Acura Tlx problems
The Acura TLX is a four-door entry-level luxury sedan sold by Acura, a luxury division of Honda, since 2014. It is the successor to both the TL and TSX models. As of 2021, the discontinuation of the RLX leaves the TLX as the flagship sedan in Acura's lineup.
Design history
The Acura TLX was first shown as the "TLX Prototype", a sedan designed in Acura's Los Angeles Design Studio, as a replacement of the TL and TSX sedans. The production version was unveiled in April at the 2014 New York International Auto Show. Sales began in August, the TLX entered production during July at Marysville, Ohio, United States.
First generation (UB1/UB2/UB3/UB4; 2015)
Two powertrain options are available. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder DOHC i-VTEC engine with direct injection was offered with front-wheel drive only, mated to a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel steering (P-AWS). This model's chassis code is UB1. The Honda designed dual clutch transmission is the first to use a torque converter, which absorbs transmission gear shift shock, thus reducing NVH. The engine is rated at 206 hp (154 kW; 209 PS) with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg‑US (9.8 L/100 km; 29 mpg‑imp)/35 mpg‑US (6.7 L/100 km; 42 mpg‑imp)/28 mpg‑US (8.4 L/100 km; 34 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) compared to 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp)/31 mpg‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg‑imp)/26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) from the previous TSX. Honda estimates that the six-cylinder model is 1.5 seconds faster from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h).
A 3.5-liter direct injected SOHC VTEC V-6 with cylinder deactivation (VCM) is mated to Honda's first time use of a 9-speed automatic transmission (sourced from ZF), available with either P-AWS or all-wheel drive (SH-AWD). The SH-AWD system uses hydraulic clutches instead of the electromagnetic clutch packs found on the previous TL which significantly cuts weight, size and cost. The engine is rated at 290 hp (216 kW; 294 PS) and front-wheel drive models deliver 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp)/34 mpg‑US (6.9 L/100 km; 41 mpg‑imp)/25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg‑imp) (city/highway/combined) while all-wheel drive models are rated at 21 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 25 mpg‑imp)/31 mpg‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg‑imp)/25 mpg‑US (9.4 L/100 km; 30 mpg‑imp). Model codes are UB2 for the front-wheel drive and UB3 for the SH-AWD, which comes standard with a "Technology Package". TLX models configured with the V6 engine lose nearly 150 lb (68 kg) compared to the FWD TL, and over 225 lb (102 kg) compared to the SH-AWD TL.
Overall length compared to the previous TL was reduced by 3.8 inches (97 mm) while the wheelbase maintains the same length. As with the ninth-generation Accord, the TLX loses the front double wishbone suspension of the TSX and TL in favor of a MacPherson strut arrangement, and loses the TL's all-aluminum front subframe in favor of a lower cost friction stir welded aluminum and steel piece.
To significantly cut down on interior noise, triple door seals are used as well as additional sound insulation.

