1996 Chevrolet Corsica problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Corsica (named after Corsica, France) is a front-wheel drive compact car that was produced by Chevrolet from 1987 until 1996. The Corsica was built upon the L-body platform. It shared the L-body with the 2-door Beretta, and the rebadged revival of the Pontiac Tempest which was essentially the same car, but was only sold in Canada. The Corsica came in two styles and four trims. Sold initially only as a 4-door sedan, it was also available as a 5-door hatchback from model years 1989 until 1991. Corsicas were built alongside the Beretta by both the Wilmington Assembly in Delaware and Linden Assembly in New Jersey.

Year-to-year changes

1987–1989

The Corsica was first sold as a fleet car to rental agencies and large companies in 1987, prior to mainstream release. The Corsica and Beretta were the second best-selling passenger cars in America in calendar year 1988, right behind the Ford Escort. Much of the suspension components were borrowed from the J-body Chevrolet Cavalier, and the chassis was an extension of that of the J-body, but modeled with similar proportions to the N-body. The L-body platform however, was engineered by Chevrolet rather than Oldsmobile. The car was equipped with either the 2.0 L TBI OHV I4 from the Cavalier, or the 2.8 L MPFI OHV V6 from the Chevrolet Celebrity. The base Corsica's door handles were colored silver, while the Corsica LT/LTZ had black-colored handles. Some earlier models had a column shifter with a handbrake between the front seats, an uncommon configuration for most compact cars of the time. A 5-door hatchback model was introduced for 1989, as was an LTZ performance package that included many suspension parts from the Beretta. A rare XT trim included all the performance parts from the LTZ trim as well as a leather interior, special body kit and spoiler package designed for GM by a third party supplier.

1990

The base model Corsica was dropped, leaving the LT and LTZ. Both engines offered were increased in displacement. The Corsica now either used the same 2.2 L 4-cylinder engine and 3-speed automatic transmission as the Cavalier, or the 3.1 L V6 and 3-speed automatic from the Lumina. Minor changes were made to the interior, mostly around the driver controls.

  • Brake Issues: Brake problems, such as the brakes not releasing or the brake lights not working, have been reported by some Corsica owners. These issues can be caused by wear and tear or a lack of maintenance. Symptoms include difficulty stopping the car or the brake lights not functioning properly.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks have been reported by some Corsica owners, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty oil pan or a cracked engine block. Symptoms include the engine running low on oil or the presence of oil on the ground where the car is parked.
  • Performance Issues: Performance issues, such as poor acceleration or a rough idle, have been reported by some Corsica owners. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty fuel injector or a dirty air filter. Symptoms include difficulty accelerating or the engine running roughly.
  • Suspension Problems: Suspension issues, such as a worn-out shock absorber or a damaged spring, have been reported by some Corsica owners. These issues can be caused by wear and tear or a lack of maintenance. Symptoms include a rough ride or difficulty steering.

In conclusion, while the Chevrolet Corsica has been a popular car due to its affordability and practicality, it has been subject to various issues, including ignition coil/crankshaft position sensor failure, fuel pump replacement, high idle issues, electrical problems, transmission issues, coolant leaks, brake issues, oil leaks, performance issues, and suspension problems. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues and ensure the longevity of the car.

I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER CORSICA CARS AROUND TOWN THAT SEEMED TO HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. I DIDN'T KNOW THE EXACT DATE BUT IT STARTED RUSTING MORE RECENTLY. THE PAINT FAILED FROM THE HOOD TO THE TRUNK. SERVICE BRAKES, AIR PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-02-06
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1G1LD55M0TY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, AIR
  • Summary: (1) FOR OVER A YEAR NOW MY ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ON 1998 CHEVROLET CORSICA HAVE FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN RAINY WET CONDITIONS. I CANNOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE WHEN RAINY OR WET. THE BRAKES CATCH AND RELEASE REPEATEDLY EVENTUALLY CAUSING THE CAR TO SLIDE (THIS EVEN HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING 10 MPH). AFTER THE FIRST 15 STOPS IT WILL EVENTUALLY BEGIN TO STOP WITHOUT DOING THIS. BUT IN THE CASE OF THE ACCIDENT I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR 30 MINUTES AND THE CAR FAILED TO STOP. (2) I WAS DRIVING 20 MPH WITH 3-4 CAR LENGTHS BETWEEN MYSELF AND CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE BRAKES DID NOT STOP IN TIME. I HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. (3) I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER ON 3 OCCASSIONS FOR THIS PROBLEM. THEY KEEP TELLING ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. THEY SAY THAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. IF THAT WERE THE CASE, WE WOULD ALL BE DEAD. THE FIRST 3 YEARS THAT I HAD THE VEHICLE IT DID NOT DO THIS, SO OBVIOUSLY THIS IS NOT WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO. I EVEN HAD THE DEALERSHIP SIGN A PAPER STATING THAT HE COULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, SO THAT I WILL HAVE WHEN I DO HAVE TO HANDLE THIS IN A LEGAL MANNER. AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND EXPERIENCING THE BRAKE FAILURE, MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THE BRAKES ARE DANGEROUS BUT THAT HE CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM WHEN HE TAKES THEM APART. THEREFORE HE CANNOT FIX IT.*AK

