Common 2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500 problems
Common Problems with the Dodge Sprinter 3500 2006
- Limp Mode / Sprinter Losing Power
Limp mode is a safety feature in the Dodge Sprinter that protects the engine from damage. It may be activated if the engine is pushed to its limits. When the check engine light flashes on the dashboard, it indicates limp mode. The computer forces the owner to switch off the turbo to prevent worse scenarios. The limp mode is generally caused by EGR, faulty oxygen sensor, swirl flap motor, intercooler hoses leaking, actuator, resonator, etc. If the countdown on the dashboard reaches zero, the Sprinter will have to be towed to the dealer for a factory reset, which can be expensive.
- DEF Heater Failure
The main function of the DEF heater is to prevent the Diesel Emission Fluid from freezing. The heater on the emission fluid tank can burn out, causing the engine warning light to turn on. This problem is more noticeable in colder months when the liquid is more likely to freeze. The exchanging cost of DEF heater is $1,500.
- Turbo Resonator "Oil Leak" Air Leak
The original Sprinter Van Turbo Resonators are known to be problematic seals and O-Ring. Many call this symptom "Turbo leaking oil," but it is actually an Air Leak. The leak from the turbo output is probably due to a cracked or flattened or tearing O-Ring. If the air comes out through the sealing O-Ring, it is wrong. A small amount of oil within the air in the turbo is OK. But if this air comes out through the sealing O-Ring, it is wrong.
- Slow Sprinter
Many Dodge Sprinter owners have reported issues with slow acceleration. One owner reported that their 2005 Sprinter has no power, and they have changed three injectors, the injection pump, and the turbo hose. However, the problem persists, with very slow acceleration from 60 to 70 mph and difficulty going faster than 70 mph, especially up hills.
- Engine Issues
The Dodge Sprinter ranks 5th in reliability out of 30 Dodge models, with owners making 8 complaints over 6 model years, mostly about engine issues. The Sprinter is known for its engine problems, with many owners reporting issues with the engine, including burning oil at an alarming rate and dropping into limp mode from time to time.
- EGR Valve
The EGR valve is a common problem in the Dodge Sprinter. One owner reported that their 2005 Sprinter only indicates "erg bad," and when they step on the pedal, the power does not return. Unplugging the EGR valve can solve this problem, but the check engine light will come on.
- Takata Airbag Inflator Recall
The Takata airbag inflator recall is a significant issue affecting over 37 million vehicles, including the Dodge Sprinter. The defective airbag inflator is responsible for 23 deaths and hundreds of injuries, making it one of the largest and most dangerous recalls in automotive history.
- Auxiliary Diesel Fired Heater Failed
The auxiliary diesel fired heater is a common problem in the Dodge Sprinter. One owner reported that their 2009 Sprinter had this problem, which can be expensive to fix.
- Generator Regulator Failed
The generator regulator is a common problem in the Dodge Sprinter. One owner reported that their 2005 Sprinter had this problem, which can be expensive to fix.
- Lights
Lights are a common problem in the Dodge Sprinter. One owner reported that their 2005 Sprinter had this problem, which can be expensive to fix.
- Cooling System
The cooling system is a common problem in the Dodge Sprinter. One owner reported that their 2005 Sprinter had this problem, which can be expensive to fix.
In conclusion, the Dodge Sprinter 3500 2006 is known for its engine problems, including limp mode, DEF heater failure, and turbo resonator air leak. Other common problems include slow acceleration, EGR valve issues, Takata airbag inflator recall, auxiliary diesel fired heater failed, generator regulator failed, lights, and cooling system. These problems can be expensive to fix, and it is essential to address them promptly to prevent further damage to the vehicle.

