2004 Volkswagen Touareg problems
The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: ) is a car produced by German automaker Volkswagen Group since 2002 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. Considered to be the first luxury mid-size SUV from Volkswagen, the vehicle was named after the nomadic Tuareg people, inhabitants of the Saharan interior in North Africa. Originally, the Touareg was developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, and as of October 2020, the Touareg was developed together with the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. This family of vehicles are all unibody SUVs with independent suspension. The first generation (2002–2010) offered five, six, eight, ten and twelve-cylinder engine choices.
Development
The Volkswagen Touareg (internally designated Typ 7L) was developed as a joint venture project by Porsche and the Volkswagen Group, involving the Audi and Volkswagen brands. During the initial development phase of the Typ 7L and the early years of its production, Porsche operated as an independent entity, not affiliated with the Volkswagen Group. The sports car market is known for its fluctuations. In response to these market conditions, Porsche's CEO at the time, Wendelin Wiedeking, sought to diversify the company's product range. This strategy included the introduction of Porsche's first four-door vehicle. A team in Weissach, Germany, of over 300, led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, developed the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Now it is shared between the Touareg, the Audi Q7, and the Porsche Cayenne. However, there are styling, equipment, performance, and technical differences between them. The Touareg and Cayenne both seat five, while the Q7's stretched wheelbase accommodates a third row for seven passengers.
The Volkswagen Touareg is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is assembled by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany, at a facility built for Cayenne production.
Due to the demand and the exchange rates of euros against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the US, the V6 and V8 engine variants make up most of Volkswagen's American Touareg offering. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US, which are aimed at the mass market, Touaregs came in more upscale trims and competed with other luxury crossover SUVs.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- VIN: WVGCM77L04D
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Hello: this is the 2nd VW TOUAREG this year to repair so far, this one is a 2004 model that I have had to replace complete left & right xenon headlamp assembly Very pricy. Wiring insulation turns brittle, cracks & falls off inside the headlamp assembly, This allows the bare wires to touch & short causing fuses to blow shutting off headlamps while driving at night. This I think should be recalled, I have fixed 5 of these TOUAREGs in 4 years for this same problem. THANK YOU 10/24/24
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
- Fire: 1
- VIN: WVGEM67L24D
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: My SUV was sitting for a few days at the airport and I when I got in the car, it started fine but the headlights, interior lights, power folding mirrors and the voltmeter were not working. I had to leave the car there since it was night time. The next day I drove it home in daylight and started checking fuses. I noticed two fuses (#2, #12) on the driver side fuse panel were failed. I replaced the #2, 5 amp, fuse and no changes were noticed. Then I replaced the #12, 25 amp, fuse and I heard a number of systems clicking and powering on; the lights flickered. Then I smelled burning and saw a puff of smoke come from under the dash. I immediately pulled the fuse . After troubleshooting, I found the body control module 7L6-937-049-K had caught fire internally and started to burn through the casing. Had I not pulled the fuse and disconnected the battery, this could have been catastrophic. Once I smelled the smoke, I realized it was like the acrid smell in the suv the night before. The fact the fuse blew the previous day saved the vehicle. It was parked on the fourth floor of parking garage at the airport so many vehicles could have been damaged and people endangered had it caught fire. Not to mention the disruption at an airport. There were no warning lamps. The only indication of a problem was the inoperable systems I mentioned. Also thinking back, the slight acrid smell was present the day I arrived at the airport, I had mistaken it for plane exhaust and car exhaust smells in the garage. The vehicle has not been inspected by any dealer, manufacturer or govermental agency. I have contacted the manufacturer for guidance and help with repairing. I am awaiting a response.

THIS IS DUE TO THE PLASTIC HOUSING ON THE FUEL PUMP THAT HAS DEVELOPED A CRACK, AND IS LEAKING GASOLINE. THIS IS SIMILAR TO ANOTHER RECALL, 17V583000, WHICH IS FOR THE FUEL FILTER FLANGE, BUT VW IS SAYING THEY WILL NOT COVER IT UNDER THAT BECAUSE THIS IS THE HOUSING, NOT THE FLANGE. BUT IT'S THE SAME RESULT...

