1998 Chevrolet Venture problems
The Chevrolet Venture is a minivan produced by General Motors for the 1997 to 2005 model years. The Chevrolet Venture, along with most of its General Motors minivan siblings, was built at GM's Doraville, Georgia, assembly plant.
Use of name
The Venture name was first used on a 1988 Chevrolet concept car, in this case a full-sized four-door sedan more aerodynamic than the 1991-1996 Chevrolet Caprice.
History
The Venture was introduced in 1996 for the 1997 model year as a replacement for the radically styled Lumina APV. In the United States, it was also sold as the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Pontiac Trans Sport, which was later renamed as the Pontiac Montana for 1999 (2000 in Canada). The Venture came in three trim levels, the base, LS, and LT. The base models of the Venture were short wheelbase models which came equipped with cloth upholstery, front bucket seats with fixed head restraints, a 2nd-row 2-passenger bench seat, and steel wheels. The LS came in both short and long wheelbases, and offered aluminum wheels, a varied seating configuration, adjustable head restraints, side airbags, power windows (optional on the base models), and a remote keyless entry system. The LT model was an upscale of the LS and was exclusively a long wheelbase model and offered a power driver seat (optional on the base and LS models), optional leather seats, a roof rack (optional on the base and LS models), and a driver side sliding door (optional on the base and LS models from 1997 to 1999). The anti-lock brakes were standard on all Ventures from 1996 to 2002, but became optional on the base models later on.
The Venture and its siblings were powered by GM's 3.4 L LA1 V6, rated at 180 hp (134 kW). After 1999, the engine was slightly redesigned to produce an extra 5 hp (4 kW), for a total of 185 hp (138 kW), and the alarm system for seatbelts, door ajar, low fuel, etc. have been changed. All Ventures used a four-speed automatic transmission. The Venture was one of the few minivans to have an 8-passenger seating configuration as an option when most minivans seated up to 7 passengers. In 2000, the driver side sliding door became standard on all trim levels, when the passenger side only sliding door models of minivans have rapidly fallen out of favor since the 1996 models of Chrysler minivans. The exterior was refreshed in 2001, a back-up alarm was added to indicate possible obstacles behind the vehicle, and all-wheel drive was introduced in 2002. Also for 2002 was a new steering wheel equivalent to the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala, replacing the steering wheel equivalent to the 1995-2001 Chevrolet Lumina. New for this generation, cabin air filters were installed, and the filters can be accessed from behind an access panel easily accessed from inside the glove compartment.
The optional 2-3-2 seating configuration was dropped in favor of the more conventional 2-2-3 and 2-3-3 seating configurations. The 2-3-3 was the standard for the Chinese-made Buick GL8, and a 10-seats arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration was used in a Chinese-made version of the Chevrolet Venture for export to the Philippines and Latin America (where it sold alongside the U.S. Venture) where 10-seaters are favored with lower taxes. Reviews and sales were generally lukewarm, especially about the relatively narrow cabin due to being designed for European roads. Models came in both short and long wheelbases, and with optional all-wheel drive. The third row bench seat was designed to fold flat (introduced for 2001 and available on LS and Warner Bros. models), but forming a higher floor unlike the Honda, Mazda and Nissan minivans that folded into a well behind the third row.
The Venture was replaced after 2005 by the Chevrolet Uplander, which was essentially a facelift with one long wheelbase configuration, and a longer nose which served chiefly to improve crush distance and styling more like an SUV. Only the long-wheelbase Venture was sold for 2005 in the US but the short-wheelbase was still offered in Canada. Production of the Chevy Venture ended on June 24, 2005.

Common 1998 Chevrolet Venture problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1998 Chevrolet Venture, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Cooling System Problems:
Complaints have surfaced regarding difficulties with the engine cooling system, particularly related to issues with the antifreeze temperature not rising when driving, only when idling. Despite changing antifreeze and the thermostat, some owners have struggled to resolve this problem.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Failure:
A prevalent issue reported by owners is the intake manifold gasket failure, especially in the 2001 Chevrolet Venture model. This problem can lead to engine performance issues and potentially costly repairs.
- General Reliability Concerns:
While some owners have praised the Chevrolet Venture for its reliability and longevity, others have highlighted various maintenance needs, such as replacing belts, AC hoses, motor mounts, door sensors, and tires. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the vehicle's performance in extreme conditions, like driving through mud, and its ability to withstand accidents, as mentioned by an owner who was hit by a school bus with minimal damage to the vehicle.
These reported problems indicate a range of issues that Chevrolet Venture owners have faced with their 1998 models, from minor inconveniences like power window switch failures to more significant concerns like engine cooling system malfunctions and intake manifold gasket failures. Addressing these issues promptly and with the help of qualified auto repair professionals can help maintain the performance and longevity of the Chevrolet Venture.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-07-28
- VIN: 1GNDX03E4WD
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: MY HEADLIGHT LENSES HAVE FALLEN OFF ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THIS IS CLEARLY A FAULTY DESIGN AS THE LENSES ARE MERELY GLUED ON THE FRONT OF THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. BECAUSE OF THE GLUE WEARING AWAY ON THE HEADLIGHT COVER, WATER GETS INTO THE ASSEMBLY AND CAUSES THE HALOGEN LIGHTS TO SHORT OUT. THIS TO ME IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. I THINK THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ADMIT TO THIS AND RECALL THE VANS AND REPLACE WITH A NEW DESIGN. WHY DOES IT ALWAYS TAKE SOMEONE'S DEATH AND A LAWSUIT TO GET SOMETHING TAKEN CARE OF. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE LIGHTS THREE TIMES. THE LAST TIME I PUT DUCT TAPE AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE LENSES TO KEEP THEM ON. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO DO THAT??? *JB

- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE AND SOME OTHER RETAINERS USED IN VEHICLES ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1996 AND OCTOBER 31, 1997, COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

We bought this car new and have never questioned our decision once. We love it in every way possible. The integrated car seats have been wonderful with our four kids. I want this to be the car my 8 year old learns to drive in! And the grill doesn't bother me at all!

Hi there! We wanted to share our experience with our beloved Venture van. We purchased it at 72,000 miles and have put another 66,000 miles on it since then. It has been a reliable companion on our many road trips across different states. Although we have decided to upgrade to an SUV, we are confident that the Venture still has plenty of life left in it and could easily go another 80,000 miles. We have only had one issue with the driver side window gear, but other than that, it has been smooth sailing. Overall, we have had a great experience with the Venture and would definitely consider buying another one in the future. Thanks for listening!

The front-wheel drive transaxle has been the biggest issue for me. Unfortunately, my first one failed at 123,000 miles and even after a NOS replacement, the transaxle still slips randomly when accelerating from a standstill. However, overall, I have no major complaints about this vehicle. It has served me well and I particularly appreciate the great gas mileage! With a 25 gallon tank, I can easily go 500 miles between refuelings. Although my Venture now has 200,000 miles on it and the engine and transmission are starting to sound a bit loose, I have enjoyed driving it and I'm considering getting another Venture for my next vehicle!

I absolutely adore my car! It feels like a part of the family to me. Although there have been a few minor issues, such as the intake gasket repair ($800) that all GM cars seem to need, the headlight covers falling off ($150), and the power sliding door requiring a few repairs ($400) before finally breaking down completely, I have only had to pay around $3500-$4000 for non-maintenance repairs over the course of 9 years. My mechanic even said that he would buy this van from me if I ever decide to sell it! I am so happy with it, and at 119,000 miles, it's still going strong. I hope to keep it for many more years to come!

I bought this vehicle brand new because my husband had a GM supplier discount. Although I would have preferred another vehicle, I am so happy that I was 'forced' to buy the Venture. After driving it for over 90,000 miles in 5 years, I have nothing significant to complain about. In contrast, my '90 Dodge Caravan caused me nothing but trouble and cost me a lot of money to replace the transmission three times! I plan to keep driving my Venture until it can no longer run!

This van has had several issues since the warranty expired at 36K miles. Despite numerous attempts to fix the problem, including replacing spark plugs, cables, oxygen sensor, and ignition control switch, the service engine light remained on for over a year. Unfortunately, the transmission has now failed at just over 73K miles. It is clear that there are quality issues with this vehicle, which is disappointing.

I really appreciate the smooth ride and how quiet it is on the road. The van has never caused me any strain and I have kept up with regular maintenance to ensure its value. The design is great and I particularly like that I have control over the door opening and closing, rather than having power doors.

This minivan was originally a demo vehicle when I purchased it, but I was the first owner. I was sold on its styling, spacious interior, and solid feel. I absolutely loved this minivan! It started every time I turned the key and was great on fuel and long trips. It was a very reliable minivan, although I did have to replace the brake pads annually. Unfortunately, after the odometer turned to 50K, the radio died and I had to replace the driver-side window regulator. Then, after the odometer turned 60K, the oil pump went and then the main bearing, which ultimately led to the motor failing. I am disappointed in the quality of the engine that GM put under the hood. It is currently dead in the driveway. I have since purchased an 06 Uplander and will be selling this one. I will not be purchasing a Chevy again.

I have noticed several issues with my Venture since purchasing it, including plastic parts falling off, power windows not working, a blown headgasket, and ultimately a blown engine with only 97,000 miles. This has been a frustrating experience, as my previous Nissans have lasted well over 180,000 miles, with one even reaching 350,000 miles. I expect a higher level of quality from American-made cars, and it is disappointing to see such a decline. I believe that car owners should be able to rely on the quality of their vehicles, and I hope to see improvements in the future.

It was my first time buying a minivan and I had a great experience. I loved the spaciousness it provided. Although, it is important to note that this minivan is best suited for a period of three years. After that, some issues may arise such as the brakes starting to squeak (which can be bothersome) and small electrical problems like power locks, radio buttons, power windows, and back windshield wiper. Additionally, the gas mileage is poor if driven daily. However, it was very reliable for the first three years and I would definitely recommend it, especially if you have kids...
