2006 Volkswagen Touareg problems
The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: ) is a car produced by German automaker Volkswagen Group since 2002 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. Considered to be the first luxury mid-size SUV from Volkswagen, the vehicle was named after the nomadic Tuareg people, inhabitants of the Saharan interior in North Africa. Originally, the Touareg was developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, and as of October 2020, the Touareg was developed together with the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. This family of vehicles are all unibody SUVs with independent suspension. The first generation (2002–2010) offered five, six, eight, ten and twelve-cylinder engine choices.
Development
The Volkswagen Touareg (internally designated Typ 7L) was developed as a joint venture project by Porsche and the Volkswagen Group, involving the Audi and Volkswagen brands. During the initial development phase of the Typ 7L and the early years of its production, Porsche operated as an independent entity, not affiliated with the Volkswagen Group. The sports car market is known for its fluctuations. In response to these market conditions, Porsche's CEO at the time, Wendelin Wiedeking, sought to diversify the company's product range. This strategy included the introduction of Porsche's first four-door vehicle. A team in Weissach, Germany, of over 300, led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, developed the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Now it is shared between the Touareg, the Audi Q7, and the Porsche Cayenne. However, there are styling, equipment, performance, and technical differences between them. The Touareg and Cayenne both seat five, while the Q7's stretched wheelbase accommodates a third row for seven passengers.
The Volkswagen Touareg is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is assembled by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany, at a facility built for Cayenne production.
Due to the demand and the exchange rates of euros against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the US, the V6 and V8 engine variants make up most of Volkswagen's American Touareg offering. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US, which are aimed at the mass market, Touaregs came in more upscale trims and competed with other luxury crossover SUVs.

Common 2006 Volkswagen Touareg problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2006 Volkswagen Touareg, several common problems have been reported:
- Alternator and AC Compressor Rubber Coupling Failure:
- The alternator and AC compressor rubber coupling can fail, causing these parts to stop working. This issue can lead to electrical system problems and affect the vehicle's performance.
- Water Pump Leakage:
- The special water pump in the Touareg 2.5 TDI R5 engine can develop leaks, potentially causing coolant to leak into the oil. This can lead to engine overheating and damage if not addressed promptly.
- Camshaft, Valve Lifters, and Camshaft Bearings Wear:
- Wear on the camshaft, valve lifters, and camshaft bearings can occur, especially after high mileage or due to long oil change intervals. Using incorrect engine oil can exacerbate this issue, leading to engine performance issues.
- Exhaust Manifold Cracking:
- The exhaust manifold in the Touareg can develop cracks, particularly in higher mileage vehicles. This can result in exhaust leaks, affecting engine performance and emissions.
- Injector Seal Leaks:
- Injector seals can start to leak due to a faulty injector housing, causing fuel to mix with oil. This can lead to engine misfires, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential engine damage if left unresolved.
- Cylinder Wall Coating Wear:
- The plasma coating on the cylinder walls can wear down over time, leading to oil consumption and compression issues. This problem is more common in higher mileage cars or those that have experienced overheating.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2006 Volkswagen Touareg highlight various issues that can affect the vehicle's reliability, performance, and overall driving experience. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and using the recommended engine oil can help mitigate these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.
What is the disadvantage of Volkswagen Touareg?
One of the most common issues that has plagued the Touareg is electrical issues. Over the years, many owners have complained about power windows, door locks, interior lighting, and infotainment system issues. A common problem that has been reported is the vehicle's wiring harnesses.
Which Touareg engine is best?
What it's like to drive, and how quiet it is. The entry-level engine for the VW Touareg range is the 3.0 TDI V6 and we reckon it's the one to go for. With 228bhp, it gives you all the grunt you could ever need, officially sprinting from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, and can tow up to 3,500kg.
How long does a VW Touareg engine last?
A typical Volkswagen Touareg has the potential to go for around 300,000 miles with excellent care. This number is solid and something to boast about for VW, though to get to this point, you must keep up with the care of your machine or it will die far sooner.
Is Touareg expensive to maintain?
The Touareg is a big, heavy, complex 4x4 that was expensive when new and remains just as expensive to fix when older, especially if you use main dealers. And when they are older they are more likely to be suffering from parts wearing out and / or breaking.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-08
- VIN: WVGZG77L76D
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: THE OUTSIDE REAR OF THE CAR SMELLED LIKE GAS. AFTER LOOKING UNDER THE CAR WE NOTICED A PUDDLE OF GAS COLLECTING AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER TOLD US THE DRIVER SIDE FUEL PUMP HAS A CRACK LEAKING FUEL. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND HAS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMENE DIES. IT IS A HAZARD TO MY FAMILY AND THE PUBLIC AS A WHOLE. APPARENTLY VW HAS DONE A RECALL FOR THIS FOR LATER MODEL YEAR TOUAREG, BUT NOT THE 2006. THEY REFUSE TO FIX IT DUE TO AGE?! IN ALL THE YEARS I'VE BEEN DRIVING, I'VE NEVER HAD A FUEL PUMP THAT CRACKS AND SPEWS GAS ALL OVER THE ROAD. IN ORDER TO EVEN FIND THE PROBLEM, THEY HAD TO TAKE OUT ALL OF THE REAR SEATS, CUT THROUGH THE CARPET OF THE VEHICLE, AND OPEN UP TWO VENTS THROUGH THE FLOOR OF THE SUV. THIS IS A SERIOUS HAZARD. SO IF I HADN'T SMELLED THE GAS AND SOMEONE THREW A CIGARETTE, MY FAMILY WOULD BE IN HAZARD FOR THEIR LIFE?! EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY OTHER EXAMPLES OF THIS ON THE INTERNET VW HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IS AN ISSUE. *TR