AFTER INSPECTION BY MYSELF, GAS STATION ATTENDANTS, TIRE SHOP COMPANIES, AND VW DEALERSHIPS, I FINALLY GAVE UP. IN THE BEGINNING, THE DEALERSHIP ( WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR) WOULD NOT OFFICIALLY ADMIT TO THE PROBLEM, BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS, IN A VERY INFORMAL WAY, THEY CLAIMED THE THIS TECHNOLOGY WAS BRAND NEW AND THAT IT HAS ITS FLAWS! THAT I SHOULD NOT TAKE THOSE WARNINGS TOO SERIOUSLY. UNAWARE OF ANY RECALLS, I GAVE UP ON THIS TOPIC. NOW, I JUST WANT TO BE ON THE RECORD!

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, IN MARCH OF 2018, STATING THAT THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL 20AI-FUEL PUMP FLANGE FOR MY MAKE AND MODEL OF VEHICLE. I HAD ALREADY HAD THAT REPAIR DONE, DUE TO A SEVERE LEAK IN MY FUEL PUMP (GAS WAS POURING OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE AS AS FAST AS I WAS PUMPING THE GAS IN ON ONE OCCASION). I HAD TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY AND COULDN'T DRIVE IT UNTIL IT WAS REPAIRED. THEN, 3 YEARS LATER, I RECIEVED A RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM VOLKSWAGEN FOR THE EXACT REPAIR THAT I HAD DONE FOR THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP FLANGE. I COMPLETED THE REIMBURSEMENT FORM AND SUBMITTED IT TO VOLKSWAGEN. MY REIMBURSEMENT WAS REJECTED BECAUSE MY REPAIR WAS MADE PRIOR TO THE RECALL BEING ISSUED. I WAS TOLD BY VOLKSWAGEN REPRESENTATIVES THAT THE NHTSA LIMITS RECALL REPAIRS AND REIMBURSEMENTS, AND IT'S THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE NHTSA BECAUSE THEY SET THE TIMELINE.

MY HUSBAND TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO START AND MOVE THE CAR, BUT TO NO AVAIL.THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED (AT OUR EXPENSE) TO OUR LOCAL GAS STATION.THE GAS STATION PERFORMED $1,164.16 WORTH OF WORK. THEY DID AN EXCELLENT JOB OF LOCATING THE PROBLEM AND FIXING IT FOR A REASONABLE PRICE. IN NOVEMBER 2017 WE RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FROM VOLKSWAGEN. THE RECALL IS 'SAFETY RECALL 20AI - FUEL FILTER FLANGE.' HOWEVER, THE RECALL NOTICE STATED THAT VW DOES NOT HAVE A FIX YET FOR THE ISSUE.THIS APPEARS TO BE THE ISSUE THAT HAPPENED TO OUR CAR. WE CHATTED ONLINE WITH A VW AGENT, EXPLAINED EVERYTHING AND SHE SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AT THIS POINT. THE VW AGENT PROVIDED ME WITH A CASE #(171803619), BUT SAID THAT THERE WAS NO FIX AND, THAT UNTIL VW CAME UP WITH A FIX, THERE WOULD BE NO WAY THAT WE COULD RECOUP OUR MONEY SPENT. WE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY DO NOT HAVE A FIX, SINCE IT HAPPENED TO OUR CAR AND IT'S FIXED AND RUNNING FINE TODAY. WE'D LIKE TO RECOUP OUR MONEY SPENT OUT OF POCKET FOR WHAT SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL WHICH NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT.

I special ordered my Volkswagen Touareg to get all the options I wanted, except for navigation. I've towed 7,500 lbs. from Florida to Michigan with no problem at all! I've also done some serious off-roading in Michigan's state preserves and found out that the Touareg can out-Jeep a Jeep. It even feels good at high speeds, returning 16mpg at 80-85 mph. Although maintenance every 10,000 miles can be a bit salty, it's well worth it. The new tires that I put on it at 30,000 miles improved the ride and handling beyond belief. I'm so happy with my total VW experience that we even bought a 2006 Jetta TDI from the same dealer!