ON INTERSTATES THIS WAS NOT TOO MUCH TROUBLE BUT I'M SURE WE WERE AN AGGRAVATION TO A FEW DRIVERS COMING OUR WAY. WE WENT TO A DODGE DEALER (CAMPED IN HIS DRIVEWAY) AND ASKED FOR TROUBLESHOOTING THE NEXT MORNING. THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM, BUT AGAIN, THE NEXT NIGHT, WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, BEFORE WE GOT HOME TO NW FLORIDA WHERE OUR LOCAL DEALER AGAIN FOUND NO PROBLEM. I THINK THERE IS AN INADEQUATE GROUND TO THE MAIN HEADLIGHT CIRCUIT. THERE ARE SEPARATE FUSES FOR THE HEADLIGHTS, RUNNING LIGHTS AND BRIGHT LIGHTS, ON EACH SIDE OF THE VEHICLE (6 IN ALL). THE FUSES ARE ALL ALRIGHT. WHEN I CHECK THE LIGHTS IN OUR DRIVEWAY THEY SEEM TO WORK FINE NOW.... *TR

- VIN: WDXPD944065
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: THIS 2006 WINNEBAGO NAVION (ON A SPRINTER 3500 CHASSIS) HAS SUFFERED TWO FAILURES OF THE TURBOCHARGER RESONATOR. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURS THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE AND ALMOST TOTAL LOSS OF POWER AND THE LOSS OF THE ABILITY TO CLIMB HILLS AS THE VEHICLE GOES INTO "LIMP HOME MODE" WITH A TOP SPEED OF 35 MPG ON LEVEL GROUND. THE VEHICLE IS UNABLE TO KEEP UP WITH OR STAY AHEAD OF, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY OF, OTHER TRAFFIC. THE FIRST FAILURE WAS INITIALLY NOT CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER, AND AFTER TWO ADDITIONAL INCIDENTS THE RESONATOR WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THE RESONATOR HAS TOTALLY FAILED A SECOND TIME AND THE DEALER HAS REFUSED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN DEFECT WITH THE SPRINTER THAT IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED BY DEALERS OR THE MANUFACTURER. THIS IS THE MOST UNRELIABLE AND UNSAFE VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED OR DRIVEN. I HAVE HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE, UNABLE TO GET TO A TURNOUT, AND STILL PARTIALLY BLOCKING AN ACTIVE LANE OF HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLES SHOULD BE RECALLED AND PROPERLY REPAIRED, OR THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BUY THEM BACK IF THEY ARE NOT REPAIRABLE. *TR

- VIN: WD0PD544X65
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: MY 2006 DODGE SPRINTER 3500 HAS JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THE TURBO RESONATOR FAILURE THAT WAS EXPECTED. IT WAS EXPECTED BE BECAUSE IT HAS NOW HAPPENED TO ALL THE SPRINTERS I OWN. THE VEHICLE SUFFERS A DRAMATIC LOSS OF POWER AND SPEED WITH NO WARNING. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND WHEN THE VAN IS ON AN UPGRADE AND SUDDENLY LOSES POWER AND SPEED. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS THE SPRINTER HAS BEEN OUT AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. IT IS A DANGER TO PUBLIC AND AN EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE REPAIR TO MAKE. AS FAR I AM CONCERNED, IT A FAILURE OF THE GOVERNMENT TO FORCE THE MANUFACTURER TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND REIMBURSE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PAID FOR IT IN THE PAST. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-06
- VIN: WDXPD944465
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I PURCHASED A 2006 DODGE SPRINTER 3500 AS A 2007 WINNEBAGO VIEW CLASS C MOTORHOME. IN ABOUT JANUARY OF 2008 I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND THE PLASTIC TURBO RESONATOR WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. ON JUNE 6, 2008 ON TRIP FROM TULSA TO FRISCO, TX AGAIN EXPERIENCED LOSS OF POWER AND ANOTHER PLASTIC TURBO RESONATOR WAS PLACED ON THE VEHICLE AT 4642 TOTAL MILES. HAVING HAD TWO FAILURES OF THIS RESONATOR WITHIN A YEAR AND UNDER 5000 MILES, I FILL THERE IS A SERIOUS DEFECT IN THE ORIGINAL RESONATOR AND THE IMPROVED ONE THAT ALSO FAILED. THE LAST FAILURE OCCURRED ON A TURNPIKE AND MY SPEEDS RANGED FROM 35 MPH UPHILL TO 55 MPH DOWNHILL. A VEHICLE GOING THAT SLOW AND BEING UNABLE TO ACCELERATE TO AVOID PROBLEMS IS A DEFINITE HAZARD TO US AND OTHER MOTORISTS. FROM WHAT I HEAR FROM DODGE DEALERS NO FIX TO THE PROBLEM IS ANTICIPATED. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-15
