Alfa romeo Giulia problems
Alfa Romeo Giulia (Italian pronunciation: ) is the name of three not directly related models by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo. The first is a line of sporty four-door compact executive cars (Type 105) produced from 1962 to 1978, the second is an updated, mainly up-engined Spider, Sprint and Sprint Speciale Giuliettas, and the third Giulia is a compact executive car (type 952) unveiled in 2015.
Alfa Romeo was one of the first mainstream manufacturers to put a powerful engine in a light-weight 1 tonne (2,205 lb) four-door car for mass production. The Type 105 Giulia was equipped with a light alloy twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine similar to that of the earlier Giulietta (750/101) range, available in 1.3-litre (1,290 cc) and 1.6-litre (1,570 cc) versions. Various configurations of carburetors and tuning produced power outputs from about 80 to about 110 bhp (55 to 75 kW), coupled in most cases to 5-speed manual transmission.
Giulia sedans were noted for lively handling and impressive acceleration among small European four-door sedans of their era, especially considering modest engine sizes offered. The popular Super version with the twin carburettor 1.6 litre engine had a top speed of 170 km/h (106 mph) and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 12 seconds, better than many sports cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s. When leaving the factory all variations of the Giulia originally fitted either Pirelli Cinturato 165HR14 or 155HR15 tyres (CA67).
The styling of the boxy four-door notchback saloon was somewhat wanting. The engine bay, cabin and boot were all square shaped, buffered somewhat by details on the grill, roofline, bonnet and boot. Use of a wind tunnel during development led to a very aerodynamic shape that produced a drag coefficient of Cd=0.34, particularly low for a saloon of the era.
The Giulia Spider was succeeded by the Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115) in 1966.

Common Alfa romeo Giulia problems
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a stylish and luxurious executive saloon that offers a great driving experience, but it has been plagued with reliability issues, as reported by its owners. Here are some of the most common problems with the Alfa Romeo Giulia:
- Electrical Problems: The Alfa Romeo Giulia's electrical system has been reported to have a series of common faults, including the car shutting off without warning and not restarting, warning lights coming on at once, battery draining, failures of the stop-start system, and issues with corroded or leaking batteries.
- Engine Misfires: Alfa Romeo Giulia models from 2017 and 2018 were recalled due to an engine misfiring problem, which affected the 2.0-liter turbocharged models. This issue could lead to bigger failures if left unchecked, causing the catalytic converter to overheat and damage engine wiring, leading to electrical faults and potential engine fires.
- Anti-Lock Brake Failure: In 2020 and 2021 Giulia models, hard braking could separate the ABS system's hydraulic control unit, causing reduced braking power and a loss of anti-lock braking altogether.
- Failing Rear Brake Discs: The rear brake discs in certain 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia models were prone to breaking apart, causing a sudden and complete loss of braking power.
- Fuel Leaks and Fire Risk: 2020 and 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia models were affected by a crack in the fuel line sensor housing, which allowed fuel to leak from the fuel lines, increasing the risk of fire.
- Contaminated and Leaking Brake Fluid: 2017 and 2018 Giulia models frequently reported contaminated and leaking brake fluid.
- Faulty Brake Module Software: Giulias from 2017 to 2019 had issues with the brake module software, making it impossible to disable the adaptive cruise control system.
- Fuel Gauge Issues: A common issue with the fuel gauge in Giulia models between 2018 and 2019 resulted in higher readings, causing several stranded owners.
These problems have earned the Alfa Romeo Giulia a reputation for being unreliable. In the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, the Giulia came 23rd out of 24 cars in the executive car class, with a concerning reliability score of just 77.3%.

- VIN: ZARFAEEN7J7
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My fuel pump has been failing multiple times over the last 4 months. It has left me stranded in the middle of intersections, freeways, and highways on multiple occasions that has cause back up traffic and areas of the road completely closed until I can move my car. I have had this car diagnosed twice with a certified mechanic shop and a master tech with these issues and it is confirmed both times that I need a new fuel pump. When contacted Alfa Romeo/ Mike Ward dealership for review, diagnostic scans, and part replacement they told me it could be a couple of weeks until my car can even be looked at. Both my shop and the dealership have told me that this part is on back order with no ETA and no possible way of getting that part so my car can be functional. These issues first appeared when I would accelerate from a complete stop and it would take a few seconds for my car to begin moving. This slowly progressed into my check engine light, auto start/ stop error light, electric throttle error light, and front crash detection light have all turned on and remained on for about 2 months until the car began dying in the middle of the street. This had come to be so servers that the car is now no longer drivable and each time it is driven it dies within a few minutes of driving.Again since there is no ETA there is no way for me to fix my car, this is my only mode of transportation and it has left me ain multiple dangerous situations and now with no transportation now that Alfa Romeo is refusing to make the parts needed for repair.

