1999 Mercury Mystique problems
The Ford Mondeo I (first generation) is a mid-size car that was produced by Ford, beginning on 23 November 1992, with sales beginning on 22 March 1993. It is also known as the Mk I Mondeo; the 1996 facelift versions are usually designated Mk II. Available as a four-door saloon, a five-door hatchback, and a five-door estate, all models for the European market were produced at Ford's plant in the Belgian city of Genk. In December 1992, Autocar published a section on the Mondeo, and how it would conquer rivals.
Intended as a world car, it replaced the Ford Sierra in Europe, the Ford Telstar in a large portion of Asia and other markets, while the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique replaced the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz in North America. Despite being billed as a world car, the only external items the Mondeo shared initially with the Contour were the windscreen, front windows, front mirrors and door handles. Thus, the CDW27 project turned out not to be a true world car in the sense that the original Ford Focus and newer Fords developed under the "One Ford" policy turned out to be. The first generation Mondeo was replaced in 2000, by the larger second generation; in the United States and Canada, the Contour/Mystique were replaced initially by the Focus and later the Fusion.
Design and development
Mk I
Instigated in 1986 (just before its Sierra predecessor received a major facelift), the design of the car cost Ford US$6 billion. It was one of the most expensive new-car programmes ever. The Mondeo was significant as its design and marketing were shared between Ford USA in Dearborn and Ford of Europe. Its codename while under development reflected thus: CDW27 signified that it straddled the C and D size classes and was a "world car". The head of the Mondeo project was John Oldfield, headquartered at Ford Dunton in Essex.
A large proportion of the high development cost was due to the Mondeo being a completely new design, sharing very little, if anything, with the Ford Sierra. Unlike the Sierra, the Mondeo is front-wheel drive in its most common form, with a rarer four-wheel drive version available on the Mk I car only. Over-optimistically, the floor pan was designed to accept virtually any conceivable drivetrain, from a transverse inline-four engine to a longitudinal V-8. This resulted in a hugely intrusive and mostly disused bellhousing cover and transmission tunnel. Resultingly the front interior, especially the footwells, feels more cramped than would be expected from a vehicle of this size. The Mondeo featured new manual and automatic transmissions and sophisticated suspension design, which give it class-leading handling and ride qualities, and subframes front and rear to give it executive car refinement. The automatic transmission featured electronic control with sport and economy modes plus switchable overdrive. The program manager from 1988, and throughout its early development, was David Price.
By 1989, Ford had confirmed that it would be launching an all-new front-wheel drive car to replace the Sierra within the next four years, although it had not yet decided whether the Sierra name would continue or be replaced, with some subsequent reports even hinting that the Cortina name could make a comeback, having been axed in 1982 when replaced by the Sierra. Several prototypes were tested that year, but the launch of the Nissan Primera in 1990 prompted Ford to make a number of major alterations to the final product, as it saw the new competitor from Nissan to be the benchmark car in this sector, having previously identified the Honda Accord as the class leader.
The car was launched in the midst of turbulent times at Ford of Europe, when the division was haemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars, and had gained a reputation in the motoring press for selling products which had been designed by accountants rather than engineers. The fifth-generation Escort and third-generation Orion of 1990 was the zenith of this cost-cutting/high-price philosophy, which was by then beginning to backfire on Ford, with the cars being slated for their substandard ride and handling, though a facelift in 1992 had seen things improve a little. The Sierra had sold well, but not as well as the all-conquering Cortina before it, and in Britain, it had been overtaken in the sales charts by the newer Vauxhall Cavalier. Previously loyal customers were already turning to rival European and Japanese products, and by the time of the Mondeo's launch, the future of Europe as a Ford manufacturing base was hanging in the balance. The new car had to be good, and it had to sell. It was unveiled to the public on 23 November 1992, although sales would not begin for another four months. At this stage, Ford confirmed that the new car would feature a completely new name and would be called the Mondeo.
Safety was a high priority in the Mondeo design, with a driver's side airbag (it was the first-ever car sold from the beginning with a driver's airbag in all of its versions, which helped it achieve the European Car of the Year title for 1994), side-impact bars, seat belt pretensioners, and antilock braking systems (higher models) as standard features. Other features for its year included adaptive damping, self-leveling suspension (top estate models), traction control (V6 and 4WD versions), and heated front windscreen, branded Quickclear.
The interiors were usually well-appointed, featuring velour trim, an arm rest with CD and tape storage, central locking (frequently remote), power windows (all round on higher models), power mirrors, illuminated entry, flat-folding rear seats, etc. Higher-specification models had leather seats, trip computers, electric sunroof, CD changer, and alloy wheels.
During its development, Ford used the 1986 Honda Accord and in the later stages the 1990 Nissan Primera as the class benchmarks that the CDW27 had to beat.

