2000 Volvo V40 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V40 is a small family car (C-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 2012 to 2019. It was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and was on sale in Europe between 2012 and 2019.

Models

V40

The V40 was designed by American Chris Benjamin, the interior is the work of Pontus Fontaeus, and was the last Volvo to be designed under Steve Mattin, before he departed the company. It is built on the Global C platform with modifications to the electric power steering, and revised spring and damper settings.

The engine lineup at launch are: two petrol engines; a 1.6 litre EcoBoost I4 producing either 150 or 180 hp, dependent on specification, and a 2.5 litre Volvo B525 I5 producing 254 hp, and two diesel engines; a 1.6 litre PSA Peugeot Citroën / Ford Duratorq engine, which produces 115 hp, whilst only emitting 94 g/km of CO2, and a 2.0 litre I5 Volvo diesel engine available in two versions, 150 hp and 177 hp. In some countries, the V40 T5 uses a 2.0 litre I5 (B5204T9) producing 213 hp @ 6000 rpm and 300 nm from 2,700 to 5,000 rpm.

From the model year of 2014, Volvo has begun fitting its in-house developed Drive E (VEA) diesel and petrol engines to the V40. As of January 2015, these engines are available in the new V40 D4 (replacing the previous five cylinder D4) and V40 T5 (replacing the petrol five cylinder T5). Also available is the IntelliSafe safety precrash system.

Available in both the V40 and V40 Cross Country bodies, the D4 Drive E includes a four-cylinder twin turbo diesel engine rated 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft), a six speed manual transmission tuned for improved fuel economy, pressure feedback from each fuel injector, reduced friction, and a smart valve solution on the cooling system for a more rapid heat up phase after a cold start.

The T5 Drive-E includes a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine rated 243 PS (179 kW; 240 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft), with eight speed automatic transmission.

These new engines replace the older, but identically branded, five cylinder engines. After introduction of the VEA D4 and T5, the 1.6 D2 and 2.0 five cylinder D3 are replaced with VEA 2.0 D2 and D3 engines. The 1.6 EcoBoost and 2.0 five cylinder are replaced with VEA 2.0 T2, T3, and T4 engines. For some petrol automatic models, a de stroked version of the VEA 2.0, with 1.5 litre displacement, is used for T2 and T3.

Common 2000 Volvo V40 problems

The Volvo V40 2000 is known for its reliability and quality, but like any other vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Oil Leak From Turbo Return Pipe Seal: This problem has been reported by 16 owners. The turbo return pipe seal can leak oil, which may lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Loose Airbag Mounting: Some owners have reported a loose airbag mounting caused by a defect in the horn operating mechanism. This issue can be resolved by replacing the airbag mounting plate.
  • Poor Engine Idling: Carbon build-up in the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, ICV (Idle Control Valve), and throttle body can cause poor engine idling. Regular cleaning of these parts can help resolve this issue.
  • Water Leak in Boot: The boot seals in the V40 are prone to leaking, particularly in the spare wheel well. Removing the black boot seal and applying sealer can help fix this problem.
  • Poor Performance: The EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve can get blocked, leading to poor acceleration, lack of power, and idling issues. Cleaning the EGR valve with carb cleaner can help resolve this issue.
  • Unusual Smell (2.0-ltr Models): Some owners have reported an unusual smell inside the car, accompanied by occasional hesitation during acceleration and an engine warning light. This issue may be caused by a significant problem that requires immediate attention from a Volvo dealer, as it could potentially lead to an engine fire.
  • Faulty Locking Mechanism: The remote lock and manual lock may not work correctly, requiring replacement of the locking mechanism. This is a commonly reported problem with the V40.
  • Cracked Fuel Hose: If your V40 was built between April 2015 and March 2016, a cracked fuel hose may be the cause of excessive fuel consumption and small puddles of fuel on the road. Replacing the fuel hose can help resolve this issue.
  • Corrosion in Brake Pipes: Check the metal brake pipes running from the engine bay and all the way under the car for signs of corrosion. This is particularly important for models built between 1996 and 2004.
  • Worn-Out Front Engine Mount: Some 2000-2008 S40s may experience excessive vibration at idle due to a worn-out front engine mount. Replacing the engine mount can help resolve this issue.

