The Volvo V40 is a small family car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 2012 to 2019. It was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and was on sale in Europe between 2012 and 2019.

The V40 was designed by American Chris Benjamin, the interior is the work of Pontus Fontaeus, and was the last Volvo to be designed under Steve Mattin, before he departed the company. In some countries, the V40 T5 uses a 2.0 litre I5 (B5204T9) producing 213 hp @ 6000 rpm and 300 nm from 2,700 to 5,000 rpm.
From the model year of 2014, Volvo has begun fitting its in-house developed Drive E (VEA) diesel and petrol engines to the V40. As of January 2015, these engines are available in the new V40 D4 (replacing the previous five cylinder D4) and V40 T5 (replacing the petrol five cylinder T5). Also available is the IntelliSafe safety precrash system.
Available in both the V40 and V40 Cross Country bodies, the D4 Drive E includes a four-cylinder twin turbo diesel engine rated 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft), a six speed manual transmission tuned for improved fuel economy, pressure feedback from each fuel injector, reduced friction, and a smart valve solution on the cooling system for a more rapid heat up phase after a cold start.
The T5 Drive-E includes a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine rated 243 PS (179 kW; 240 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft), with eight speed automatic transmission.
These new engines replace the older, but identically branded, five cylinder engines. After introduction of the VEA D4 and T5, the 1.6 D2 and 2.0 five cylinder D3 are replaced with VEA 2.0 D2 and D3 engines. The 1.6 EcoBoost and 2.0 five cylinder are replaced with VEA 2.0 T2, T3, and T4 engines. For some petrol automatic models, a de stroked version of the VEA 2.0, with 1.5 litre displacement, is used for T2 and T3.

ON 6/27 I WAS TAKING MY 7 MONTH OLD BABY TO DAY CARE WHEN IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR WENT COMPLETELY DEAD WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH. I HAD A BIT OF TROUBLE RESTARTING IT - BUT IT EVENTUALLY RESTARTED. I WAS VERY NERVOUS THE REST OF THE WAY TO THE DAY CARE, BUT I MADE IT WITHOUT IT STALLING. I WAS ABLE TO LEAVE THE DAY CARE AND DECIDED TO GET TO WORK AND HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. IT STALLED AGAIN. AFTER MANY TRIES AND 30 MINUTES LATER IT STARTED AND I MADE IT TO WORK. I HAD IT TOWED TO VOLVO. THEY FOUND A POWER SUPPLY INTERRUPTION CODE -ECM30 AND REPLACED THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR. PICKED UP THE CAR LATER THAT DAY AND ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK THE CHECK ENGINE CAME ON AGAIN. AS I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY IT STARTED STALLING AGAIN. TOOK IT BACK TO VOLVO ON 6/28. THEY WORKED ON IT FOR 5 HOURS WHILE I WAITED. THEY REPLACED THE FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR, STILL HAD PROBLEMS, REPLACED THE REAR OXYGEN SENSOR, THE LIGHT STILL CAME BACK ON. REPLACED BOTH SENSORS AGAIN AND LOADED SOFTWARE. THAT SEEMED TO DO THE TRICK. I HAVEN'T HAD THAT SAME PROBLEM AGAIN SO FAR. BUT I AM NOTICING THAT MY V40 SOMETIMES SLOWS (RPMS REV UP TO AROUND 4,000) WHEN ACCELERATING. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE WHEN I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE INTO TRAFFIC, VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN. I just turned over 200,000 km's and the V40 is still performing decently. Although there have been some noticeable interior creaks and squeaks recently, the stock sound system can handle them without any issues. My V40 is like my office and it still handles great. However, I must admit that the cost of servicing this vehicle is quite high. It is definitely the most expensive car I have ever owned for regular maintenance. Just something to keep in mind.

It's common for headlights to burn out annually, and sometimes rear wheel alignment is needed to prevent tire burn. Unfortunately, the original equipment tire model wasn't stocked locally, so it had to be special ordered from TX, twice. At 25,000 miles, the turbo exhaust seal started leaking, and the leather steering wheel even melted and had to be replaced. There was also a steering wheel squeak that required the replacement of the steering rack. While brake service is frequent, this is to be expected with Volvo's. Despite these issues, it's worth noting that the dealer and factory have been fantastic in standing behind their product.

The 2001 facelifting is great for driving performance and behavior on the road, especially for 2-wheel drive vehicles with an automatic gearbox. It may not be the fastest, but it's definitely not lazy either. This makes it the perfect wagon for families or seniors.

A truly sporty little wagon. The turbo gives it the kick of a V6. Handling is superb - I can't believe it's a wagon. No wimpy alarm for this car, its high pitch definitely gets attention. The leather seats, butt warmers, and automatic climate controls are an added bonus. Great job, Volvo!

This vehicle is primarily used for highway driving. However, it has not performed well and the interior is not forgiving. Additionally, bulbs go out frequently, making it very expensive to maintain. Many other owners of this model seem to agree.

Although I have experienced some issues with this vehicle after the 5 yr/50,000 mi. warranty expired, I have taken care of them promptly. I have had to replace the O2 sensor, engine mounts, transmission, brake pad kits, fuel regulator, battery, and gaskets/seals, as well as perform constant alignments and replace the timing belt. While the cupholder, armrest, front wipers, moonroof, and passenger side mirror have also required repairs, I have been able to address these issues without significant difficulty. While this car has required more maintenance than my previous Toyota Camry, I have been able to keep it running smoothly. I believe that with proper care and attention, this car can be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle. While Volvo may have changed over the years, I still believe that it is a quality brand worth considering.

I, like many others, used to believe that Volvo is a very safe car. However, during a tune-up, the mechanic informed me that this particular Volvo model is notorious for catching on fire. The manifold is designed to sit right above the exhaust, so any drip of oil, which mine has quite a few little ones, can potentially set my car on fire! This news shocked me and filled me with intense fear. I was scared to even drive it a block! The thought of being burned alive is a paranoia I have to deal with every time I smell a strong smell of gasoline or some other burning chemical while driving. Unfortunately, finding the parts I've needed has been near impossible. My ignition coil 'connectors' were totally melted and were only sold attached to a much larger and super expensive part that I didn't even need. So, I went to Pic A Part and got them, used, off a torn-up vehicle. Additionally, my check engine light had been on for the full 4 years I've owned it. Also, the tail light housings crumbled in my hand when I went to replace the bulb. They don't sell those anywhere at all, same thing, I got them at a junkyard.

This vehicle has experienced several issues, including indicator and light failures, a.c. malfunctions, turbo failure at 30,000 miles, a useless radio, engine support collapse at 40,000 miles, and falling interior trim. However, it is important to note that these issues are not representative of all Volvo vehicles. It is recommended to thoroughly research and consider all options before making a purchase decision.

The car has been serviced four times since its purchase last year, with the most recent service taking over four weeks to complete. Unfortunately, the fit and finish of the car is lacking, and there are issues with the A/C and trim pieces that degrade quickly.
