE THESE ISSUES WITH AUDI MULTIPLE TIMES AND PHONE CALLS AND MULTIPLE EMAILS, REGARDLESS OF THE AGE AND MILES ON MY CAR, IT IS THE SAME THINGS THAT KEEP BREAKING, CAUSING THESE SAFETY ISSUES. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FROM DAY ONE WHEN THESE DESIGNS WERE PUT ON THE MARKET. AND REPLACING THESE ITEMS IS NECESSARY TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF MY OCCUPANTS AND MYSELF. THEY NEED TO BE REDESIGNED AND REVAMPED TO SOLVE THESE ISSUES. REPLACING THEM EVERY SINGLE YEAR IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. AND EVEN MORE SO WHEN SOMEONE'S LIFE IS AT RISK, DUE TO A BAD AND CARELESS DESIGN. *TR

2000 Audi S4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2000 Audi S4.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2000-2001 Audi TT Coupe, TT Roadster, 2000-2002 A4, and S4 vehicles equipped with Non-Azide Driver Air Bag Inflators (NADI) that do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, possibly causing the air bag to deploy improperly in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the air bag may not properly protect the occupant, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2, 2021. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69CJ.

I bought this rocket ship back in April 2000 and it has been the coolest and fastest car ever since! While it may not beat some of the top-of-the-line Ferraris, Porsches, or Maseratis, it is still the fastest and most luxurious sedan out there. When I drove it out of the dealership, I was amazed at how fast it was. The bi-turbo engine is simply wonderful and the interior is as luxurious as all Audis. This is actually my second Audi; my first was a 1996 A4.

I have loved my S4 since March 04'. Although I would have preferred a stick shift, I couldn't wait to have one. I have been just as happy with this car since day one and have had no problems. It's fast and the display panel is like a jet dashboard - it lights up red and all passengers comment on it. I am still discovering features I didn't know existed on the car. For winter driving, it's important to have winter tires. The performance is only optimal during other seasons, so it's best not to mix them with all-season tires - otherwise, you lose the experience.
-
I've had my 2000 Audi S4 for two years now, and it continues to bring me joy every time I drive it. It's been reliable (so far) and is great fun to drive in the midwest in winter with snow tires. I have held off on upgrading to the newer version because I am still content with driving this each day.
-
The S4 is definitely the most enjoyable 4 door ride I've ever experienced. While my friend's '03 M3 is fun to drive, the S4 offers a much smoother ride. Plus, any minor issues I've had were all covered by warranty, such as the wiper sprayer pump and plastic radiator reservoir tank crack.
-
In both summer and winter conditions, this car is amazing! With a twin turbo and plenty of horsepower, it really moves. In the winter, it handles amazingly well with the right snow tires (better than my wife's huge Land Cruiser). Please note that it is important to put winter snow tires on this car if you drive in the snow, as the summer tires that come with the car are dangerous in snow. Overall, I absolutely loved owning this car!

There are some concerns with the 2.7 liter engine that Audi used to sell with their cars. The engine design has some flaws that can cause issues, especially with the K03 turbo chargers that were used in the 2000-2002 S4s (B5 platform). These turbos do not have adequate cooling, which can cause them to fail prematurely. Even if you don't race or chip the car, the turbos will eventually fail and require the entire engine to be removed for replacement. This can be quite expensive, costing around $6000 in labor and parts. However, there is a solution to this problem - replacing the K03 with K04 turbos. Although this can be costly, it can help avoid future issues. It's important to note that this design flaw has contributed to the lower resale value of these cars. If you're considering purchasing one, it's important to weigh the pros and cons carefully.

In the 18 months that I have owned this vehicle, I have spent over $3000 on repairs and maintenance. Unfortunately, there have been several issues with the car, including problems with the fuel gauge unit, throttle body, fuel line, ABS control unit, CV boot, and turn signal. These repairs were quite costly, both in terms of parts and labor. I am hoping to sell the car soon, and while I have had a difficult experience with this Audi, I appreciate the time that I have spent with it.
Clair Schiller 2024-04-02
The car had a few issues, including an improperly assembled A/C system that caused water to pour into the passenger seat. The water pump, catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, and coil packs were all replaced. Recently, the ABS computer and cruise control switch needed to be replaced. Although I had some trouble with the warranty repair at Metro, I was able to get Audi customer service to cover half the cost of the mandated repairs for the O2 sensors and converters. Overall, it was a bit of a hassle, but I'm glad it's all taken care of now.
