2008 Kia Optima problems
The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common 2008 Kia Optima problems
The 2008 Kia Optima is known for several common problems, including electrical issues, engine problems, faulty starter, faulty door latch, faulty throttle position switch (TPS), and a weak alternator.
Electrical problems are a common issue in the 2008 Kia Optima, with many owners reporting dim headlights and taillights, flickering lights, and difficulties starting the car. The root cause of these problems is often a faulty ground connection between the negative post and the battery terminal. This connection can corrode over time, leading to poor electrical conductivity and a range of issues. To solve this problem, the battery terminal and the surrounding area should be cleaned and grounded to bare metal, ensuring a solid electrical connection
Engine problems are another well-known issue in the 2008 Kia Optima. These problems are often caused by severe engine manufacturing and failure issues, which can lead to premature bearing wear and tear. In some cases, this can cause uncontrollable engine seizing, increasing the risk of accidents. Kia did issue a recall in 2017 to help owners repair or replace affected Optima engines for free. Additionally, several models of the Kia Optima are known for starter problems, where engines suddenly won't start at all, with no clear indication of the issue. Replacing the battery and/or parking sensor has helped some owners resolve this problem.
The faulty door latch problem is also common in the 2008 Kia Optima, making it difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. This issue is caused by a faulty door latch assembly, and replacing the worn latch typically resolves the problem. The main symptoms of a faulty TPS are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. This issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone, and Kia has taken steps to improve the necessary parts to resolve this issue.
A weak alternator is another common problem in the 2008 Kia Optima. This issue generally becomes apparent when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as when running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time. Insufficient battery charging capability and difficulty starting the vehicle are common symptoms. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue, but several owners have experienced the same issue over time. Kia has released a new alternator that owners can purchase and install to resolve this problem.
In summary, the 2008 Kia Optima has several common problems, including electrical issues, engine problems, faulty starter, faulty door latch, faulty throttle position switch (TPS), and a weak alternator. These issues can lead to a range of symptoms, from dim headlights and taillights to uncontrollable engine seizing and difficulty starting the vehicle. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the 2008 Kia Optima

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-06-22
- VIN: KNAGE124085
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY HUSBAND WENT TO WALMART TO DROP OFF A MOVIE. WHEN HE CAME OUT HE SAW ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES HOLDING THE CAR FROM BEHIND BECAUSE IT WAS ROLLING BACK. MY HUSBAND PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF AND THE CAR STILL ROLLED BACK. WHEN HE GOT IN THE CAR AND TURNED IT ON THE HEAD BOARD SHOWED IT WAS ON 'N'. NO CHECK ENGIN LIGHT OR ANY OTHER WARNING LIGHT WAS ON. THE SHIFT GEAR WAS STUCK ON N. AND IF MANUAL BRAKE IS NOT ON THEN THE CAR WILL ROLL BACK. YOU CAN MOVE THE GEAR STICK IN CAR TO PARK OR DRIVE BUT THE ACTUAL CAR IS STUCK ON N. SHIFT GEAR WILL NOT CHANGE FROM N. IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR THE WALMART EMPLOYEE STOPPING OUR CAR THAN IT COULD HAVE BEEN ALOT WORSE BY CRASHING INTO OTHER CARS BEHIND IT OR EVEN RUNNING OVER SOMEBODY CAUSING A FATALITY!!! CALLED KIA COMPANY TO REPORT IT BUT THEY DENIED IT BEING RELATED TO THE RECALL THAT SHOWS ONLINE ON KIA OPTIMAS 2006-2008. THEY TOLD ME ONLY SPECIFIC OPTIMAS HAVE THAT RECALL. WE HAVEN'T EVER HAD ANY ISSUES WITH OUR CAR SINCE WE BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2008. WE HAVE ALWAYS MAINTAINED IT AND TAKEN GOOD CARE OF IT. THIS IS A FIRST FOR OUR CAR AND THIS INCIDENT WE HAD WITH OUR CAR IS THE SAME DESCRIPTION AS THE RECALL. WE FEEL THAT KIA SHOULD COVER THIS COST DUE TO IT BEING A MANUFACTUER ERROR. THE RECALL STATES ' INCORRECTLY INSTALLED CABLES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO COME LOOSE FROM THE TRANSMISSION, DISABLING THE SHIFTER. IF THE CABLE COMES LOOSE, A CAR IN PARK WOULDN'T SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR WHILE A VEHICLE ALREADY IN GEAR WOULDN'T SHIFT TO REVERSE, NEUTRAL OR PARK. IF A CAR WAS PARKED AND ACCIDENTALLY LEFT IN GEAR, AND IF THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT APPLIED, THE CAR COULD POTENTIALLY ROLL AWAY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR INJURY.' KIA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE AND TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM AND STOP SAYING ONLY SPECIFIC VEHICLES HAVE THE RECALL. WELL MY CAR DID!! ITS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA AND HAD THE SAME INCIDENT HAPPEN THATS ON RECALL. HELP!!

