Common 2013 Volkswagen Gti problems

The Volkswagen GTI 2013 is a popular car among driving enthusiasts, but like any vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems. One of the most significant issues is related to the cam chain tensioner. Early versions of this part can cause a rattling noise at startup, which in severe cases can lead to the chain skipping and causing further damage. The tensioner must be replaced with an updated part to prevent this problem.

Water pump failures are another common issue with the Volkswagen GTI 2013. The water pump housing is made of plastic, which tends to degrade over time, leading to leaks or damage from oil leaking on the pump. Replacing the water pump can be a time-consuming process, taking around 3.5-4.0 hours of labor plus parts and extra coolant. Therefore, it's essential to regularly check the coolant level to prevent the engine from overheating.

Coolant and oil leaks, failing ignition coils and injectors, and carbon buildup on valves are other common problems reported by owners of this car.

The timing belt or chain is a maintenance-free timing (cam) gear chain, with the oil pump and the two balance shafts driven by separate chains, making three chains in total. The US EPA rates the 2010-2014 GTI manual at 21/31 mpg (11.2/7.6 L/100km) on premium gasoline, while the 2010 and 2014 GTI auto are rated at 24/32 mpg, and the 2011-2013 GTI auto gets 24/33 mpg or 9.8/7.1 L/100km.

In summary, while the Volkswagen GTI 2013 is a popular car among driving enthusiasts, it has several common problems, including cam chain tensioner failures, water pump failures, coolant and oil leaks, failing ignition coils and injectors, and carbon buildup on valves. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent these issues and ensure the car's longevity.

Is 2013 GTI a good car?

Edmunds says

The 2013 Volkswagen GTI doesn't boast scorching specifications, but as a whole package -- comfort, drivability and performance -- it's one of our top picks for a sporty hatchback.

What is the common problem with Golf GTI?

Next problem is the intake manifold Runner the intake manifold is in charge of directing the flow of air into the head of the engine. It has a series of flaps that control the air velocity.

Is GTI high maintenance?

VW GTI is robust, simple and well-built car. Being used with sense, maintenance is not more expensive, than any other mini. Once driver starts to push his GTI over the limit, maintenance costs will skyrocket.

What are the disadvantages of GTI?

