2017 Acura Tlx problems

acura logo

The Acura TLX is a four-door entry-level luxury sedan sold by Acura, a luxury division of Honda, since 2014. It is the successor to both the TL and TSX models. As of 2021, the discontinuation of the RLX leaves the TLX as the flagship sedan in Acura's lineup.

Design history

The Acura TLX was first shown as the "TLX Prototype", a sedan designed in Acura's Los Angeles Design Studio, as a replacement of the TL and TSX sedans. The production version was unveiled in April at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. Sales began in August, the TLX entered production during July at Marysville, Ohio, United States.

First generation (UB1/UB2/UB3/UB4; 2015)

Two powertrain options are available. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder DOHC i-VTEC engine with direct injection was offered with front-wheel drive only, mated to a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel steering (P-AWS). This model's chassis code is UB1. The Honda designed dual clutch transmission is the first to use a torque converter, which absorbs transmission gear shift shock, thus reducing NVH. The engine is rated at 206 hp (154 kW; 209 PS) with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg‑US (9.8 L/100 km; 29 mpg‑imp)/35 mpg‑US (6.7 L/100 km; 42 mpg‑imp)/28 mpg‑US (8.4 L/100 km; 34 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) compared to 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp)/31 mpg‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg‑imp)/26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) from the previous TSX. Honda estimates that the six-cylinder model is 1.5 seconds faster from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h).

A 3.5-liter direct injected SOHC VTEC V-6 with cylinder deactivation (VCM) is mated to Honda's first time use of a 9-speed automatic transmission (sourced from ZF), available with either P-AWS or all-wheel drive (SH-AWD). The SH-AWD system uses hydraulic clutches instead of the electromagnetic clutch packs found on the previous TL which significantly cuts weight, size and cost. The engine is rated at 290 hp (216 kW; 294 PS) and front-wheel drive models deliver 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp)/34 mpg‑US (6.9 L/100 km; 41 mpg‑imp)/25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) while all-wheel drive models are rated at 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp)/31 mpg‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg‑imp)/25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg‑imp). Model codes are UB2 for the front-wheel drive and UB3 for the SH-AWD, which comes standard with a "Technology Package". TLX models configured with the V6 engine lose nearly 150 lb (68 kg) compared to the FWD TL, and over 225 lb (102 kg) compared to the SH-AWD TL.

Overall length compared to the previous TL was reduced by 3.8 inches (97 mm) while the wheelbase maintains the same length. As with the ninth-generation Accord, the TLX loses the front double wishbone suspension of the TSX and TL in favor of a MacPherson strut arrangement, and loses the TL's all-aluminum front subframe in favor of a lower cost friction stir welded aluminum and steel piece.

To significantly cut down on interior noise, triple door seals are used as well as additional sound insulation.

Common 2017 Acura Tlx problems

The 2017 Acura TLX has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, which include engine jerking, brake slippage, vibration in the gas pedal, and a strange noise upon starting after sitting overnight.

Engine Jerking: One owner reported that the engine jerks while cruising, and it takes a couple of seconds to get some power for quick lane changes. This issue could be due to a problem with the transmission or the engine's fuel system.

Brake Slippage: Another issue reported is brake slippage while coming to a stop. This could be a sign of worn-out brake pads or a problem with the brake system's hydraulics.

Vibration in the Gas Pedal: Some owners have reported a vibration in the gas pedal while driving at highway speeds. This could be due to a problem with the drivetrain or the suspension system.

Strange Noise upon Starting: A strange noise, similar to a tiny lawnmower trying to start but failing, has been reported by some owners when starting the car after it has been sitting overnight. This could be due to a problem with the starter motor or the fuel system.

Another issue that has been reported with the 2017 Acura TLX is reduced fuel pump performance, which can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. This issue has led to a recall of certain 2017 TLX models.

While these issues can be concerning, it's important to note that the 2017 Acura TLX is considered to be a reliable vehicle overall. Consumer Reports predicts that the 2024 TLX will be more reliable than the average new car, and the 2017 model is considered to be one of the best years for the TLX, with few reported problems compared to other model years.