Common 1999 Mercury Mystique problems
The Mercury Mystique 1999 is a compact sedan that was popular in its time, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1999 Mercury Mystique:
- Transmission Failure: Many owners of the 1999 Mercury Mystique have reported transmission failure, which can be a significant issue. The problem is often caused by a faulty torque converter or a damaged solenoid. When the transmission fails, the car may not move at all, or it may shift roughly between gears. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly repair.
- Engine Overheating: Another common problem with the 1999 Mercury Mystique is engine overheating. This issue is often caused by a faulty thermostat or a leaking cooling system. When the engine overheats, it can cause significant damage to the engine block, cylinder heads, and other critical components. If left unaddressed, engine overheating can lead to a complete engine failure, which is a costly repair.
- Power Steering Failure: The power steering system in the 1999 Mercury Mystique is also prone to failure. The problem is often caused by a leak in the power steering system or a faulty power steering pump. When the power steering system fails, it can make the car difficult to steer, especially at low speeds.
- Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump in the 1999 Mercury Mystique is also prone to failure. The problem is often caused by a faulty fuel pump relay or a clogged fuel filter. When the fuel pump fails, the car may not start at all, or it may stall while driving.
- Air Conditioning Failure: The air conditioning system in the 1999 Mercury Mystique is also prone to failure. The problem is often caused by a leak in the air conditioning system or a faulty compressor. When the air conditioning system fails, it can make the car uncomfortable to drive, especially in hot weather.
- Electrical Issues: The 1999 Mercury Mystique is also prone to electrical issues, such as blown fuses, faulty wiring, and malfunctioning sensors. These issues can cause various problems, such as the car not starting, the dashboard lights not working, or the car not shifting into gear.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Some owners of the 1999 Mercury Mystique have reported excessive oil consumption. The problem is often caused by worn piston rings or a damaged cylinder wall. When the car consumes too much oil, it can lead to engine damage and reduced performance.
In conclusion, while the 1999 Mercury Mystique is a reliable car, it has its share of common problems. If you own a Mercury Mystique 1999, it's essential to be aware of these issues and address them promptly to avoid more significant problems down the road. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify these issues early on and prevent costly repairs.
Is the Mercury Mystique the same as the Ford?
Since its introduction in 1995, the Mystique has been Mercury's counterpart to the Ford Contour. Based on the same platform, the Mercury has differentiated itself by having different styling and trim packages. But for all intents and purposes, the Contour and Mystique were the same car.
What year was the Mercury Mystique made?
The Contour and Mystique, sold from 1995-2000, were, in the U.S., offered only in a four-door sedan version.
Was Mercury nicer than Ford?
What is the difference between a Ford and a Mercury? Most Mercury models were higher trim, than Ford models, but lower trim, than Lincoln. Mercury had more standard features, than Ford and was priced higher than Ford, but less than Lincoln.
Why did Ford stop Mercury?
Ford completely phased out the Mercury brand in 2011, as the company refocused its marketing and engineering efforts solely on the Ford and Lincoln brands. “Mercury has been a tremendous line for Ford Motor Company because it filled the niche between our Ford and Lincoln lineups,” said Kreipke.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-11-23
- VIN: 3MEFM66L9XM
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: 1. DASH WARP CAUSES VISIBILITY PROBLEMS, DEFROSTER MALFUNCTION, LOOSE TRIM. I DROVE OVER A SEAM IN THE ROADWAY AT AN OVERPASS (SMALL BUMP) & THE VENT TRIM POPPED LOOSE. THIS IS SIMPLY AN AGING ISSUE AS THERE WAS NO UNUSUAL EVENT. MY CAR IS A 1999 MERCURY MYSTIQUE, BUT THIS ISSUE IS ALSO PREVALENT ON THE FORD 1999 & 2000 CONTOUR, AND SOME 1998 MODELS WITH THE NEWER STYLE DASH. 2. THE TRIM POPPED LOOSE FROM THE DASH WHILE COMMUTING ON I-95 TO WORK. THE VENT TRIM CAME TO REST IN FRONT OF THE AIR BAG & ON MY ARMS AS I DROVE, BUT FORTUNATELY DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. 3. THE VENT TRIM WAS PLACED LOOSELY ONTO THE DASH SO THE DEFROSTER WOULD STILL BE USABLE, BUT THE WARPED DASH PREVENTS IT FROM BEING PROPERLY SECURED. A NEW VENT TRIM WILL NOT FIX THIS PROBLEM. THERE WAS AN OLD RECALL WHICH INCLUDED A 'REPAIR KIT', BUT IT HAS EXPIRED. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE RECALL RE-INSTATED. *NM

Hello! Thank you for considering our car. We purchased it new and have driven it for 112,000 miles. We did have to replace the timing belt at around 100,000 miles, but this is a common maintenance issue for cars with timing belts. We recommend replacing it at 95,000 miles as a precaution to avoid any potential issues. Overall, it's a great car that's fun to drive and gets excellent gas mileage, with 28 to 33 mpg in the city or on the highway. While there are a couple of cosmetic issues, such as peeling paint on the grille, it's still in good condition. We live in a snowy area and it handles well, unless we get an unusual amount of snow. My husband drives it to work every day, which is a 7-mile rural commute. We hope it lasts as long as our old '91 Tracer, which had an impressive 315,000 miles when we sold it! Please let us know if you have any questions or would like to take it for a test drive.