I HAVE INFORMED THE DEALERSHIP MANY TIMES OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS IN ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE THIS SHORTCOMING. DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CORRECT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY AND VW NOW WANTS ME TO PAY FOR THE THE REPAIR (LABOR) WITH NO GARANTEE THAT THIS ACTION WILL RESOLVE THE DEFECT. AS A RESULT, I HAVE DISCONNECTED THE REAR CENTER SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY AT THE ANCHOR NEAR THE FLOOR TO ALLOW PROPER OPERATION OF THE SEAT BACK AND THE RIGHT OUTBOARD SEATING POSITION. THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED SINCE A SAFETY DEVICE WAS DEFECTIVE WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS DELIVERED. *TR

I read the comments and I think they were pretty good! Consumers rated it 8.3 out of 10 and editors rated it 7.8. Personally, I don't think it's as bad as some people might think. When you consider the alternative Toyotas, this car is made to work as intended and is great for rough road conditions like the Sahara desert in Africa or bad roads in Africa. The only thing that could be improved is the mileage per gallon, but again, this is not a hybrid car! Overall, this is a great car backed by a reliable builder and a trustworthy holding company named PORSCHE! It even shares many parts with the Porsche, including the same chassis!

I wanted to share my thoughts on my 06 Touareg after reading some reviews that I felt were unfair. Some people were complaining about tire wear, gas mileage, and maintenance, but it's important to remember that this is a luxury SUV with a lot of features and a higher cost of ownership. If you're not prepared for that, then maybe a Honda would be a better fit. Personally, I've owned four VWs and while they may be more expensive to maintain, I've found that they require less frequent oil changes and have only needed one set of tires and front brakes over 40k miles.

Like all used vehicles, the previous owner plays a significant role in determining the quality of the experience. Although VW may have underestimated the finish on the interior buttons, they certainly did not underestimate the quality of the drivetrain. This vehicle is capable of going anywhere. We purchased a 2006 V6 with only 48k miles, and it is in immaculate condition. The ride is excellent, and it handles snow with ease. It feels sturdy and reliable. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient option, it is still affordable luxury. I highly recommend purchasing the extended warranty for added peace of mind. Thank you for considering this vehicle!
-
So far so good. I compared my Touareg with competitive models and VW surprisingly came out way on top in terms of price/feature ratio and comfort/performance ratio. I think you made a great choice! BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus are great brands, but I believe that this VW has a lot to offer as well.

Your Touareg sounds like a great vehicle! I'm glad to hear that it has been useful for transporting your two Labs and for moving college kids. It's great that you find it comfortable and enjoy all the special features. I understand that the gas mileage has been a bit of a disappointment for you, especially since you've never driven a vehicle that didn't get good gas mileage. With a V8 engine, it's understandable that you only get 18 mpg on the highway. Overall, it sounds like you have a reliable and comfortable vehicle that meets your needs.

Hi there! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the Touareg. I've driven SUVs for 20 years and I must say that I was surprised to find out that the front and back brakes need to be replaced after less than 20,000 miles of city driving. According to the service department, this is considered normal. Unfortunately, Volkswagen offers no assistance and only warranties for 12,000 miles, which can be frustrating. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you were considering buying a Touareg. Have a great day!
Amani Littel 2024-06-20
Discovering a flaw in your beloved vehicle can be devastating. It's important to be aware of the design flaw in the pollen filters of Passat, Jetta, and Touareg models, which can cause water to get trapped in the footwell when driving in the rain. Unfortunately, this issue can be costly to repair, especially in the Touareg model. While VW has faced legal action over this flaw, it's important to note that there are still many loyal VW customers. If you're considering purchasing a VW, it's important to do your research and make an informed decision.
Carson Hill 2024-06-14
I have owned my Touareg for less than a year. I purchased it from a VW dealership, hoping it would be similar to buying it new. Unfortunately, I have had to replace all four tires, and the front brakes were replaced once. Just last week, I had to replace all brakes and rotors. It costs me around $90 to fill up my tank. My husband drives a GMC Yukon with four doors, and his gas costs about the same. I love my VWs, but I think it might be time to move on!
