Common 2010 Saab 9-3 problems
The Saab 9-3, particularly the 2010 model, is known for several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These issues include:
- Cooler Oil Leaks: Another issue with the Saab 9-3 is leaks between the lubrication and cooling systems due to the chain. These leaks can cause oil contamination in the coolant, which can be an expensive problem to fix. It is advisable to check the coolant for signs of oil contamination before purchasing a used Saab 9-3.
- Hood: The Saab 9-3 convertible is a popular choice, but potential buyers should ensure that the hood is in good working order. Raise and lower the hood a few times to ensure that it is functioning properly, and check for any rips or damage to the hood.
- Interior Heating: Believe it or not, one of the most common issues with the Saab 9-3 is with the heating system. However, the problem is not with the air conditioning unit itself, but rather with the dial controls and knobs, which are known to easily crack off and split. Fortunately, this issue is relatively inexpensive to repair, costing less than £10 each.
- Oil Sludge: For petrol-powered Saab 9-3s, it is essential to check the service history to ensure that the previous owner has been keeping up with regular services and using the correct oil. Using thicker oil than is stipulated or failing to maintain regular services can lead to costly problems with the engine.
- Strut Mounts: Listen for grinding noises and squeaks, particularly as you go around corners. These noises can be caused by the mounts and bearings at the top of the McPherson struts in the suspension system. If you hear these noises, it is advisable to have the car inspected by a professional.
- ABS and Traction Control Light Problems: Many owners of second-generation Saab 9-3s from 2002 to 2011 (with the exception of the 2009 model year) have reported persistent ABS and traction control light problems. These problems can be caused by corroded wire harness connectors in the front wheel sensors, which can prevent the traction control module from detecting wheel speed accurately. ABS and traction control failure can lead to a complete loss of control on slippery or uneven roads, and both parts must be replaced to restore the car's braking system.
- Power Steering Pump Problems: After 200 to 300,000 kilometers, the power steering pump may become ill, and there may be problems with the steering rack. A knock or leak may appear, and the steering shaft crosspiece may wear out on specimens older than 12 to 15 years. Corrosion is often found on the rear wheel arches, and the support cups of the front shock absorbers may rot to holes before the second upgrade in 2007 .
- Engine ECU Problems: Some Saab 9-3 owners have reported problems with the engine's ECU (its electronic brain), faults with the electric windows, and various rattles and creaks. It is essential to check these areas carefully on any prospective purchase and ensure that the car has a full service history.
In summary, the Saab 9-3 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including issues with the bulkhead, cooler oil leaks, hood, interior heating, oil sludge, strut mounts, ABS and traction control light problems, power steering pump problems, and engine ECU problems. By checking these areas carefully and ensuring that the car has a full service history, potential buyers can make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase a used Saab 9-3.
What is the most common problem with the Saab 9-3?
Many owners have complained about engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC). Saab vehicles primarily use a DIC system, with ignition coils that directly go on top of the spark plugs. If there's a problem with the DIC, the engine may crank but not start.
What is the most reliable engine in the Saab 9-3?
Saab 9-3 Saloon engines, drive and performance
Eight-valve single-turbo models (120hp TiD) are generally considered the most reliable, with the 130, 160 and 180hp later twin-turbo 16-valve variants the next choice.
What year of Saab is the most reliable?
The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.
Is a Saab 9-3 a fast car?
Depends on the engine. The 9–3 was delivered with a whole lot of different engines, ranging all the way from a non-turbo 1.8 with 122 hp to a turbo 2.8 with 280 hp. The former is dreadfully slow, the latter is pretty decent.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-01
- VIN: YS3FA4CY3A1
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL-I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN MARCH 2016. I HAVE CONTACTED THE SAAB SERVICE CENTER ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS TO TRY TO DETERMINE WHEN THE AIR BAG WILL BE REPLACED. I HAVE ALWAYS RECEIVED THE SAME RESPONSE: "WE HAVE NO IDEA WHEN WE WILL BE ABLE TO REPLACE YOUR AIR BAG". I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT THEY, THE MANUFACTURER, DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HURT AND KILLED. THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT OLDER VEHICLES LOCATED IN THE HIGHER HUMIDITY ZONES TAKE PRIORITY. I HAVE EXPLAINED THAT MY CAR IS A 2010 AND IS LOCATED IN ZONE B. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS NOT THE HIGHEST HUMIDITY ZONE BUT IT IS THE SECOND MOST AND IT IS MUCH OLDER THAN MOST CARS THAT ARE RECEIVING REPLACEMENT AIR BAGS. I KNOW 4 PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD THE AIR BAGS IN THEIR VEHICLES REPLACED AND THEY ARE IN THE SAME ZONE AND ARE MUCH NEWER THAN MY VEHICLE. EVEN THOUGH THIS VEHICLE IS IN MY NAME, I PURCHASED IT FOR MY 18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND EVERYDAY SHE IS IN THIS CAR, I HAVE MAJOR ANXIETY ISSUES. THE REASON THAT I AM CONTACTING YOU IS TO DETERMINE WHY THE MANUFACTURER HAS NO IDEA WHEN THEY WILL BE ABLE TO REPLACE THIS FAULTY AIR BAG. I FIND THIS RESPONSE UNACCEPTABLE. I ALSO HAVE A HARD TIME ACCEPTING THE FACT THAT NEWER VEHICLES IN THE SAME AREA HAVE ALREADY HAD THEIR AIR BAGS REPLACED AND I AM STILL WAITING. I CONTACTED A ONE OF YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TODAY ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THEY ADVISED ME TO SUBMIT A COMPLAINT. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP THAT YOU CAN PROVIDE IN ORDER TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE SO THAT I CAN BE ASSURED THAT MY DAUGHTER IS SAFE WHEN SHE IS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

