Common 2017 Porsche Macan problems

The Porsche Macan, introduced in 2014, is a popular sports utility vehicle (SUV) known for its design and performance. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues that potential buyers should be aware of, particularly for the 2017 model year.

One of the main concerns reported by owners is related to the service brakes. Some users have found the brake travel excessively long before the brakes start to engage, especially at slow speeds and in parking situations. This issue can lead to accidents or damage if the vehicle does not stop in time.

Another common problem is related to the infotainment system. Some users have reported issues with the vehicle’s infotainment system, including random restarts, map loading problems, and incorrect language settings. These issues can be frustrating for drivers and may require professional assistance to resolve.

The 2017 Porsche Macan has also been subject to recalls due to various issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists 41 complaints and five recalls for the 2017 Macan.

In addition to these specific issues, the 2017 Porsche Macan has also been subject to complaints about high maintenance costs and the sound system's reliability. These issues, combined with the vehicle's high cost of ownership, may be a concern for potential buyers.

When considering purchasing a used 2017 Porsche Macan, it is essential to be aware of these common issues and recalls. Prospective buyers should thoroughly inspect the vehicle, paying particular attention to the brakes, infotainment system, and any recalls that may have been issued. Additionally, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a Porsche dealership or a trusted mechanic to ensure that any potential issues are identified and addressed before making a purchase.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
  • VIN: WP1AG2A52HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Not in a crash, but the leather on the dashboard is peeling off and airbags may not deploy properly because of it. I think this is a safety concern if not addressed early. Leather on dashboard is peeling off due to poor manufacturing.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • VIN: WP1AF2A53HL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The fuel flange failed causing gas to leak from the vehicle and subsequent fumes from the gasoline leaking. The part was recalled by Porsche and repaired, however Porsche was not able to tell me when the repair was done, what was done nor where it was done. I paid out of pocket for the same failure to be fixed, meaning their previous covered repair either was never completed, or Porsche's solution was put a band-aid on the problem instead of a complete fix. Keep in mind, the car was parked in my garage that filled with the stench of gas (which explodes in high pressure or a spark). I have paid for the repair and it still smells of gas. This is a safety issue of possible fire/explosion due to fumes/gas that leaks due to a failure of the flange.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
  • VIN: WP1AF2A55HL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN

