Common 1999 Acura Rl problems
The Acura RL, produced in 1999, is known for its reliability. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported, which potential buyers should be aware of.
One of the most common issues is related to the car's transmission. Some owners have experienced rough shifting between first and second gear, which can be caused by internal problems within the transmission. In some cases, this issue has required the replacement of the transmission, which can be costly. It is essential to have the car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic, especially if the vehicle has high mileage, to ensure that the transmission is in good working condition.
Another problem that owners have reported is related to the car's drive shafts, which are made of carbon fiber and are supposed to be lightweight
. However, these drive shafts can be expensive to replace if they fail, particularly if the center bearing on the drive shaft goes bad, causing a loud whine. This issue can be particularly annoying, as the noise can be very loud and obnoxious.
The Acura RL's timing belt and water pump are also critical components that should be inspected before purchasing the car. These parts should be changed regularly, as failure to do so can result in significant engine damage.
Parts for the Acura RL can be expensive, particularly if they are not interchangeable with other Acura models
. This is especially true for drivetrain-related components, such as the drive shafts.
It is essential to note that the Acura RL's reliability is highly dependent on how well the car was taken care of by its previous owners
. As these cars age, it is becoming increasingly challenging to find parts, and they may be more prone to breakdowns, particularly if they have not been well-maintained.
In summary, while the Acura RL is known for its reliability, potential buyers should be aware of the common problems that have been reported by owners. These include transmission issues, problems with the drive shafts, and the importance of regularly changing the timing belt and water pump. It is crucial to have the car inspected by a mechanic before purchasing, particularly if the vehicle has high mileage. Additionally, potential buyers should be prepared for the possibility of expensive repairs if the car has not been well-maintained.

- VIN: JH4KA9656XC
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: THE REAR VIEW MIRROR IN MY WIFE'S 1999 ACURA RL HAS A LIQUID SUBSTANCE SLOSHING AROUND INSIDE. MY WIFE WAS COMPLAINING OF A HEADACHE THAT DAY WHEN SHE CAME IN, AND, NOT KNOWING THE CONTENTS OF THE MIRROR, I REMOVED IT FOR FEAR THAT IT WOULD LEAK. THE DEALERSHIP QUOTES $300+ TO REPLACE, WHICH I FEEL IS UNREASONABLE FOR THE TYPE OF PART WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. I LOCATED OTHER CONSUMERS WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, EXCEPT THAT THEY LEFT THEIR MIRROR IN PLACE AND IT EITHER LEAKED OR EXPLODED. APPARENTLY THE LIQUID INSIDE THE MIRROR IS CORROSIVE BECAUSE IN EVERY CASE THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR WAS RUINED WHEREVER THE SUBSTANCE CAME IN CONTACT WITH IT. I THEN CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER OF THE MIRROR BUT THEY HAVE SO FAR IGNORED MY CALLS AND EMAILS. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-07-11
- VIN: JH4KA9656XC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: OPDS SENSORTRIGGERS SRS: SRS LIGHT RESET 5 TIMES SINCE 02/04 ONE TIME BY DEALERSHIP RIGHT BEFORE PURCHASE OF PRE CERTIFIED VEH IN 2004. THE LAST TIME WAS JULY OF 2007 WHEN I WAS TOLD I WOULD NEED A NEW CABLE REEL AND DRIVERS AIR BAG PRICED AT 1468.00 AT THAT TIME I RESEARCHED SRS PROBLEMS AND CALLED A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT THAT THERE WAS A WARRANTY EXTENSION IN MARCH 2006. THE PASSENGER SIDE OPDS SENSOR WAS FAULTY AND REPLACED 05/05. LABOR WAS CHARGED 130.50. I HAD TO FIND OUT THROUGH A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THIS HAS BEEN A ISSUE WITH ACURAS. I THEN WENT BACK TO THE LOCAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND BROUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION THEY OWED ME MONIES BACK FOR THE LABOR CHARGED DUE TO THE WARRANTY EXTENTION. THERE WAS NO NOTICE THAT WENT OUT TO THE CUSTOMERS EVEN IF THEY HAD PAID FOR THE SERVICES NOW COVERED NO ONE WAS NOTIFIED EXCEPT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTS.I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO FILE THROUGH THE COOPERATE OFFICE IN ORDER TO GET MY REFUND. I CALLED CORPORATE AND FILED