- Summary: Alfa Romeo issued a recall for the tire information sticker as it inaccurately reflected the correct tire pressure for the rear tires. The tire pressure listed on the original sticker listed the correct tire pressure lower than required. The low tire pressure resulted in the rear tires failing prematurely and several thousand miles before the front tires. Even though the tires were low, the TPMS did not indicate that the tire pressure was lower than required.

- Summary: On September 1st 2024 we were faced with a serious problem with our Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T leaving us stranded. The culprate was a defect in the fuel pump on which led to the complete stop of the car during our trip abroad. After driving 900 kilometers without problems, various error messages suddenly appeared on the dashboard, including “Have engine checked”, “Start/stop function not available” and “Service throttle control”. A few seconds later, the engine stopped responding to the accelerator pedal and misfires appeared, which caused the engine to come to a complete stop and the power steering noticeably deced. Fortunately, we were just able to get to safety, but the car could not be started from that moment on. This incident occurred while we were far from home and caused significant inconvenience and stress. The diagnosis of our authorized Alfa Romeo dealer was: defective fuel pump and fuel pump module, with replacement costs of €1,294. What is striking is that at the same time another Giulia, with the same year of construction, was at the same dealer with exactly the same problem. In our case, because we were driving on a fairly empty road, we did not incur any injuries or damage to our vehicle or fellow road users, but of course this could have been very different in a busy traffic situation. We think this is a serious safety issue.

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After a 3 hour drive I had parked curb-side on a busy street to go into a store. I returned within 10 minutes, started the car, and as I was pulling out into traffic the car stalled after moving about 20 feet. All the dash lights came on and it would crank but not start. The car is in the right lane of a busy 3 lane road at this time. Also, after it stopped rolling it put itself in PARK, and because it has electronic transmission selection, I could not get it into Neutral to push it out of the way without the engine running. . The situation was very perilous. A wrecker came and got the car home. Once home I pulled the OBD codes myself and found P0087 Low Fuel Pressure and P008A also Low Fuel Pressure. After researching I have found that this is a known defect in these cars going on several years now. What is the delay in requiring Alfa to issue a recall of these faulty fuel pumps and fuel modules? Had this pump failure happened on an interstate at highway speeds it could have been fatal.

This car is a true gem! Like most Italian cars, it gets more enjoyable over time. Long-term ownership reviews agree that it eventually feels like it's a part of you. The Alfa mystique is still there, making it a fairly exclusive car due to its poor sales. However, this also means that they are a steal right now! I was lucky enough to pick up my Lusso for only 32K with less than 22K miles on it, even though it was over 60K when new. The drive is absolutely fabulous, and I'm glad I opted for RWD instead of AWD. I had a loaner with AWD and didn't find the experience of having less autonomy an advantage. The 2-liter engine has a big turbo, and it feels sublime on twisty roads in D mode, as this mode keeps you in boost. I was finding the usual Audis and BMWs lacking in excitement, but this car offers that in many unexpected ways. Don't believe the rumors about unreliability! Many Audi and BMW models have worse ratings, but it's popular for the general public to assume that Alfas are unreliable. If you research actual ownership, you will see that this is relatively untrue. The only issues I have had are warnings coming up saying that something is currently unavailable, even though they are working fine. Audio, for example. But the HK system and everything else works great, and the stereo sound is amazing! I typically drive 80-85 mph, and the car still delivers 32 mpg, which is pretty good. I've even achieved 37 mpg once, in heavy, steady 55 mph traffic. My Russo Lusso is a car that I'm looking forward to owning for a long time!