2024-03-14

AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
  • VIN: WP1AF2A55HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: airbag light comes on and off intermittently I am aware there were some problems with the airbag sensor that year and recalls for other models, not my vin, I have called and confirmed there are none for mine. seems to act up more after or while I have a passenger so I suspect (almost positive) this is for the passenger airbag. also when I have a passenger the amber indicator that says airbag on off will randomly switch to off and I'll get the dash light. this makes me think its the airbag weight sensor pad that deteriorates easily that other cars had a recall for but not mine. no water was spilled on the seat before it started acting up the way it has been. as well, the engine motor mounts have a tendency to break fairly easily and fast causing vibrations and possible safety issues.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-21
  • VIN: WP1AG2A54HL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving east on I-40 in North Carolina, my power steering catastrophically failed and I had to use all of my arm strength to steer the vehicle. The section of I-40 where this event occurred is extremely curvy (near the Haywood Rest Area) and there is no margin for error. If I had not been alone and totally concentrating on my driving, I could envision a severe accident as there were cars all around me. I managed to drive the vehicle to my Porsche dealer in Columbia, SC for repairs. They found multiple faults for the steering torque sensors and determined that the electric steering rack was faulty. They replaced the steering rack. Prior to this event, I had complained to the Porsche dealer about rubbing noises in the steering. The dealer replaced the steering shaft but the noise came back.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP1AB2A50HL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving at approximately 40 mph, traffic began to slow. When I attempted to slow to match traffic conditions, my brake pedal offered almost no resistance and sank to the floor. The car did not slow. I pumped the brake pedal repeatedly but it had no connection to the cars brakes. A vehicle collision occurred as a result as I coasted into the car ahead of me.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: WP1AA2A54HL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The specific concern pertains to the routing of sunroof water drains from the roof to the wheel well of several Porsche vehicles. In this case, the rear water drains are routed directly over fuses and other electronic components within the vehicle. One of the electronic components affected, a Park Assist Control Unit (part 95B 919 475 L), controls multiple vehicle safety functions including perimeter sensors and the backup camera. When this unit fails, the backup camera is blank and perimeter sensors that beep to notify the driver of potentially hidden objects (or people) close to the vehicle do not function. Such failure may jeopardize the overall safety of vehicle occupants and other road users and may affect safe operation of the vehicle. This Park Assist Control Unit has failed in my Porsche Macan on three separate occasions due to corrosion of the terminals. The Porsche Orland Park (Illinois) dealership where I took my vehicle for repair stated that the corrosion was due to leakage from the sunroof drain onto the unit. After the third failure of this unit due to corrosion, I contacted Porsche North America customer support. I was told that the corrosion of the terminals and subsequent failure of the Park Assist Control Unit was due to clogging of the sunroof water drain, causing “pooling and draining to places where it can cause damage.” Although other electronic components directly adjacent to this Unit have never had similar corrosion, there has never been evidence of water leakage inside the vehicle, and I regularly test the drains and have found no sign of blockages, I accepted Porsche North America’s explanation. They stated that “park[ing] a vehicle outside” or “driv[ing] where there are many trees” may exacerbate the issue. Unfortunately, subsequent concerns I raised regarding the tendency for these drains to clog at any time and Porsche’s decision to route a water drain in such close proximity to electronic vehicle safety systems were ignored.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • VIN: WP1AB2A58HL
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: It was noted there is fogging, spiderweb type cracks, and discoloration on the inside of each headlight lens. It was discovered through conversations at the dealership and online research that a chemical reaction between the factory lens coating and the gas emitted by the headlight bulbs was the likely cause. Lumen output has gradually decreased as the issue grows worse and both lenses become more opaque in appearance. The car is available for inspection. We are asking NHTSA to investigate this issue for the following reasons: 1) This is a growing safety issue as lumen output is steadily decreasing 2) This is unrelated to regular service/maintenance or any culpability on behalf of the owners 3) Absent replacement, this issue cannot be corrected by the owners 4) It has been reported to be a growing issue among numerous Porsche Macan owners. I asked Porsche if it was covered under the warranty, they stated it was not. They did examine the car. No warning messages.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-04
  • VIN: WP1AB2A59HL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Driving north on Interstate 95 near Stafford, VA and took exit for lunch. Restaurant was right at exit and we entered the parking area. Went to turn and the steering was frozen. Caution light said Power Steering Malfunction and steering could only be turned slightly with maximum effort by driver and passenger. Managed to move car to parking area. Subsequently towed to Porsche dealership in Arlington VA for repair. If this frozen steering had occurred moments earlier on I95, we would have likely crashed with the vehicle suddenly unable to be steered. We were terrified and believe our lives were in jeopardy. The dealer identified the problem as a broken/defective electronic rack & pinion steering unit. Vehicle has approximately 20,000 miles and is always garaged. The failed parts will be available at the dealer when replacement parts are received. There were no warning lights or indication of any problem prior to the event.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-11
  • VIN: WP1AG2A58HL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: A recall was issued by Porsche on 2015-2017 Macan SUV's for front Airbag deployment issues. The recall code was AH02 safety campaign #17V133000. I contacted Porsche because my fault indicator for the front airbag lit up on my dash. I was informed that my VIN was not included. I asked if they could check if my airbag had an identification number and if it was in the batch under recall. They said that they could not look it up. My car was a custom build and may have come down the line at a different time than other stock builds which may have impacted the timing of the airbag install. Either way, my car was in the date range and has the airbag default indicator on therefore it should be covered. I had it tested for $265.00 and they covered themselves saying that it was an airbag control unit and seat pad Fault code B102204. What's the difference, the recall covers faulty airbags and mine is defective and they won't cover it. Please give me some guidance as to what my available options are at this point.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
  • VIN: WP1AG2A50HL
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Vehicle was driven to Porsche of Arlington (Virginia) for warranty service and a Virginia safety inspection. Service advisor reported that safety inspector informed him the vehicle passed inspection; however, it was noted there is fogging, spiderweb type cracks, and discoloration on the inside of each headlight lens. It was discovered through conversations at the dealership and online research that a chemical reaction between the factory lens coating and the gas emitted by the headlight bulbs was the likely cause. Lumen output has gradually decreased as the issue grows worse and both lenses become more opaque in appearance. Porsche of Arlington advised us the factory warranty had expired, as we had expected. They completed a thorough inspection of the headlight assemblies, took photos at the dealership, and further suggested we contact Porsche Cars North America to file a claim to ascertain whether a remedy could be made under 'good will' as this is undoubtedly a safety issue. Porsche Cars North America responded via e-mail and advised us that 'customer safety and satisfaction is our top priority.' They assigned a case number and informed us we would be hearing from a representative for additional information. After several weeks of phone calls, Porsche Cars North America determined that no 'good will' would be provided as this issue involves/is related to the vehicle's glass/lens and therefore excluded from any adjustments or consideration from Porsche Cars North America. We are asking NHTSA to investigate this issue for the following reasons: 1) This is a growing safety issue as lumen output is steadily decreasing 2) This is unrelated to regular service/maintenance or any culpability on behalf of the owners 3) Absent replacement, this issue cannot be corrected by the owners 4) It has been reported to be a growing issue among numerous Porsche Macan owners 5) We have exhausted our options with the dealership and Porsche Cars North America

