The Toyota Camry (/ˈkæmri/; Japanese: トヨタ・カムリ Toyota Kamuri) is an automobile sold internationally by the Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota since 1982, spanning multiple generations. Originally compact in size (narrow-body), the Camry has grown since the 1990s to fit the mid-size classification (wide-body)—although the two widths co-existed in that decade. Since the release of the wide-bodied versions, Camry has been extolled by Toyota as the firm's second "world car" after the Corolla. As of 2022, the Camry is positioned above the Corolla and below the Avalon or Crown in several markets.

In Japan, Camry was once exclusive to Toyota Corolla Store retail dealerships. Narrow-body cars also spawned a rebadged sibling in Japan, the Toyota Vista (トヨタ・ビスタ)—also introduced in 1982 and sold at Toyota Vista Store locations. Diesel fuel versions have previously retailed at Toyota Diesel Store. The Vista Ardeo was a wagon version of the Vista V50.

Etymology

The name "Camry" derives from the Japanese word kanmuri (ja:冠, かんむり), meaning "crown". This follows Toyota's naming tradition of using the crown name for primary models starting with the Toyota Crown (1955), continuing with the Toyota Corona (1957) and Corolla (1966); the Latin words for "crown" and "small crown", respectively. Maintaining this theme was the Toyota Tiara (1960) named after the "tiara" form of crown. The Atara trim level name used on the Camry in Australia since 2011 means "crown" in Hebrew. The rebadged Camry variant for Japan, the Toyota Scepter (1991)—took its name from "scepter", a royal accessory to a crown.

Negative 2013 Toyota Camry hybrid car reviews

  1. Jonas Walsh 2024-08-07

We confidently chose the hybrid option and paid a premium for it, as we keep our cars for a long time. We expected to reach the EPA estimate of mileage within 5 years, but after a year of driving, we are only averaging 34 MPG. Our driving has mostly been in the city, but we have noticed that we get above 40 MPG on the highway. Despite taking it back to the dealer a couple of times, they have assured us that there is nothing wrong with the car. We also contacted Toyota, who confirmed that 34 MPG is within the expected range and does not indicate a problem.

This car is certainly comfortable to drive and has great gas mileage. However, I have experienced some initial quality issues. In the past 3 months, I have had to take it back to the shop 5 times for various issues such as a defective speaker, a loose sunroof side garnish, a missing rear seat belt buckle, and a functionality problem with the JBL premium sound system. Although there is still an undiagnosed vertical grease smear on the right rear power window and the radio needs to be addressed, Toyota has been very helpful in addressing these issues. While it has been a bit of a hassle, I appreciate their efforts to resolve these problems.

Positive 2013 Toyota Camry hybrid car reviews

  1. Ned Harris 2025-02-20

Hi there! From what I can gather, it seems like you're really enjoying your car! I do agree that the front seats could be more supportive, but it's great to hear that the car is smooth and quiet. It's also impressive that you're getting such good gas mileage, especially in urban traffic. The tires sound like they're doing a great job too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the car.

  2. Frederik Wilkinson 2025-02-04

I recently purchased this vehicle with 155,000 miles and I must say, I'm impressed with how well the interior has held up. Despite the high mileage, the seats look almost new and all electrical items work perfectly. The bodywork is in good shape, although the headlights show some hazing, which is to be expected. As for the driving behavior, it's as expected - a little loose, but nothing to worry about. In August 2023, the car had 185,000 miles and my daughter has been using it. She absolutely loves this car! It's roomy, reliable, and gets great gas mileage. She's even achieved 50mpg on some journeys and is averaging just under 40mpg, which allows her to travel over 500 miles on one tank of gas.

  3. Solon Barrows 2025-01-15

During my test drive, I was amazed by the car's performance. We even drove up a steep hill, which most cars would struggle with, but this car had no problem at all. The gas mileage is also impressive. However, I did need to learn more about this car compared to my previous 2010 Camry Hybrid. The engine programming is different, and the dead stop take off requires a different approach. The air conditioning is also unique, with no tie-in to the engine, but it works great. One of my favourite features is the transmission braking, which makes stop-and-go driving much smoother. Another great benefit is that I can use the battery for 12 volts while camping, providing power for days on less than a gallon of gas. While camping, I even took the car up a very rough road and was surprised to find two 80-year-old ladies in identical cars who had beaten me to the bottom of the mountain! The car has held up well over the years, with no rattles or issues. In fact, I know more about the car than the dealerships do, so I don't let them touch it. I still get the mileage I want, around 40 MPG, and it's always a bit of a game to see how high I can get it. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and efficient vehicle.Hills are a plus for this hybrid. Keeping the tires a couple of pounds higher can help improve mileage. Unfortunately, rain can spoil the mileage. The electric drive solo shuts down at 40 miles per hour, but can take over at any speed on the 2012 version. However, I have seen electric drive even at 70 mph when the traction battery is at 100%. One unexpected item is that I have been hit with a powerful projectile (rock) at high speed, enough to almost cause a concussion. The windshield is unmarked, apparently because it is extra thick to add noise reduction - this is the XLE quiet windshield. -------------- 2017 update: I traded in the Camry HB XLE for an Avalon Hybrid Limited. I wish I could have waited for someone to buy it as it was a creme puff. Probably the best car I will ever have! However, the Avalon has way more goodies, such as radar, auto wipers, auto headlights with special light control, two electric seats with heat, and the same power - wow.

  4. Jabari O'Kon 2025-01-14

After driving over 40,000 local miles in 7 years, this car continues to be a reliable and solid choice. It has held up very well cosmetically, with the only issue being the ride, which can be uncomfortable on longer trips due to the hard seat bottom. However, I have heard that the newer models have a more compliant ride. My wife mainly drives this car around town and has been averaging 32 mpg after 28,000 miles, despite having a heavy foot on the gas. When I drive it on trips, I get even better mileage, over 40mpg. Despite being over 3 years old, it still feels, looks, and drives like new. As someone who is pretty tall and large (6'2

  5. Caden Lindgren 2025-01-01

Overall, the Camry has been a reliable and solid car for me. As a repeat Toyota hybrid drivetrain owner (two Camrys and two Priuses), I can attest to its dependability. It averages 36 mpg and has had no mechanical issues in its 120,000 miles, aside from routine maintenance and tire replacements. However, there are a few areas of concern. The side edges of the front bumper have repeatedly popped out, and the heating and air controls are small and difficult to operate. Additionally, the ultra suede cloth on the top-of-the-line XLE seats has worn poorly and is hard to clean, making the interior look shabby. Despite these minor design flaws, I have had no major issues with the car. Dealer maintenance costs are high, but I was able to get the 120,000 service done at a reputable non-Toyota shop for $200. As of the 2016 update, the car has 140,000 miles and has only needed two sets of tires, one horn, and one headlight replacement. It has been a trouble-free car and I highly recommend it.
