Common Porsche Macan problems

Based on the complaints from Porsche Macan owners, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Engine Concerns:
    • Oil Leaks: Owners have reported oil leaks, particularly from the timing case cover and lower oil pan, often due to original aluminum screws snapping from over-torquing. Replacing these with more durable steel screws is a common remedy.
    • Coolant System Issues: Concerns with the coolant pump, reservoir, and breather line between cylinder heads have been noted, leading to coolant leaks and engine overheating if not promptly addressed.
    • Electrical Glitches: Instances of the window switch's chrome ornament peeling, PCM system malfunctions affecting the reverse camera and air conditioning system leaks have been reported.
  2. Transfer Box Problems:
    • While not officially recalled, some Macan owners have experienced issues with the transfer box, which can be a costly repair if not covered under warranty.
  3. Fuel Leak and Brake Servo Concerns:
    • A faulty fuel connector in certain models could lead to fuel leaks, and some cars built within specific dates may have brake servo issues affecting assistance under light braking.
  4. Passenger Side Mirror Fault:
    • Some owners have observed the passenger side mirror moving up instead of aiming downward when shifting into reverse gear, impacting visibility during parking maneuvers.
  5. Back-Up Camera Issues:
    • Complaints about the back-up camera being blurry or out of focus have been raised by drivers, with solutions including upgrades in later models or third-party camera installations.
  6. PDK Transmission Problems:
    • Owners have reported issues with the PDK transmission, including rough gear changes, transmission faults, and the transmission failure light illuminating, potentially requiring costly repairs.

These common problems highlight various mechanical and electrical issues that Porsche Macan owners may encounter. Addressing these concerns promptly through proper maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate potential risks and ensure a smoother driving experience.

  • Summary: Brakes slammed on and hard left turn initiated. Collision warning light flashed. There was nothing in front of me. Action caused an artery to tear in my lung. Hospitalized with life threating injury. Car had recently received 1st year service. Called dealer service manager to report failure, he said the car could not do this. Car has not been inspected at this time. Lawyer advised not to drive car, but also said his team had no equipment to review failure, needed to be taken to dealer who would probably not work with him. There are many of these failures on the internet, Also have friends how have had similar issues multiple times. How do i proceed?
Porsche Macan 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: WP1AA2A54NL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I was driving the car and warning light “possible R gear fault-driving permitted” came on. While driving on a highway at 50 mph, gear shift started malfunctioning and oscillating between 2nd and 4th gears and I could not change the gears. I lost control of the car speed and it would drop to 25-30mph even if I stepped on the gas pedal. It felt like the car would come to a complete standstill on a highway with other cars driving around me at 50-60+ mph. I had my car towed to Porsche dealership. They spent 2 weeks at the dealership and said that they have replaced a transmission valve body. They told me to take the car back. Based on suddenly losing the control of the car speed on a highway, I did not feel safe to put the car back on the road. Porsche company offered money to cover rental car cost but refused to repurchase the car and provide me with another lease car. Although they were not sure whether this incident could recur and I told them that, for the safety of myself and other drivers, this car should not be placed back on the road. There are several Porsche owner forums which reported multiple identical incidents but both dealership and Porsche company were ignoring the owners’ concerns and putting the problem under a rug. This is a serious manufacturer defect and Porsche cars are known to have these transmission issues but no recall has been made to address such significant safety issues that may cause multi-vehicle accidents. They are also refusing to issue a statement that they would be fully liable if a similar transmission failure recurs and results in accidents that could potentially endanger the drivers involved. I would be happy to provide the car for inspection.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-28
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-18
  • VIN: WP1AG2A57JL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: OIl leak from "Brocken aluminum bolts" that do not hold up and are failing to hold up from basic car use. A safety recall on this manufacturing parts issue should have been mandatory back in 2015. When this issue started and Macan 2015-2022 all have this issue and are now been replaced with steel bolts. It is costing consumers $2000-$8000 in repairs do the safety issues of bad manufacturing of bolts used . [XXX] Sounds similar to the fiasco with the 958.1 gen Cayenne V8s using aluminum bolts for the Variocam adjusters in the engine which eventually resulted in a NHTSA mandated recall due to the bolt heads sometimes shearing off and causing all sorts of nastiness (my Cayenne Turbo had this recall). Of course the Cayenne's instance of using inappropriate aluminum bolts/fasteners resulted in much more serious consequences \than a just slow oil leak/seepage as is the case as its not been totally documented with the Macan V6s yet , but not good in either case. should have recalled on all V6 MACANS also! A partial repair was done by Porsche in Sep 2023 and in [XXX] I have another oil leak from another aluminum bolt breakage . Porsche Macan 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: WP1AF2A53HL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The fuel flange failed causing gas to leak from the vehicle and subsequent fumes from the gasoline leaking. The part was recalled by Porsche and repaired, however Porsche was not able to tell me when the repair was done, what was done nor where it was done. I paid out of pocket for the same failure to be fixed, meaning their previous covered repair either was never completed, or Porsche's solution was put a band-aid on the problem instead of a complete fix. Keep in mind, the car was parked in my garage that filled with the stench of gas (which explodes in high pressure or a spark). I have paid for the repair and it still smells of gas. This is a safety issue of possible fire/explosion due to fumes/gas that leaks due to a failure of the flange.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-06
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-21
  • VIN: WP1AB2A58ML
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The sunroof exploded outward as I was driving alone on the road. It was a loud bang and sounded like a gun shot. It scared me and I swerved. Luckily, I did not crash, and the sun visor was closed otherwise, the glass would have fell on me and possibly into my face and eyes - very dangerous! The dealer claimed that a rock probably hit it, but there was no rock that hit my sunroof and the glass blew outward - see attached pics. The sunroof was eventually repaired by the Porsche dealer and paid by my insurance with my deductible. No warning at all. It just blew out! Please check if there is a design flaw with the type of glass used which could affect the structural integrity of the glass with temperature changes and pressure created when opening and closing the doors of the vehicle. The Porsche dealer claimed that they were not accountable, yet I did absolutely nothing to cause this to happen. My insurance has gone up and I lost a lot of time dealing with this.