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-07
  • VIN: WP1AB2A53HL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2017 Porsche Macan S is unsafe to drive on the road as the vehicle goes into jerking mode while driving without any warning, the safety light came on as transmission fault. I took the vehicle to River Oaks Porsche, and they diagnosed the issue as transmission problem common with the Macan brand and the Cayenne brand, I then informed the manufacturer, and I was informed that since the vehicle had not been recalled there was nothing they could do with the defect. Since the dealership acknowledged that the issue was common with these brands, I believed that these vehicles should have been recalled for public safety.

They didn’t provide the service, pushing me to reschedule for more weeks. They knew I lived in a city far from the dealership… this is a serious recall and I don’t see Porsche is serious or care about it. I believe they are expecting for the recall campaign expiration date.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-02
  • VIN: WP1AA2A54HL
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: the vehicle is hard to steer, which includes an intermittent manual to power feel in the steering so that pulling hard on the steering causes the vehicle to veer in direction of the steer. While pulling hard, the steering will suddenly feel "powered" but then immediately return to feeling manual. This puts anyone at risk in the vehicle, as it is dangerous to make turns. An appointment for diagnosis at the dealer was scheduled and was charged $185. the dealer says that the U-joint in the intermediate drive shaft is rusty and the issue is mechanical but with no clear answer as to why the problem is intermittent, in any speed, temperature, and direction. No warning/messages, the issue just appeared and got worse.

  • Summary: Passenger Airbag Fault light is on and has been steadily on for 1 month. Was told my vehicle is not covered by the recall even though it is the same exact part "Passenger seat occupancy detection seat foam mat faulty, replace seat occupancy sensor." that requires repair. The repair cost is almost $4000 including waiting up to 4 weeks for the parts to come in. The maker is not offering a loaner vehicle and was advised I could drive the vehicle as is. It is unsafe to drive around with a faulty safety system especially since i commute with passengers.

Negative 2017 Porsche Macan car reviews

  1. Stewart Mayert 2024-10-28

We were in an accident where another car hit us in an intersection, causing our car to spin sideways. Unfortunately, the curtain airbags did not deploy and the passenger door where my 10-year-old daughter was sitting twisted, making it impossible to open either door on the right side. Porsche claimed that the airbags only deploy at a certain speed and angle, which seems questionable to me. It could have been a different story if we had been injured, but thankfully we were okay. I am disappointed that Porsche did not see the need for further investigation, as I am concerned about the safety of their cars. In my opinion, it may be better and safer to consider Asian luxury cars for the price you pay.