Cons

  • Infotainment system can be frustrating to use.
  • Not as much power as some rival hot hatches.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-18
  • VIN: WVWHD7AJXDW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I'M ON MY WAY TO WORK ON THE HIGHWAY GOING UPHILL AND THE TEMPERATURE RED LIGHT STARTS FLASHING. I DECIDED TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE THE FLASHING LIGHT HAD ME CONCERNED. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE STAYED AT NORMAL POSITION SO I WAS ABLE TO BRING IT HOME. I WAITED AWHILE AND THEN CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD FOR COOLANT LEVEL AND IT WAS DOWN TO THE BOTTOM BARELY ANY LEFT. SO I BOUGHT THE RECOMMENDED COOLANT BY VW AND FILLED IT UP TO LEVEL. I DROVE THE NEXT DAY AND PARKED IN MY DRIVE WAY AND LATER THAT DAY I SAW COOLANT PUDDLE ON CONCRETE DRIPPED FROM ENGINE. I SUSPECT IT'S THE WATER PUMP AGAIN. I HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR BEFORE WITH COOLING SYSTEM TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THE DEALERSHIP DEALT WITH IT BY REPLACING WATER PUMP WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THE SECOND TIME I TOOK IT TO MECHANIC AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLACE WATER PUMP AND FIX THE PROBLEM. I WAS ABLE FIND THE LEAK AND TAKE PICTURES. IT SEEMS TO BE LEAKING NEAR THE WATER PUMP. SO RIGHT NOW I'M FILLING COOLANT ALMOST EVERYDAY UNTIL I CAN GET TO THE DEALERSHIP.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-18
  • VIN: WVWHV7AJ1DW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND WHEN I WENT TO SLOW DOWN FOR A RED LIGHT MY BRAKES WERE NOT ENGAGING UNTIL MY PEDAL WAS PUSHED WELL OVER HALF WAY DOWN. THIS WAS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. I STARTED NOTICING THAT IF I PUMPED MY BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKES WOULD BECOME MORE EFFECTIVE, BUT THE VEHICLE REALLY WAS NOT SAFE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL TIRES PLUS REPAIR SHOP WHO BELIEVED THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER WAS BAD AND IT WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. ONCE THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE AND THE BRAKES STILL WERE NOT EFFECTIVELY ENGAGING. AT THAT POINT THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS HAD GOTTEN REPLACED AND EVEN AFTER THAT, NOTHING HAD IMPROVED. TIRES PLUS DECIDED THE CAR NEEDED TO GO TO VOLKSWAGEN BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHO DIAGNOSED THE CAR AND INSISTED THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH MY BRAKES AND THAT THE WAY MY BRAKE PEDAL FELT WAS NORMAL. I KNOW FOR A FACT THIS ISN'T TRUE AND THE SERVICE CENTER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY CONCERNS. IN RESPONSE I WAS TOLD THAT I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW BRAKES ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK AND THAT MUCH DEAD PEDAL TRAVEL IS NORMAL. I PICKED MY CAR UP AND AFTER A WEEK MY BRAKES HAD GOTTEN WORSE AND THEY CONTINUE TO GET WORSE. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS STILL NOT ENGAGING MY BRAKES UNTIL OVER HALFWAY THROUGH THE PEDAL TRAVEL AND ONCE THE BRAKES DO ENGAGE THE PEDAL IS VERY STIFF. I AGAIN EXPRESSED MY CONCERNS TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR SIMPLY YELLED AT ME AND TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR AND THAT I NEEDED TO JUST LISTEN TO THE EXPERTS. AND YET THEY HAVE NOT DRIVEN MY CAR BECAUSE THEY DENIED TO DO SO. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO TWO OTHER REPAIR SHOPS WHO INSIST THERE IS AN ISSUE BUT COULD NOT PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE AND INSIST VOLKSWAGEN NEEDS TO DEEPLY LOOK INTO MY CARS BRAKING SYSTEM BUT VOLKSWAGEN WON'T DO FURTHER INVESTIGATING INTO THE BRAKES.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-10
  • VIN: WVWGD7AJ0DW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: MY 2013 VW GTI HAS HAD DEFECTIVE WATER (COOLANT) PUMP. I HAVE ALREADY HAD THREE (3!) MAJOR REPAIRS TO REPLACE THE FAULTY WATER PUMP AND FIX THE LEAK OF COOLANT. THE ISSUE FIRST STARTED AT ABOUT 10,000 MILES AND REOCCURED AT 15,000 MILES AND THEN AT 25,000. I ALWAYS MAINTAINED AND REPAIRED MY CAR AT VW DEALERSHIPS. THE ISSUE WITH THE WATER PUMP USUALLY STARTED WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION ON A MAJOR ROAD OR A FREEWAY WITH MY FAMILY (INCLUDING 2 CHILDREN) INSIDE. THE LIGHT WOULD USUALLY TURN ON ON THE DASHBOARD. FORTUNATELY, IN ALL THE INSTANCES, WE'VE BEEN NOT FAR FROM THE HOME OR A SAFE LOCATION TO PARK AND REQUEST ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. THESE INCIDENTS WITH WATER PUMP, WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION CAN LEAD TO CRASH OR OTHER SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.
2015-10-16

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-02
  • VIN: WVWGD7AJ0DW
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 2013 VW GTI HAS AN ONGOING ISSUE-CONDITION WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A FUEL PUMP AND/OR LOW FUEL PRESSURE. IT USUALLY OCCURS RANDOMLY, WITHOUT ANY HINT. AFTER THE START UP THE CAR STALLS WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. AT THAT POINT THE CAR WOULD DIE AT EVERY ATTEMPT TO START UP AGAIN. HOWEVER, THE CAR WILL COME BACK TO LIFE AFTER STAYING IDLE FOR 40-60MINUTES (IN SEVERE CASES EVEN LONGER). IN ADDITION, WE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHEN THE CAR WOULD STALL WHILE IN SLOW MOTION ON A HILL. THE GAS TANK IN ALL INSTANCES WAS FULL OR NEAR FULL. WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS MAJOR AND MINOR INCIDENTS THAT HAVE STARTED SINCE APPROXIMATELY 7,000 MILES. WE HAD SOMEHOW TOLERATED SUCH RANDOMLY OCCURRING INCIDENTS UNTIL THE ISSUE BECAME (SUDDENLY) ALMOST A DAILY NORM IN DECEMBER 2014 AND JANUARY 2015. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY THE VW DEALERSHIP AT LEAST 2 TIMES WITHIN 2 WEEK PERIOD. THE ISSUE STILL OCCURS THESE DAYS, YET WITH LESSER FREQUENCY. THE ISSUE IS CAUSING SERIOUS HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS ON TOP OF THE MAJOR INCONVENIENCE AND ADDITIONAL OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES.
2015-07-06