A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE MONIES OWED AND A CHARGE OF 1468.00 TO REPLACE AN AIRBAG THAT HAD NEVER BEEN DEPLOYED. THEY INITIALLY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE PARTS ONLY. WHEN I ADVISED CORPORATE AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT I WANTED THE AIRBAG UNDEPLOY RELEASED TO A BODYSHOP FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION THAT A DEPLOYED AIRBAG WOULD NOT BE OF ANY HELP IN DETERMINING A MALFUNCTION OF AIRBAG SYSTEM, THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG AND THE CABLE REEL AT NO CHARGE. THIS IS A REAL CONCERN WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THE CAR BEEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION AND THE AIRBAG SYSTEM WAS FAULTY? *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-09-02
- VIN: JH4KA9653XC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER
- Summary: ENGINE QUIT WHILE DRIVING BECAUSE OF FAILURE OF EFI RELAY WHICH CUT OFF POWER TO THE FUEL PUMP. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED. PART WAS REPLACED - OLD PART NOT AVAILABLE. 1) I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT INTO A LOCAL STREET WHEN THE ENGINE DIED. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC NEAR AND I WAS ABLE TO PUSH THE CAR BACK INTO AN ADJACENT LOT. 2) HOWEVER, IF I HAD BEEN ON THE FREEWAY JUST ONE BLOCK AWAY, I WOULD HAVE LOST POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES, AND HAVE BEEN IN MUCH HEAVIER TRAFFIC, WHICH COULD EASILY HAVE LED TO A HIGH-SPEED COLLISION. 3) I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP WHERE, FOR $300, THEY DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AND REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE PART. THE MECHANIC COMMENTED THAT THE DESIGN OF SUPPLYING POWER TO THE FUEL PUMP THROUGH TWO DIFFERENT RELAYS WAS POORLY THOUGHT OUT.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-25
- VIN: JH4KA9650XC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE SRS INDICATOR COMES ON AND STAYS ON WHEN A CELL PHONE OR LAPTOP IS USED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THIS HINDERS THE PROPER OPERATION OF THE AIR BAGS WHICH COULD RESULT IN A NEEDLESS DEATH TO THE PASSENGER. THE LIGHT CAN ONLY BE RESET BY THE DEALER WHICH COST $84.00 PER HOUR. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATION ON THE WEB, IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY A PROBLEM IN THE ACURA RLS BUT ALSO A PROBLEM WITH ALL ACURA VEHICLES (RL, TL, TL-S, RSX AND THE MDX). THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS WHICH WOULD HAVE SHIELDED THE OPDS SENSORS FROM EVERYDAY INTERFERENCES FROM LAPTOPS AND CELL PHONES RADIO FREQUENCIES. PLEASE GIVE THIS MATTER SOME ATTENTION BY CONTACTING THE ACURA CORPORATION AND ASKING FOR AN EXPLANATION OF WHAT ACTION THEY INTEND TO TAKE TO CORRECT THIS ENGINEERING DEFECT. AS WITH MOST MAJOR CORPORATIONS, THE AVERAGE CONSUMER HAS NO WAY OF CONTACTING THEM DIRECTLY. THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU. *AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2000-09-01
- VIN: 19UYA3256XL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SKIP GEARS VERY EARLY ON AT ABOUT 5000 MILES. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALERSHIP IT STILL LACKS POWER AT TIMES AND DOES NOT ALWAYS HAVE PASSING POWER. I FEEL THAT THE STRAIN ON THE TRANSMISSION ALSO PLACED A HUGE STRAIN ON THE ENGINE AND HAS CAUSED PROBLEMS WITH IT. *AK
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-02-24
- VIN: 19UUA5649XA
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: RADIATOR GOT PUNCTURED BY A LESS THAN A DIME-SIZED OBJECT, THROUGH THE LOWER FRONT GRILL. THE AIR CONDITIONING PARTS WERE NARROWLY MISSED. THERE SHOULD BE A BETTER DESIGN TO PROTECT THE RADIATOR FROM PUNCTURES FROM ROAD DEBRIS. FORTUNATELY, WE MADE IT HOME WITHOUT OVERHEATING, SINCE IT APPARENTLY OCCURED JUST BEFORE WE CAME BACK HOME, WITHOUT COMPLETELY LOSING COOLANT. ACURA REFUSED TO COVER IT UNDER WARRANTEE, CLAIMING THE RADIATOR WAS NOT DEFECTIVE. BUT IT GOT PUNCTURED BECAUSE OF POOR DEFECTIVE DESIGN OF PROTECTING IT FROM ORDINARY ROAD DEBRIS OF NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING ON PAVED HIGHWAYS! THE RESULTANT FAILURE OF THE RADIATOR FROM ROAD DEBRIS PUNCTURE BECAUSE OF INADEQUATE PROTECTIVE DESIGN, SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTEE. REPLACING THE RADIATOR, DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN!*AK

1999 Acura Rl recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1999 Acura Rl.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.
- Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. A TRANSMISSION CASE BOLT CAN LOOSEN AND FALL OUT ALLOWING THE TRANSMISSION TO DISENGAGE FROM THE DIFFERENTIAL.
- Consequence: THE VEHICLE COULD LOSE POWER TO THE DRIVE WHEELS WITHOUT WARNING. ALSO, SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION INTO THE PARK POSITION WOULD NOT LOCK THE WHEELS, AND A PARKED VEHICLE COULD MOVE UNEXPECTEDLY IF THE PARKING BRAKE IS NOT SET.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REDESIGNED BOLT.

Great vehicle! It's been almost 8 years since I bought it and it still runs like a charm. I've been diligent with regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance, and the car has performed exceptionally well. However, I must admit that dealer maintenance at 75 and 100k can be a bit expensive. Overall, this has been the best car I've ever owned!
-
I bought this car used a few months ago and I must say, for the money, it's unbeatable! The ride and comfort level are exceptional and it falls into a complicated bracket. The low end pulling power is very good.
-
This is a great car that competes with some tough rivals, such as the Lexus LS400, Mercedes E Class, BMW 740, and Infinity Q45. While it may not outperform these cars in every category, it certainly holds its own, especially considering its price. After 39,000 miles, I have noticed some ride deterioration, with potholes being more noticeable than they were 2 years ago. Additionally, the paint quality is not the best, with several specks where the paint is chipping up. However, overall, it is still a fantastic car.
-
I've been driving my 99RL for almost two years now. I purchased the car primarily for its ride comfort, as my daily commute is 85 miles. I bought the car with 67K miles on it, and since then, I've put over 110K miles on it with only two minor issues. One of the rear windows stopped operating properly, and I found a broken plastic piece. The second issue was a failed O2 sensor. The V6 engine has more than enough power to merge or pass, and it does so quietly. Both the front and rear seats are extremely comfortable, and the ride is smooth regardless of the road surface. The AC cools the interior quickly, and the heater waiting until the engine warms up is a nice touch.
-
What a fantastic pre-owned vehicle! You paid $12,000 for a 1999 model with only 48k miles, and it looks like it has been stored in a time capsule. It's just like new! After considering and shopping for luxury sedans from MBZ, Lexus, and BMW, this is without a doubt the best value out there. You get all the luxury with ultimate reliability as a bonus.

I bought my Acura used with 110k miles on it. While they are known for their longevity, unfortunately, mine didn't last forever and I ended up needing a transmission replacement at 149k miles. The cost for a rebuilt transmission with labor was around $3000. It's important to note that when purchasing an Acura, it's worth checking the price of a timing belt replacement, which can cost around $1200. If the timing belt breaks, it can cause serious damage to the engine. Additionally, Acura parts can be expensive and it's recommended to have repairs done at the dealership, as many independent shops may not have the necessary expertise. I've also experienced some issues with the front end pulling, which required multiple alignments. Again, I found that having the dealership handle the alignment was the most effective solution. Lastly, it's worth noting that the valves should be adjusted at 110k miles, which can cost around $400. While the costs can add up quickly, it's important to properly maintain your Acura to ensure its longevity. Despite the lower highway mileage of around 20 mpg, I still find my Acura to be a reliable and enjoyable car to drive.