- VIN: 19UUB3F78HA

- Summary: On September 30, 2024 I received a notice from Acura titled “Important Safety Notice” (Recall Number 23V-751). The recall concerns a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft. On October 1, 2024 I contacted Nalley Acura of Marietta, Georgia about scheduling an appointment and was told that the first available appointment was not until July 24, 2025 (almost ten months later). I was also told that the recall is not a safety concern and that I can continue to drive my car. I find it incredulous that Acura can issue a “safety recall” and then claim that the first opportunity to perform the repair is ten months later. Being forced to wait ten months to repair a manufacturing defect is outrageous and dangerous. Is this a subterfuge by the Company to avoid performing the repairs? In addition, I am confused by the dealerships response that this is not a safety concern. The recall notice states “due to a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft, the connecting rod bearing can prematurely wear and seize, causing engine damage. A damaged engine may run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury”. Is the recall notice incorrect - that the matter under recall is not a safety concern? Additionally, I received a call from Honda Customer Service on Friday, October 4, 2024. Among other things, I was told that as part of the recall, I may be charged for a "diagnostic test" if the dealership looks at my car and finds a repair is not needed. Waiting ten months for a safety recall is unacceptable and I hope the NHTSA investigates this further and forces Acura to explain how it can take so long to perform the service caused by its manufacturing defect. Also, to incur a charge as part of the recall process is unacceptable and will only discourage consumers from taking their car to a dealer.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-30
- VIN: 19UUB2F5XGA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The following complaint is in relation to NHTSA Safety Recall 23V-751 and the Acura Corporation's unwillingness to recompense the registered owner for catastrophic damages that occurred to the engine. The vehicle in question is a 2016 Acura TLX, and the recall applied to the Acura MDX, Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey and Honda Ridgeline. The manufacturing defect, which potentially involved 248,999 vehicles, was the connecting rod bearing of the crankshaft prematurely wearing and seizing. This is precisely what occurred to this TLX. The chronological events of this incident are quite revealing. On Jan 2023, midwinter, while driving on [XXX] near the Canadian border, the engine completely lost power, leaving the registered owner, XXX stranded on the interstate alone for 30 minutes. There were no warning lights, only a knocking sound originating from the engine. The vehicle was eventually towed to a nearby auto shop. The vehicle was not towed to an Acura or Honda dealership due to the extended distance, as XXX was employed at the US Port of Entry on the US/Canadian border, a remote location. The mechanics at the auto shop determined the entire engine needed to be replaced and repairs were completed on [XXX] and XXX paid $6,360.30 out of pocket. An effort to be compensated by Acura was denied. As of Nov 2023, Honda has 1450 claims. According 23V-751, Honda received its 1st complaint regarding this matter on Feb 2020 and investigated through Sept of 2023. Only until [XXX] did Honda decide to conduct a safety recall, well after the catastrophic failure of the aforementioned TLX which occurred on Jan 2023. And it was only until Jan 2024 that notification (24-002)of this defect was initiated. Again, Acura refuses to accept any responsibility or accountability for this incident, nor did it care to investigate the matter in its entirety, simply stating if the vehicle was not inspected by an Acura dealership (typical response), they are absolved of any wrongdoing. I pulled over immediately and the steering wheel locked completely. I turned the car off and back after about 10 min and I was able to drive home. Luckily I was only 5 minutes away. I took it to the Acura dealer and after it was inspected they said it had to do with the steering however nothing was replaced or fixed. They advised me to let them know if it happens again. This is the first time it occurs however I’m afraid to drive this car especially on the freeway if the same incident occurs it can cause a major accident.

What a great car for the money! It's amazing how much of a difference it makes moving up from a Honda Accord. The 4 wheel steering is so much fun and the handling is precise and sporty. The 8-speed dual clutch transmission is smooth and sporty too. I'm even getting better highway mpg than I did with my Accord! My TLX 2.4 is getting from 37 to 39 mpg on the highway at c.70 mph with the air conditioning on. The seats are very comfortable and the ELS sound system is fantastic. If you test drive an Acura TLX, you'll probably agree that it's the best car out there in this price range.

The 2021 TLX advance package is an amazing car to drive, with a sport mode that is an absolute blast. However, one issue I found was that when the Acura logo on the grill and its controls get dirty or snowy, none of the convenience or safety features function properly. Overall, I highly recommend this car and I'm excited to see how the Type-S handles in comparison.