- VIN: WDXPD944065
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: 2006 DODGE SPRINTER 3500 TURBO RESONATOR FAILURES. MY WIFE AND I PURCHASED THE ABOVE UNIT IN THE FORM OF A WINNEBAGO VIEW. ON OUR FIRST TRIP WE HAD TO CROSS A SMALL MOUNTAIN PASS IN THE SHENANDHOAS. A FEW MINUTES IN TO THE CLIMB, I NOTICED THE POWER DROPPING OFF. WE WERE ALREADY ALL THE WAY IN THE RIGHT LANE, HOWEVER; THE VEHICLE LOST SO MUCH POWER THE LARGE TRUCKS ALSO IN THE RIGHT LANE HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD SUFFERED A FAILURE OF THE TURBO RESONATOR AND THAT IT WOULD BE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THE INCIDENT WAS MOST UNFORTUNATE. WHILE THE FAMILY TRIP WAS PRETTY MUCH RUINED, WINNEBAGO DID EVENTUALLY HELP PAY FOR THE RENTAL VEHICLE COSTS THAT WE HAD TO ABSORB TO GET THE FAMILY AND CONTENTS OF THE RV HOME UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVE SUFFERED AN IDENTICAL FAILURE. AFTER LOOKING IN TO THE PROBLEM ON-LINE, WE DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS A HUGE COMMUNITY OF SPRINT OWNERS THAT HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME FAILURE, MANY OF THEM WITH MULTIPLE FAILURES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH DODGE AND MERCEDES REFUSE TO RESOLVE. THE MANUFACTURERS NEED TO DESIGN A PERMANENT FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM AND ISSUE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-07
- VIN: WDXPD944565
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: REPEATED FAILURE OF TURBO RESONATOR ON DODGE SPRINTER 3500 / WINNABAGO VIEW RESULTING IN SUDDEN LOSS OF 90% OF POWER. PART CRACKS OPEN CAUSING LOSS OF TURBO PRESSURE. ENGINE SENSOR THINKS TURBO HAS FAILED SHUTTING DOWN ENGINE INTO LIMP MODE RESULTING IN 90% LOSS OF POWER. SAME PART HAS FAILED TWICE IN 2,500 MILES. BOTH TIMES HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATES HIGHWAYS IN TRAFFIC AND NEARLY RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT ON I 75 SOUTH OF ATLANTA LAST YEAR AND ON I 20 WEST OF ATLANTA LAST WEEKEND. IN BOTH CASES HIGH SPEED VEHICLES PASSING ON BOTH SIDES CREATED AN EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS. USER GROUPS REPORT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. DEALER HAS FIXED UNDER WARRANTY BUT REFUSES TO ALLOW KNOWN 3RD PART SOLUTION (DESCRIBED BELOW) THAT PERMANENTLY SOLVES THE PROBLEM TO BE USED AND THREATENS CANCELLATION OF ENTIRE VEHICLE WARRANTY IF PART IS INSTALLED. INSTEAD DEALER INSTALLS SAME PART THAT HAS A HISTORY OF REPEATED FAILURE AND SAYS "GOOD LUCK". THE PROBLEM IS WELL-KNOWN TO SPRINTER OWNERS. IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON USER BLOGS SUCH AS: HTTP://SPRINTER-SOURCE.COM/FORUM/FORUMDISPLAY.PHP?F=108, HTTP://AUTOS.GROUPS.YAHOO.COM/GROUP/SPRINTER/MESSAGE/94 HTTP://AUTOS.GROUPS.YAHOO.COM/GROUP/SPRINTER/MESSAGE/95 IT IS ALSO INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT ACCORDING TO THE JAMES F. RIORDAN COMPANY, INC, A LOCAL DODGE DEALER INITIATED AN EFFORT TO CREATE A "PERMANENT SOLUTION" TO THE PROBLEM, THE RESONATOR ELIMINATOR: HTTP://WWW.RIORDANCO.COM/OUR_PRODUCTS_CATALOG.HTM#SPRINTERTURBORESONATOR. *TR
FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-08-01
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
