Volkswagen Cc problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen CC, initially sold as the Volkswagen Passat CC, is a car built by German marque Volkswagen from 2008 to 2016. It is a variant of the Volkswagen Passat that trades headroom and cargo space for a coupé-like profile and sweeping roofline. The CC debuted in January 2008, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was discontinued after the 2017 model year.

Volkswagen said the name CC stands for Comfort Coupe, recognizing its combination of a coupe-like profile with four rather than two doors. While based on the Passat, and sharing its wheelbase, the CC is 27 mm (1.06 inches) longer, 50 mm (1.97 inches) lower, and 36 mm (1.42 inches) wider than the Passat.

While the CC has been replaced by the Arteon in most markets, the latter vehicle retains the CC nameplate in China.

Common Volkswagen Cc problems

The Volkswagen CC has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and timing chain. According to CarComplaints.com, the worst problem category for the Volkswagen CC is engine problems. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2012 model year, which has the highest number of complaints regarding engine problems. The most frequently reported problem is the check engine light turning on, which can be a sign of various engine issues.

One of the primary concerns with the Volkswagen CC engine is the defective timing chain, which has been reported in multiple model years, including 2011 and 2012. The timing chain is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle, but in the Volkswagen CC, it has been known to fail prematurely, causing significant engine damage. The main concern is the failure of the timing chain tensioner, which can lead to the timing chain slipping and causing the engine's pistons and valves to collide, resulting in severe engine failure. This issue has led to a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen, with allegations that the company knew about the problem and should have informed consumers.

Another common problem with the Volkswagen CC is the frequent timing belt failure, which can also lead to engine issues. This problem has been reported by drivers and has contributed to the car's low reliability rating.

The Volkswagen CC has also been known to have problems with the transmission, which can lead to issues with the car's driving dynamics. This problem has been reported by drivers and has contributed to the car's low reliability rating.

In addition to engine and transmission problems, the Volkswagen CC has also been known to have issues with the brake lights, which can be a safety concern for drivers. This problem has been reported by drivers and has contributed to the car's low reliability rating.

Overall, the Volkswagen CC has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine and timing chain. These issues have contributed to the car's low reliability rating and can lead to significant repair costs for drivers. It is essential to be aware of these problems when considering purchasing a Volkswagen CC, particularly for the model years with the highest number of complaints.

Volkswagen Cc

Is the Volkswagen CC reliable?

Repairpal.com indicates that the average annual repair cost of a used Volkswagen CC is $880, which is higher than average in terms of ownership costs for similar vehicles. Given this fact, it's imperative that you take your used Volkswagen CC to a repair shop if you notice any problems with it.

What problems does VW CC have?

The CC, among other VW models, is known to have timing chain issues. Designed to last the car's lifetime, the timing chain has been reported to fail early, causing significant engine damage. The main concern is the failure of the timing chain tensioner, leading to the timing chain slipping.

How many miles can a VW CC last?

You can expect a typical Volkswagen to last around 200,000 miles, which is solid for any vehicle. The Volkswagen CC matches up with this average on the higher end, though it could come in lower in some cases.

Why did VW stop making the CC?

Now, Volkswagen has cast off the aging, underperforming model as it seeks to reclaim lost market share and revenue with the CC's shadowy replacement. Sources tell Britain's Autocar that assembly of new CCs has ceased as the automaker preps an all-new entry to slot above the midsize Passat.

  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Started having problems with the fuel tank at around 65,000 I had an extended warranty on the vehicle and around 80,000 they replaced the entire fuel tank… recently, I started smelling gas very strongly inside my vehicle and took it to a honest mechanic who was able to find the fuel pump which is located behind the backseats he told me the pump is sweating and there’s a puddle of gas in it and that’s why I have the strong smear smell of gas in my vehicle. He says that it’s not even safe for me to drive the vehicle at this time and at this time, I’m trying to buy another car because I have to keep the windows down, so I don’t pass out from the smell of gas … I called Appleton Volkswagen of Sanford as they switched out the whole fuel tank at 80,000. The vehicle has about 190,000 now … there was just a recall put out for the fuel pump for certain Volkswagen year 2015 and above, but the CC is not on this.? I I feel like it should be in the recall because my car is very unsafe to drive and I’m scared that I’m gonna blow up a fire of flames right now just driving it to the repair they’re not because this is very unsafe ……

  • Summary: Hi, I’ve had my turbocharge replaced in October of 2020 at the Volkswagen dealership in Wichita, KS. Just recently my car started driving funny again such as not accelerating like it should with a slight whining noise. I can only get up to 25-30 mph then the whining noise starts up to where I have to take my foot off the gas, let my speed drop itself then proceed to accelerate again which is very dangerous. Since I had already experienced this problem not even 3 years ago I knew but I still went to get the car diagnosed and again it is the same exact problem not even 3 years later.