While these problems have been reported by some Volvo V40 2000 owners, it is essential to note that many owners have had positive experiences with the car, praising its reliability, luxury, and safety features. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-06-29
  • VIN: YV1VW2554YF
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: 2000 VOLVO V40 - VERY WELL MAINTAINED, 2ND OWNER, APPROXIMATELY 83,000 MILES. I STARTED NOTICING THAT THE CAR WOULD SURGE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH THE A/C ON AND WHEN I HAD STEADY PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR (I.E. ICRUISING AT A STEADY SPEED). THE SURGE IN RPM'S WOULD BE RHYTHMIC, VERY SUBTLE (100-200 RPMS) AND CONTINUE INDEFINITELY UNTIL I TURN THE A/C OFF - AT WHICH TIME THEY WOULD CEASE. THEY WOULD SOMETIMES RESUME WHEN I TURNED THE A/C COMPRESSOR BACK ON. THIS HAPPENED INFREQUENTLY OVER THE PAST MONTH (IT'S JUNE IN CT, MY STATE OF RESIDENCE) AND WOULD NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME I RAN THE A/C - BUT ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE A/C COMPRESSOR WAS RUNNING. THEN A REMARKABLE THING HAPPENED TODAY - WHILE CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITH THE A/C COMPRESSOR ON - THE CARE SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY SURGED IN A WAY THAT IT HAD NEVER DONE PREVIOUSLY. THE INCREASE IN RPM'S WAS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO DOWNSHIFT INTO THE NEXT LOWEST GEAR. FORTUNATELY, I HAD ENOUGH SPACE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME TO ALLOW ME TIME TO RESPOND WITHOUT HAVING AND ACCIDENT. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE RPM'S STARTED SPIKING TO ALMOST 4,000 THEN QUICKLY BACK DOWN TO 1,000. THE RPM'S CONTINUED TO THIS RAPID BACK AND FORTH SPIKING AND DIPPING FOR ALMOST 30 SECONDS. I TURNED OFF THE A/C/ BUT THAT DIDN'T HAVE AN IMMEDIATE AFFECT (AS WAS THE CASE IN THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED EPISODES WHEN THE SPIKES AND DIPS WERE MUCH MORE SUBTLE). WHEN TURNING OFF THE A/C DIDN'T DO THE TRICK ((AS IT HAD IN THE PAST) I THEN IMMEDIATELY CHECKED THE CRUISE CONTROL - IT WAS OFF. I THEN STABBED AT THE ACCELERATOR WITH MY FOOT SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT FINALLY SETTLED DOWN. AND I HAVE THE FACTORY VOLVO RUBBER MATS THAT ARE SECURED TO THE FLOOR BY A POSITIONING PIN (I'M METICULOUS ABOUT MY CAR THE MAT WAS NO WHERE NEAR THE ACCELERATOR). I AM NATURALLY VERY WARY OF THIS CAR NOW, ESPECIALLY AFTER READING THE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FOR THIS MODEL. WHY NO RECALL? *TR

INSTEAD RPMS INCREASED EVEN HIGHER TO OVER 5500 RPMS. TURNED THE CAR OFF. TRIED TO RESTART CAR AND RPMS IMMEDIATELY WENT HIGH AGAIN. TURNED THE CAR OFF A SECOND TIME. COULD NOT RESTART THE CAR. A SIMILAR INCIDENT HAPPENED 36 HOURS LATER AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN AT THE REPAIR SHIP. THAT INCIDENT HAPPENED AFTER DRIVING AROUND A PARKING LOT LOOKING FOR A SPACE. RPM'S INCREASED. WHEN PUT IN PARK THE RPM'S INCREASED TO OVER 4000 RPMS. CAR TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-07-19
  • VIN: YV1VW2554YF
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: ON JULY 19,2008, OUR 2000 VOLVO V40 LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH ON US 29 IN VIRGINIA. THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING, BUT IT DID NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR. WE WERE ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OFF THE ROAD, AND HAVE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC. WE WERE TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS A SENSOR FAILURE. ACCORDING TO OUR SERVICE RECORDS, THE BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR AND CAMSHAFT RESET VALVE WAS REPLACED. THREE DAYS LATER, ON JULY 26, 2008, THE SAME THING HAPPENED - THIS TIME IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION. AGAIN, FORTUNATELY, THE CAR REMAINED RUNNING AND SEEMED TO LIMP ALONG TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC. AGAIN, THE CAR WAS TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC, WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. A LITTLE INTERNET SEARCH ON OUR PART UNCOVERED A SERIES OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE PROBLEM - AN ETM FAILURE. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF WORKING WITH OUR MECHANIC TO GET THIS FIXED. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-03-18
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED OUR 2000 V40 FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AT 81K. WE NEEDED BOTH REAR SPRINGS REPLACED RIGHT AWAY. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THEY WERE REPLACED. DEALER SAID A COMMON FLAW WITH THE V40. WE ARE ALSO NOTICING A SHAKING IN THE FRONT END WHEN ACCELERATING BETWEEN 50-60MPH. NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS. ALSO NOTICING THAT THERE IS A SHAKE IN THE BRAKE PEDAL AND TOLD NEED NEW BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. THEY WERE JUST REPLACED BEFORE WE GOT THE CAR AT 75K AND NOW CAR HAS 100K WHICH IS A ALL HIGHWAY MILES. WE HAVE ALSO NOTICED DIFFICULTY WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM, SOMETIMES TROUBLE STOPPING AND BRAKES SQUEAL AFTER SITTING FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. HEAD LIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS ALSO HAVE BURNT OUT QUITE FREQUENTLY. THERE ALSO SEEMS TO BE SOME MAJOR DEFECT WITH THE EXTERIOR PAINT. RUSTING IN MANY PLACES AND PAINT SEEMS TO BE RUBBING OFF AT THE TOUCH. LUCKILY NONE OF THESE HAVE CAUSED ANY ACCIDENTS OR CLOSE CALLS, HOWEVER NOT VERY SATISFIED WITH THIS VOLVO. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-12-09
  • VIN: YV1VW2552YF
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: UPON RETURNING TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE THIRD TIME FOR A COMPLAINT ABOUT A SUSPICIOUS SOUNDING THUMP OR CLUNK IN THE PASSENGER-SIDE REAR OF OUR 2000 VOLVO V40, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT BOTH COIL SPRINGS HAD BROKEN. THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF REPAIR HAS 50,080 MILES ON IT; WHEN THE NOISE WAS FIRST REPORTED TO THE DEALER ON 12/09/04 THE CAR HAD 37,448 MILES. BOTH SPRINGS BROKE IDENTICALLY AT THE FIRST COIL WHERE THEY SIT IN THE BASE PLATE OF THE STRUT ASSEMBLY. BOTH FRACTURES ARE A SPIRAL CUT THROUGH THE COILS WIRE, LIKE A FATIGUE OR STRESS FRACTURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE COILS AT MY EXPENSE WHICH INCLUDED THE EXTRA COST OF REPLACING BOTH CONTROL ARMS AND STRUT ASSEMBLIES BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTIES THEY HAD REMOVING THE BOLTS DUE TO CORROSION ($1103). AFTER MY COMPLAINT, THEY OFFERED TO COVER THE COST OF THE SPRINGS ONLY ($200) WHICH ALLOWED THEM TO KEEP THE SPRINGS. I PERSUADED THE SERVICE ADVISOR TO ALLOW ME TO HAVE ONE PIECE OF THE SPRING FOR EVIDENCE. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS EXACT FAILURE IN THEIR VEHICLES SUSPENSION. I BELIEVE VOLVO HAS AN ENGINEERING FLAW IN THE TEMPERED STEEL COIL SPRINGS. *JB

