2002 Chevrolet Express problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common 2002 Chevrolet Express problems

The Chevrolet Express 2002 is a reliable workhorse for many small business owners, but it has some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common problems with the Chevrolet Express 2002 is fuel pump failure, which is the most reported problem for the 1999 model year, according to CarComplaints.com. The average cost to fix this problem is $3,000, with an average mileage of 25,000 miles. However, some owners have reported fuel pump failures at higher mileages, with an average cost to fix of $4,000 at 70,000 miles and $8,300 at 67,000 miles.

Another common problem with the Chevrolet Express 2002 is transmission damage due to first gear engagement at highway speeds and then not transmitting power with D4 or R selected. This problem was reported in a recall for the 2008 model year, which affected 2,481 vehicles equipped with a 6.0L (RPO LY6) V8 engine, 4L80E (RPO MT1) transmission, 4.10 (RPO GT5) axle, and 75 MPH governor (RPO 9D7). The recall required dealers to reprogram the transmission control module and engine control module free of charge.

Interior lighting is another issue that some owners of the Chevrolet Express 2002 have reported. According to Edmunds.com, almost every interior light has failed in the 2002 model year, including the dash, radio, window/lock buttons, and control panel lights. This problem can be frustrating for owners who rely on the van for business purposes, as it can make it difficult to see the controls and instruments.

The Chevrolet Express 2002 also has issues with fuel level sensor failure, which can cause the fuel tank to read the fuel level incorrectly. Replacing the entire fuel pump module is recommended, which can range from $600-$1000.

The intake manifold gasket may also develop an external engine oil or coolant leak, which can cause the coolant to mix with engine oil and potentially damage the engine. Replacing the intake manifold gasket can cost around $500.

Finally, damaged front electrical components can occur if excess water is used on the rear cargo mat. This can cause various electrical components under the front carpet/rubber mat to become damaged, which can be costly to repair.

In summary, the Chevrolet Express 2002 is a reliable workhorse for many small business owners, but it has some common problems that owners should be aware of. These include fuel pump failure, transmission damage, interior lighting issues, fuel level sensor failure, intake manifold gasket leaks, coolant leaks, and damaged front electrical components. By being aware of these problems and addressing them promptly, owners can ensure that their Chevrolet Express 2002 remains a reliable and efficient vehicle for their business needs.

Negative 2002 Chevrolet Express car reviews

  1. Ryder Beier 2024-05-29

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I'm selling my van, which I bought brand new back in July 2001. Since my kids have grown up and moved out, I don't need as much space anymore. It's been a great family van and it tows really well. There's plenty of room for everyone and everything! I think it would be the perfect vehicle for a family with 2-4 kids. Let me know if you're interested!

This van has been back and forth to/from Mexico 20+ times. It's surprisingly good on fuel on the highway (Lt). With seats out, it holds an amazing amount of gear. I'm going to miss the old girl...

  3. Hudson Goodwin 2024-08-22

Excellent vehicle! You'll love the comfortable ride. It's perfect for a relaxing get-a-way and ideal for long trips!

  4. Green Hudson 2024-08-10

You made a great choice by buying a van to have more cargo space! And it seems like your mission was accomplished. Removing all the seats has created a cavernous room, which is perfect for your needs. Not only is it practical, but it's also easy to drive and provides a relaxing ride on long trips. The high seat position is a great feature that gives you a good view of the road. The LT trim is very appealing and adds to the overall experience. It sounds like you enjoy stepping into your van every time!
