1994 Subaru Svx problems
The Subaru Alcyone SVX, marketed outside Japan as the Subaru SVX, is a two-door, front-engine, all- or front-wheel drive coupé manufactured and marketed by Subaru from 1991 to 1996 over a single generation.
Superseding the company's aviation-influenced XT range, the Alcyone SVX was Subaru's first entry into the luxury/performance market, and was noted for its aircraft-inspired 'window-within-a-window' side-glass configuration.
The nameplate "Alcyone" (pronounced "al-SIGH-uh-nee") refers to the brightest star in the Pleiades constellation, stylized in the Subaru company logo. The suffix "SVX" is an acronym for "Subaru Vehicle X".

Common 1994 Subaru Svx problems
The Subaru SVX, produced in 1994, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues, based on the search results:
- Wheel Bearing Failure: Another common problem with the Subaru SVX is wheel bearing failure. This issue can lead to noise and vibration while driving, and may require replacement of the wheel bearings to resolve.
- Warped Rotors: The SVX also suffers from warped rotors, which can cause the brakes to pulsate and vibrate, leading to an uncomfortable driving experience. This issue may require replacement of the rotors to correct.
- Power Surge and Electrical Problems: Some owners have reported power surges that result in the car not starting, blown fuses, and a horn that blares when attempting to restore power. These issues may be related to the electrical system and could require professional diagnosis and repair.
- Adverse Weather Conditions: The SVX is not well-suited for snow or adverse weather conditions, and may struggle to perform in these environments. Owners in areas with harsh winters may need to consider alternative vehicles for winter driving.
- Limited Space in the Back Seats: The SVX has limited space in the back seats, making it less practical for transporting passengers or large items. This may be a consideration for owners who need a vehicle with more cargo space.
- Turning Circle: The SVX has a larger turning circle than some other vehicles, which may make it less maneuverable in tight spaces. This may be a consideration for owners who need a vehicle with a smaller turning radius.
- Rust and Deterioration Over Time: The SVX may be prone to rust and mechanical deterioration over time, particularly in areas with harsh weather conditions or road salt. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent these issues from becoming major problems.
In summary, the Subaru SVX is known for several common problems, including transmission failure, wheel bearing failure, warped rotors, power surges and electrical issues, limited space in the back seats, a larger turning circle, and susceptibility to rust and mechanical deterioration. Owners should be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing, maintaining, and driving an SVX.
Why did the Subaru SVX fail?
It was the only available gearbox because Subaru didn't have a manual transmission that could effectively put up with the SVX without liquifying itself (via MotorTrend). A hefty price tag and somewhat weak transmission spelled sales disaster for Subaru. All told, the brand sold around 14,000 SVXs during its short life.
Is Subaru SVX a rare car?
In its production lifetime between 1991 and 1996, the Subaru SVX is reckoned to have sold 24,379 units — that's slightly more than the 23,400 examples of Citroën C6, with which I am very familiar.
What is the 0-60 on a 1994 Subaru SVX?
7.3 seconds
The sprint from 0-60 took an impressive 7.3 seconds and the aerodynamic SVX had a top speed above 150 mph. Performance was further enhanced by fully independent suspension and anti-lock brakes.
Is the SVX fast?
To dispel a common misconception, there were no modified turbo versions. The Turbocharged 4cyl belonged to the pre-American spec prototypes. With a four-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels, the SVX had a respectable 0-60 in just over seven seconds with a top speed of 143mph.