Vehicle year: 2019
As a self-proclaimed sports sedan junkie, I've owned quite a few cars in this segment over the past 15 years, including the BMW 3 series and M3, Audi A4 and S4, and C class. However, my Giulia Ti has proven to be the most reliable and best performing car I've ever owned. The only issue I encountered was a slightly slow infotainment system upon purchase, but the dealer promptly updated the firmware and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Unlike my previous cars, which all had mechanical or electrical issues within the first two years, my Giulia Ti has been a dream. Although I initially leased it as a precaution, I'm now seriously considering purchasing the Quadrifoglio when my lease expires. Alfa Romeo has truly won me over.

I was once told that if an Alfa dealership gets you to test drive, the sale is done... and they were right! I was initially hesitant due to the historic questions of reliability, but after three years of ownership, I can confidently say that this is easily the most exciting and rewarding daily driver I've owned, even compared to Audi, BMW, and Chevy. The handling is second to none, and the styling is... well... Italian!

Vehicle year: 2019
I purchased my 2018 Lusso used with about 8000 miles on it, 17,500 in total. It is by far the best car I have ever owned, surpassing even my previous Mercedes, Jaguar, and the rare Sterling 827 SLI manual. The car's looks, handling, power, transmission, and interior are unparalleled. The interior design, which integrates the screen into the flowing dashboard, is the best I have seen. However, the car is not without its issues, mainly requiring periodic software updates. I do wish that all car manufacturers would follow Tesla's lead and provide over-the-air software updates. Additionally, I am not a fan of the run-flat tires and lack of a spare, which seems to be a modern trend. As soon as they wear out, I plan to replace them with regular tires and a flat kit. Having driven several Alfa models, I can confidently say that the TI Lusso model with the optional dynamic packages is the sweet spot. It boasts a wonderful interior with the right color combination, better leather for the seats, leather dash and top of door panels, and 18” tires. The 19” tires on the sport model are prone to flats and provide a harsh ride. The trunk is also quite narrow and not very accommodating. However, I am fortunate to have a fantastic dealership in White Plains, New York. Despite its minor flaws, the power, responsiveness, handling, and stunning exterior and interior make for an incredibly enjoyable ride.

I love everything about it! However, I do agree that the back seat is quite small for its class.

Models with a sunroof have excessive wind noise. Alfa Romeo says that's the design. However, I personally don't think it's acceptable for a car of this price. Additionally, acceleration can be sluggish at low speeds and Bluetooth isn't compatible with iPhone. All in all, I would hold off on purchasing until these issues are sorted out.

Consider leasing instead of buying. Despite its attractive appearance and performance, this particular car model has had several issues, including multiple battery replacements, a new ECM, wiring harness, and water leaks. While newer models have addressed some of these concerns, it's important to thoroughly research before making a decision. Our team recommends exploring all options before committing to a purchase.

I purchased a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia in May 2017. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the vehicle, including dashboard warnings and the car unexpectedly moving to Neutral while in Drive. This has happened multiple times, including once on the highway at 70+MPH and multiple times while making left or right turns. While this has been a frustrating experience, I must say that the dealership has been very helpful and courteous throughout the process. They have kept us informed and have done their best to resolve the issue. However, we have been disappointed with the response from Alfa Romeo Corporate. They have moved our case to a Third Party Dispute Resolution Center, who offered us a very small amount of compensation for the inconvenience and risk to our safety. We believe that a premium brand like Alfa Romeo should take these issues more seriously and offer a more appropriate solution, such as replacing the vehicle with a new, tested one. Unfortunately, this has not been the case, and we are left feeling regretful about our purchase. Despite this, we remain positive and hopeful for a resolution to this situation.

Coming from a person who owned 7 M-B in 15 years maybe I’m expecting too much from an auto manufacturer who services there vehicles at Dodge/Chrysler/Ram dealers, with that said I test drove the Giulia and love the handling and the way it drove and I still like the way it drives when I have the car since I owned it for 10 month and it has spend around a month broken for different things, now the car has a loud noise in the front suspension over some big bumps and while making hard left turns and 2 different dealerships can’t fix it, and to get a loaner it has to be first pre approved by FCA then Im stuck driving either Ford Escape or Dodge Caravan, I have a 50k+ Sport Sedan and get a Caravan every time it breaks and every time I get the car back still broken and first time with a dirty interior and my headliner with grease stains, then they scratched the front bumper and to make it worst they don’t fix it, so I HATE THIS ******* car. FCA you suck.
