Acura Tlx problems

The Acura TLX is a four-door entry-level luxury sedan sold by Acura, a luxury division of Honda, since 2014. It is the successor to both the TL and TSX models. As of 2021, the discontinuation of the RLX leaves the TLX as the flagship sedan in Acura's lineup.

Design history

The Acura TLX was first shown as the "TLX Prototype", a sedan designed in Acura's Los Angeles Design Studio, as a replacement of the TL and TSX sedans. The production version was unveiled in April at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. Sales began in August, the TLX entered production during July at Marysville, Ohio, United States.

First generation (UB1/UB2/UB3/UB4; 2015)

Two powertrain options are available. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder DOHC i-VTEC engine with direct injection was offered with front-wheel drive only, mated to a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel steering (P-AWS). This model's chassis code is UB1. The Honda designed dual clutch transmission is the first to use a torque converter, which absorbs transmission gear shift shock, thus reducing NVH. The engine is rated at 206 hp (154 kW; 209 PS) with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg‑US (9.8 L/100 km; 29 mpg‑imp)/35 mpg‑US (6.7 L/100 km; 42 mpg‑imp)/28 mpg‑US (8.4 L/100 km; 34 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) compared to 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp)/31 mpg‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg‑imp)/26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) from the previous TSX. Honda estimates that the six-cylinder model is 1.5 seconds faster from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h).

A 3.5-liter direct injected SOHC VTEC V-6 with cylinder deactivation (VCM) is mated to Honda's first time use of a 9-speed automatic transmission (sourced from ZF), available with either P-AWS or all-wheel drive (SH-AWD). The SH-AWD system uses hydraulic clutches instead of the electromagnetic clutch packs found on the previous TL which significantly cuts weight, size and cost. The engine is rated at 290 hp (216 kW; 294 PS) and front-wheel drive models deliver 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp)/34 mpg‑US (6.9 L/100 km; 41 mpg‑imp)/25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) while all-wheel drive models are rated at 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp)/31 mpg‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg‑imp)/25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg‑imp). Model codes are UB2 for the front-wheel drive and UB3 for the SH-AWD, which comes standard with a "Technology Package". TLX models configured with the V6 engine lose nearly 150 lb (68 kg) compared to the FWD TL, and over 225 lb (102 kg) compared to the SH-AWD TL.

Overall length compared to the previous TL was reduced by 3.8 inches (97 mm) while the wheelbase maintains the same length. As with the ninth-generation Accord, the TLX loses the front double wishbone suspension of the TSX and TL in favor of a MacPherson strut arrangement, and loses the TL's all-aluminum front subframe in favor of a lower cost friction stir welded aluminum and steel piece.

To significantly cut down on interior noise, triple door seals are used as well as additional sound insulation.

Is the Acura TLX reliable?

You'd only need to spend about $440 annually to maintain an Acura TLX, which earns a 4.5 out of five-star reliability rating from RepairPal. Luxury midsize cars in the segment cost $739 annually on average to repair, but the TLX only visits the shop about 0.2 times per year, with a 12% chance of severe repairs.

What are the negatives of the Acura TLX?

While the TLX's ride is comfortable and handling is nimble, there's too much road and engine noise, undermining the premium pretense. The front seats are supportive, but the rear seat is tight, and the car's low stance hurts cabin access. The touchpad-based infotainment system is very distracting to use.

How many miles will an Acura TLX last?

250,000 to 300,000 miles

EnginePatro.com – “The Acura TLX is a reliable, durable vehicle that can last 250,000 to 300,000 miles on average.”

What is the best year for the used Acura TLX?

The Acura TLX is excellent if you're looking for a high-quality used option. Go with the 2017, 2019, 202, 0r 2021 versions for the most value with your investment.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 19UUB3F78HA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On September 30, 2024 I received a notice from Acura titled “Important Safety Notice” (Recall Number 23V-751). The recall concerns a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft. On October 1, 2024 I contacted Nalley Acura of Marietta, Georgia about scheduling an appointment and was told that the first available appointment was not until July 24, 2025 (almost ten months later). I was also told that the recall is not a safety concern and that I can continue to drive my car. I find it incredulous that Acura can issue a “safety recall” and then claim that the first opportunity to perform the repair is ten months later. Being forced to wait ten months to repair a manufacturing defect is outrageous and dangerous. Is this a subterfuge by the Company to avoid performing the repairs? In addition, I am confused by the dealerships response that this is not a safety concern. The recall notice states “due to a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft, the connecting rod bearing can prematurely wear and seize, causing engine damage. A damaged engine may run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury”. Is the recall notice incorrect - that the matter under recall is not a safety concern? Additionally, I received a call from Honda Customer Service on Friday, October 4, 2024. Among other things, I was told that as part of the recall, I may be charged for a "diagnostic test" if the dealership looks at my car and finds a repair is not needed. Waiting ten months for a safety recall is unacceptable and I hope the NHTSA investigates this further and forces Acura to explain how it can take so long to perform the service caused by its manufacturing defect. Also, to incur a charge as part of the recall process is unacceptable and will only discourage consumers from taking their car to a dealer.

