1999 Mitsubishi Diamante problems
The Mitsubishi Diamante is an automobile that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1990 to 2005.
The first series was a hardtop introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989. It went on sale in Japan exclusively in May 1990 and won that year's Japan Car of the Year award. It was created by splicing an extra 6.6 cm (2.6 in) right down the middle of the Mitsubishi Galant, which itself had won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1987. The Diamante's platform was also used for the sporty Mitsubishi 3000GT.
The name Diamante was derived from the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian word for "diamond" and was adopted also as homage to the Mitsubishi badge which is composed of three diamonds. In Japan, this vehicle was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Common 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante problems
The 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante, while a reliable vehicle overall, is known to have some common problems that owners have reported. These issues primarily revolve around the engine, transmission, and fuel efficiency.
- Transmission Issues: The Diamante's INVECS automatic transmission has been reported to have issues, particularly with the transmission slipping or failing to shift gears smoothly. This can lead to a loss of power and decreased drivability. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced, which can be a costly repair. It is recommended to have the transmission inspected regularly and to address any issues promptly.
- Fuel Efficiency: The 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante's 6G74 engine is known for its power, but it is not particularly fuel-efficient. The car's fuel efficiency is lower than many other vehicles in its class, which can lead to increased fuel costs over time. It is recommended to consider this when purchasing a Diamante and to budget accordingly.
- Service Intervals: The 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante's 6G74 engine requires regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer's recommended service intervals closely and to address any issues promptly. This can help to prevent more serious problems from developing and can help to extend the life of the engine.
- Transmission Upgrades: The Diamante's automatic transmission is not the only option. Some owners have successfully upgraded to a manual transmission, which can offer improved performance and drivability. However, this is a complex and costly modification, and it is recommended to consult with a professional before attempting it.
In summary, the 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante is a reliable vehicle, but it is known to have some common problems. These include excessive oil consumption, transmission issues, lower fuel efficiency, and the need for regular maintenance. By being aware of these issues and addressing them promptly, owners can help to ensure that their Diamante remains a reliable and enjoyable vehicle for years to come.
Why did Mitsubishi discontinue the Diamante?
The Diamante was a popular car among buyers who were looking for a comfortable and stylish luxury sedan. It was not as popular as some rivals, such as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, but it was a good value for money car. The Diamante was discontinued in 2005 due to declining sales.
What engine is in a Mitsubishi Diamante?
The Diamante was marginally larger with improved headroom. It was powered by several engines: the base engine was a 2.5-liter MVV (lean burn) V6, followed by a number of 2.5 and 3.5-liter variants, the 2.5-liter engine sported 175 hp and the 3.5-liter engine boasted 210 hp (160 kW).

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: I OWN A 1999 MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE WITH 87K MILES ON THE ODOMETER. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE LAST WEEK AND NOTICED THAT THE WINDOWS OF THE CAR STARTED TO FOG UP. THE FOGGING BECAME SO THICK THAT SHE HAD TO PULL OVER (BLINDLY) AND FRANTICALLY WIPE THE WINDOW CLEAN IN ORDER TO SEE OUT OF THE CAR. SHE HAD TO CANCEL HER TRIP SHORT BECAUSE THE PROBLEM KEPT RECURRING THE CAR ALSO STARTED TO SMELL LIKE ANTI-FREEZE, WHICH, ACCORDING TO MY WIFE, CONTINUED TO GET STRONGER AS SHE DROVE IT HOME. I CALLED THE LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD BY THE PERSON IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS CAR AND THAT BY NOT REPAIRING IT IMMEDIATELY IT CAN CAUSE THE ECU TO FAIL (THE CAR COMPUTER) WHICH COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL IF THIS OCCURS AT SPEED. MITSUBISHI IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAS NOT TAKEN ACTION TO ISSUE A RECALL OF THE DEFECTIVE PART (THE GASKETS THAT ATTACH THE HEATER CORE TO THE COOLING SYSTEM). I AM LOGGING THIS COMPLAINT ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE COME ACROSS A SITE ON THE INTERNET WHERE OWNERS OF THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE (BUT DIFFERENT YEARS) ARE DETAILING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR CARS. *JB