Volkswagen Cc 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-22
  • Date Complaint: 2023-05-05
  • VIN: WVWBN7AN2GE
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I purchased my Volkswagen CC in 2019. It hasn't been officially 4 years of owning the vehicle, and the clock spring or air bag light comes on in which it seems every 1.5 years. It costs over $800 to repair, and the first repair was replaced by certified VW OEM parts. I can't get an inspection and pass because the horn will not work. My safety is put at risk as I can't warn other drivers who aren't paying attention that I am close by. I actually ended up getting a ticket for switching lanes so fast due to getting out of the way of a vehicle on the interstate who almost ran into me. There is no warning when this happens, it just decides to stop at any given time. This page will not allow me to upload the other scanned diagnosis that was repaired from 2020. Please advise.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • Date Complaint: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: WVWBP7AN5DE
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: While I was driving I notice my steering wheel making a crumbling of plastic noise when I made any kind of turn . A few days later my Airbag error lamp started to blink. I parked and restarted my engine then the airbag became solid . My dash read “Airbag Error” . I notice all my steering wheel buttons do not work . Came home and neither does my horn . My car has never been in accident , but I feel it’s a safety hazard . I’m basically driving mute and I’m sure my airbag will not deploy in case of accident . Also, Vw does have a recall on the Clock spring but was never completed due to not hearing back from manufacturer . That was a few years back and do not understand how recalls work , but a recall was started for a reason and NOT completed. Is that even possible? This a serious safety issue if I’m in an accident without an Airbag . Also the horn will not work in case to warn other drivers of a possible fatal hazard

  • Date Complaint: 2023-02-10
  • VIN: WVWBP7AN4FE
  • Components: AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My Cruise Control unit will not engage. And I have (6) six warning lamps showing every time I operate the car. With these lamps showing on the info system screen, the cruise control Will not engage! I asked the dealership about it. And was told that the wheel bearing unit has moved away from where it is bolted on. And now it is touching the Air Bag control module. That's why I've got six lamps showing up on the center info screen, every time I operate the car. And on another incident. I was traveling on the interstate and their was some water that had collected in a dip between hills. And when I traveled through it, the force of the water flowing into the engine department, knocked the cruise control OFF. Disengaged it. I'm am available for inspection of said vehicle. Oh yes, this happened once before, but all of a sudden all the warnings lamps turned off. But I'm not so lucky now. It doesn't seem to affect the Air Bags any, But I could be Wrong! The dealer explained what has happened within the components of my problem. But, since I wasn't forth coming to pay them to check or repair it, nothing got done. And it has been going on for about 6 - 8 months.

Latest negative Volkswagen Cc car reviews

  1. Damian Altenwerth 2025-07-28

    Vehicle year: 2009

I had a great experience with CC in the beginning. However, after purchasing the car, I encountered some issues due to a recall for the seat wiring. Additionally, the window leaked due to a seal issue and the trunk would not close. These were all warning signs of things to come. Unfortunately, after the warranty expired due to high mileage, the dashboard around the ignition and glove box started bubbling and peeling. The trunk also stopped opening and the wire harness broke, despite no obvious rodent chewing that caused it. The repair cost me $250.00. In August, there was a recall for the steering column console, and in September, the steering wheel locked up. I initially thought it was due to the recall, but it turned out to be a rack and pinion issue that was not related to the recall. The VW service estimated the repair cost to be $1600.00, plus an $80 tow. Despite these issues, a sales colleague of mine was still interested in buying the car.