Acura Tlx 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-30
  • VIN: 19UUB2F5XGA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The following complaint is in relation to NHTSA Safety Recall 23V-751 and the Acura Corporation's unwillingness to recompense the registered owner for catastrophic damages that occurred to the engine. The vehicle in question is a 2016 Acura TLX, and the recall applied to the Acura MDX, Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey and Honda Ridgeline. The manufacturing defect, which potentially involved 248,999 vehicles, was the connecting rod bearing of the crankshaft prematurely wearing and seizing. This is precisely what occurred to this TLX. The chronological events of this incident are quite revealing. On Jan 2023, midwinter, while driving on [XXX] near the Canadian border, the engine completely lost power, leaving the registered owner, XXX stranded on the interstate alone for 30 minutes. There were no warning lights, only a knocking sound originating from the engine. The vehicle was eventually towed to a nearby auto shop. The vehicle was not towed to an Acura or Honda dealership due to the extended distance, as XXX was employed at the US Port of Entry on the US/Canadian border, a remote location. The mechanics at the auto shop determined the entire engine needed to be replaced and repairs were completed on [XXX] and XXX paid $6,360.30 out of pocket. An effort to be compensated by Acura was denied. As of Nov 2023, Honda has 1450 claims. According 23V-751, Honda received its 1st complaint regarding this matter on Feb 2020 and investigated through Sept of 2023. Only until [XXX] did Honda decide to conduct a safety recall, well after the catastrophic failure of the aforementioned TLX which occurred on Jan 2023. And it was only until Jan 2024 that notification (24-002)of this defect was initiated. Again, Acura refuses to accept any responsibility or accountability for this incident, nor did it care to investigate the matter in its entirety, simply stating if the vehicle was not inspected by an Acura dealership (typical response), they are absolved of any wrongdoing. I pulled over immediately and the steering wheel locked completely. I turned the car off and back after about 10 min and I was able to drive home. Luckily I was only 5 minutes away. I took it to the Acura dealer and after it was inspected they said it had to do with the steering however nothing was replaced or fixed. They advised me to let them know if it happens again. This is the first time it occurs however I’m afraid to drive this car especially on the freeway if the same incident occurs it can cause a major accident.

I purchased a brand new 2017 Acura TLX Tech. In 2019, it left me stranded and walking to my job. Despite Acura initially claiming that the battery was fine, I persisted and they eventually replaced it. However, I am disappointed to report that the battery has now died again, exactly two years later in 2021. Despite the number of complaints listed on the Internet, Acura has yet to address this issue. As a loyal customer, I expect better reliability from my first new car.

I recently upgraded from a 2010 Acura TL to a 2017 Acura TLX, but unfortunately, I've been experiencing some technical and quality control issues with the car. For instance, the dashboard technology is not up to par with other car manufacturers, and it can be quite distracting to use while driving. Additionally, the car's acceleration can be sputtery at times, even when using Top Tier gas from specific gas stations. Despite these issues, I plan on keeping the car and hope that the manufacturer will address these concerns in the future. Overall, I'm a bit discouraged by the quality of the car, but I'm still happy with my purchase and look forward to driving it for years to come.

Acura has persistently experienced vibration issues with the TLX SH AWD for 4 years, yet they have not taken any action to address the matter. When Edmunds requested an update 3 years later, no changes had been made. It is not recommended to purchase an Acura or Honda due to their lack of customer care. It is concerning that they continue to knowingly sell defective cars.

I got a great deal on the TLX at the end of 2015 and decided to buy it due to the thousands I saved off the sticker price. Although I initially didn't think the car was worth the $1,000 off sticker price after test driving it earlier in the year, I was pleasantly surprised by its smooth and quiet ride. The 4-cylinder engine has more than enough power with the 8-speed DCT, and the rear cross and blind spot protection make it a great highway cruiser that gets around 35 miles per gallon on premium gas. However, I do not recommend running the car on 87 octane gas as it can cause engine knocking. The sound system is great, and the gas mileage is impressive for a car this size. On the downside, I noticed a crease in the headliner 2,000 miles into owning the car, which turned out to be a broken headliner that should have been caught during quality assurance. The dealer had to pull out the windshield to replace it, which was frustrating. Although the fit and finish inside is just okay, I would expect better for a luxury brand like Honda. The touch screen for the HVAC controls is not very user-friendly, and I miss having knobs. My most recent issue is that the car sometimes has trouble shifting out of drive and into reverse, and I have to play with the transmission to get it to work. The dealer initially told me this had never happened before, but on the second day, they said it was a damaged shift cable. They couldn't explain what caused the damage, but they fixed it. I also asked them to fix a rattle/vibration in the headliner, but unfortunately, there are still some issues with the panels fitting properly after being taken apart twice. After the first time, my loaner no longer looked neat and tight. I had some initial problems with my Acura, and unfortunately, the customer service was not up to par. However, I must say that my experience with Jeep's customer service was much better. Although I wanted to like the Acura, the ownership experience did not meet my expectations. Before spending your hard-earned money, I recommend checking out what Consumer Reports has to say about the Acura brand this year. Update: I ended up selling the car due to some issues with the seat that could not be resolved by the dealers.