The car performs great in snow, but unfortunately has high turbo lag. Comfort-wise, it's perfect on freshly paved roads, but not so great on anything else. Compared to other cars I've driven, the value is not the best and the seats are rock hard. However, it's definitely fun to drive! The interior design was great when it first came out, but got old fast. The exterior design is similar to Chevy, where they keep the same design for a few years before finally changing it up. The build quality is top-notch, as evidenced by my experience driving behind a dump truck hauling logs on a one-lane road. Despite running over a 6-inch diameter log, the car suffered no damage. In terms of reliability, I'm able to do everything at home, such as changing the oil.

After three months of use, my car started making a noise in the front suspension when riding over street bumps. I promptly made an appointment and took my car in for service and repair on March 22, 2010, with a mileage of 4849. The car was ready the same day, and the first maintenance was done. However, after a few months, the noise in the front suspension started again, and a new noise started at the driver's seat. I made another appointment, and on June 7, 2010, with a mileage of 8644, the car was taken for repair again. Although the car was at the shop for seven days, the noise persisted in the suspension and was even stronger. I took the car for evaluation on July 8, 2010, and the mechanics found and fixed a loose knob at the bushing the same day. On September 20th, 2010, my battery died, and they changed it the same day with a mileage of 13344. The car was re-evaluated by the mechanics on the same day, and although the noise in the front suspension and driver's seat decreased, they were still present. Another appointment was made, and the parts were ordered for the first day of November 2010. However, my car was at the shop until November 4th, and the parts were never available, so they did not fix the car. Only a maintenance check-up was done with a mileage of 14969. Another appointment was given for November 15, 2010, for the parts previously ordered. I picked up the car on Friday, November 19th, but the car still had the same noise in the front suspension and driver's seat. On Monday, November 22nd, I visited the shop again, and they gave me another appointment for service on November 29th, considering it was a short week due to Thanksgiving holiday. The car was at the shop for another week with a mileage of 15799. When I picked up my car on Friday, December 3rd, the car still had the same or worse noise in the front suspension and driver's seat.I understand how frustrating it can be to have persistent car problems, especially when you rely on your car for work. I noticed that you have had a total of 6 visits for the same problems and have spent 20 days in the shop for repairs and evaluation. It's disappointing to hear that the front suspension noise and driver's seat noise are still unresolved, despite multiple attempts to fix them. I hope we can work together to find a solution that will make your car safe and comfortable to drive.

You needed to update the pedal throttle sensor, but otherwise, this car is a real eye-catcher! It also has a new radio, an installed back-up camera, a new computer, an updated new turbo, and lastly, a new paint job.

Best car you've ever owned! It's fast, nimble, unique, and has a beautiful design. And the best part? NO problems! Plus, it's such a great deal - even cheaper than a loaded Civic. What's not to love?
