1998 Dodge Avenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive, mid-sized sedan that was marketed by Dodge. The Avenger made its North American debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year as a coupe that was produced until 2000. The model name was reintroduced to the market as a four-door sports sedan starting in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The Dodge Avenger name had earlier been used on South African market Hillman Avengers in 1975 and 1976.

The 2014 model year marked the end of Avenger production as the mid-sized models for both the Dodge and Chrysler brands were consolidated into the new Chrysler 200 introduced for the 2015 model year while Dodge received the new compact Dart.

Nameplate history

The first use of the Dodge Avenger name was on a badge engineered version of the European Hillman Avenger, exclusive to South Africa. The same car was sold in North America as the Plymouth Cricket between 1972 and 1974. In place of the Hillman engines, this version used a Peugeot 1.6 litre engine (as also installed in locally assembled Peugeot 404s) in order to satisfy local content requirements. The Dodge-branded Avenger was introduced in 1975 and was then renamed Chrysler in 1976. This generation has nothing in common with later Dodge Avengers. After Chrysler ZA was merged into Sigma in 1976, the Avenger was soon cancelled to allow Sigma to free up more production capacity for the Mazda 323.

  • VIN: 4B3AU52NXWE

IT TAKES IN UPWARDS TO 10 MINUTES JUST TO PUMP $7.00 IN GAS INTO THE VEHICLE WHILE STILL SPLASHING GAS ON THE GROUND. IM TOLD THIS HAS TO DO WITH FAULTY ROLLOVER PROTECTION VALVES STICKING. WHEN FILLING UP VIA GAS CAN THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT PRESENT ITSELF. ITS JUST WHEN FILLING UP VIA GAS PUMPS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO NOT ONLY THE CAR AND ANY PERSON/SPUTTING GAS INTO THE CAR. THE SHOP REPLACED THE BALL JOINT AND AXLE, AND WERE NOW IN THE PROCESS OF FINDING A WHEEL FOR ME. I AM NOT SURE IF THE OLD PART WAS AVAILABLE OR NOT. SOMEONE INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THESE BALL JOINTS, SO I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO ASK THEM ABOUT MY CAR, AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT A DEALERSHIP HAD CORRECTED THE RECALLED BALL JOINT ON FEBRUARY 20, 2002. HOWEVER, IT WAS NOT EASY TO BELIEVE THAT IF THEY HAD FIXED IT CORRECTLY ONLY FIVE YEARS AGO THAT IT WOULD HAVE BROKEN IN SUCH A MANNER. *AK

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-04-18
  • VIN: 4B3AU52N5WE
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I EXPERIENCED 2 FAILURES OF THE CONTROL ARM LOWER BALL JOINT ON MY 1998 DODGE AVENGER. THE RIGHT SIDE FAILED ON 4/18/04 - I HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER FOR REPAIRS, DEALER DENIED FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY RECALLED BALL JOINT ISSUE AND DEALER PERFORMED RECALL INSPECTION ON THE LEFT SIDE AT THAT TIME ALSO. THE LEFT SIDE THEN FAILED ON 4/25, ONLY 5 DAYS AFTER THE DEALER "INSPECTED" THE BALL JOINT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE RECALL - UNBELIEVABLE! THIS TIME THE LEFT WHEEL CAME OFF WHICH HAD THE POTENTIAL FOR A SEVERE IF NOT FATAL ACCIDENT! MY DAUGHTER HAD JUST EXITED THE INTERSTATE AND WENT AROUND A VERY SHARP EXIT RAMP BEND. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DODGE DEALER FOR REPAIRS, AND AGAIN THE DEALER IS DENYING THE RECALL FAILURE. I SECURED THE OLD PARTS FROM THE LEFT SIDE - AND CLEARLY THERE IS CORROSION IN THE BALL JOINT THAT CAUSE FAILURE OF THE BALL STUD. I TALKED TO THE SHOP-TECH DOING THE REPAIR WORK AND HE COMMENTED ON HOW YOU COULD SEE THE CORRODED METAL IN THE BALL SOCKET AND THEN WHERE THE BREAK OCCURED YOU COULD SEE THE SHINNY METAL. I AM TRYING TO DEAL WITH DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATE ON REIMBURSEMENT FOR COSTS OF THE ACTUAL REPAIRS AND FOR COLLATERAL DAMAGE TO THE TIRES AND WHEELS. BEYOND THAT HOWEVER, I AM GREATLY CONCERNED REGARDING THE "INSPECTION" NOT CATCHING THE IMMINENT LEFT SIDE FAILURE ONLY 5 DAYS LATER - THIS TO ME DEMONSTRATES A POTENTIAL FLAW IN THE RECALL REQUIREMENTS; AND, I AM GREATLY CONCERNED THAT THERE MAY BE OTHERS OUT THERE THAT MAY NOT BE AS LUCKY AS MY DAUGHTER WAS IN AVOIDING A VERY SERIOUS OR FATAL ACCIDENT FROM THIS TYPE OF FAILURE - I THINK MORE DRASTIC MEASURES SHOULD BE INSTITUTED. Negative 1998 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Henry Larson 2024-10-16

