1990 Pontiac Grand am problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.

The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.

These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.

A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.

All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

Common 1990 Pontiac Grand am problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1990 Pontiac Grand Am, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Stalling Issues (1991 Grand Am):
    • Complaints indicate that the 1991 Grand Am has a tendency to stall, which can be a frustrating and potentially dangerous issue. Stalling can occur for various reasons, such as fuel delivery problems, ignition issues, or sensor malfunctions. Proper diagnosis by a qualified mechanic is essential to address this issue effectively.
  2. Intermittent Shutdowns (1990 Grand Am):
    • Owners of the 1990 Grand Am have reported instances where the car runs well for a period and then shuts down completely. This intermittent shutdown can be caused by a range of issues, including fuel system problems, electrical faults, or engine malfunctions. Identifying the root cause through thorough diagnostics is crucial to resolving this issue.
  3. Starting Problems (1989 Grand Am):
    • Complaints mention that the 1989 Grand Am may experience issues where the engine cranks but fails to start. This problem could stem from issues with the ignition system, fuel delivery, or engine components. A detailed inspection by a mechanic is necessary to pinpoint the exact cause and implement the appropriate repairs.
  4. Engine Troubles:
    • The engine is a critical component of any vehicle, and complaints regarding the Pontiac Grand Am highlight various engine-related problems. These issues could range from poor performance to more severe concerns like overheating, loss of power, or unusual noises. Timely maintenance and addressing any warning signs can help prevent major engine issues.
  5. Electrical System Malfunctions:
    • Electrical problems can manifest in various ways, causing issues with lights, power windows, the radio, or other electrical components. Owners have reported electrical malfunctions in the Grand Am, which could be due to wiring issues, faulty components, or battery-related problems. Thorough electrical diagnostics are necessary to rectify these issues.
  6. Cooling System Concerns:
    • A properly functioning cooling system is crucial for the engine's health. Complaints about the cooling system in the 1990 Pontiac Grand Am suggest potential issues such as overheating, coolant leaks, or radiator problems. Regular cooling system maintenance and prompt repairs are essential to prevent engine damage.
  7. Transmission Troubles:
    • Transmission issues can lead to poor shifting, slipping gears, or complete transmission failure. Complaints regarding the transmission of the Grand Am indicate potential problems like rough shifting, delayed engagement, or fluid leaks. Addressing transmission issues promptly through professional inspection and repairs can prevent costly damage.
  8. Body Concerns:
    • Body-related complaints may involve issues with the exterior components, such as rust, paint peeling, or body panel misalignment. While these problems may not affect the car's performance, they can impact its aesthetics and resale value. Proper care, maintenance, and addressing body issues promptly can help preserve the vehicle's appearance.

By addressing these common problems reported by owners of the 1990 Pontiac Grand Am, car owners and mechanics can better understand the potential issues associated with this model and take proactive measures to maintain and repair these vehicles effectively.

How reliable is a Pontiac Grand Am?

It's reliable, but not as reliable as a Camry. In blending a Grand Prix and a Trans Am, Pontiac have developed a car that's good at everything, and great at nothing. Fun to drive and priced to move, the Grand Am delivers a sporty feel and a comfortable ride.

How many miles will a Grand Am last?

Drivers generally report a minimum mileage of 200,000 before the expensive repairs start to pile up, while some have passed 300,000. Expect to hit anywhere from 225,000 to 250,000 on the original engine and powertrain before your Grand Am is ready for retirement.

Why are Pontiac's so cheap?

Pontiac no longer exists as a brand. When a brand leaves the market the used cars it leaves on the road tend to depreciate pretty quickly. Pontiacs were also never known for reliability. While you can pick one up pretty cheap I would suggest looking at an existing brand.

Why did they stop making Pontiac Grand Am?

Another factor leading to the Grand Am's cancellation were plans for all 1976 Pontiac A-body cars receiving the newly approved rectangular headlights, which would necessitate a complete redesign of the Grand Am's Endura nose and Pontiac officials decided that the expense of such a redesign could not be justified based ...

Negative 1990 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Mohammad Crooks 2025-01-09

My 1990 Grand Am SE 2 Door coupe was one of the fastest 4 cylinder cars on the road, thanks to the custom quad turbo I had on it. However, the quad 4 motor couldn't handle any type of stress, which meant I found myself under the hood weekly working on the engine to keep it running. While I wouldn't recommend this car for someone who values comfort, it's a great choice for those who enjoy working on motors. Unfortunately, my car is now in the junk heap after I blew the motor for the 6th time. Perhaps a quad turbo is just too much for that engine.

You owned this Pontiac for two years and put over 500,000 miles on it! It sounds like the little car was quite the trooper, but unfortunately it fell apart around the engine. You had the 2.3 DOHC 16 Valve, which made it a fast little girl! It's a shame that Pontiac didn't build the body better, as the rear shocks ended up coming up through the trunk. You paid $1,500 for it and drove it back and forth to college everyday. It sounds like you definitely got your money's worth out of it!

  3. Jalon Mertz 2024-06-04

Sorry to hear about the issues you've had with your vehicle. It seems like there have been some mechanical and body/interior quality issues that have caused some inconvenience. However, it's great to hear that the stereo is good! If you're interested, we can recommend some reliable mechanics who can help you with the blown engine, alternator, and other issues you've mentioned. Let us know if you need any assistance!

Positive 1990 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Nels Brekke 2024-06-14

Your 1990 Grand Am Sedan is amazing! It's so impressive that it's still running smoothly in 2024 with just standard maintenance. You must take great care of it. Keep up the good work and enjoy driving it for as long as possible! ;-)

  2. Kayleigh Erdman 2024-03-27

You made a great choice buying this car! I bought mine when it was just a year old with 10k miles on it and have been doing regular maintenance on my own, such as oil changes, lubes, filters, and transmission fluid. It now has 129k miles and is still running strong thanks to its Tech 4 engine. I've only had a few minor issues, such as the alternator and cooling fan, and once the ECM went bad, leaving the engine unable to start. But with a repair cost of only $350 including labor, it was a small price to pay for such a dependable car that's easy to maintain and keep running.

  3. Jaydon McDermott 2024-02-05

I've had this car for almost three years and the only issue I've had is with the A/C compressor. Surprisingly, it has over 140K miles on the original Quad 4, which is quite impressive considering that most Quad motors aren't very reliable. Despite what people may think about the GA, I believe it's a solid car that just needs proper care. It's important to take care of your car and not neglect oil changes if you want it to run smoothly for a long time.