  2. Turner Boyer 2025-07-25

    Vehicle year: 2010

I completely agree with the review posted by Chris on 9/20/10 (see below). I have now owned this car for one year and wanted to share an update. While I still love this car for its sleek looks and fuel economy, I have noticed some areas for improvement. The ride can be quite harsh and there is excessive road noise, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the frameless doors, while cool, can be annoying, especially when they freeze up in the winter and don't lower as they should to allow you to get in. They also cause too much wind noise on windy days. The car also makes some rattling sounds on rough roads and feels underpowered at low speeds. Next time, I would consider a Ford or Buick for better noise insulation and a smoother ride. Lastly, I found the keys on CC's keyfob to be hard to push. Overall, I hope this update helps others in their car-buying journey!

  3. Anthony Murazik 2025-06-22

    Vehicle year: 2009

I've owned the car for two years and unfortunately, it has been in the shop about six times. Two of those times were to replace the rear main seal in less than ten months. Additionally, there is a problem with carbon build-up that cost about $600 to clean, and a constant rumble noise from the front end, even after new tires and a front-end alignment. I also had to replace the fuel pump, coolant pump, and fuel rails. Despite my experience, if you're still in the market for a VW, I would be happy to sell you mine at a discounted price!

  4. Oscar Mitchell 2025-06-07

    Vehicle year: 2012

I purchased my 2012 VW CC 2.0 luxury with 54 miles on it and was initially drawn to its style and color. Despite encountering some issues, I remained proactive in addressing them by taking the car to the dealership for every 10,000 mile service and malfunction. I also purchased an extended warranty, which proved to be a wise decision when I needed a costly windshield repair. While some repairs were difficult to source, I was able to find the necessary parts and even stocked up on extras. Although the car experienced multiple issues, including a transmission failure, I was able to find a cost-effective solution and my mechanic has confirmed that it is now ready for pick up. While I have had some challenges with this car, I have learned a lot and will take this experience into consideration when making future purchases.

  5. Barney Quigley 2025-06-05

    Vehicle year: 2017

As a seasoned VW lessee, I opted for the 2.0turbo and DSG transmission in my 1st CC. The car's styling is a standout feature, with its progressive, swept-back design that looks great both inside and out. The CC also delivers a precise steering and a responsive turbo 4 and gearing, making it a joy to drive. It's a comfortable, easy-to-drive car that's perfect for both highway cruising and commuting. While the transmission may take some getting used to, occasional slow shifts in traffic can be dangerous. Unfortunately, after 3 years, I became dissatisfied with the car and the VW brand. The dealer refused to address the rattles, and the tires wore out prematurely due to factory alignment issues. Additionally, the gas door would freeze shut in cold weather, and the infotainment system was outdated. I ultimately turned it in early and switched to a domestic brand, which I'm very happy with.

    Vehicle year: 2013

I really like this car, but there are a couple of things that are quite annoying. The main issue I have is with the backup camera and navigation system. Unfortunately, my backup camera takes a long time to come on, making it almost useless. I have taken it to VW four times and even contacted VW Headquarters, but they were unable to fix the issue. They replaced the entire navigation unit and camera, but it did not make any difference. It's disappointing because I paid a lot for this feature. Additionally, there is a popping sound in the windshield that I will need to have looked at eventually.

  2. Dereck Altenwerth 2025-07-28

This is my second VW CC. I traded my 2011 CC Sport 2.0 for a 2014 CC V6R 4Motion. I also researched and priced Audi A6 3.0, Audi A5 Cabriolet, and BMW 535. In my opinion, the CC V6 AWD Executive offers nearly all the same features and quality with exceptional styling, comfort, and ergonomics. It drives very similarly to the Audi A6 3.0 Quattro for nearly $20k less.

I can understand your frustration with having to fold your head while getting in, and the B pillar being in the wrong spot can be a bit of a nuisance. However, mirrors can definitely help with this issue!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your VW CC! It sounds like a fantastic car that you're really happy with. The ride seems super quiet and incredibly smooth, which must make for a really comfortable driving experience. It's great to hear that the car looks sleek and gorgeous too. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the VW CC, it sounds like it's easily one of the best cars on the road for under 30K!

I have been a proud owner of my CC Sport since December 2010. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the DSG transmission. It seems to struggle to find the right gear, causing the car to lose power when pulling out. Unfortunately, this detracts from an otherwise terrific car. Despite having taken it back to the dealer, they have been unable to find any issues. I have been advised that switching to a manual transmission would be a better option. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