If you're considering purchasing a 2017 Acura TLX, it's important to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making the purchase. This will help ensure that any potential issues are identified and addressed before they become major problems. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from occurring in the first place.

What is the common problem with Acura TLX?

Transmission super bad on downshifts, when going uphill low throttle you can feel grinding like the engine is going to stall out.

What are the negatives of the Acura TLX?

While the TLX's ride is comfortable and handling is nimble, there's too much road and engine noise, undermining the premium pretense. The front seats are supportive, but the rear seat is tight, and the car's low stance hurts cabin access. The touchpad-based infotainment system is very distracting to use.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 19UUB3F78HA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On September 30, 2024 I received a notice from Acura titled “Important Safety Notice” (Recall Number 23V-751). The recall concerns a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft. On October 1, 2024 I contacted Nalley Acura of Marietta, Georgia about scheduling an appointment and was told that the first available appointment was not until July 24, 2025 (almost ten months later). I was also told that the recall is not a safety concern and that I can continue to drive my car. I find it incredulous that Acura can issue a “safety recall” and then claim that the first opportunity to perform the repair is ten months later. Being forced to wait ten months to repair a manufacturing defect is outrageous and dangerous. Is this a subterfuge by the Company to avoid performing the repairs? In addition, I am confused by the dealerships response that this is not a safety concern. The recall notice states “due to a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft, the connecting rod bearing can prematurely wear and seize, causing engine damage. A damaged engine may run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury”. Is the recall notice incorrect - that the matter under recall is not a safety concern? Additionally, I received a call from Honda Customer Service on Friday, October 4, 2024. Among other things, I was told that as part of the recall, I may be charged for a "diagnostic test" if the dealership looks at my car and finds a repair is not needed. Waiting ten months for a safety recall is unacceptable and I hope the NHTSA investigates this further and forces Acura to explain how it can take so long to perform the service caused by its manufacturing defect. Also, to incur a charge as part of the recall process is unacceptable and will only discourage consumers from taking their car to a dealer.

WHEELS,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-11
  • VIN: 19UUB1F54HA
  • Components: WHEELS,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On May 11, 2024, while driving my 2017 Acura TLX on a local city street, multiple dashboard lights suddenly came on. Since that time these lights began to come back on more frequent and often will go into a Limp Mode. I have had the vehicle inspected at my local Acura dealership only to be told that the vehicles rear PAWS Actuators and Control Unit need to be replaced at a cost of around $8,000. They also informed me that a recall for this issue was only for the 2015 TLX and RLX models but there could be a recall for my model year at some future date. I find this to be unacceptable as I have found out there are multiple instances of this same issue happening with many other Acura owners.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: 19UUB2F55HA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Car experiences intermittent electrical system failure. Upon failure, drivers will experiance random and rapid clicking, clanking, and electrical systems discharging like lights, screens, and alarm. After restarting the car, users will find, all warning lights displayed with a few blinking: transmission, parking brake, traction control, a few more. Headlights will randomly turn on, as well as the alarm, intermittently. All ADAS offline. Experienced sudden system failure causing all ADAS to fail while stationary/parked or moving/(actively driving on highway). Does actively affect driving ability more specifically: disrupts steering ability, causes random malfunctions with electrical components, cannot exceed 40 mph, car will not shift above 3rd gear, engine does seem much louder. After a thorough investigation/diagnosis with the dealership I concluded the main fault is due to the "Smart Power Control Unit" located behind the glovebox compartment of the vehicle. More specifically, one of the chips on the circuit board is not fully coated with sealant from the factory, leading to a potential for some kind of mold, dust, or organic growth to form and short one of the ground pins on the end of the chip. Driver States: This is a control unit failure, I believe a small short on a single ground pin with the positively charged chip housing was causing a short within the control unit circuit board where the chip was not fully covered with non-conductive coating/sealant. This caused a handful of issues, like electrical systems prematurely wearing due to rapid discharge of electronics. Impairs drivers ability and ability in turning, braking, and accelerating. Also car will roll backwards if driver is not careful. BIGGEST CONCERNS: FIRE, partial loss of control while driving, and premature wear on electrical components. A extra note: Disconnecting battery does temporarily fix issue but rarely, most time it will start discharging electrical systems immediately or in the day.

