Common 1978 Ford Pinto problems
Based on the information provided in the sources, here are some common problems reported by owners of the Ford Pinto in 1978:
- Door Jamming: Another common problem reported by owners was the tendency of the doors to jam shut after an impact. In the event of a collision, this issue could trap occupants inside the vehicle, making it difficult for them to escape if a fire broke out. The combination of door jamming and the fuel tank vulnerability heightened the risks associated with driving the Ford Pinto.
- Safety Concerns: The Ford Pinto faced criticism for its overall safety record, especially in rear impact collisions. While the car's safety performance in terms of fire incidents was considered average for its class, the specific issue of fire fatalities in rear impacts was a cause for concern. This highlighted a particular vulnerability in the Pinto's design that put occupants at risk in certain types of accidents.
- Recall History: Despite initial resistance to a recall, Ford eventually issued a recall in 1978 affecting approximately 1.5 million Pintos with model years from 1971 to 1976. This recall was a response to the safety issues identified with the Pinto, including the fuel tank vulnerability and other design flaws that posed risks to drivers and passengers. The recall was a significant acknowledgment of the car's problems and aimed to address the safety concerns associated with the Ford Pinto.
These common problems with the Ford Pinto in 1978 reflect serious safety issues that plagued the vehicle and led to its reputation as one of the most dangerous cars ever built. The combination of design flaws, safety concerns, and the tragic incidents associated with the Pinto underscored the importance of prioritizing safety in automobile manufacturing to protect consumers from harm.

What were the design flaws of the Ford Pinto?
Iacocca's specifications for the design of the car were uncompromising: "The Pinto was not to weigh an ounce over 2,000 pounds and not cost a cent over $2,000." During design and production, however, crash tests revealed a serious defect in the gas tank. In crashes over 25 miles per hour, the gas tank always ruptured.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-07-29
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE PLASTIC PANELS ON THE BACK OF THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS DETERIORATING AND CRUMBLING WITH HEAT AND AGE ON 3 CARS. THESE WERE A 1976 FORD PINTO WAGON, A 1976 FORD E250 CLUB WAGON VAN, AND A 1972 AMC MATADOR (APPEARENTLY THE SAME FORD DESIGN OF THIS PART). THIS PART HOLDS THE CONNECTORS AND COMPONENTS ONTO THE PLASTIC RIBBON THAT CARRIES THE WIRING. I FOUND THAT THIS CAUSES LOOSE CONNECTIONS AND I BELIEVE THAT IT COULD START A FIRE, IN ADDITION TO THE INSTRUMENTION NOT WORKING. I HAVE ALSO HEARD OF THIS SAME PROBLEM FROM SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE IN FORD VEHICLES. IT SEEMS TO BECOME APPEARANT WHEN THEY ARE OVER ABOUT 10 YEARS OLD.*AK
