The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common 2005 Toyota Highlander hybrid problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2005, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Ruptured Oil Lines: There have been issues with ruptured oil lines in the Toyota Highlander models, which can lead to oil leaks and potential engine damage. It is crucial for car buyers considering a second-hand Toyota Highlander to be aware of this problem and inspect the vehicle thoroughly for any signs of oil leaks.
  2. Brake Actuator Defects: The 2005 Toyota Highlander Hybrid has been associated with defective brake actuators, which can impact the braking system's performance. This issue can lead to brake failure, posing a significant safety concern for drivers. It is essential to address any brake-related problems promptly to ensure the vehicle's safety on the road.
  3. Engine Failure: Some 2005 Toyota Highlander models have been linked to engine failure, particularly in the 2001-2005 range. This issue underscores the importance of conducting thorough inspections and obtaining a detailed vehicle history before purchasing a used Toyota Highlander to avoid potential costly repairs related to engine malfunctions.
  4. Airbag Problems: Older models of the Toyota Highlander, including the 2005 version, have reported airbag problems. Ensuring that the airbag system is functioning correctly is crucial for the safety of the vehicle's occupants in the event of a collision. Any issues with the airbag system should be addressed promptly by a qualified mechanic.
  5. Heater and Air Conditioner Issues: Complaints have been raised about the air temperature changing unexpectedly due to loose solder joints at the circuit board behind the temperature control knob. This can lead to discomfort for passengers and affect the overall driving experience. Proper maintenance and timely repairs are essential to address these HVAC system issues.

These common problems reported by owners of the Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2005 highlight the importance of regular maintenance, thorough inspections, and prompt repairs to ensure the vehicle's safety, reliability, and longevity. Addressing these issues proactively can help owners mitigate potential risks and enjoy a smoother driving experience with their Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