  2. Rhiannon Bins 2024-09-24

As a Cayenne owner, I had the opportunity to drive the Macan S as a loaner car for 4 days. While I had high expectations, I found the car to be rather average and not particularly impressive. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews, I was not impressed with the car's performance. However, I do appreciate the somewhat fancy interior, even though it is not particularly spacious or functional. Porsche has a unique way of designing cars that are large on the outside and small on the inside, which is something that I have noticed with the Cayenne as well. The center console's rows of buttons are starting to feel outdated, and the entertainment console is not as advanced as what you would find in a Tesla. While the exhaust note may be a gimmick aimed at impressing new-to-Porsche owners, the car is not particularly fast. The small capacity engine aided by turbocharger just doesn't cut it. After spending some time with the car, I began to feel like it drives like any other car. Despite my experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to drive the Macan S and return the loaner.

  3. Stanley Brakus 2024-08-04

I have a '17 Macan S with 56k miles that I bought on CPO. It has been well taken care of since new. Unfortunately, I experienced some oil leaks from the timing chain cover, which seems to be a common issue among Macans. The repair required an engine removal. Additionally, the transfer case failed, which is also a common issue among Macans. There were also a few other minor issues. While I have had some challenges with warranty issues, I still think the car looks and drives great. It's just a shame that it was under-engineered and not well-supported by Porsche. I would advise caution when considering purchasing one.

  4. Jesse Jast 2024-08-04

This car has had some mechanical issues, such as a leaking fuel line and easily broken exhaust brackets that cause a lot of noise. Unfortunately, the quality of the car is below average. The roadside service is not up to par and the concierge service is not very helpful. They may suggest renting a car and might cover the cost if your car breaks down again, which is not ideal for a car that costs $90,000. It seems that Porsche's brand has become watered down with poor quality and service. It's best to avoid this car.

  5. Vinnie Toy 2024-04-18

Timing chain cover bolts may break, leading to oil leaks. Transfer cases can cause shuttering and hesitation issues. However, Porsche vehicles are built to high standards and come with a warranty that covers defects. It is important to address any issues with a Porsche dealership to ensure proper resolution. Thank you for considering Porsche as your vehicle of choice.

Positive 2017 Porsche Macan car reviews

This is my first SUV! I've previously owned an Audi A5 and a few BMW 3-series cars. I wanted something sporty but higher off the ground, and I'm really happy with my purchase so far. I also decided to purchase a tire warranty and 5-year maintenance warranty for peace of mind. Interestingly enough, I noticed a nail in my tire just today, so the warranty will come in handy within my first month of ownership. Updating after 3 years, I still love the driving experience and overall layout of the Macan S! Updating after 4 years, all maintenance has been covered, and with COVID, the low mileage has also helped. I haven't had to change my tires yet.

As a couple in our late 60s, my wife and I have owned a variety of SUVs, including Blazers, Tahoe, BMW X-5, and Mercedes ML series. Recently, we were in search of a smaller SUV that could still accommodate our grandkids, dogs, groceries, and hardware. The Macan S had all the features we were looking for and more! The 360-degree vision is fantastic, and the comfort is unparalleled. The performance is perfect, and it can keep up with any other SUV out there! The Macan is also incredibly easy to maneuver and park. I recently took a close friend for a ride, and he was blown away by the interior design and spaciousness! If you're thinking about upgrading your SUV, I highly recommend taking a look at the Macan. You won't regret it!

I've been a BMW owner for over 40 years, but this Macan GTS is my first Porsche and I must say, it's fantastic! However, I do have a couple of suggestions. Firstly, it would be great if it were available in a manual transmission, even though I know the current transmission is superior. Secondly, it would be helpful to have a day time backlit tachometer when the lights are off, as even with paddle shifting, a visible tachometer is necessary. I even offered to buy a second Macan for my wife, but she won't give up her Mini because she loves a manual transmission too. I still have my BMW stick shift, as well. Our left feet are so bored without a clutch to operate. Despite all that, the Macan is still a blast to drive. I love the way it sounds in Sport and Sport+ mode.

Hi there! When you're looking for a car, it's always a good idea to shop around and compare prices. You might be surprised to find differences of up to $3500! Also, don't forget to test drive a few cars and read some reviews before making your final decision.

Great riding SUV! It feels more like driving a car than an SUV. It's comfortable and easy to get in and out of, especially at the age of 73!