Vehicle year: 2023
I am currently on my fourth three-year Acura lease in a row. My journey with Acura began with a 2013 TSX Special Edition, followed by a 2016 TLX 2.4 Tech, and then a 2019 TLX 2.4 A-Spec. Recently, I took delivery of a 2021 TLX A-Spec and while I am enjoying it, I find myself somewhat conflicted. Each of my cars was generally an improvement over the one previous to it, offering enough changes to keep me interested enough to remain a loyal Acura customer. However, the all-new 2021 TLX is one of the biggest leaps that Acura has made in a number of years. This leap, though, may leave some longtime customers slightly frustrated. Where evolution and constant improvement is key to continued loyalty, the new TLX has an Achilles heel. Where the past few cars have always been better than the last, this new car, while still better in most ways, also falls short in a few areas. But let's start with what is good. Performance is definitely at the head of that list. Acura has finally given the TLX the base engine that it deserves. It’s basically a detuned version of that which powers the mighty Civic Type R and it is a strong performer. While lacking the rev happiness and true aural pleasure that was a mainstay of the previous two engines offered, it makes up for it by offering a strong punch and it moves this car with absolute authority. Gas mileage, thankfully, has thus far been better than the EPA estimate getting 24-25 in and around town and 32 on the highway. Unfortunately, while the engine is eager, Honda's new 10-speed transmission is simply not quite the dance partner that my previous car's 8-speed DCT was to the 2.4L. That DCT was simply seamless and with the exception of the occasional lag when down-shifting was always what made those cars a blast to drive in spite of the 2.4's somewhat limited power. The new tranny just feels like there may be a bit of work left to do on the software to get rid of some clumsiness and sharpen up its smoothness of operation. And this is where everything that follows really starts to be a list of tradeoffs from the old car to the new. The Chassis is all new and is said to be presently exclusive to Acura. The steering feel and overall composure are finally deserving of this car. One slight downside, at least in the A-Spec trim, is ride. While generally well composed over smooth to moderate surfaces, it quickly loses that composure when the going gets rough. Despite that shortcoming, the handling is quite impressive. Especially considering that Acura has now ditched its impressive PAWS all-wheel steering system. Another tradeoff, this one sacrificing turning radius which is fairly poor for a mid-sized sedan. Lastly, the exterior of the car is sharp and nicely improved, with a more aggressive yet balanced execution. The interior is a drastic change and mostly a better place to live, but some weaknesses quickly become apparent, primarily in the driver's seat. Its position and available adjustments are lacking, which can make it feel awkward. The next issue is Acura's new infotainment system. Both the interface and the sound system itself, while quite different, are simply not really an actual improvement over their previous tech. There is simply very little that is intuitive in using their new touchpad. However, overall, the car is a great improvement and a pleasure to drive. The new ELS 3D sound system is impressive overall, but it lacks the flawless and incredibly deep bass response of the previous ELS system, which is largely due to the deletion of the rear deck mounted subwoofer. Unfortunately, the front doors, which are now the new home for the subs, vibrate annoyingly under-arm when music with heavy bass is played. Additionally, there is a missing feature that was standard on my last A-Spec: auto-wipers. It's a simple deletion on Acura's part, but an odd omission for a previous owner buying the same trim of a new model. Despite these minor issues, the new TLX is a really nice, impressive handling and quick car to drive. If you're a spirited driver, make sure to get it with SH-AWD, as the power in this car is useless in FWD form. You can't put the power down even in the dry, and it's pretty nearly horrible in the wet. Update as of 4/1/2022: the car has been growing on me overall, but I highly recommend getting it with SH-AWD!

I've owned a total of 5 Hondas, including 2 Odysseys and 3 Accords. I've also had 2 Toyota Camrys and a 2008 Nissan Frontier, which has cost me a small fortune to keep on the road. However, I am now the proud owner of 2 Acuras, a 2017 MDX and a 2019 TLX. I've almost completely switched to Japanese cars now and I'm really liking the Acuras. They're similar to my previous Hondas, but with more bells and whistles, better handling, and higher interior quality. Although they're not perfect, they're definitely worth the money. I bought both the MDX and TLX used, as lease turn-ins from single owners. I absolutely love my TLX, which I've had for 3 weeks now and even took on a 500-mile trip last week. It performed great, even with a full car and luggage, achieving 27.9mpg on 87 octane. I love the SH AWD and it's just as great in the MDX. Even on wet roads, I can pull out into traffic without spinning the tires. Although I haven't driven either vehicle in the snow, I'm confident that with the SH AWD systems, they'll be fine. The TLX's weight will help in winter conditions and the SH AWD will be super helpful pulling out and going up hills. Only winter tires help for stopping on ice and snow. Although I'm not currently commuting, this is my commuter car and I'm confident it'll be great. It has more horsepower, better shocks, and a quieter interior than my previous Accord, so it should be even better. The trip I took last week was unbelievable, thanks to all the safety aids, lane assist, adaptive cruise, raw horsepower, and silky transmission. It was just effortless to drive. Lastly, if you put it in Sport or Sport+ mode, it really perks up the throttle and transmission response, turning it into a lively vehicle.Compared to my Camry SE V6, the TLX stays in sport mode and is one of the quickest cars I have owned. It consistently does sub 6 second 0-60s with more panache and excellence. I absolutely love this car and believe Acura is on the right track with their cars and SUVs. Hopefully, they will continue to impress. Lastly, I chose not to buy a brand new Accord Touring (similar price) because I prefer naturally aspirated engines. I keep my vehicles for too long to worry about the longevity of a turbo engine. I would rather have a year old V6 than a brand-new turbo 4, and I don't care which is faster. The 3.5 V6 and the new Accord 2.0 4-cyl have similar HP and torque, and I believe the Accord is faster, but I still prefer naturally aspirated cars. Update 2/23/2023: I have owned this car since Aug 2021 and have had no issues other than recalls with either of our Acuras. I am still loving the car and have come to appreciate the Acura brand more. They do a great job making tight, rattle-free cars. Since I bought the car, we moved to a rural area in TN with horrible roads, but this car has some of the best shocks I have ever experienced, and it has been wonderful. I use sport mode a lot more here because of the hills and curves. I almost sold it (and its bigger sibling, our 2017 MDX) this past Monday for a Lincoln Navigator, but couldn’t get past the Lincolns shaking and noise. We left the dealership in the MDX to go home and were so relieved I didn’t close the deal. Then I drove my TLX and was excited I didn’t sell the car. We drove a Lincoln Navigator for years, and this new model of Navigator I would consider a step down. I am so glad we kept the Acuras, and I am glad they were both made before the disease outbreak. You can’t beat Honda quality prior to 2020. We are going to keep driving these cars, and if Lincoln improves, we will revisit buying a new one. Money wasn’t the problem; it was quality.