AFTER A FEW WEEKS I REALIZED THERE WAS COOLANT ACCUMULATING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOORWELL. MY VEHICLE IS AT 53,500 MILES AND WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER AS HAVING A "HEATER CORE FAILURE." THE ESTIMATE THEY GAVE IS $1,300 TO REPAIR. I CANNOT AFFORD IT SO IT LOOKS LIKE MY VEHICLE WILL BE GARAGED UNTIL A RECALL IS ISSUED. *AK
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-03-09
- VIN: 6MMAP37P8XT
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: I'M EXPERIENCING A SYRUPY SMELL INSIDE THE CAR WHEN THE HEAT IS ON. PER THE VARIOUS RESEARCH I HAVE PERFORMED, THIS IS A SIGN OF A FAILING HEATER CORE. THIS IS A KNOWN FAILURE BY MITS PER TSB 627114 THAT WAS ISSUED. ADDITIONALLY, ON >2000 MODEL YEAR DIAMANTES, MITS BEGAN PUTTING THE VEHICLE?S COMPUTER (ECU) IN A PLASTIC BAG SO THAT WHEN THE HEATER CORE DOES FAIL, IT DOES NOT RUIN THE ECU AND CREATE ADDITIONAL SAFETY RISKS. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER SIGN THAT MITS IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND RATHER THAN DESIGNING OUT THE PROBLEM, THEY PUT A BANDAGE OVER A POTENTIAL EFFECTED AREA. UNFORTUNATELY MY VEHICLE IS 1999 WHICH DOES NOT HAVE THE PLASTIC BAG AND THUS I AM EXPOSED TO THE ADDITIONAL RISKS. THE ESTIMATE I RECEIVED TO FIX THIS WAS $1100. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO ASCERTAIN THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN DIAMANTES AND MITS SHOULD BE AWARE OF 3 MAIN RISKS: (1) THE DEFECT EXPOSES CUSTOMERS TO AN UNACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF TOXIC ETHYLENE GLYCOL WHICH SHOULD NOT EXCEED 10-25PPM LEVELS (2) THE HEATER CORE FAILING COULD RESULT IN COOLANT LEAKING ONTO THE VEHICLE?S ECU WHICH COULD RESULT IN UNEXPECTED FAILURE WHICH POSES ADDITIONAL HAZARDS. (3) FAULTY HEATER CORE MAKES THE VISIBILITY DIFFICULT DUE TO FOGGING OF WINDSHIELD THUS PUTTING THE DRIVER AT GREATER RISK. AS A PRODUCT SAFETY ENGINEER, I AM VERY DISTURBED THAT ALL THE COMPLAINTS ALREADY FILED AND THE ASSOCIATED RISK HAS NOT RESULTED IN ANY ACTION. I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE THE NHTSA TO TAKE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES IN WORKING WITH MITS TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM RATHER THAN WAIT FOR AN INJURY OR DEATH TO OCCUR AS A RESULT OF A POORLY ENGINEERED HEATER CORE DESIGN.*AK

