2005 Scion Xb problems
The Scion xB is a compact car (subcompact car in its first generation) made by Scion, a now-defunct fully owned division of Toyota, for the United States market. It is a box-shaped, 5-door hatchback.
First generation (XP30; 2003)
The first-generation xB was a lightly modified and rebadged version of the Japanese-market subcompact Toyota bB. It was a small hatchback based on the Toyota Echo/Yaris platform. The xB was one of two models in the lineup of Toyota's US-exclusive Scion division present at the brand's 2003 launch, the other being the xA, based on the Toyota ist. The car proved to be unexpectedly popular with senior drivers.
First-generation xB vs. first-generation bB
Only the first-generation models for both the xB and bB are related. Second-generation models are based upon different platforms.
To create the first-generation xB, the bB was modified from right- to left-hand drive, the front passenger area was also changed significantly with the bB's front bench seat replaced with bucket seats and the column-mounted shifter changed to a floor-mounted shifter.
The available drivetrains also differed. The bB was available with either the 1.3 L I4 2NZ-FE engine or the 1.5 L 1NZ-FE, mated exclusively to a 4-speed automatic transmission with available all wheel drive. The xB was only available with the 1NZ-FE that produced 108 hp (81 kW) and 105 lb⋅ft (142 N⋅m) in US spec, but offered both a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive was not offered on the xB.
The Toyota bB was equipped with a compact spare tire under the floor of the luggage area. On the Scion xB, a compact spare tire was stored under the left side of a raised rear cargo floor. Since the spare tire raised the cargo floor by several inches, a storage bin was added to the right of the spare tire to reclaim some of the lost storage space. A jack was stored under the driver's seat of the xB.
The Toyota bB had a pull-out storage tray under the passenger seat that the xB lacks.
The bB went on sale in February 2000, whereas the xB went on sale in June 2003 for the 2004 model year. Sales of the first-generation bB ended in December 2005, whereas the first-generation xB ended sales in June 2007.

Common 2005 Scion Xb problems
The 2005 Scion xB is a compact car known for its distinctive boxy design and spacious interior. While generally considered reliable, there are a few common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most frequent issues is a faulty rear hatch handle assembly, particularly in the 2005-2010 models. The plastic handle can break, making it difficult to open the rear hatch. This problem can be inconvenient and may require replacement of the handle assembly.
Another issue reported by some owners of the 2005 Scion xB is excessive oil consumption. This problem can be costly to repair and may indicate more serious engine issues. If you're considering a used Scion xB, it's essential to check its service history before making a purchase to ensure that it has been well-maintained and hasn't experienced any significant engine problems.
Additionally, some Scion xB owners have reported problems with the air conditioning not cooling effectively, particularly in the 2006 model. This issue usually requires a simple repair or recharge of the AC system.
It's worth noting that the Scion xB is generally regarded as a reliable compact car, with a simple yet sturdy design and minimal tech that mean there's less that can go wrong compared to more feature-heavy vehicles.
In general, a well-maintained Scion xB can serve as a reliable vehicle for daily commuting and city driving. However, it's essential to be aware of the common problems that have been reported by owners and to check the service history of any used Scion xB before making a purchase.

