Common 2001 Audi Allroad problems
The 2001 Audi Allroad has been reported to have issues with oil and coolant leaks, which can lead to significant engine problems if left unaddressed. These leaks can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out gaskets or seals, and can result in reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and even engine failure in severe cases.
In addition to the oil and coolant leaks, the 2001 Audi Allroad has a history of broken tensioner chains, which are critical components of the engine system. These chains help to keep the engine's timing in sync, and if they break, it can cause significant engine damage.
Another common problem reported by Audi Allroad owners is air shock leaks, which can affect the vehicle's suspension and handling. These leaks can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out seals or damaged air shocks, and can result in reduced ride quality, poor handling, and even complete suspension failure in severe cases.
While the 2001 Audi Allroad has its share of issues, it's worth noting that the car is generally considered reliable, with problems not being too frequent compared to other vehicles of a similar size. However, if you're considering purchasing a used 2001 Audi Allroad, it's essential to thoroughly inspect the vehicle for any signs of oil or coolant leaks, broken tensioner chains, or air shock leaks, and to address any issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-08-01
- VIN: WAUYP64B21N
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: FUEL AND FUEL VAPOR LEAKS FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK PRESENTING A SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD WHEN MOVING (SLOWLY OR AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS) OR STATIONARY. THE FUEL LEAK IS MOST OBVIOUS WHEN THE TANK IS MORE THAN 1/2 FULL. VAPOR EMISSIONS OCCUR AT ALL TIMES RESULTING IN A FAILURE TO MEET EMISSIONS STANDARDS. A HARD PLASTIC MATERIAL IS USED FOR THE FUEL TANK'S VENT. IT IS CONNECTED TO A RIGID ALUMINUM VENT LINE. RELATIVE MOVEMENT AND AGING HAS RESULTED IN A FAILURE OF THE PLASTIC VENT. AUDI'S RECALL FIX FROM 2008 (NHTSA 08V-157) - I.E., INSTALLING AN EPOXY-FILLED MOLD - HAS NOT PREVENTED FAILURE OF THE PLASTIC VENT. SINCE THE PLASTIC VENT IS 'WELDED' TO THE TOP OF THE HDPE TANK, THE ENTIRE TANK MUST BE REPLACED TO ADDRESS THE FAILED VENT.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-26
- VIN: WAUYP64B71N
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 AUDI ALLROAD. WHEN FILLING THE FUEL TANK, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE TANK LEAKED FUEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V157000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,800.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-05-25
- VIN: WAUYP64B21N
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 AUDI ALLROAD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE REINFORCEMENT NIPPLE TO THE ROLLOVER ON THE FUEL TANK FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V157000 (FUEL SYSTEM) AND WOULD NOT BE REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-08-06
- VIN: WAUYP64B01N
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 AUDI ALLROAD QUATTRO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM FAILED WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO COLLAPSE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THEY INFORMED HIM THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE AIR SUSPENSION AIR BAG. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SUSPENSION WERE PREVIOUSLY REPLACED IN 2005 AND 2006. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-12-13
- VIN: WAUYP64B71N
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: AIRBAG LIGHT ON AND CONTROL MODULE NEEDS REPLACING. *TR
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-09-10