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-20
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: HAD CAR FOR NOT EVEN TWO YEARS AND BEEN THROUGH TWO WATER PUMPS THAT HAVE WENT FOR NO REASON AT ALL. THE DEALER WHEN ASKED AM I THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THE ANSWER HAS BEEN ONLY ONE OTHER PERSON HAD THIS ISSUE BUT I'M THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS BEEN BACK FOR THE SECOND TIME FOR FAULTY WATER PUMPS AND THE DEALER CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHY THIS HAS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN.

2013 Volkswagen Gti recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2013 Volkswagen Gti.

2018-05-16
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Eos, 2012 Passat, 2012-2016 CC, 2015-2016 e-Golf, 2011-2015 Touareg, 2012-2015 and 2017 Tiguan, and 2011-2016 Golf and 2011-2013 GTI vehicles. Modifications made while the vehicles were in an internal evaluation period may cause the affected vehicles to not comply with all of the applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Consequence: If the vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, there could be an increased risk of a crash, fire, or injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles to make them fully compliant or Volkswagen will repurchase them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 29, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
2015-08-04
  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

Negative 2013 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

  1. Rashad Connelly 2025-01-04

I purchased the car from CarMax with 66k miles and experienced no issues during the first year of ownership. However, after that, the car began to experience a number of problems, including issues with the intake manifold, constant EPC, tire, and engine lights, and numerous instances of coil pack failure. Unfortunately, this car has left me stranded on multiple occasions. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this car to anyone unless you enjoy frequent repairs.

  2. Ladarius Ward 2024-09-06

I have owned my GTI for 3 years and it has been an absolute pleasure to drive. The car grips the road beautifully and is very comfortable on long trips. The interior materials, fit and finish are excellent. Although, I have had some issues with the car's quality. At 13K miles, the cooling pump failed, but it was quickly fixed under warranty. Unfortunately, in the last month, at 30K miles (mostly highway), my clutch completely failed and had to be replaced under warranty. As someone who has been driving manual transmissions for the past 20 years, I have never had one fail on me, so it was clearly a manufacturing failure. To top it off, last week the cooling pump failed again!!! Thankfully, it is still under warranty, but it is an expense that I may incur in the future. I have mixed feelings about recommending the GTI. If you can overlook the maintenance and having the car at the shop often, the GTI is a great driving experience. However, if you are looking for something more reliable, there are probably better options out there. I will likely trade it for something else.

  3. Abdul Schuster 2024-06-28

I leased my 2014 GTI in February of 2014 and unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. From the day I purchased it, my heater did not work properly and my front tire was losing air about every 5 days. I was disappointed to find out that the dealer wanted me to pay to fix these issues, but after contacting customer care, they eventually did pay to have them fixed. However, I have had a few more problems since then, including having to replace the water pump twice. It can be frustrating to have to take my car into the dealer so often, especially for a brand new car. I hope that Volkswagen can improve the reliability of their vehicles and provide better customer service in the future.

  4. Kyleigh Leuschke 2024-03-29

The car had a few issues during its lifetime, but thankfully most of them were covered under warranty. The fuel pump and water pump were replaced at 14K and 17K miles respectively, and the front suspension bushing broke at 38K miles, but all of these were covered under warranty. Unfortunately, the LED headlights stopped working at 45K miles, but again, this was covered under warranty. The map sensor for the fuel pump went at 61K miles, but unfortunately, it was not covered under warranty. The car had a few tire bursts due to bumpy roads at 21K, 43K, 89K, and 132K miles, but the low profile tires were to blame. The tires were replaced, and the car was back on the road. At 95K miles, the engine deposits were excessive, and the car had to be fixed. The A/C stopped working at 110K miles, but it was fixed. The car soldiered on to 170K miles, but unfortunately, the transmission gave out. Despite these issues, the car was maintained per the service schedule, and the engine is still in good condition.