- Summary: I first reported the break, airbag, and acceleration failure on my brand new 2005 Scion XB on June 20, 2005. I only had the Daihatsu/ Toyota two week when a driver in front of me stopped short at a Yield sign forcing me to slam on my brakes. immediately heard the sound of metal snapping and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I pumped the pedal to the floor but there was no resistance. The vehicle immediately accelerated, and I struck the rear of Ford Explorer at about 30-35 miles per hour. I suffered catastrophic injuries. I filed complaints at every level of government possible, but no one would investigate my claims. My FDFS complaint dated [XXX] might be the first to accurately report and describe causation regarding of these known defects sold by Toyota/Daihatsu with willful intent to defraud the public by fraudulent concealment of these known Defective Products. Toyota/ Daihatsu's Top Brass had full knowledge of the danger they were selling to the American Public under the Toyota Brand built on Safety. In a criminal conspiracy designed to defraud the U,S. Government by importing and selling 200,000 Scion models 2003, 2004, 2005 without safety crash testing thru Project Genesis. Toyota/Daihatsu didn't just cheat on safety testing on these models they failed to perform any safety crash testing until the model change in 2006 then just included all models 2003, 2004, 2005 into the 2006 rating applying those standards to all models. THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED BY ITSELF TO 40-45 MPH. I BRAKED (FOOT BRAKE, HAND BRAKE & USING GEAR) BEFORE ALMOST HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. LUCKILY IT STOPPED WITH A LOUD BRAKING NOISE; I ENDED UP CLOSE TO THE SIDE OF THE STREET BUT STILL NOT CLEAR FROM THE TRAFFIC LANE. I TRIED TO RESTART AND MOVE OUT OF THE WAY BUT THE ACCELERATION SOUND WAS HORRIBLE AND THE GEAR WAS LOCKED UP. I OPENED THE HOOD AND CHECKED THE ACCELERATOR CABLE, FLIPPING THE SPRING LOADED CABLE BACK AND FORTH, AND IT SEEMED TO BE LOOSE ON THE CABLE SPOOL. I THEN RE-STARTED THE CAR, BUT IT WAS STILL REVVING VERY FAST, SO I TURNED IT OFF AND CONTINUED FLIPPING THE ACCELERATOR CABLE UNTIL IT APPEARED TO BE TIGHTER. WHEN I RE-STARTED IT THIS TIME IT WAS RUNNING NORMALLY AT REDUCED RPMS ABOUT 30 MINUTES AFTER THE INCIDENT. I DROVE BACK HOME SLOWLY (ONE MILE AWAY) ON THE CITY STREETS. I DROVE IT SLOWLY TO AUTO SHOP THE NEXT DAY. CHECKED BY MTZ AUTOMOTIVE IN MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA ON FRIDAY, JULY 12, 2013. THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM. BUT I AM SCARED TO DRIVE. DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. Negative 2005 Scion Xb car reviews
Positive 2005 Scion Xb car reviews

I bought my XB about one month ago. It's been great! The car has a unique design that always turns heads. While some people compare it to a Honda Element, it's really in a league of its own. The ride is smooth, the engine is efficient, and it's very comfortable overall. Plus, the gas mileage is fantastic!
-
I did not expect to buy this car; but after sitting in it and driving it, there was no turning back. It really reaches out to a younger generation with tons of standard features and still affordable. Even the options are not outrageous in price. Definitely the most fun vehicle out there.
-
I have had my xB for over 4 months and it has been an absolute blast to drive! I always receive comments on it, which is great. The only thing I don't particularly like is the windshield. If you're looking for a car that is fun to drive and gets great gas mileage, I highly recommend the Scion xB. Plus, as an owner, you become part of an elite club!
-
The Scion is a fantastic car for those who are 30 and above and love a fun and reliable car. The car is not just for Gen Y, but for anyone who wants a great car. I personally made mine more grown-up by having leather interior put in. The gas mileage is phenomenal and the car is well-appointed and not chintzy in appearance or construction. Additionally, the Scion is basically a Toyota, which means you get top-shelf reliability. For older consumers who have families and careers to attend to and have no time to play dealership games, the no-haggle pricing is a dream. I am glad I traded my old boring Volvo for this Scion. I love it!
-
I love it! I got it for my wife. We live in a major city, and I manage an exotic car dealership where I get to drive virtually everything. This was exactly what she wanted. Although I wasn't initially sold on the idea of the Scion xB, my wife convinced me otherwise. Since we've had it (about 90 days), the BMW has been parked in favor of this incredible little car (or truck, or SUV, whatever you want to call it). It's great on fuel economy, fun to drive, very refined, has excellent storage space and visibility, and is easy to park. Plus, it's cheap to insure. What more could you want out of a car? As a self-professed auto expert, I can confidently say that you cannot get more for your money than in a Scion xB.

I really appreciate this car since the first time I saw it. I managed to convince my wife to get it for our small business as a delivery vehicle. I am the only one who drives it and it gets regular service. Although it rarely gets better than 29 miles per gallon, it is still a great car. Unfortunately, we had to replace all four rims and tires for $800 due to cracks in the rims. We also lost the transmission at 89,000 miles and had to replace a small back side light for $175. Currently, the AC compressor is going out. However, overall, it has been a good car for us. Although, the Camry we used as a trade-in was more reliable.