Negative 2000 Volvo V40 car reviews

  1. Jaylan Rodriguez 2024-07-13

This vehicle has experienced several issues, including indicator and light failures, a.c. malfunctions, turbo failure at 30,000 miles, a useless radio, engine support collapse at 40,000 miles, and falling interior trim. However, it is important to note that these issues are not representative of all Volvo vehicles. It is recommended to thoroughly research and consider all options before making a purchase decision.

  2. Macey Bernier 2024-02-15

The brakes have been done four times now, but unfortunately the brake warning light is on again. It seems like the headlight bulbs will need replacing every 12 months, with each side burning out exactly 30 days apart. Additionally, there is excessive motormount vibration at idle/stop and the turbo gasket is leaking. The finish is also wearing off the steering wheel. Despite these issues, the car drives well and is fuel efficient on the highway, although not as much in town. The brakes and tires have been a bit disappointing and the car feels a bit small inside. While the price for a Volvo was attractive, the downtime for repairs has been unacceptable. I think I'll go back to Lexus for my next car.

Positive 2000 Volvo V40 car reviews

  1. Jerrod Stamm 2025-01-08

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with this car. I must say, I feel very safe and comfortable while driving it. However, my kids in the back seat do complain a bit. Additionally, I find the driver cup holder placement to be a bit awkward. On the other hand, the booster seats are a nice touch, but I do wish there was more head support for when the kids fall asleep. While I did have to replace the rear wiper multiple times, the leather has held up nicely. Unfortunately, I did have a problem with the lights on the control panel, which ended up being quite expensive to fix. Despite these minor issues, I will be sad to part with this car.

  2. Jason Ortiz 2025-01-05

Hi there! I just wanted to share how much I love my wagon, even though I might have to replace it soon. I've driven it for over 208,000 miles and have had a few minor crashes, but thankfully I've never been injured. Even after being rear-ended three times, I felt perfectly fine the next day! It's been a reliable car with great gas mileage, and I'm so grateful for all the memories it's helped me create.

  3. Giovanny Klocko 2024-09-03

Our v40 now has 65,000 miles on it. The headlights do burn out about once a year as they are always running, but that's a small price to pay for the increased safety. The car is really fun to drive, quite fast, has TONS of room and is built like a tank. If safety is a concern, this is definitely a great car!

  4. Alf Windler 2024-08-12

This wagon is absolutely stunning! I wish Volvo could make their larger models look just as good. We chose this wagon primarily for its safety features, including side air bags and head protection air bags. The built-in booster seats are a great touch and show that Volvo really cares about the safety of children. The fit and finish of this car is truly top-notch. I had the pleasure of driving it across the country and it was a joy to ride in. The front seat fit me perfectly and the turbo engine performed flawlessly, even at high altitudes!

A truly sporty little wagon. The turbo gives it the kick of a V6. Handling is superb - I can't believe it's a wagon. No wimpy alarm for this car, its high pitch definitely gets attention. The leather seats, butt warmers, and automatic climate controls are an added bonus. Great job, Volvo!