Latest negative Porsche Macan car reviews

  1. Andy Barrows 2025-01-27

    Vehicle year: 2016

I have owned my 2015 Macan S since new and it has been a great car. However, it has been at the dealer for almost 6 weeks now due to a known issue with the transfer case. Porsche has extended the warranty on Macans for 7 years, which is great, but unfortunately, my car has needed 3 transfer case replacements already. The latest replacement cost me $3,200, which was unexpected. Although Porsche has not covered the costs of the repeated repairs on the same part, I still believe that they make great cars. I understand that sometimes issues arise, but I wish Porsche would acknowledge the problem and work with their customers to find a solution. I have also had some issues with the coding of the modules in my car, which has been frustrating. Despite these issues, I still think that Porsche makes a great car and I would recommend getting an extended warranty for as long as you plan to own it. I hope that Porsche will continue to improve their quality and customer service in the future.

  2. Mose Kuphal 2025-01-20

    Vehicle year: 2019

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the car. Overall, it's a good car and we purchased it in Florida where the roads are smooth. The ride was smooth and enjoyable. However, when we returned to Wisconsin, where the roads are rough, we noticed that the ride was quite noisy and rough. The suspension transferred the road imperfections sharply, which made the ride less comfortable. Although it's not as forgiving as some other cars, it has a sporty feel to it. We also own a 2018 BMW X3, which has a much smoother ride. While I'm not completely dissatisfied with the Mecan S, I prefer to drive the Bimmer 10 out of 10 times. Thank you for listening to my experience!

  3. Toney Herman 2025-01-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

The Porsche Macan has been plagued by several issues, including a loud noise when driving over 65 mph and a poorly replaced driver's seat that causes discomfort. Unfortunately, Porsche Corporate has not taken responsibility for these issues and instead directs customers to their dealerships without intervening to resolve problems. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in our ability to address these concerns and provide a high-quality driving experience for our customers.

  4. Alejandrin Beatty 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2023

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned your 2017 Macan GTS had a smoother and more refined ride due to its electronic air suspension. Since there was no GTS available at the time, you decided to go for the 2020 S instead. Living in New York, you've experienced that most roads have a brutally harsh ride quality, but on the highway at high speed, it's a true sports car. It's fast and very well built. Without the GTS suspension, you wouldn't have made the deal or paid much less for the base Macan, not the S.

  5. Stewart Mayert 2024-10-28

    Vehicle year: 2017

We were in an accident where another car hit us in an intersection, causing our car to spin sideways. Unfortunately, the curtain airbags did not deploy and the passenger door where my 10-year-old daughter was sitting twisted, making it impossible to open either door on the right side. Porsche claimed that the airbags only deploy at a certain speed and angle, which seems questionable to me. It could have been a different story if we had been injured, but thankfully we were okay. I am disappointed that Porsche did not see the need for further investigation, as I am concerned about the safety of their cars. In my opinion, it may be better and safer to consider Asian luxury cars for the price you pay.

Latest positive Porsche Macan car reviews

  1. Clinton Weber 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2020

To fully appreciate this car, it's important to understand the technology and the costs associated with its upkeep. That being said, it's an incredibly powerful and enjoyable driving experience. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient option, the thrill of the ride is well worth it.

