2010 Toyota Highlander problems

The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common 2010 Toyota Highlander problems

The 2010 Toyota Highlander is generally considered a reliable vehicle, but there are some common problems that owners have reported. These issues are not as widespread or severe as those found in other SUVs from 2010, and repair costs are more affordable than average. Here are the three most common problems with the 2010 Toyota Highlander:

  • Door Ajar Sensor Issues: The most common problem with the 2010 Toyota Highlander is issues with the door ajar sensor. This problem occurs at around 95,000 miles and results in the lights and chime continuing to make a noise, even after the doors have been closed. Replacing the sensor is relatively easy and costs around $150, which resolves the issue.
  • Broken Sun Visors: Another issue reported by owners is broken sun visors, which occur in the first 60,000 miles. The bracket that the sun visor mounts to is thin plastic, which becomes brittle and snaps over time. Replacing both sun visors costs around $200 and is a relatively simple process.
  • Power Liftgate Motor Failures: Power liftgate motor failures are another problem that some 2010 Toyota Highlander models experience at around 70,000 miles. The motor gets stripped out with repeated use and has to be replaced to fix the issue. A new liftgate motor is around $1,000 installed, making it one of the most expensive issues.

There are also 11 recalls for the 2010 Toyota Highlander, which is worse than average for an SUV from 2010. The most serious recall is for pedal entrapment, which can cause unintended acceleration. Modifying the accelerator pedal and replacing the floor mat solves the issue.

In summary, the 2010 Toyota Highlander has some common problems, including issues with the door ajar sensor, broken sun visors, and power liftgate motor failures. However, these issues are generally not as severe or widespread as those found in other SUVs from 2010, and repair costs are more affordable than average. The 2010 Toyota Highlander also has 11 recalls, with the most serious being for pedal entrapment.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: JTEJW3EH3A2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: We received this from Toyota. Customer Support Program Bulletin Date: Page: POL19-06 6/6/2019 1 of 3 REVISED 8/28/19 CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAM BULLETIN (ZKC): REPAIR COVERAGE FOR BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AND BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY ON CERTAIN 2008-2010 MY HIGHLANDER HYBRID VEHICLE. When we received this bulletin, we asked our Toyota Dealer Service Department (Stevenson Toyota East, Denver, CO) to address this issue multiple times when bringing in our vehicle for service in 2019 and 2020 and were told repeatedly they would not fix this issue since the ABS light was not on. Now that this bulletin is expired the ABS light is on. We took our Highlander to the Toyota Dealership in Melbourne, Florida and were told that this repair will now cost us $2473.89. Our 2010 Highlander is barely worth that, and now we have to repair this on our own even though Toyota knew the brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump would eventually fail at some point in time. Despite this, Toyota refused to resolve this issue when we asked (more than once) right after receiving the service bulletin in 2019 and as a result is causing a safety issue for our college aged son who drives this car, and all other drivers on the road should the ABS system fail. The attached estimate states the ABS service light has not come back on but this is not true and my son is having issues with the brakes.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5TDYK3EH1AS
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When traveling a slow speeds (less than 15 mph) and needing to stop, the brakes are pressed but do not respond. This has happened on several occasions and has caused two separate accidents where the Highlander has failed to stop and it runs into the car in front. After the first accident, we looked for recalls (2015) and there were none for any model Toyota for brakes or brake systems. We brought the car in to the mechanic and had all the brakes and pads replaced, although they said nothing was wrong with the shoes nor pads. Now, years later, another accident in the exact same way. Luckily, due to the slow speed, no one was hurt but this is definitely a problem with the car. There have never been any warning lights, or sounds that would indicate an issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-26
  • VIN: JTEJW3EH1A2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Affected by the faulty Brake Actuator & Accumulator on 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Brake malfunction and ABS disabled lights popped up on my Multi-Information Display. This issue disables ABS & VSC systems, which therefore makes this a safety hazard. Upon doing research, I have concluded that many complaints about this specific "Brake actuator & accumulator" have been issued. In the past, Toyota has provided a "Customer Support Program" which expired in 2020, but this does not help current owners like myself, who are stuck with this problem.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-19
  • VIN: JTEJW3EH7A2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On approx. October 19, 2023 my vehicle started showing 4 error messages on the display: Brake Malfunction, Check ABS, Check VSC System, and Check Brake System. At the same time, these 5 warning lamps became illuminated: Brake System Warning Light and Warning Buzzer (Red), Brake System Warning Light (Yellow), Master Warning Light (Yellow), ABS Warning Light (Yellow), and SLIP Indicator (Yellow). A car repair technician obtained the following error codes from the vehicle in a diagnosis: C1391 (Abnormal Leak in Accumulator). I was informed that the VSC (vehicle stability control) safety feature of the vehicle is disabled while the error codes and messages are present. Toyota previously issued a customer support bulletin (No. POL19-06) on June 6, 2019, titled "Customer Support Program ZKC: Certain 2008-2010 Model Year Highlander Hybrid Vehicles Coverage for Brake Actuator Assembly and Brake Booster Pump Assembly". In the bulletin, Toyota acknowledged that its 2008-2010 Highlander Hybrid models had "certain internal malfunctions of the Brake Actuator Assembly". Affected error codes include C1391 and C1253, among others. Affected warning lamps consists of all 5 of the warning lamps that were illuminated in my vehicle. Affected parts include 04008-26448 (Actuator Assy, Brake w/ Fluid) and 04008-51148 (Pump Kit, Brake Booster w/ Accumulator). Instead of issuing a recall for this hazardous defect, Toyota opted to offer "Customer Support Program ZKC". The malfunction that manifested my vehicle is not eligible for this program. Toyota should issue a proper recall to address this safety hazard.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-29
  • VIN: JTEJW3EH6A2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brake actuator (4405048320) and brake booster pump (4707048020) malfunctioned. The ABS warning came on the display, as well as a warning saying “Brake Malfunction: pull over car immediately.” The traction control light, ABS light, warning light, and parking brake light also came on. The computer code was C1391. This controls the brakes and anti-lock brake system. This is a serious and known safety issue. It is well-documented online, and in 2019 Toyota acknowledged this widespread issue with a Customer Support Program ZKC. However, this program only applied for a limited time, and since then more vehicles have had this same issue with faulty parts. Even vehicles under 150,000 miles no longer qualify for free replacement despite this being a known and widespread issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-12
  • VIN: JTEJW3EH8A2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My issue is not that I got a brake warning light (see attached image). My issue is that Toyota knows that this is an issue and will only fix it if you experience the issue before 12/30/2020 or at less than 150,000 miles. It is irresponsible of Toyota to know this is an issue, especially regarding the vehicle brakes (see screenshots of the letter from Toyota).