If you're interested in drag racing, why are you shopping for a sedan? This car comes with so many standard features that the only reason to upgrade is for the fabulous blue. It has a ton of pep and nice touches. Personally, I prefer the TLX over the grandpa's Lexus and the dated Infiniti. If you're not interested in leasing, you can avoid the high maintenance costs of German cars. Update: I still enjoy the car after a year, but at 5000 miles, it needed a new steering gear box. Fortunately, the warranty covered the $3200 repair. I always keep my cars under warranty for this exact reason. It used to be that engine or transmission repairs were expensive, but now everything costs over $1000.

The car's vibration and shaking at highway speeds is unacceptable and has made driving on the highway, where I spend most of my time, very uncomfortable. Despite having a regional representative come out and drive the car, Acura customer care has failed to address the issue and instead dismissed it as a 'characteristic of the vehicle'. As a loyal Honda driver of 10 years, I am disappointed and frustrated with this response. I am left with no choice but to pursue legal action under the lemon law. It is my hope that Acura will take responsibility for this issue and provide a satisfactory resolution.

My 2018 Acura TLX Advance AWD developed a wiring harness problem after 2000 miles and has been in the shop for over a month. Fortunately, it qualifies under the 'Lemon Law'. As a long-term loyal Honda/Acura owner, I am concerned about the quality of Acura, which seems to have declined over the years. Additionally, I find the idle stop feature to be worthless and turn it off every time I start the engine.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I understand that you're experiencing some issues with your TLX AWD 3.5L 2020 vehicle. It seems that there's an odd rumbling/vibration in the steering wheel and sometimes throughout the entire vehicle, regardless of road conditions and speed. I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you. If a smooth ride is important to you, it's understandable that you're concerned. You mentioned that you asked the dealer about this issue, but they assured you that it's normal. However, it's important to note that this issue is not mentioned in Edmunds' reviews, and if you had known about it beforehand, you may have considered a different vehicle. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. Best regards.

This car has a lot of great features: it's luxurious, good-looking, reasonably priced, and the perfect size for both city and long trips. Acura is known for its reliability and engineering, which are definitely present in this model. After owning a TLX for 4 years and driving 30K miles, I can say that while some of the positive aspects are true, there are also some downsides. On the positive side, the interior is quiet for its class and price range, the cockpit layout is well-designed, the acceleration is decent, it's very stable in corners, and it looks great. The materials are also of good quality. However, there are some negatives to consider. The transmission can be problematic, with a dangerous lag when accelerating from a full stop or switching from reverse, and it often selects the wrong gear during descents or ascents. It also has a tendency to override driver input from the paddle shifters unless it's in manual mode. Additionally, the car has gone through two batteries in just 4 years, which is unusual for a car in California. There are also some knocking noises coming from various parts of the car, which is not typical for an Acura at this mileage. Finally, the subwoofer in the rear of the car buzzes at anything other than low music volume. Overall, it's disappointing to see a once rock-solid brand slide to this point. While this isn't my first Acura/Honda product, it will unfortunately be my last.

I purchased this car brand new, but unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with it. Despite my attempts to have Acura fix the problems, they have not been resolved. These issues include having to replace multiple batteries, the AC turning off randomly, and the door locks not working. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this vehicle.