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: TROUBLE OCCURRED WITH BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER WINDOWS, BUT AT DIFFERENT TIMES. PASSENGER WINDOW WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AT THE TIME. WINDOW WOULD NOT CLOSE PROPERLY AND THEN WOULD SPONTANEOUSLY OPEN. ATTEMPTS TO CLOSE IT ENTIRELY WERE OFTEN NOT SUCCESSFUL. MOTOR WAS REPLACED ON BOTH WINDOWS-ONE UNDER WARRANTY, THE OTHER NOT. A SECOND OCCURRENCE WITH DRIVER WINDOW REQUIRED ANOTHER COSTLY REPAIR, ALTHOUGH THE CAUSE WAS DIFFERENT. THIS HAPPENS ALSO CURRENTLY WITH REAR PASSENGER WINDOW WHEN IT IS COLD. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT MECHANICAL ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-10-17
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I OWN A 2001 AUDI ALLROAD, WHICH I PURCHASED THROUGH A DEALER CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL UNUSUAL ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE, SUCH AS THE WATER PUMP BREAKING DOWN AT 50,000 MILES AND MANY ELECTRICAL ISSUES. THE MOST RECENT IS THE CAR SEAT HEATER, WHICH MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING A SHORT AND BURNING A HOLE IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT (WHICH IS LEATHER). LUCKILY, I CAUGHT IT BEFORE SMOLDERING OR A FIRE COULD HAVE ENSUED, WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED ME BODILY HARM OR RISKED THE LIVES OF MY CHILDREN HAD WE BEEN ON A LONG DISTANCE TRIP. I AM IN CONTACT WITH AUDI AND A LOCAL DEALER WHO UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE WILL DETERMINE HOW TO PROCEED WITH THE REPAIR. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT I AM UNABLE TO FIND ANY REPORTS ON AUDI ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOTORIOUS FOR HAVING MECHANICAL ISSUES. THIS ONE TRUMPS ALL OTHERS IN MY OPINION. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND I KNOW OF ONE OTHER PERSON WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THIS, BUT IT WAS WITH A VW PASSAT WAGON. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-12-30
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I BOUGHT AN AUDI ALLROAD 2001 2.7T A6 AT A DEALERSHIP IN ALBUQUERQUE NEW MEXICO. THE CAR, AT FIST, WAS HANDLING SO WELL. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE AND WELL MAINTAINED. I TOOK A TRIP TO COLORADO AND UPON MY ARRIVAL TO MY DESTINATION, THE YELLOW "CAR UNEVEN SUSPENSION" LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY MADE SOME WEIRD NOISES AND SHIFTED WEIGHT WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT 80MPH ON THE HIGH WAY. I PULLED OVER AND VISUALLY INSPECTED THE CAR. NOTHING COULD BE SEEN. I TOOK IT TOO A VW DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM TELL ME WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS WRONG. LONG STORY SHORT. NO ONE KNEW THE AUDI ALLROAD WELL ENOUGH... HOW CONVENIENT!! UPON MY RETURN TO NM AFTER COLORADO, I HAD THE CAR TAKEN TO AUDI IN ALBUQUERQUE. THEY TOLD ME THAT MY AIR RIDE SUSPENSION BAD WAS TORN OR DEAD. EITHER OR, IT WAS THE REASON FOR THE EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF SHAKING AND VIBRATING WHILE DRIVING AT SOME SPEEDS. ALTHOUGH AFTER 80MPH THE CAR WOULD STOP SHAKING. AFTER 2 MONTHS OF HAVING MY AUDI ALLROAD SITTING AT AUDI, I SAVED UP ENOUGH MONEY TO HAVE THE AIR BAG REPLACED. YOU WOULD THINK THAT ON SUCH A VITAL PART OF THE CAR, THERE WOULD BE SOME SORT OF COVERAGE. I GUESS NOT. IN THE END IT COST ME $700 TO GET JUST ONE AIR RIDE SUSPENSION BAG REPLACED. IN THE END I WAS DISAPPOINTED MY AUDI'S RESPONSE TO THE PROBLEM AND THE PRICE THEY GAVE ME FOR THE PART. IRONICALLY, AUDI ACTUALLY TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE TO AIR BAGS. THAT WAS B.S. I BOUGHT ONE BAG FROM AUDI AND DROVE MY CAR BACK TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM REINSPECT AND REPLACE THE AIR BAG. ALL SEEMED WELL AND THE ONE AIRBAG FOR THE RIDE SUSPENSION WAS REPLACED. I DID NOT NEED 2. SO BE AWARE THAT AUDI WILL BLINDSIDE YOU WITH UNNECESSARY COSTS. BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. IT IS EXPENSIVE AND A LONG AND ROUGH ROAD TO REPLACE. THE CAR OVER ALL HAS A PRETTY GOOD REPUTATION AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT EVEN MORE IF IT DID NOT HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-11-02