- Summary: MY 2006 SPRINTER DIESEL HAS HAD A RESONATOR FAILURE WHICH CAUSED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER - IF THIS HAD HAPPENED AT THE WRONG TIME IT COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY. THE FAILURE HAPPENED WITHIN A FEW THOUSAND MILES AND WAS REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER UNDER WARRANTY. HOWEVER, THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY RECALL THAT I AM AWARE OF AND AFTER A WEB SEARCH IT APPEARS THERE SHOULD BE - THE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE NOT AN IMPROVEMENT AND AS A RESULT THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED MORE THAN ONCE FOR MANY OWNERS. IT IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE GIVEN THE SUDDEN NATURE OF THE LOSS OF POWER AND THE POTENTIAL FOR IT TO HAPPEN WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC OR PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE ETC. *TR
2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500.
- Manufacturer: Daimler Vans USA, LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL
- Summary: Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans manufactured June 30, 2003, to August 31, 2006. The instrument cluster on the affected vehicles fails to illuminate the BRAKE warning lamp in the instrument cluster during the vehicle start up bulb-function check. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."
- Consequence: Without the BRAKE lamp illuminating during the vehicle start up bulb-function check, the driver has no confirmation that the lamp is working and therefore may not know whether or not the lamp will illuminate if the brake fluid level is low. If the operator is unaware that the vehicle has low brake fluid, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and DVUSA and Dodge dealers will correct the instrument cluster software, as necessary, free of charge. An interim notification was sent to owners on January 6, 2017. A second notice will be mailed to owners once the remedy becomes available. The recall began on July 27, 2017. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-770-705-2070.
- Manufacturer: Cummings Mobility Conversion & Supply
- Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
- Summary: Cummings Mobility Conversion & Supply (Cummings) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, Chevrolet Express, 2006-2008 Dodge Sprinter, and 2009-2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and 2013 Ford Transit Connect vehicles manufactured January 1, 2006, to October 8, 2014, equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation after January 1, 2006. The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.
- Consequence: If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.
- Remedy: Cummings will notify owners to take buses to a Ricon dealer or service center who will install supplemental platform support bumpers. Any platform that has already started cracking will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began January 13, 2015. Owners may contact Cumming's customer service at 1-800-639-5438 or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884. Cumming's number for this recall is 14E-041.
- Manufacturer: SPRINTER ENGINEERING & COMPLIANCE SUPPOR
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN
- Summary: SPRINTER IS RECALLING 10 MY 2001-2006 DODGE AND FREIGHTLINER 2500 AND 3500 VEHICLES. THE WELDING SEAM BETWEEN THE BRACKET AND STEERING COLUMN OF AFFECTED SPARE PARTS DOES NOT MEET DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS. THE RESULT OF AN OUT OF SPECIFICATION WELDING SEAM IS THAT THE STEERING COLUMN MAY DETACH FROM ITS INTERIOR VEHICLE MOUNTING BRACKET.
- Consequence: THE OPERATOR MAY LOSE STEERING ABILITY OF THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