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-12-15
  • VIN: 1G12D55M8TY
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR, INCLUDING THE HEATING AND ELECTICAL SYSTEMS(ALTERNATOR, RADIO, ETC.)AND THE TRANSMISSION. THE MAIN ONE AT THIS POINT IS THE PEELING PAINT. THE CAR IS A VERY NICE MEDIUM BLUE, BUT IT LOOKS TERRIBLE DUE TO THE SPOTS OF GRAY WHERE THE PAINT JUST BUBBLED UP AND FLAKED OFF, VERY MUCH LIKE IT GOT A SUNBURN. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER IN OCTOBER 2000 FOR SOME WORK ON THE ALIGNMENT AND ASKED TO HAVE RESEARCHED WHETHER THERE WAS A POLICY ON FIXING THE PAINT, WHICH HAD ALREADY BEGUN PEELING OFF. HE TOLD ME HE WOULD LOOK INTO IT AND TOOK THE VIN NUMBER. ABOUT A WEEK LATER, THE TRANSMISSION BROKE AND I BECAME ABSORBED IN FIXING THAT PROBLEM, SO THE PAINT PROBLEM BECAME SECONDARY. SINCE I NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THAT DEALER, I CONTACTED ANOTHER ONE AND WAS TOLD RIGHT OFF THAT THERE WAS NO POLICY CONCERNING MY CAR, AND SUGGESTED THE PAINT WAS DAMAGED BY RAIN OR BIRD DROPPINGS. THE PROBLEM HAS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE. I HAVE ANOTHER BLUE CHEVY, A 1990 CAVALIER, WHICH HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO THE SAME SUN AND RAIN AS THE CORSICA, AND IT HAS YET TO FLAKE ITS' PAINT. NOW I HEAR THAT GM HAD A 6/5 YEAR POLICY, BUT NOW THAT I HAVE FOUND OUT ABOUT IT, MY CAR IS TOO OLD. I AM VERY FRUSTRATED AND AM LOOKING FOR HELP.

  • Summary: MY MAIN CONCERN IS THE PAINT AND THE AIRCONDITIONING. THE PAINT BEGAN TO PEEL RIGHT AFTER I BOUGHT IT AND I WAS NOT AWARE OF A RECALL AND COULDN'T AFFORD TO HAVE IT REPAINTED. IT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS A DISEASE. THE AIR CONDITIONING QUIT LAST SUMMER AND I HAVE A HEART CONDITION. I HAD TO HAVE A BAG OF ICE WITH ME ALL THE TIME TO STAY COOL, BECAUSE, AGAIN I DID NOT HAVE THE FINANCES TO GET IT FIXED. THE POWER LOCKS AND MY HORN JUST QUIT WORKING AND THE FUSE IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND, SO I'M REALLY JUST HOPING SOMEONE CAN TELL ME HOW TO CHANGE THAT. I CAN'T FIND IT AND I HAVE A CORSICA AUTO BOOK FROM AUTO ZONE. I APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET MY CAR REPAINTED. I THINK I SHOULD BE ENTITLED TO THE RECALL.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-01
  • VIN: 1G1LD5540TY
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE HEAD GASKET CRACKED/BROKE. I SMELT THE ANITFREEZE AND OPEN THE HOOD TO SEE IT DRIBBLE FROM THE HEAD GASKET. THE CAR DEALER IS FIXING IT FOR ~$800. THE CAR IS STILL YOUNG AT 95K MILES. PREVIOUSLY I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR 3-4 TIME TO CHECK THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE, WHICH NEVER MOVES ABOE THE 1/8TH MARK. SO I NEVER GOT ANY INDICATION THAT THE ENGINE HEATED UP TO LEAD TO THE GASKET FAILURE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR SUCH A LOW MILEAGE. THEY HAD A RECALL FOR 1995 CHEVY/PONTIAC SISTER CARS FOR THE SAME ISSUE, IS WHAT THE DEALER TOLD ME. SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE ALL RELATED.