- VIN: WAUYP64B41N
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: I HAVE REPLACED BOTH CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ON THE 2001 AUDI ALLROAD. THE RIGHT ONE AT 42K MILES AND THE LEFT ONE AT 62K MILES. THE RIGHT CATALYTIC CONVERTER HAS FAILED AGAIN AT 115K. THE DEALER REFUSES TO EXTEND ANY WARRANTY FOR THE PART. THE DEALER STATES THAT THE ORIGINAL PART IS WARRANTED FOR 80K MILES, BUT THE REPLACEMENT PART ONLY FOR 12K MILES OR 12 MONTHS. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR OR THE EQUIPMENT. AUDI SHOULD WARRANTY A REQUIRED FEDERAL EMISSIONS PART MUCH LONGER THAN JUST 12 MONTHS. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-11-27
- VIN: WAUDC68D41A
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WE HAVE AN AUDI A4 QUATTRO 2001, WHICH HAS HAD PROBLEMS FROM THE BEGINNING. THE ISSUES ARE ELECTRICAL. THE REAR WINDOW STARTED GOING UP AND DOWN SPONTANEOUSLY WITHOUT PUSHING A BUTTON AND NOW WILL NOT GO UP OR DOWN AT ALL. IT STAYS HALF WAY DOWN ALL THE TIME. YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW THE COLD AIR FEELS ON OUR BABY IN THE BACK SEAT. THE WINDSHIELD FLUID LIGHT STAYS ON AS WELL AS THE OIL LIGHT. WE EVEN TOOK THE CAR FOR A $80 OIL CHANGE THINKING THAT WAS THE CASE, BUT THE LIGHT JUST STAYS ON. AUDI DEALER REFUSES TO LOOK AT IT WITHOUT BEING PAID 120/HR AND I THINK THIS IS JUST TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENCE FOR ALL OF THESE ELECTRICAL ISSUES TO BE HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME. THANK YOU FOR KIND ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. *NM
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-10-22
- VIN: WAUYP64BX1N
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: DT:THE VEHICLE HAS DEVELOPED A CAM SHAFT GASKET LEAK AT ONLY 60,000 MILES. ALSO, ONE OF THE CV AXLES CRACKED. THERE WHERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE DEALERSHIP FINDING THESE PROBLEMS. THE DEALERSHIP DESCRIBED TO THE CONTACT THAT THIS PROBLEM WITH THE CAM SHAFT GASKET COULD CAUSE A MAJOR OIL LEAK. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR THE ENGINE COULD SEIZE BECAUSE OF LOSS OF OIL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT CURRENTLY BEEN REPAIRED BECAUSE OF THE COST.*AK
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-01
- VIN: WAUYP64B51N
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: OWNER COMPLAINED ABOUT A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. OWNER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND WHEN CHANGING GEARS THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO DRIVE. IT WAS STUCK IN REVERSE. OWNER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A SEALED UNIT, AND THERE WAS NO WAY THEY COULD REPAIR THE DEFECT. MANUFACTURER SENT A REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE, WHO OFFERED TO ABSORB 75% OF THE REPAIR COST. *AK *NM
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-09-08
- VIN: WAUYP64B81N
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: 2001 AUDI A6 ALLROAD. AFTER THE CAR SITS FOR A PERIOD OF 5+DAY UNDRIVEN, THE AIRBAG SUSPENSION OF THIS CAR LEAKS, LENDING THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE UNLESS THE POWER SYSTEM FROM THE CAR CAN AUTO LEVEL THE VEHICLE AGAIN. NO FAULT CODES ARE SHOWN IN THE ECU. II HAVE PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE WITH THE SUSPENSION NOT LEVEL. DANGEROUS! THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT RECREATE THIS OCCURANCE WHICH HAS BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION. THEREFORE, I AM LEFT TO DRIVE A CAR WITH A LEAKING SUSPENSION, WHICH MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER HANDLING, DRIVING OR SUSPENSION FAILURE. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR THIS TO BE OCCURRING. AOA TOLD ME TODAY THAT THE CAR IS "PERFORMING TO SPECIFICATION," WHICH IS A LIE, OR ALL OF THESE A6 ALLROADS WOULD HAVE LLEAKING SUSPENSIONS.