Positive 2013 Volkswagen Gti car reviews

  1. Merl Carroll 2024-11-19

This car is fantastic! The interior and exterior fit and finish are top-notch. The car has plenty of power and delivers it uniformly with almost no turbo lag. The gearbox shifts easily and quickly, and clutch uptake is very smooth. Handling is precise with just a bit of understeer, which can be corrected with a little extra gas. With 18Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about the check-engine light. It came on in August, but I didn't notice any drivability issues. Unfortunately, the problem turned out to be a sensor in the intake manifold which required replacement of the entire manifold. It was a bit of an expensive repair, but it did slightly improve drivability and fuel economy. I found out that this is a known issue in some VWs and its repair is covered by VW on other models but not this GTI. On the bright side, after 67k miles and 7 years, the GTI remains both practical and fun to drive. I'm not planning on replacing it anytime soon. By the way, I have some good news from VW: I received a letter extending the warranty on the intake manifold to 10 years or 120k miles. They reimbursed me for 90% of the repair in 2020 by my mechanic. Others in this discussion should also be happy. The only minor issue I had was with the A/C Schrader valves, which I had replaced and the system recharged. The car continues to be fun, practical, and reliable. Just a quick update: the GTI developed a small leak in the water pump that required replacing it, which was the same issue that arose in 2015 (see above). It was a bit of an expensive repair, but it was worth it for an otherwise reliable, fun-to-drive vehicle. Overall, the vehicle is aging well, now with 87k miles. The car is always garaged, so there's no significant wear on the interior or exterior. I have no plans to replace the GTI anytime soon.

After a year and a half of driving my 2013 GTI, I have to say it's a great car! This is our go-to road trip car, so it's mostly used for highway cruising and long days of driving. It's fast, fun, and fuel-efficient. What more could you ask for? -----UPDATE----- Well, it's not just for road trips anymore. I've turned 45k miles and the car is still great! I've been especially impressed with how well the car has held up. I've not had a single recall or any mechanical issue with the car, ZERO. I've only had to take care of gas, oil, tires, and unplugging the sound maker under the dash. It's still fast and fun. I keep track of my gas mileage pretty religiously and have averaged 30.7 mpg. My biggest complaints are with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, which sometimes has a mind of its own, and the OEM tires, which I have finally worn out and replaced with something a bit more sporty. All said, it's really just a premium economy car. But with plenty of power, sporty but comfortable handling, and a very nice interior, what more do you really need? Drive on! -----UPDATE----- I absolutely love this car. It's still with me, almost 64,000K and still no real issues outside of tires. I am now running BFGOODRICH g-Force COMP-2 A/S, but have hit a couple of big potholes and had to replace one. There is an intermittent squeak coming from the rear hatch and one from the sunglasses holder in the console in front of the sunroof, but nothing else to even complain about. My total fuel economy has dropped .2 mpg over the last 20k miles, but I have done more city driving, so that is understandable. I have been waiting for something to fail and nothing has. I have read horror stories about carbon buildup on the direct injection engines and wonder if I have just not noticed degradation in power? Great car! When it's time for something new, VW will be on my list.

I absolutely loved owning my 2013 GTI with convenience package and sunroof for 2 years. The car was a blast to drive and I never had any issues with it. The Clark plaid interior was a personal favorite of mine and the seats were the most comfortable I've ever had. The navy blue exterior was also a great touch, not too flashy. As a daily driver, the car was both peppy and comfortable. The infotainment Navigation worked great and paired with my Bluetooth easily every time, although the resolution could have been better. I miss the car a ton, but when I moved to an area with lots of snow, I thought it was best to get a car with AWD. I ended up buying a 2015 Audi A3, which is made by the same company and on the same platform as the GTI, but I still prefer driving the GTI. Those seats are just fantastic!

I purchased this GTI in 2014, a year after the original owner, with only 11k miles. Even after 6 years, I have only driven 36k miles, but I am still incredibly impressed with the long-term quality and reliability of this VW. This is my 7th Volkswagen, and the one I have owned the longest, even at 36 years old. I have had some amazing VWs in the past, including a 2004 Passat W8 4-Motion 6-Speed Manual and a 2008 Golf R32. Although my 2013 GTI has some considerable modifications, it is just as exciting and enjoyable as my previous VWs. I absolutely love this car and have not had any issues or service visits outside of standard maintenance. The materials, finishes, and initial quality have held up impeccably. In a couple of years, I plan to buy an SUV and keep the GTI as a weekend/fun car. There is absolutely no reason to part with it, and I would be sad to let it go. This car is fast, confident, solid, reliable, fun, beautiful, and just an all-around enjoyable car.

My only issue with this car was the original mpg rating of 28-33. However, I never came close to that, averaging 18-20mpg, albeit most of this was city driving. I really love my GTI, but I'm currently looking for a more fuel efficient ride.