After receiving the repair, while driving approximately 15 MPH, the contact became aware that the vehicle was vibrating abnormally. The contact stated that the vibration became more prominent at speeds of 70 MPH or higher. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated and lost motive power briefly before regaining normal operation. The vehicle was returned to the dealer who performed the recall repair to confirm that the engine had been inspected. I contacted Acura dealer and they said it is a software issue and Acura is aware of it and no fix is available at this time. Then it happened again 3 days ago while I was turning into a parking lot and this time I took it to dealer service department. They checked but could do nothing about it other than clean gear selector push buttons which does not solve the issue. My car has had all recommended maintenance including transmission fluid change done about 5000 miles ago. This is an extremely serious issue and could have resulted in major accident on highway resulting in injuries or death.

Negative 2017 Acura Tlx car reviews

  1. Jonathan Runolfsdottir 2024-10-28

I have experienced some issues with my TLX technology, including navigation that has caused me to become lost on a few occasions. Additionally, the volume on the stereo has automatically increased to its highest level, which has been concerning. Despite taking the car to Acura to address these issues, they were unable to find a solution. I have also noticed that the paint on the car does not hold up well when driving on roads with other cars. However, I remain confident in the overall quality and performance of the TLX.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Acura car. While I initially thought it was a good brand, unfortunately, I made a decision that I now regret. I feel that Acura may be rushing these cars out without proper testing, which is concerning. I have some reservations about taking this car on the highway as it doesn't seem to move as well as I would like. Overall, it has been an expensive purchase that I am looking forward to unloading soon.

  3. Floy Nienow 2024-08-12

I purchased my Acura in 2020 and drove it for three years with minimal issues. However, during a recent oil change, two separate leaks were discovered, which will cost me over $1500. Despite my disappointment with these early issues, I was considering purchasing an RDX as my next car. However, I am now hesitant to buy another Acura.

  4. Thaddeus Stracke 2024-07-18

It's important to note that Acura does not allow leases to be assumed, unlike many other auto companies in its class. Additionally, if you approach a dealer about a potential buyback, they may inform you that the car is worth less than the amount of payments due. This can be frustrating, but it's important to keep in mind when considering leasing an Acura.

Positive 2017 Acura Tlx car reviews

The 2017 TLX V6 is a fantastic car! Having driven other cars in the same class, I can confidently say that no other car comes close to its performance. It outperforms the 3 series and C300. The TLX drives smoothly on the freeway, which is especially impressive for anyone from Southern California who knows how bumpy the drive can be on the 710. I personally got the TLX V6 with the Tech package and I highly recommend it. If you're looking for a great deal and you're near West Covina, I suggest you go see Jessica Rosas at Thomas Acura. She's fantastic!

  2. Donny Mante 2024-07-24

You get tons of value for the money! It's luxurious and drives well. As for the vibration some people talk about, I have noticed only a smooth ride.

  3. Raven Wolff 2024-07-22

I can't believe how quickly they improved!

  4. Deonte Wisoky 2024-07-15

I purchased the TLX in 2018 and it was in excellent condition despite being a year old. I have been driving it for almost 6 years now and have put 72000 miles on it with absolutely no problems. Other than routine maintenance, I have only had to purchase a set of tires. The TLX is impressively quiet on the road and has an exceptional music system. On the highway, I can get an average of 36 mpg which is outstanding! The finish, both inside and outside, is still in excellent condition. I even tested the safety at high speeds and was impressed with the ride and handling. Acura definitely knows how to build one of the best vehicles on the highway. I would definitely consider buying another one someday.

  5. Nestor Fisher 2024-06-14

Hey there! I wanted to let you know that Acura has made a cost-saving and efficiency effort by eliminating the spare tire. However, I do agree that it would have been great if they had made run-flat tires standard. I wouldn't even suggest using fix-a-flat as it can actually damage your tires. Thanks for reading!