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-05-20
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY PAINT STARTED TO BUBBLE UP ON MY 1999 DIAMANTE A FEW MONTHS BACK. THIS BUBBLE IS AT EDGE OF TOP WINDSHIELD MOLDING. I WAS ORIGINALLY TOLD THAT MANUFACTURE WARRANTY WILL COVER IT BUT FEW MEANINGLESS VISITS TO THIS DEALERSHIP AND THEIR CONTRACTED BODY SHOP DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER DECLINED THE CLAIM STATING THAT BUBBLE IS CAUSED BY CORROSION INITIALLY STARTED BY ROCK CHIP ON THE PAINT. THIS IS WITHOUT ANY PROFESSIONAL OPINION, THERE IS NO TRACE OF CHIP AT BUBBLING SPOT AND I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THIS CORROSION STARTED FROM UNDERNEATH PAINT. DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER DID POINT OUT SOME CHIPS ON HOOD, WINDSHIELD AND ROOF PANEL OF THE CAR BUT THEY LOOK NOTHING LIKE THE BUBBLE. THE GUY FROM BODY SHOP TOLD ME THAT HE WILL RECOMMEND FOR WARRANTY REPAIR ON MY CLAIM BUT DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER DIDN'T CARE FOR IT. I WAS CALLED IN TO LET THEM SEE THE CAR 4 TIMES FOR NOTHING, THIS DEALERSHIP IS NOT SO CLOSE BY WHERE I LIVE OR WORK. I REQUESTED THEM TO PROVE THAT ROCK CHIP CAUSED THE BUBBLE BUT THEY JUST SAID NO, THERE IS NO SIGN OF CHIP ANYWHERE NEAR THIS BUBBLE. I'D LIKE TO HAVE THEM FURTHER INVESTIGATE THIS CLAIM. THEY ALSO DAMAGED MY UPPER WINDSHIELD MOLDING TO LOOK UNDERNEATH IT, THEY DON'T MENTION NOTHING OF IT EITHER. I HEARD MITSUBISHI HAS BAD SERVICE BUT DIDN'T THINK I'D HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE MY SELF.*AK

I REPEATED THE EXERCISE AND NOTICED THE VEHICLE HAD A TENDENCY TO ENTER INTO A PRONOUNCED OSCILLATION ANY TIME A TURN WAS ATTEMPTED AT CRUISE SPEED. WE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND POINTED OUT WHAT I CONSIDERED TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE TO THE SALESMAN ([XXX] . I LATER WROTE AN EMAIL TO [XXX] AT THE VILLAGE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP WHO ORIGINALLY ADVERTISED THE CAR IN TRADERONLINE. I HAVE YET TO GET A RESPONSE STATING THEY LOOKED INTO THE ISSUE. WHILE BOTHERSOME AND A DEAL KILLER FOR US, I FEEL THIS ISSUE WOULD BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM FOR INEXPERIENCE DRIVERS IN LESS THAN IDEAL ROAD CONDITIONS. Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my LS. I bought it back in 2003 for 12,500 and I have to say, it's been a great investment. I've never had any issues with it and it's definitely faster than the Altima and Camry. Plus, the leather and wood interior is just beautiful. On the highway, I get an impressive 30 mpg. Thanks for listening!
-
Overall, I had a great experience. The dealers were exceptional. Although there was a minor issue with the leather seats, it was easily fixed. The ride is nice and the car is comfortable, handling great. I would definitely consider getting another one. It's worth noting that the resale value tends to decrease quickly.

We bought our ES with 49K. My wife usually drives it. Both our sons and I really enjoy the acceleration of this car. The powertrain is awesome. I think that the Diamante is a great car too. Their value does plummet, so it's best to buy while still under factory warranty, and let someone else take the hit on the depreciation. I also own a Diamante Wagon with nearly 300k. In my opinion, these cars are very well made.

This is the best car you've ever owned!

I bought this car used and have been driving it ever since. It's got style and finesse that can hang with the big boys, but it won't break the bank. I was surprised by how fun it is to drive and how reliable it has been. Overall, it's been a great buy!

I've had a lot of fun driving this car for the first 15K miles, but unfortunately, it has been in the shop for 19 different problems. After the warranty expired, the costs of keeping it running have been quite high. In the last few months, I've spent about $500/mo on repairs and maintenance. As much as I like my Mitsu, I think it's time to trade it in for a new car. It's a shame because the car only has 50K miles and looks great. I've maintained it well and did all the required services, but I just can't keep up with the costs of repairs. The biggest problems I've had are with the ABS brakes, AC system, and suspension. I've had three Mitsubishis since 1989 and while I've had my share of problems, this time I think it's time to move on from the brand.

This has been an excellent, near-luxury car. I was initially worried about Mitsubishi's quality control, but this car has proven to be solid, well-built, and reliable. While I do wish there were some additional near-luxury touches, such as dual sun visors and low fluid warnings, overall I have been very satisfied with this vehicle. Additionally, I have received compliments on its appearance, with some mistaking it for a BMW 5-series or Lincoln LS. However, I do think that the 2003+ models could use some improvement in terms of their design. Best regards, DLD
