Subaru Outback 2020 problems
The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).
Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.
History
The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.
Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.
The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.
When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

Common Subaru Outback 2020 problems
The 2020 Subaru Outback has been lauded for its comfortable and spacious interior, smooth ride, and ample storage space. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.
One of the most widespread issues reported by owners is excessive battery drain. This problem is particularly prevalent in newer vehicles with a lot of electronic accessories, which can sometimes drain the battery while it's parked. Diagnosing the source of the battery drain can cost around $75, while fixing it can range from $5 to $150.
Another common problem reported by 2020 Subaru Outback owners is a broken windshield, particularly in the first 5,000 miles. This issue is attributed to a production run that had bad glass, which is more susceptible to chipping with small rocks. Replacing the windshield can cost around $700, depending on local labor rates.
The touch screen freezing is also a problem reported by some Subaru Outback models at around 3,000 miles. While there are software updates available for the infotainment system that improve its reliability, some dealerships may charge around $50 for installation.
In addition to these issues, there are five recalls on the 2020 Subaru Outback, including recalls for the drive chain breaking, which can lead to a loss of power, and the fuel pump. Subaru will replace the transmission on models with signs of chain damage for free, while other recalls cover the rearview camera.
It's worth noting that while these problems can be frustrating, they are relatively minor compared to some other SUVs on the market, leading to lower ownership costs as the vehicle ages. A well-maintained 2020 Subaru Outback can last around 250,000 miles, which is around 50,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $538 per year.
Some owners have also reported issues with the sunroof slide button feeling loose and cheap, as well as turn signal, headlight, and wiper levers and switches feeling cheaply made for a 40,000 dollar car.
Consumer Reports has also received complaints about the infotainment system, including the screen display freezing, radio not working, and navigation system issues.
In summary, while the 2020 Subaru Outback is a comfortable and spacious SUV with ample storage space, it does have its share of common problems. These include excessive battery drain, a broken windshield, touch screen freezing, recalls for the drive chain breaking and fuel pump, and issues with the infotainment system. However, these problems are relatively minor compared to some other SUVs on the market, leading to lower ownership costs as the vehicle ages.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-17
- VIN: 4S4BTANC2L3
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The Thermal control valve went out in May while I was traveling though Texas, I took it to a dealership right away to see what the issue was and was told once again it was the thermal control valve. When it goes out you have the check engine light come on, the eyesite, and cameras all stop working along with all The warning lights staying on. They replaced it and I was told I should most likely get a refund for when I had the part first replace in July 2021. Which at that time my car was only 7 months old. I was told I would get a reimbursement for that part. However ever since Subaru warranty sent me an approval for reimbursement of this service ( letter dated May 21, 2024 for $1071. 00 that should happen in 30 -45 days, they are now stalling and stating it will be 90 days for checks to be mailed out. This is a faulty part they knew it 3 years ago and failed to handle, now more and more vehicle owners are having the issue, so they will replace the part ONLY if you have any issues. This is fraud on the part of Subaru to their customers.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
- VIN: 4S4BTACC6L3
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: This is a safety issue regarding the durability of windshields. I have had 2 incidents now with my 2020 subaru outback having a cracked windshield. Both times it came on suddenly with at least a foot long crack or more the first time and an 18 inch crack the second time just recently. I reported the incident to the service manager this time and he put me in touch with customer advocacy at subaru who is waiting for a report from the diagnosis on Monday, July 22. The first crack was in March 2024. Prior to the crack happening, I noticed a drip of dried substance running down the inside of my windshield from the top of the windshield. I thought it must be sealant and was going to contact subaru. However, without warning, I pulled out of my garage one morning to find a crack across the driver side of the windshield at least a foot or longer. There had been no incident of any rock hitting my windshield that I noticed and there was no damage to the paint on frame close to where the crack started which was on the outer edge of the windshield. The crack grew larger and crossed over the driver's visibility. I asked if there had been a recall since I thought this was odd and spontaneous but there was none. The service repair person said if a rock chip occurs in the defroster area in the perimeter of the windshield, the windshield will sustain a long crack. So I believed that something like that must have happened in my lack of knowledge of prior issues with subaru windshields. I had a $1000 deductible on my insurance and the repair was over that. Subaru refused to negotiate with State Farm to reduce the price so I paid the entire amount out of pocket. The second crack occurred while I was driving in the rain. I turned off my wipers to find an 18 inch long crack on the passenger side of the windshield starting at outer edge of glass. No incident of a rock chip, no damage to paint on frame.

The battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact also stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds, the driver's side seat moved forward and backward unexpectedly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000. The VIN was not available.
POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-29
- VIN: 4S4BTANC5L3
- Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On [XXX], I was driving east on [XXX] on the North side of Toledo Ohio close to the intersection with [XXX] . The "Check Engine" warning came on, all the vehicle "Eyesight" functions were automatically turned off, and Pre collision braking and Pre collision throttle control features were activated. There was no danger of a collision at this time, but all of this left me stranded in the middle of this busy four lane highway. I was able to literally crawl to the shoulder of the road. I was not hit, but it was just good fortune that prevented that. This is where my safety was at greatest risk. After about 10 minutes during which I started and stopped the car numerous times, the pre collision braking and throttle were deactivated and I was able to drive the car. I located the nearest Subaru dealer (Yark Subaru Toledo, Ohio) and drove there. The cause of the Check Engine light was diagnosed as a failure of the Thermal Control Valve. I had received a letter from Subaru dated May 1, 2024 stating that this part might fail and extending the warranty for this part. That letter specifically stated that nothing needed to be done until the part failed. There was no mention of the fact that the car would be disabled when it happened. Part was eventually replace on July 1, 2024 two days later. Since then I have spoken to 3 people at Subaru of America seeking to understand why a Check Engine situation caused the vehicle to be disabled. I also asked the Service Advisor at Yark Subaru to explain. They have all been friendly and attentive, but they cannot or will not give an explanation. My main concern is that a Check Engine situation may cause this Pre Collision shut down to happen again. Based on the danger I was in when this happed, I think that there should have been a recall and the Thermal Control Valve replaced before failure. To be clear, the repairs were completed under warranty and Subaru has sent me a $350.00 coupon for future service. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the front windshield unexpectedly shattered. There was no impact to the windshield that could have caused the windshield to shatter. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who suggested that the contact file a claim with the insurance company to replace the front windshield. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
- VIN: 4S4BTANC2L3
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: Hi: When I was driving yesterday, the engine warning light and brake warning light both turned on. The car was like frozen on the road cannot be moved no matter how to press the gas pedal. The police helped to call tow and move my car out of the road. The tow driver left my car at a flat parking lot. On the lot, when I tried to restart my car, the car started to shake side to side and up and down. I can feel some part is dislocated and one piece of heavy thing was swaying in the car. The engine warning light was on for two times during the last two years. First time when I sent the car to the dealership, they performed the check and fixed it by free. The customer service person told me the problem is the sensor failing and the fixing was free. So, I guess it is the system defect and the manufacture already knew it. So the repairing was free. However, with one year, the situation happened again. The second time I sent the car for fixing, the service person told me it was the same problem of sensor failing but they charged me around two hundreds dollar for the second time fixing. Yesterday, the same situation happened again with the brake warning light on at the same time. It is almost another one year after the second time I sent car for repairing. My most concern is the car completely suddenly stopped during the driving. If I was on the highway, serious collision may happen and I am already passed away.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-02
- VIN: 4S4BTANC7L3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Rear trunk door won’t lock when closed and open up while driving. It’s unsafe as I have to constantly keep an eye in rear view mirror to see if door popped open by itself. Took to service station and they said it’s tied to battery and it is preventing door to close because trunk door takes power to open. I do not understand how trunk door locking close cannot be independent of battery. It is quite unsafe for vehicle occupants and poses danger to other vehicles driving behind.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: 4S4BTALC3L3
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: I have a occupancy sensor error which has turned off the airbags on the passenger seat. I looked up the issue and found an open recall with Subaru regarding this issue. I spoke with multiple case managers to resolve the issue. They said they have reported the issue to NHTSA but it is not an active recall because they have yet to find a solution. So they have no responsibility to fix the issue at this time. They are unwilling to provide me with an alternate option than driving my car with the exact issue they issued the recall for.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

Negative Subaru Outback 2020 car reviews
Positive Subaru Outback 2020 car reviews