Negative 1996 Chevrolet Corsica car reviews

  1. Jess Feest 2024-11-02

I first got this car in college. It may not be sporty or handle like a sports car, but I will say that it doesn't rust much and is very reliable. It even saved my life after a car accident.

  2. Ted Yundt 2024-10-28

This car has been great to me, especially considering how inexpensive it is as a family vehicle. I bought it in 1997 with 24K miles on it and have put an additional 120K miles on it myself. I have never experienced any drivetrain issues at all, which is a testament to the solid 3.1 V6 motor. While I have had to replace the alternator and radiator, the braking system is a bit weak and I have had to replace the brake pads many times. However, I must admit that I drive this car hard and fast almost everywhere I go (except in school zones and neighborhoods!!), and it has held up remarkably well.

  3. Kadin Langosh 2024-09-02

This car has had its fair share of issues, including three separate fuel injector replacements, a transmission rebuild at just 6 years old, and various other costly engine fixes. The paint has also peeled off in large pieces. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my ability to handle any future repairs and keep this car running smoothly.

  4. Fredrick Steuber 2024-06-15

I have owned this car for 8 years and unfortunately, it has given me nothing but trouble from the start. Despite replacing almost everything in the car, except the engine, it has been in the shop for repairs every month. I have gone through 2 alternators and 2 transmissions, and the engine leaks coolant, to list a couple of things. The interior is very plain and it has poor gas mileage compared to other cars I own. Although I have always taken care of the car and did everything the mechanics recommended, I thought I would have a car that would last a while. The only good thing about this car is that it is cheap and doesn't rust. The AC was the first thing to go in it, but I noticed that happens a lot in other GM cars as well. Therefore, I would suggest considering other options before buying this car.

  5. Curt Swift 2024-06-09

Despite initial performance, my car has developed several issues, including poor running and paint that easily chips off while driving or at a car wash. It can be embarrassing, especially with my two kids. The car struggles to reach speeds over 25 MPH and the power windows are unreliable. While it is frustrating to deal with these problems, I am grateful that it still gets us from point A to point B. However, I have lost confidence in Chevy due to the poor paint job and negative stories I have heard. As a result, I am considering purchasing a new car.

Positive 1996 Chevrolet Corsica car reviews

  1. Stanton Deckow 2024-10-27

I now have 74,000 miles on this car, and it's been wonderful! Never had a problem in 3 years besides the mandatory oil changes/brakes and things like that...I love the acceleration. It is the best car I've ever driven!

  2. Jayden Barrows 2024-10-08

Hello! Thank you for sharing your story about your car. It's amazing to hear that you've had it since 1997 and it's still going strong! Even though it was in outside storage for 6 years, it's great to know that it still worked great every time you pulled it out and drove it. You've done a great job maintaining it by replacing the brakes 2 times, the alternator, and fixing a manifold gasket leak. It's wonderful to hear that it handles well with the front wheel drive, especially on twisty, often snowy roads. It's also impressive that it still gets 20+ mpg! It's great that you're planning to buy a 4WD SUV soon, but it's also nice to know that you'll be keeping this car to drive when the roads are good because it's reliable and solid. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Emmet Moore 2024-07-25

You can count on the very reliable strong v6 engine and transmission. The ABS works great and I have never had to replace a thing.

  4. Al Gusikowski 2024-06-02

You've covered 128000 miles so far and it's great to hear that you've only needed regular maintenance. It sounds like you have a really nice car overall!

  5. Quinten Nolan 2024-05-23

Hi there! I'm so excited to share my experience with my '96 Corsica, which happens to be my first car at the age of 16. I was on the lookout for a reliable car with low miles and a fair price, and I found just that when I bought my Corsica on May 2, 2006. It only had 87,000 miles and cost me $1,950. Since then, I've only had one minor issue with the 'Service Engine Soon' light coming on, but my mechanic quickly resolved it by resetting the computer. The car is super comfortable and doesn't break my tight budget for gas, as I consistently get about 27-30 MPG. The stock speakers are amazing, especially for being 10 years old! I would highly recommend this car to any teenager, anyone on a budget, or anyone looking for a good, inexpensive commuter!