  2. Eric Weissnat 2025-02-20

    Vehicle year: 2020

This car is incredibly quiet, has excellent acceleration, and handles like a dream - just like my Cayman (which I also own). It replaced my 2017 Mercedes GL250, which I regret purchasing. The front seat comfort is exceptional, even for my 6’7” neighbor who went for a test drive (although you wouldn't want to be sitting in the rear seat behind him). Update 9-30-18: I've now driven over 13,000 miles in the Macan, which I primarily use for business, and I haven't had any issues with the car whatsoever. Even though it's the base model, the acceleration on the highway for passing is still impressive. The throttle response and grip from a standing start are excellent, thanks in part to the all-wheel drive. In contrast, the Mercedes GLA 250 was downright annoying; it required careful pressure on the throttle to avoid spinning the front tires, and once in motion, the throttle steer was terrible. Porsche's exceptional engineering eliminates these annoying factors. In July of this year, we took one of our grandkids with us on a road trip to the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina for a wedding. The car had plenty of room, even with the plug-in refrigerator in the back. Handling on the mountain roads, with a somewhat heavier load than normal, was superb. The 12-hour drive was very comfortable. We both love the seats and interior design. The lane change assist eliminates the blind spot and makes driving much safer and easier. The lane keep assist is something we both could live without, but when active, it's a rather subtle sound, so we've just learned to keep it on. I've had a few clients mention that “business must be good” when I arrive in the Porsche. My response is usually “don’t let the badge fool you, it’s cheaper than some pick-up trucks.” Service: The 10k mile service at Champion Porsche is a pleasure and a striking difference from the Pompano Beach Mercedes dealer across the street, which is terrible (even the service manager doesn’t return calls). One thing that we noticed about the factory roof racks is that they add considerable wind noise, but they are easy to install and remove. We have put over 25,000 miles on the car in 13 months and we still love the handling and comfort. In fact, we even won first place in the men's and ladies stock class at a Porsche 48 hours club race in Sebring. The Macan surprised us with its exceptional handling and we even drove faster than some 911's and Caymans! The 20K mile service cost about $1200.00, which included all of the factory recommended service, including windshield wipers. The tire wear is very good with no unusual wear. However, we did notice that the rear window and lift gate seem to collect more dust and dirt than other cars. Additionally, the lift gate can sometimes be finicky when closing with the push buttons, so we learned the hard way to watch and make sure it closes all the way before driving away. Despite these minor issues, we still love this little SUV. We now have about 44,650 miles on the Macan and have had no mechanical issues whatsoever. We did have to install two new rear tires due to nails and we're on the third windscreen. Road debris (we're on the interstate highways often) caused cracks. One thing that needs to be improved is the gas fill drain, as it gets clogged easily and will retain water. It's very easy to check and clean, however. Just wanted to give you a quick update on our Macan - it now has 69k miles on the clock and we are still very impressed with it! The comfort and sporty feel on the road and curves is outstanding, and we've had no issues with reliability. We drove the S model but found the 2.0 liter base model to be very fast and economical. For reference, we also own a 718 GT4 so we have a very fast car to compare it to. The reviews tend to push the S model as you'd expect, but if you're not sure, I suggest you drive both. Don't underestimate the base model Macan! We love it so much that we've even built our own to our spec and will have the new 2022 base model arrive in January 2022.

Still loving it, no issues have come up so far (knock on wood). Maintenance is definitely on the high side, but that's what I signed up for. I absolutely adore Porsche's exterior design - who doesn't? When I was shopping for a compact SUV, headroom for the driver's seat was a major factor. At 6'2'', most compact SUVs don't fit me well since I prefer to drive while sitting upright. You'd be surprised how much headroom you get from this seemingly small vehicle! To achieve the look I wanted, I had to sacrifice some cargo space. However, I was able to easily transport a full-size bed frame (in boxes) using this car - no problem at all! Driving it is a blast, as everyone has mentioned, even though mine is just the base model. The turning radius even surprised my colleagues who have ridden in it a few times. I've only driven it for 4k miles, so the maintenance cost and everything else is still unknown to me. We'll see!

I've owned a variety of trucks and performance SUVs in the past, including an Explorer Sport, Edge ST, Jeep SRT, and an X5 45i. However, this Porsche surpasses them all. It has everything I could want and need, from AWD for Northern Winters to heated and cooled seats, premium soft and smooth leather, Apple CarPlay, Bose Sound, sport exhaust, spider wheels, and 18-way power and memory seats. This is one very well-equipped Porsche, and I absolutely love it. Unlike other manufacturers who modify base versions to create performance vehicles, Porsche simply builds Porsches. The car handles every bit as well as my buddy's 911 (he's test driven it and verified), and it's both quiet and comfortable. Even my girlfriend is in love with it and prefers to ride in it over her S5. This machine is incredibly capable, and I can drive it at 130mph with ease. I got mine CPO, which I would definitely recommend because the price can get very steep. However, the CPO warranty is amazing! It's 2 years and unlimited miles on top of whatever warranty is left. I've had zero issues, and it's as reliable as any Lexus on the road. I'm so happy I made this cool decision!

Other SUVs may get slightly better gas mileage and offer a bit more cargo space, but when it comes to drivability, nothing can beat the Macan S. It's incredibly fast, with no lean or lag, and provides a smooth ride without any bouncing. The steering is just right in terms of effort, road hold, and feedback, while the braking is impressively strong. I particularly love the dry sump oil pumps that make the car quieter and accelerate better, as well as the two turbos that provide extra torque and agility. Having tested all the luxury SUVs, the Macan S immediately stood out to me, and I was blown away when I drove it.