I used to trade cars every 1-2 years, including BMW, Acura, Mini, Honda, and MB, but I've been keeping this car for more than 3 years now. I feel very secure and confident while driving it, and I've been lucky enough to have no mechanical troubles so far. It may not be the fanciest or most outstanding car in the parking lot, but it never goes out of style. I really like its different driving settings and I use it all the time. Overall, I'm still very satisfied with it, meeting 95% of my expectations.

I'm so glad to hear that you love your Touareg! I understand that some people have had negative experiences, but it sounds like you've taken great care of your vehicle and it's been reliable for you. It's important to keep up with regular maintenance to avoid any potential issues, but it's great to hear that you haven't had any trouble with it. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had a great experience with your SUV! It's always disheartening to read negative reviews, but it's great to see that your four years with the truck have been satisfying. It's impressive that you use it to tow a race car each month and that it has great towing power. I'm happy to hear that you haven't experienced any of the electrical or tire issues that others have mentioned. Regularly rotating and aligning the vehicle is definitely a smart move. It's great to hear that the SUV performs extremely well in the snow or winter driving conditions with its AWD system. And I completely agree with you - if you're considering the V6 vs. the V8, the V8 is definitely the way to go. This SUV is way too heavy for the V6 and the MPG difference is nominal. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

This is such a great truck! I've owned quite a few vehicles, including a Tahoe and a Camaro, but I must say that this one is the most versatile, fun, and reliable of them all. You can fit the kids in it when you need to and also use it to go out on the town. So go ahead and buy it - you won't be disappointed! :)

I read some negative reviews before writing mine and it made me feel validated. However, the dealership didn't seem to understand my concerns. The transmission has been a major issue for me. When going around curves slowly, the car bucks like a bronco and taking my foot off the gas pedal can be a challenge. Occasionally, the transmission makes a loud 'clunking' noise for no apparent reason, which is quite alarming. The electrical system has also been problematic, with various displays indicating braking problems, tire pressure issues, and more. It's worth noting that the tires may not last up to 20K miles. Additionally, this car is quite 'beepy' compared to others I've owned. Overall, it's been a frustrating experience.

Although I have had some issues with my Touareg, I have found it to be less reliable than a horse-drawn wagon that circles our city square. Unfortunately, I have had difficulty finding a dealer who will take it on trade. The vehicle requires expensive oil changes, brake jobs, and premium gas, which can add up quickly. Despite these drawbacks, I would not want anyone else to experience the same issues I have had. I hope that Volkswagen will consider improving the Touareg or discontinuing it altogether. In the meantime, I will continue to make the best of my situation.

My car has been in the shop for 64 days now. The 2nd field engineer is being sent out to evaluate the situation. Despite being told on 3 separate occasions that my car is repaired and ready to pick up, it still does not start when I arrive. The AC and alignment have been problematic since day 1. As a VW Touareg owner, I am extremely dissatisfied with the service I have received.

The Touareg may seem like a good option in its category, but my personal experience has been quite disappointing. From the tires wearing out in less than 8,000 miles to the numerous service visits, I have faced several issues with this vehicle. Recently, I had to deal with a dead battery, a stuck key, and a stuck gear shift, which made it impossible to tow the car. Despite several campaign upgrades, the owners manual did not provide any solutions to the trouble lights. Overall, my experience with the Touareg has not been satisfactory.

My lease on the 2004 Tourareg is coming to an end in January 2008. While I'm excited to explore other options, I must admit that this vehicle has required more service than I anticipated, causing me to lose valuable work hours. In hindsight, I should have done more research before leasing it. The cost of an oil change and wiper blades were much higher than I expected, and I was unaware that it required premium gas. I learned a valuable lesson from this experience. I based my decision on my love for my 2000 Beetle, which has been a reliable car. Perhaps if I had paid more attention, I would have noticed the issues with the Tourareg. Live and learn!