Why did Subaru stop making the SVX?
They simply weren't selling, so Subaru decided to scrap the name and car in favour of a better vehicle, the Subaru Ascent. In 2014, the last year the Tribeca was sold, only 732 models were sold. A lot lower of a number compared to the 18,614 sold in 2007.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-08-19
- VIN: JF1CX3358RK
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY SUBARU SVX TRANSMISSION RECENTLY STARTED SUFFERING A DELAY WHEN SHIFTING GEARS, HIGH REVS AND SLIPPING WHILE SHIFTING AND JUST NOW I TRIED TO DRIVE IT AND A CLUNKING SOUND HAPPENED WHEN PUTTING THE CAR IN REVERSE. NOW IT WON'T GO IN TO REVERSE AT ALL, ALSO, 1ST GEAR DOESN'T WORK HALF THE TIME AND THE REST OF THE FORWARD GEARS SEEM TO SLIP SEVERELY MOST OF THE TIME TOO. THE CAR HAS LOW MILEAGE, AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH IT BEFORE. TROUBLE STARTED MAYBE A FEW DAYS AGO.. THE HEAT TRANSMISSION INSTALLED IN THE SUBARU SVX AND LEGACY MODELS SUFFER FROM A SEVERE COOLING PROBLEM. THE RADIATOR BASED TRANSMISSION COOLER CAN NOT COOL THE TRANSMISSION FLUID COOL ENOUGH. THE TRANSMISSIONS POOR DESIGN DOES NOT ALLOW THE LUBRICANT TO FLOW THROUGH IT TO KEEP PARTS LUBRICATED(THUS MORE FRICTION AND HEAT DAMAGE). UNUSUAL HIGH OVERDRIVE PLACES ADDITIONAL SIDE LOADS ON BEARINGS GENERATING HEAT. THE ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE SYSTEM PUTS EVEN MORE STRAIN ON THE TRANSMISSION CAUSING EVEN MORE HEAT. THIS PROBLEM IS OF EPIDEMIC PROPORTION SO COMMON AMONG OVER 90% OF THESE CARS MANUFACTURED. SUBARU IS AWARE OF THE MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING DEFECTS IN THE TRANSMISSIONS FOR ALL SVX MODELS. ALMOST ALL SVX OWNERS, EVERY WEBSITE, AND EVEN YOUR OWN COMPLAINT FILES ARE AWARE OF THIS MAJOR DEFECT AND SPECIFIC PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS. SUBARU HAS DONE NOTHING IF ANYTHING TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD AND THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS ABOUT IT. AT THE VERY LEAST I NEED SUBARU TO REPLACE MY DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION WITH A NEW ONE UPGRADED WITH HIGH CLUTCH DRUM AND THRUST BEARINGS, NEW REVERSE CLUTCH STEEL PLATES, MODIFIED TRANSMISSION CASE, OIL PUMP GASKET AND TRANSFER CLUTCH DRIVEN PLATE, A TRANSMISSION OIL FILTER KIT AND AN AFTER TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER AND WARRANTY IT. THIS CAR IS TOO EXPENSIVE TO FIX THE DAMAGE FROM THEIR DEFECTIVE DESIGN AND UNUSUALLY HIGH COST COMPARED TO OTHER TRANSMISSIONS. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-08-04
- VIN: JF1CX3457RK
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: STARTED OUT AS 3RD AND 4TH SLIPPING, AND AFTER BABYING IT FOR A WEEK OF GOING TO WORK AND BACK HOME IT WILL NO LONGER HOLD 3RD OR 4TH. AFTER DOING RESEARCH IT HAS BEEN FOUND THAT THE 4EAT HAS ABOUT AS MUCH ISSUES AS THE PINTO (WITHOUT THE EXPLODING). EVERY OWNER OF THE SVX AND A 4EAT HAS SUFFERED THIS IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER. THE LEGACY'S WERE RECALLED AND REPAIRED, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SVX? FOR A $30-$40K MSRP FROM THE DEALER, YOU WOULD ASSUME THEY WOULD TREAT THESE CARS WITH A BIT MORE CLASS IN THIS SITUATION. TOP IT ALL OFF, I ONLY HAVE 58K MILES ON MY 94. *NM