I recently traded my 2016 3.6r for a 2020 touring xt and I must say, I'm really impressed with this car! It has so many features and luxurious touches that rival those of premium brands, but at a much more affordable price point. The driving experience is also fantastic - it handles beautifully and is a joy to drive. However, there are a couple of minor drawbacks that I've noticed. Firstly, the auto stop/start feature can be a bit of a pain, as any gas savings are quickly eaten up by the battery and starter. I've found a workaround that works for me though - as I come to a stop, I pop the car into neutral, then back into drive, which prevents the engine from shutting off. Secondly, the driver recognition system can be a bit finicky - if it doesn't recognize you, your radio settings will default to treble/bass. However, I've found that turning the system off and setting my preferred default works well enough for me. Overall, I'm really happy with this car and would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new vehicle. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could!

I'm glad to hear that you decided to upgrade to the Onyx XT from your 2011 Outback 2.5. The turbo sounds amazing and I'm happy to hear that the ride is much better. The interior sounds very impressive as well. I understand that the infotainment system may be a little slow and difficult to navigate at times, but it's great to hear that the rest of the car is so good that it overrides these minor issues.

The ride is excellent, with very smooth acceleration and comfortable features. The car is very spacious and convenient, making it a comfortable ride for both short and long trips. However, some users have complained about the auto-stop feature at red lights, but this can be turned off if you experience delays or traffic. The lane-keeping function is not yet ready for prime time, so it's best not to rely on it. Overall, the car is not the most exciting, but it ranks well in the luxury class. The gadgets are a good and bad feature, with some users finding the automatic Bluetooth feature to be inconvenient. However, this can be turned off if desired. This is a roomy and comfortable car that is perfect for those looking for a smooth and enjoyable ride.

I bought the 2020 Limited 2.5L Non-turbo and I am very pleased with it. The fit, finish, assembly, and overall quality are all excellent. The car is quiet and the front seats are comfortable. I believe it will hold its value better than some of its competitors. I have also been very happy with the customer support and appreciation that Subaru has shown me for choosing their product.

I have some complaints that need to be emphasized. The auto stop/start feature is more than annoying and cannot be permanently disabled, which is close to being unacceptable. The driver interface for all the controls is too complex and dangerous. The lane departure system is overly sensitive and cannot anticipate if you're on a curved road, which is unacceptable. Despite these issues, the car is great. However, I will be trading it in shortly.

During COVID-19, it can be challenging to become familiar with and use all of the safety features comfortably. It's not always simple or intuitive. However, one thing is for sure: if you enjoy driving on winding mountain roads, remember to turn off lane assist!

I am a proud owner of two Outbacks, and I must say that my experience with the 2017 Limited 2.5 Outback was exceptional. When my lease expired, I decided to go for the 2020 Limited Outback, expecting the same level of satisfaction. However, I was disappointed with some of the features. The Auto Start Stop feature is quite annoying, and the process of turning it off is cumbersome. The large screen with low-quality graphics is also unresponsive and buggy. The sensors are not as helpful as they were in my previous Outback, and the entire car computer experience is slow. Despite these issues, I still find the car useful for my daily commute. Subaru must fix these issues, or I will buy something else when my lease is up. It is important to do your homework before considering buying this car. I made the mistake of not researching or testing the car, assuming it would be better than the previous version. However, I was wrong.

I noticed that the Outback Starlink 11.6 multimedia console was a bit too large and complicated to use while driving, so I decided to go with the Forester 8.0” Starlink multimedia system instead. Additionally, I found that the driver seat in the Outback was much lower than the driver’s seat in the Forester, and it wasn't as comfortable due to the flat, less padded cushion. Therefore, I ended up purchasing a well-equipped Forester Premium instead.

The 2020 Outback Touring, touted as the most reliable Outback ever, unfortunately did not meet the expectations of the writer. Despite having traded in a 2018 Outback Touring with 111,000 miles, the new car experienced hesitation issues and a drop in fuel mileage at high speeds. Despite multiple attempts to fix the issue, including replacing the ignition coils and checking the fuel system and transmission pressure, the issue persisted. The writer's car was in the shop for 40 days over 2 months, and Subaru ultimately decided to repurchase the car under the Lemon Law. It is clear that the writer's experience was not satisfactory, and it is important for car manufacturers to ensure that their products meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.