I have a 99 mystique and it's been an amazing car for me. With 130k miles on it, I bought it in 2009 with 80k miles for only $2,250. It's now 2013 and it's still running strong! Of course, like any car, it's had a few issues - my alternator went out and was difficult to replace, and my battery, starter, and O2 sensor are starting to go bad. But these are all expected issues that come with owning a car. The only things that I'm not too happy about are that my front windows and sunroof don't work, and my brake light and blinkers are out. Overall, I've had this car for about 4 years and have spent around $500 a year plus about $1k on repairs, but I'm still very happy with it and will probably get another one.

I also have a 1997 Mystique LS. I agree that the 1999 version seems to track better than the 1997. The handling is very secure at all speeds and the 2.5 liter Duratec engine is both strong and smooth. I travel a lot at freeway speeds and average an impressive 27-29 mpg, which is pretty spectacular for an automatic V6 powered sedan. However, one caveat is that my car is not very quiet, with lots of wind and road noise. Interestingly, in 1999 Consumer Reports rated the car as well as the Accord and better than the Maxima. The only negative reported was under 'integrity' (seals, fit and finish). In this area, the 1997 made in Mexico is better. Still, if you enjoy driving, this is a pretty slick ride.

I've had this car for five years and nearly 80k miles now. It was the only American made sedan I could find with a manual transmission, ABS and a V-6 at the time. I opted for every available option; the power seat, sunroof, traction control and split folding leather seats have definitely come in handy. I always enjoy driving it, although it does have some limitations, particularly the drink holders and road noise at highway speeds. Fortunately, very little has gone wrong that wasn't fixed under warranty (knock on wood) so I've been quite pleased with that. Generally, it's a much sportier and more comfortable car than you'd expect for the price and I am very happy with it.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on my 1999 Mercury Mystique Ls. I absolutely love how comfortable the ride is, thanks to the soft yet supportive leather seats and great shocks. Additionally, I find all of the dash buttons to be easily accessible and straightforward to understand. The styling of both the interior and exterior is very nice and definitely doesn't look cheap like so many other cars. In fact, I think this car looks like it should cost more than it actually does!

The car looks great! I wish I had researched this model before purchasing it. Unfortunately, it had 105,000 miles on it when I bought it. However, the car runs great, despite the check engine light coming on frequently. I have had to replace the thermostat, flush the cooling system, and change the hoses, but overall it has been a good experience. The Catalyst Converter needs to be changed, and the rear defogger grid lines burn out too quickly. It averages about 21 mpg and has some minor electrical issues. If you are interested in purchasing this model, I suggest looking for one with low miles. Lastly, the regulator on the driver's side window had to be replaced. In conclusion, I think this is a decent Ford product.

At first, it seemed like a great deal - low mileage, good price, and the previous owner had kept up with all the scheduled maintenance. However, after six months, the timing belt blew out on the highway (yes, it actually blew out) with only 55,000 miles on the car. To make matters worse, the power steering fluid began leaking and even rotted out the sway bar bushings. Unfortunately, I've already spent nearly a third of what I originally paid for the car on repairs. Just a word of caution for anyone considering a similar purchase!

Hey there! I have a 99 Mercury Mystique and I feel like I know more about the vehicle than an actual mechanic. Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with the car lately. The paint is peeling off and there's rust on the roof, and to top it off, the check engine light keeps coming on and costing me more money. I've had to replace the catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, spark plug wires, starter, and even the alternator. What else could possibly go wrong?

The car experienced some issues during the first week of use, such as the keyless trunk release being inoperative. However, these issues were promptly addressed and resolved. Although there were some subsequent issues with rattling windows and dashboards, these were also resolved through multiple visits to the repair shop. It is unfortunate that the dash has warped again after two years, but it is important to note that the warranty has expired. Despite this, the car remains a reliable and well-designed vehicle.

It sounds like you've had a great experience with your car overall! Although you did have a problem with the dash, it's great to hear that Ford was able to fix it even after the car was off warranty. The V6 engine sounds like it provides plenty of power, and it's even better that your car is loaded with all the options. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
