mercedes-benz logo

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.

In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.

First generation (1995–2006, T1N)

Europe

The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.

The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2020 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 3500 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 2020, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Faulty DEF Heater: Owners have experienced issues with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) heater in the 2020 model and newer Sprinters. The faulty DEF heater can lead to the engine light coming on, particularly in colder climates, potentially causing an active start countdown.
  2. Broken Exhaust Flex Pipe: A common problem in the 2007 or the 906 chassis with the V6 OM642 diesel engine is the broken exhaust flex pipe. This issue can lead to leaks from the exhaust, which may melt nearby wiring, causing the engine to shut off and not restart.
  3. No Start Count Down Dep-Counter: In 2010 and newer models of the Sprinter with Bluetec, a countdown may start if there are issues with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) level or related components. It is crucial to diagnose the van before the countdown reaches the last few remaining start cycles.
  4. Clogged DPF: The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in the Sprinter can get clogged, especially if the ash builds up inside due to using the wrong engine oil. This can lead to exhaust flow restrictions and power loss in the van.
  5. Issues Preventing DPF Regeneration: Various issues like a faulty temperature sensor, swirl flap motor, or EGR valve can prevent the DPF from regenerating properly. If not corrected, these issues can severely restrict the exhaust and lead to power loss.
  6. Reduced Power / Limp Mode: The Sprinter has a Limp Mode as a safety feature to protect the engine from damage. It can be activated if the engine is pushed too hard, leading to reduced power to prevent further damage to components.
  7. Oil Cooler Leaks: Common on models with the OM642 engine, oil cooler leaks can occur. Repairing these leaks can be expensive and challenging due to the need to remove other parts like the turbocharger and intake manifold.
  8. Glow Plug Problems: Glow plugs and modules in the Sprinter may fail over time, with the potential for plugs breaking off in the cylinder head. Special tools may be required to extract and replace these plugs.
  9. Injector Issue or Black Death: Referred to as "Black Death," this problem involves the deterioration of copper seal rings in the injectors, leading to leaks and the accumulation of black tar and coal-like material over the fuel injectors.

These common problems reported by owners of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 2020 highlight various issues that can affect the performance and reliability of this vehicle.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-10
  • VIN: W1X8E33YXLN
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Mercedes Benz 3500 XL Sprinter motorhome, 2020 chassis. May 2023 MB did several recalls & software updates which MB USA headquarters said those changes could've affected the Cruise Control & Adaptive Cruise Control because these systems worked excellently until May '23, in my local MB Sprinter service. These systems have not worked more than 2% of the time. MB keeps changing items with no improvement. I told them to test on I-95 or The turnpike, as that's when we use it safely. Service tech said they're not allowed to test it there; we told them that's when it won't work, when we need it. Dozens of trips keep proving MB needs a permanent fix for the safety features we paid & need. I KEEP TRYING TO ADD MY 10 SECOND VIDEO CLIP BELOW BUT YOUR SITE WON'T TAKE IT. IT SHOWS the Cruise Control 3 blinking BLANK cursors on dash monitor where the mph Cruise miles #s setting should display. I showed this to my local MB service who sent video to MB USA HEADQUARTERS. Under my active Warranty they need to CHANGE the WHOLE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM. THESE bandaids are exhausting time & resources for all of us. Now their engineers say it could be the seat sensor. I've hamstring pain & need a seat cushion while driving. This EXCUSE is FAULTY like their FAULT CODES, as randomly I don't use my seat cushion & Cruise Control & thus Adaptive Cruise Control won't work. Thank you for your help! AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-08
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: W1X8E33Y3LN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The above are wouldn't allow me to place a check mark in the appropriate boxes. In the Standard Vehicle Components and ADAS sections, I was unable to check the boxes, but our vehicle contains ALL of the items in the first and second sections. The vehicle was dropped off at Lazy Days, Tampa on October 21, 2022 and so far they have been unable to provide an estimate or advise when we may receive our repaired motorhome. This dealer has a reputation for very poor follow-up. If you provide an email, I can send you the items to be checked. Despite going through two highway barriers at about 40 to 50 mph, the air bag system failed to deploy. The vehicle stopped as we ran into a fence at an angle of ten to fifteen percent. We luckily dodged five opportunities to be killed. My wife jumped out of the vehicle when it stopped and screamed so loud I could not believe it was her. I've been married 28 years and was shocked at her condition. I had to hold her to quiet her. The first hint of a problem was the brakes failed and the cruise control seemed to increase speed, but I'm not absolutely sure of this, but it felt like it. There are two Tiffin reps at Lazy Days, which I wrote about this, twice, and called leaving a message and they have not sought to get in touch with me. The supervisor, [XXX], of the intake service advisor, [XXX] said she would be in touch. I told her there was so much wrong, we understand if it took longer than her usual case. When it was about a month in, I called and discovered he no longer works there. They failed to assign someone to let us know of any progress. I called and left messages for [XXX] (Lazy Days employee) and wrote two emails and he also failed to get in touch, but he assigned [XXX] who called us asking what was wrong with our coach. I was beside myself. [XXX] failed to even read the invoice! I told her to read the invoice and call us back. Ran out of room.
