The Volvo XC40 is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV (C-segment) manufactured by Volvo Cars. It was unveiled on 21 September 2017 as the smallest SUV model from Volvo, below the XC60. Orders started in September 2017, and manufacturing began in November 2017.
Aside with conventional petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid model was introduced in 2019, and a battery electric vehicle model was released in 2020. Both the plug-in hybrid and the battery electric versions were marketed as the XC40 Recharge. In 2024, Volvo renamed the battery electric XC40 to the Volvo EX40, aligning it with newer battery electric models such as the EX30 and the EX90.
A coupe version of the battery electric model with a sloping rear roof was released in 2021 as the C40 Recharge. It was renamed to the Volvo EC40 since 2024.
The XC40 was given the European Car of the Year Award at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. and the car was named Car of the Year Japan for 2018/2019.

The seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly. This is a really good little crossover with pretty good luxury features for the price. It has been very minimal and quite reliable so far. Although the infotainment is a bit annoying because it doesn't make android auto full-screen and the seats could be a bit more premium, it's definitely nicer to live and drive than the CX-5 or CX-30, especially when it comes to comfort and features. Additionally, the paint and corrosion protection is top-notch, which is primarily the reason I bought it over the Mazdas. My old Mazda 3 undercarriage was nearly completely rusted after a couple of years due to the weather. I have heard there were some electronic gremlins, but so far, I have had no issues and stop-start works pretty much like my old Mazda (though I disable it most of the time because it does degrade the starter and doesn't help economy that much). CTA and BLIS are awesome, and the driving feel is definitely really good, though the steering is a bit light. Also, it saved me from some collisions, so top marks so far. Currently, there are 15k miles on the odometer. This is a great car, maybe a bit expensive, but it's definitely worth it for the style, safety, and comfort.

This little car has an amazing amount of safety technology for the price. Some things do require an extra package, but many other cars in this price range don’t even have similar options. The engine has a wow factor too; it will push you into the seat a bit. The upgraded stereo is also worth doing if you can. Update: I'm still loving it!

I recently traded in my 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sahara for the XC40 and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Although I had the option to choose any Volvo model, I was immediately drawn to the XC40 R Design in bursting blue. With just over 1000 miles on it, I can confidently say that the ride is outstanding and it handles the road like a nimble athlete. I prefer to keep the back seats permanently down and cover it with a quilted movers blanket, as I like the 2 person wagon style. The Volvo is a solid and high-quality vehicle that I look forward to driving every day. It requires hi-test gas, but I knew that before making the purchase. Maximum performance is a must for me! While most of the controls are on the touch screen, I found it easy to get used to. My only complaint is that when changing radio stations, the song that comes on doesn't start from the beginning like it did in my Jeep or Subaru Outbacks. All in all, it's an enjoyable and fun ride with comfy seats too!

I completely agree with another reviewer that the HVAC is very quiet and effective. It's super easy to change the temperature or other options with just a couple of taps. In the R Design, the materials are excellent and it feels minimalist yet high quality. I love all the thoughtful storage compartments and the built-in trash can. It's really fun to drive, and in the normal comfort mode, I get slightly better than advertised mileage. I have experienced a small issue where occasionally the car doesn’t recognize the remote, but pushing the lock or unlock button resolves it. I have an appointment next week to take it in for investigation. I also wish it had wireless CarPlay, but I found a great adapter and it works flawlessly.

I recently purchased a new 2021 xc40. Unfortunately, I have experienced some dangerous malfunctions with the auto start/stop feature and the city safe auto braking system. It was quite concerning when the auto braking system went off randomly while I was traveling at 50mph. I have found it difficult to bring the car in for service as many Volvo dealers do not have loaner fleets, unlike other luxury brands. Additionally, I have found that the owner support hotline/Volvo on call is not very knowledgeable about the tech systems in the car. Despite these challenges, I still have a lot of respect for the Volvo brand. However, I would advise others to consider other luxury brands until Volvo's service catches up at both the dealer and corporate level.

I really like the look and feel of this little SUV, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the collision avoidance system. Despite turning off all of the safety features, the system keeps going off for no apparent reason. It has caused some scary moments, such as hitting the brakes and yanking me left into oncoming traffic, even on country roads with no lines. I have taken it to service several times, but unfortunately, they have not been able to resolve the issue yet. I am still waiting for a response from Sweden, but it has been longer than expected. Additionally, I have had to have an airbag replaced and the side panel keeps falling down, so it needs to go back to the shop for repairs. Overall, I am disappointed with these issues, but I am hopeful that they will be resolved soon.

When our new Volvo was delivered, I wanted to test the automatic back-up braking system to ensure it worked as described. However, when my wife tried backing up with her foot on the brake, the car did not stop. We tried again without her foot on the brake, but the car still did not stop. After consulting with the dealer, we learned that the system only works when accelerating. Despite several attempts, the car did not stop, and I had to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit. I took the car back to the dealer, but they found nothing wrong with it. I then contacted Volvo Customer Service, and the representative was very helpful. She took down all the information about my car and said she would turn it over to the quality control section. I am still waiting for a response. According to the Volvo website, the Cross Traffic Alert with Auto-brake is designed to detect cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles up to 30m away, helping drivers manoeuvre safely even when vision to the rear of the car is restricted.When reversing out of a parking space, the driver is alerted by a warning sound from the left or right speakers, corresponding with the location of the hazard, and a visual warning in the centre display. This feature not only makes reversing easier and safer, but also improves safety for other road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, there are several videos available online demonstrating the Automatic Braking system stopping the car while backing up when a pedestrian is walking behind the car. It is important to note that our system works properly and we take safety very seriously at Volvo.

I recently took this car out for an hour-long test drive, right after looking at Mazda's offerings. I must say, this car looks great, and the interior is very minimalist. The little SUV drove very well, and the driving experience and power were fairly well implemented. However, there are a few drawbacks to this car. Firstly, the most irritating thing that no other reviewer mentions is the noise the HVAC system makes. From the slowest fan setting and beyond, it sounds like a server rack. Additionally, all of the HVAC controls are controlled through the in-dash screen, which can be a pain and even dangerous to change while driving. The tire noise above 50mph is worse than all other competitors, and many below its price point. Lastly, for some reason, the materials they use in the door panel cubbies feel like bargain-bin RV materials. For a $45k and up SUV, this seems like a daft choice, and will easily get stained. After reading the other reviews about electronics issues, and the overall experience during our own test drive, I don't think it makes sense to spend $40k or more when Mazda's CX-30 Turbo starts at $30k.

Drives well with nice performance, but unfortunately, it falls short of the luxury offered by competing brands. The navigation system could use some improvement, and the voice control feature often fails to recognize commands. Additionally, adjusting the AC fan can be a bit cumbersome, requiring multiple clicks and resulting in inconsistent fan strength. Despite these minor issues, the car has some great features and drives smoothly. However, these little things are adding up and may make it unlikely for me to keep the car after the lease.