I have experienced several issues with my car, including the check engine light coming on frequently, fuel injector problems, and a broken door handle. Repairs have cost me over $2000, and each tune-up is $500. Additionally, the ball joint broke off the axle, which could have been a serious safety hazard. I believe that Dodge should take responsibility for these issues and provide a solution, as they may have been preventable. The ball joint issue was previously recalled, which further highlights the need for action. Overall, I am confident in my assessment of the situation and believe that a resolution is necessary.

  2. Jennings Keebler 2024-09-16

This car has been a constant source of frustration for me, and I have decided to never purchase a Dodge again. However, I must say that I have gained a lot of knowledge about car maintenance due to the numerous expensive repairs I have had to make. The steering problems have been particularly troublesome, with the front ball bearings needing replacement after just 35,000 miles, and the lower control arms on the driver's side also needing to be replaced. Currently, both front struts require replacement. Additionally, the car has a poor turning radius, poor handling in snow, and it is hard to see out of the rear window. Despite these issues, I understand that some of them are due to basic maintenance, such as the need to replace the distributor cap and rotor. Overall, I have owned this car for 2 years and 20k miles, and I am confident in my decision to never purchase a Dodge again.

This car has been very reliable for me. However, the rotors on my car's front brakes have been a bit of an issue. I have had to replace them several times, but thankfully they were replaced for free under Chrysler's one-year warranty. To solve this problem, I decided to buy some cross-drilled rotors. Other than some oil consumption, this car has been rock steady. I have blown a few of the 'Infinity' speakers, but I think the humidity in Michigan is to blame for that. I also had to replace the easily bent rims due to potholes. Overall, it's cheap to maintain, but it does consume more fuel in the winter. The transmission is a bit slow, but that's not a major issue with the car.

I am impressed with the Avenger! The only thing that worried me was hearing bad things about the transmissions, but I installed a cooler and changed the fluid regularly. I now have 140,000 miles on it, and I have NEVER had any problems with the engine, transmission, or anything else. How many cars can say that nowadays? Unfortunately, I can't say the same about other import/domestic hybrids I've owned. Good job Dodge/Mitsubishi!

Despite being in a serious accident, I walked away with only a bruise thanks to the safety features of my beloved car, Mo. Although the car was written off due to the accident, it is a testament to the quality of the Avenger that it was able to protect me so well. Even after eight years, my Avenger still turned heads with its sleek design and impressive performance. Now, I am confident in my ability to find another Avenger that will meet my high standards.

This is a great car, but unfortunately, there are two major issues that need to be addressed. Firstly, the door handles have a tendency to break off. I have personally experienced this issue, as have two other people I know, and it seems to be a common problem among Avengers on the road. The cost of fixing this issue is quite high, at $250 per door without paint. Secondly, the paint on almost every black Avenger I have seen is heavily oxidized. Despite my regular waxing and keeping the car in covered parking, my entire trunk has turned white and the roof is not far behind. It's a shame that such a great car has these issues, but they can be resolved with proper attention and care.

The Dodge Avenger is a fantastic car for commuting. It has good gas mileage, a rocking stereo system, comfortable seats, and a powerful engine that allows you to easily navigate through traffic. Additionally, the motor runs cool even under hot conditions with the air on while climbing a grade.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Dodge Avenger. It's been through a lot with me behind the wheel, but even with over 200,000 miles on it, it's still running strong! I've had to replace a few things along the way, but I can honestly say that I haven't had to do any major motor work, just regular oil changes. So, if you're looking to sell your Avenger, please let me know your price! [contact info removed]

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I bought my Avenger over a year ago and have loved it ever since. It has 115000 miles on it, but it still runs great! I especially love the front of the car and how fast and sporty it looks. It's also very comfortable, and I've only had to do minimal repairs. However, I have noticed that the door handles can be a bit of a problem. Recently, I've been experiencing a shudder when the car shifts, so I'm currently looking into the cause. Thanks for listening!