STEERING,FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-06-10
- VIN: WAUYP64B81N
- Components: STEERING,FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
- Summary: 2001 AUDI A6 ALLROAD HAS HAD A BRAKE/THROTTLE LAG ISSUE SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED. THE CAR CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE ALLROAD AND SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE WAS ALMOST HIT BY AN ONCOMING VEHICLE WHEN THE CAR DID NOT "GO" AS SHE EXPECTED IT TOO, BASED ON HER THROTTLE INPUTS. AT ANOTHER INTERSECTION SHE LIFTED HER FOOT OFF OF THE GAS, REAPPLIED THE GAS AND THIS TIME THE CAR WENT SO FAST THAT SHE ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER AT THE UPCOMING INTERSECTION. SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE WAS ALMOST CRYING BECAUSE "I DID NOT TELL HER THE CAR 'DROVE LIKE THAT!'" THE PROBLEMS ARE: 1). AOA ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN DATED SEPTEMBER 9TH OF 2004 ON THIS ISUE., NOT A RECALL. 2) I COMPLAINED FOR OVER 1 YEAR ABOUT THIS PROBLEM TO THE DEALER BEFORE THE ECU WAS REPLACED ON MAY 15TH OF 2004. (I HAVE COPIES OF LETTERS SENT TO AUDI) 3) THE NEW CONTROL UNIT PUT IN THE CAR IN MAY OF 2004 DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY EITHER, BY REASONABLE SPECIFICATIONS, OR ELSE MY WIFE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. 4) A "JUDDER HAPPENS WHEN TURING SLOWLY AND GIVING THE CAR GAS, TOO. THIS MAY BE THE REASON THAT THE VEHICLE HAS HAD TO HAVE SEALS REPLACED IN THE MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION, TOO, FROM THE ELECTRICAL MISCOMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE ECU AND THE TRANSMISSION. 5) THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE FIGURED OUT BY AOA AS WELL AS UNDER A NATIONAL RECALL CAMPAIGN. 6) AUDI TOLD ME TODAY THAT THE CAR IS "PERFORMING TO SPECS," WHICH IS A LIE. THIS CAR HAS BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP OVER 100 DOCUMENTED TIMES, BUT AOA JUST SAYS, "WE ARE SURE THE CAR CAN BE REAPAIRED UNDER YOUR NEW CAR/CERTIFIED USED CAR WARRANTY, THANK YOU!"

I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE DUE TO MY BEING HANDICAPPED; IF I GET HIT, I MAY DIE DUE TO MY SPINAL CORD DISEASE. *AK

2001 Audi Allroad recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2001 Audi Allroad.
- Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING 68,240 MY 2001-2004 AUDI A6 QUATTRO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.7L, 2.8L, OR 3.0L ENGINES AND MY 2001-2005 ALLROAD QUATTRO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.7L OR 4.2L ENGINES. THE AGING OF THE PLASTIC MATERIAL IN THE FUEL TANK ROLLOVER VALVE COMBINED WITH BENDING STRESS FROM THE ALUMINUM VENTILATION LINE TO THE ROLLOVER VALVE NIPPLE MAY LEAD TO CRACKING OF THE NIPPLE. IF THIS HAPPENS, A FUEL LEAK MAY RESULT.
- Consequence: A FUEL LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REINFORCE THE NIPPLE ON THE ROLLOVER VALVE TO PREVENT LEAKAGE OR REPAIR THE CRACKING AT THE NIPPLE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 27, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.
- Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH HALOGEN LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS, CERTAIN CONNECTOR PINS IN THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH CONNECTOR COME INTO CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER CAUSING A SHORT CIRCUIT. NOTE: VEHICLES WITH XENON LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT AFFECTED BECAUSE THE CIRCUIT IN THESE VEHICLES CONTAINS A FUSE, WHICH PRECLUDES EXCESSIVE CURRENT FLOW IN THE CASE OF A SHORT CIRCUIT. AUDI S6 AND S6 AVANT VEHICLES ARE ALL EQUIPPED WITH XENON LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS AND, THEREFORE, ARE NOT LONGER AFFECTED BY THIS RECALL.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD LEAD TO OVERHEATING OR FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REROUTE THE WIRING HARNESS BY INSTALLING A JUMPER WIRING HARNESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 16, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.
- Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, IF A DRIVER'S KNEES PUSH AGAINST THE KNEE BOLSTER (CRASH ELEMENT) LOCATED UNDER THE DASHBOARD, IT CAN CONTACT THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WIRING HARNESS, AND AN ELECTRICAL SHORT COULD OCCUR.
- Consequence: A FIRE COULD ORIGINATE IN THE LEFT DASHBOARD AREA.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVERING ON THE KNEE BOLSTER (CRASH ELEMENT). IN ADDITION, THE WIRING HARNESS AS WELL AS THE FELT PROTECTOR ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD CARRIER WILL BE CHECKED, AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 26, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.