- Summary: THE FOLLOWING LETTER HAS BEEN SENT TO SUBARU OF AMERICA.... THIS LETTER IS SENT ON THE BEHALF OF THE MANY OWNERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE FAILURES OF THE 4EAT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN THE SUBARU SVX. IT IS EVIDENT THAT THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE TRANSMISSION THAT CAUSES THE PREMATURE FAILURES FOR ALL MODEL YEARS. THESE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED IN CARS WITH VERY LOW MILEAGE AND CONTINUED TO OCCUR THEREAFTER. REPAIR AND/OR REPLACMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION IS VERY EXPENSIVE, COSTING APPROXIMATELY AND, AS OF THIS DATE, THERE HAS BEEN NO SUPPORT FROM SUBARU. UNDERSTANDABLY, THE OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE BECOME QUITE ANGRY AT SUBARU'S LACK OF RESPONSE OR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT A PROBLEM EVEN EXISTS, AND HAVE CONSULTED LEGAL COUNSEL REGARDING A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. TO AVOID AN UNPLEASANT AND HOSTILE SITUATION, AND IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN GOOD RELATIONS WITH THE OWNERS OF YOUR CARS, THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS ARE DEMANDED: 1. SUBARU RECALLS AND REPLACES THE TRANSMISSIONS FOR ALL MODEL YEARS 2. EXTENDS THE TRANSMISSION WARRANTY TO 100,000 MILES FOR ALL MODEL YEARS UNLESS A WRITTEN RESPONSE IS RECEIVED WITHIN 30 DAYS, LITIGATION WILL BE INSTITUTED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANTICIPATED COURTESY AND COOPERATION. *AK
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- Summary: TRANSMISSION GOING TO FAIL VERY SOON -- I HAVE CONSTANT AND SEVERE TRANSMISSION BINDING WHEN I MAKE A TURN FROM A 0 - 5 MPH START. THE TRANSMISSION IS SELF-DESTRUCTING. I'VE BEEN TOLD THEY HAVE INSUFFICIENT FILTRATION AND COOLING BY SEVERAL SUBARU TECHNICIANS. A DESIGN FLAW IF YOU ASK ME. WHY IS IT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE LAGACY ALREADY ( SAME 4EAT TRANSMISSION) BUT NOT FOR THE SVX ?!?!?! $2,000 FIXES DO NOT EXACTLY FIT INTO MY BUDGET. NOT TRYING TO BE DISRESPECTFUL -- JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY US SVX OWNERS ARE BEING BASICALLY "IGNORED". *AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-03-27
- VIN: JF1CX3554RH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE SUBARU SVX BECAUSE OF BAD ENGINEERING OF THE TRANSMISSION HAS AN ALARMINGLY HIGH FAILURE RATE. DRIVERS OF THESE CARS ARE ALMOST GUARANTEED A FAILURE, AND MANY TIMES 3 OR 4.THESE TRANSMISSIONS COSTING UPWARDS OF $2500 FOR PARTS AND $1000 FOR LABOR WOULD REALLY HURT THE BUYERS WHO HAD NO IDEA OF THE TROUBLES INVOLVED IN OWNING ONE. I WILL BE WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION FOR 10 DAYS AS MY DEALER HAS TOLD ME IN FEAR THAT IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN I WILL LOSE MY JOB AS WELL AS HAVE TO SHELL OUT ABOUT 4,000 EACH TIME THE TRANSMISSION FAILS. I REPEAT THAT THIS IS DUE TO A BADLY ENGINEERED TRANSMISSION THAT WAS DESIGNED TOO WEAK IN STRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THE POWER THAT THE ENGINE SUPPLIES. SUBARU AT THIS POINT HAS TAKEN NO ACTION TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION THAT IS AFFECTING ITS OWNERS SO DEEPLY. I MAKE PAYMENTS ON THIS CAR AND CANNOT AFFORD AN ADDITIONAL 4000 ON TOP OF THE MONTHLY PAYMENTS AND TAX AND FEAR I WILL HAVE TO SELL THIS CAR BECAUSE IT IS TO EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN. *AK

Hey there! That's great to hear!

I've had this car for almost 5 years now. When I bought it, it had 80k miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to get the transmission fixed twice, but thankfully it was under warranty. I also had some issues with the front rotors warping, but I was able to improve the situation by getting some aftermarket 'low heat' pads and turning the rotors. I did have a couple of instances where the power steering hoses popped off, but overall I still enjoy driving this car.

I received the car in March of 2009 from my sister-in-law who had purchased it new in Tucson. The car had 86K miles on it and the transmission had been rebuilt around 75K. Despite its age, the car was in exceptional condition, having led a very sheltered life. Within a week of receiving it, a Ferrari driver complimented it at a stoplight. In July, I took the car on a 3700 mile loop through Texas and New Mexico, where it never missed a beat and averaged 28 mpg for the trip. Driving it through mountain twisties is an absolute blast. The car has never let me down, but finding a quality mechanic is of utmost importance. Fortunately, I found one here in Scottsdale who loves the car and is honest as the day is long.

What a great car! It's been a reliable ride for me, even after driving it for 15k miles since I bought it at 114k miles. The only thing I've had to replace is the water pump. The AWD makes for amazing cornering and it's incredibly comfortable - even more so than my Infiniti. Every time I drive it, people try to race me and I usually come out on top, but win or lose, I always get a thumbs up or some other sign of appreciation. It's a very sturdy car too. Before I bought it, it was hit by an H2 Hummer in a parking lot and repaired, and then less than two weeks after I bought it, it was hit again on the same corner (front right) by a big white work van. Despite bending the fender off the tire, the car drove perfectly straight. I even hit a rock big enough to break my rim on the same front right tire, but there was no real damage. Overall, I'm really happy with this car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 2012 from the first owner who took great care of it. It only had 20,000 miles on it at the time, and now it has 41,000 miles. I absolutely adore the design, power, and handling of this car. However, I did notice that the transmission can be a bit of a weak point. After doing some research on SVX forums, I decided to install a transmission filter and cooler, and use synthetic fluid. Since then, I haven't had any issues with it at all. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you're considering buying a 1992-93 model. Make sure to check for the filter and have a trusted mechanic inspect the transmission. Overall, I really love this car!