I quickly learned what to expect from this car, even without owning or leasing it. The steering is sharp and responsive, especially with the SH-AWD. The powertrain delivers quick and strong acceleration, and the driving position is quite comfortable. The craftsmanship is far superior to the last generation TLX. However, the ride is unbearable, which is a big disappointment for a flagship sports sedan. On New England city roads, the new TLX is so stiff that I thought I was in my colleague's Ford Mustang. The ride is much rougher than the first-generation TLX, which was more refined. I recently drove an Audi A5 Sportback, and that is the kind of ride I expected: tight but with some dampening, certainly never jarring. Considering the new TLX is actually more along the size of the Audi A7, I'm amazed how much worse it drove from the A5 and the old TLX. Another side note: the road noise from the tires was also worse on this second-generation than the first-generation. If you're considering this car, please make sure your test drive is not only on freshly-paved highways. Request a back-road route as well! I was highly disappointed, even though I had a great lease deal on the table. I couldn't pull the trigger.

As a long-time Acura fan, I recently traded my 2020 RDX for a TLX A-Spec, and I couldn't be happier. The styling, both inside and out, is fantastic, and the long list of standard features is impressive. What's more, these features are often costly add-ons for other so-called luxury brands. The TLX A-Spec handles various road surfaces with ease, providing a comfortable ride while still being capable of impressive handling. The fit and finish are top-notch, with high-quality materials used throughout the interior. The seats are also truly excellent, providing both comfort and support. And let's not forget the incredible ELS stereo system! While I do have two minor complaints - the lack of rear seat legroom and the motor - they don't detract from my overall satisfaction with the car. The 4-cylinder turbo provides adequate power for daily driving, but it lacks the character and real performance that I get from my Genesis G70 3.3 Sport. However, with the A-Spec package, the TLX looks fast standing still. Although it doesn't provide the same thrill as my G70, the new TLX is still a big step forward. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

We upgraded from the TSX to the 2018 TLX and we couldn't be happier. I absolutely love the TLX and everything about it, especially the Tech package which is definitely worth the extra money. The car has great pickup for a 4 cylinder and is a joy to drive. It comfortably seats 4 people and is the perfect car for commuting. Not to mention, it looks really cool too! We've had the car for a year now and it has about 17k miles on it, but we haven't had any problems with it. We are so glad we chose the Acura TLX.

We have owned four Acuras so far, including the 2021 TLX A-Spec, 2014 MDX Tech, 2013 TL Elite, and 2005 TL. I have been driving the 2021 TLX for three months now and have covered 2500km. Here are the things I like about it: 1. The exterior styling is great, and I love every angle. 2. The handling is excellent, and it feels like it's on rails, even better than the 2013 TL, which also had double wishbone. 3. The ELS Audio System is awesome, although not significantly better than the 2013 TL or 2014 MDX. 4. The interior styling is modern and upscale, with great materials and accent lighting. 5. The Dynamic mode lets this car behave differently depending on my mood, whether I want an aggressive or laid-back driving experience. 6. The braking is solid. However, there are a few areas that could be improved: 1. There are too many gears, and the shifts happen way too often as a result. I generally drive in S transmission mode to get decent RPM before shifts and only go into D transmission on the highway for fuel economy. D Mode literally does six shifts in ten seconds under normal throttle, and while the shifts are smooth, this is annoying and takes away from the driving experience. 2. The car is slightly underpowered for an Acura TLX that competes with other high-end brands. It should definitely have 300+ HP and 300+lb_ft torque for a car this heavy. The Honda Accord 2.0 turbo is faster 0-100km. 3. The touchpad control system is not great, although not a deal-breaker. The multifunction dial on my 2013 TL and 2014 MDX was way better.

The TLX has been greatly under-rated by many reviewers, but I strongly disagree with them. I believe that there is a certain bias towards 'snob appeal' as the ultimate criteria for car ownership, rather than high quality, dependability, and general satisfaction. In my opinion, the Acura TLX is just as good as any other car in its class. This is actually my second Acura, having owned several Honda Accords earlier. I would say that the TLX (and the TL before that) is a better choice for a whole lot of reasons. For one, the RL (now RLX) is a fine car, but the new vehicle price of some $20,000 to $25,000 above a TLX does not deliver that much more value in proportion. The TLX has all the features, technology, choice of engines, etc. that anyone really needs. Feature for feature, the TLX is a far greater value overall. As a 'sport sedan', it combines the best in top-of-the-line value, with ease of driving, snappy pickup on the freeway, and much more.