2008 Kia Optima recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2008 Kia Optima.
- Manufacturer: Kia Motors Corporation
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.
- Manufacturer: KIA MOTORS CORPORATION
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: KIA MOTORS AMERICA, INC. (KIA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 KIA OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JANUARY 29, 2008, AND MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2008 KIA RONDO VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 13, 2006, THROUGH MARCH 21, 2008. THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) MAY BECOME DAMAGED THROUGH USAGE OVER TIME. IF THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY BECOMES DAMAGED, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WILL EXPERIENCE A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY.
- Consequence: IF THE CLOCK SPRING DEVELOPS HIGH RESISTANCE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVERS AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.
- Remedy: KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VEHICLE'S AIR BAG CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 11, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.
- Manufacturer: KIA MOTORS CORPORATION
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT
- Summary: KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JUNE 13, 2007. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SHIFT CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, CAUSING TENSION IN THE CABLE. IF PRESENT, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY'S DOWEL PIN PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM BEING SHIFTED. THE SHIFT LEVER CAN THEN BE MOVED INTO THE PARK (P) POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION IS STILL IN THE LAST USED GEAR BEFORE DETACHMENT.
- Consequence: IF THE DRIVER LEAVES THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ENGAGING THE PARKING BRAKE, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VEHICLE CAN ROLL INJURE A PERSON IN ITS PATH OR CAUSE A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SHIFT CABLE AND REINSTALL IF NECESSARY FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 23, 2011. OWNER MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

I hope you and your kids are doing well! I'm glad to hear that you were able to find a great deal on a car that is both safe and reliable. It's great that the car still has 3 years/30,000 miles on the original warranty and that you have the lifetime dealership to rely on. I did some research and found that the car you chose is one of the safest on the market, which is fantastic news! It's always important to prioritize safety, especially when it comes to our loved ones. I hope the car continues to meet your expectations and please do check back in 6 months to let us know how it's going!

I recently purchased the base Optima with a 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. It's a fantastic car that offers great value for the money. I got it brand new last month (June 2009) for an amazing price of $10,995! The car had only 10 miles on it when I bought it, and now it has 300 miles. On my first tank of gas, I got 18 mpg, which is pretty good considering I mostly drove it in town and I'm still getting used to the manual transmission. I noticed a previous review mentioned that the passenger doors don't operate from the driver's side, but I found that turning the key once to the right unlocks the driver's door, and turning it twice unlocks all the doors. It's a small inconvenience for such an affordable and well-built car!
-
With the exceptions of the following - hard seats, blind spots, cheesy interior door handles, and misleading mpg - it is a great little car. If I had known then what I know now, I would have never traded my overly-dependable 1989 Oldsmobile 98 that delivered an honest 31 mpg and more comfort and mpg than Kia ever thought possible. The bottom line is that I like the car, but I loved my Oldsmobile!

I own a 2008 Optima. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after a 500-mile shake down cruise, I was hooked. I got 31 mpg when it was new. The only aftermarket addition was a K&N air filter. I got 50,000 miles out of the original tires and, believe it or not, the brakes! I have had no major problems with it, and it only sat once due to a dead battery. I remember the earlier models and all the problems associated with them, but this one is night and day! Way to go! I would highly recommend Kia to anyone looking for an inexpensive and durable car. By the way, mine has over 75,000 miles on it!
-
I've owned Hondas, Camrys, and other popular cars in the past, but this car is the best in terms of safety, price, and smooth riding. I absolutely love it! It's unfortunate that some people underestimate it because of the brand name, but it's actually very reliable, rides smoothly, and has excellent safety features such as a 5-star crash safety rating, 6 airbags, and double safety bars on doors. In terms of gas mileage, price, warranty, and safety, this car surpasses any Honda, Camry, or Nissan. I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new car. The warranty is unbeatable, and I even received free oil changes for 80K miles! :)

I've had my car for just over a year now. I bought it from my dad, who got it brand new in 2008. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of problems with it in the past year. First, it was the struts, sway bar links, and bushings. Then, the wheel bearing went out. Now, the newest issue is that my headlights keep burning out. I've had to replace the passenger one four times already, and at $25 per bulb for the H11B, it's getting quite expensive. I took it to the dealership, and they want me to spend a lot of money to replace the headlamp assembly. I've been doing some research, and it seems like this was a real issue in some of the older Optimas, especially the 2002 model. Oh, and when I had it in the shop to look at the headlight, they told me that the shift module needed to be replaced. At $700, I decided to pass. Needless to say, I'm not very impressed with all of these issues.

I took my car home but had to return it the next morning due to a bad alignment issue. It took around 6-8 days to fix, and I was informed that my car was at Nissan for the alignment machine. I was a bit surprised and asked why the Kia dealer didn't have the necessary equipment to support the warranty. The salesmen asked me if I knew how much it cost, but I wasn't too concerned about that. However, since I got my car back, it has been running great. I have driven it for 1800 miles now and even took my family to Bolxi, MS, and it performed well. The gas mileage is also great compared to my 6.0 L silverado. I was able to walk out the door with an LX model for $14,600 after receiving a $3000 cash back.

I'm 5'11, 265 lbs. This car offers plenty of room and a great many stock features which all work well. However, I do have some complaints. The pillars on the front windshield can be difficult to see around and I have removed the headrests because of visibility issues as well. The shift gate is an absolute nuisance when trying to go from

I purchased my car brand new in June '08 because of its safety features, including multiple airbags. However, I have since learned that there have been complaints about the airbags not deploying during an impact, which is concerning. Recently, my car has been cutting off while driving, and I have been told that it is due to using aftermarket oil filters. Despite switching to a Kia oil filter, the issue persists. This is a serious safety concern, especially since my 10-year-old son was in the car with me when it happened. I have been working with Wes and Bob at the Kia Service area in Myrtle Beach, SC, who have been very helpful, but the issue has not been resolved despite multiple visits. I am considering pursuing legal action under the Lemon Law to ensure my safety and that of my son. I urge someone higher up the ladder to step in and address this issue before someone gets hurt. I have dropped off my car at the Kia Service area again and will be checking on it tomorrow. I hope this issue can be resolved soon so that I can feel safe driving my car again.