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
  • VIN: JTEJW3EH7A2
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Driving down the highway the abs srs air bag lights and the warning triangle all came on and then shortly after that a loud continuous beeping sound started and when my wife tried to pull over she realized she really had to cram on the brakes to get the car to stop... this scared the daylights out of my wife and thank god we didn't get in wreck!! But I dont understand why this is not a recall problem after all the other people I have read about with the same problem with the abs accumulator bleeding off pressure causing the pump motor to run abnormally long and in our case constantly to the point of no being burnt up and needing to replace.. my wife is the second owner of this car and we have had it since 2015... how is the window switch MORE OF AA CONCERN THAN FAULTY ABS ACCUMULATORS???

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-26
  • VIN: JTEDK3EH8A2
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I purchase The H4 LED’s from headlightexperts.com February 2022. There is a design flaw with their H4.bulb. The low beam have LED’s on both sides of the light bulb, however the halogen bulb has a shield so that light will only come out of one side of the bulb. The result of leds on both sides of the low beam is light hits the high beam reflector from the back side of the low beam led bulb, and blinds oncoming vehicles. When I contacted customer service via email, they kept saying I have the bulb at the wrong angle, and sent me links to 2videos for proper installation. I keep adjusting the bulb, at first with 45degree turns but then even less- still the light from the back side of the low beam bleeds onto the high beam reflector and blinds oncoming vehicles due to this design flaw. When I called the companies Phone number [XXX] it links to their sales department only. I attempted to explain the issue to their salesman who salesman who proceeded to dismiss the concern as my fault for not installing it correctly. There is no way to install this product correctly due to the fact it has low beam leds hitting a high beam reflector. When I pointed out the safety issue this product creates, I was told to look elsewhere for “some unicorn bulb that doesn’t exist.” He was rude, Hostile and argumentative.. When I attempted to explain the design flaw issue again, he selected would talk over me saying “bla bla bla bla bla” when ever I spoke like a 4yr old. In short there was ZERO concern for public safe their product puts at risk. I have included photos of both sides of their product showing high and low beam leds on both side of the bulb, as well as photos of a standard halogen bulb with the metal shield to prevent any spillage of low beam light onto a high beam reflector- INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-16
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5TDDK3EH8AS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE PARKED IN GARAGE OF RESIDENCE, DESTROYING THE HIGHLANDER AND THE CAR PARKED ADJACENT TO IT, ALONG WITH MOST OF THE HOUSE. PRIOR TO THE FIRE, THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. THE HIGHLANDER WAS STATIONARY, WITH THE IGNITION OFF AND PARKED IN THE GARAGE. A SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION INCLUDING INSPECTING BURN PATTERNS AND THERMAL DAMAGE INDICATED THE FIRE ORIGINATED AT THE FRONT OF THE TOYOTA HIGHLANDER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHERE THE FUSE PANEL, BATTERY AND STARTER/SOLENOID WERE LOCATED. ALL THREE SOURCES OF IGNITION REMAIN ENERGIZED WITH THE IGNITION OFF. THE UPPER PORTION OF THE PLASTIC HOUSING ON THE FUSE PANEL AND BATTERY HAD MELTED EXPOSING THE RECEIVERS FOR THE FUSES AND PLATES INSIDE THE BATTERY. THE ENDS OF THE RECEIVERS HAD ALLOYING ON THE RECEIVERS, BUT NO FAILURES WERE NOTED ON FUSE PANEL OR BATTERY. EXTREME THERMAL DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED ON THE CONNECTOR END OF THE SOLENOID WHERE MOST OF THE FACING HAD MELTED OR WAS CONSUMED. LINES OF DEMARCATION FROM EXTREME HEAT WAS OBSERVED ON THE REMAINING SECTION OF THE SOLENOID FACING. THE CABLE CONNECTING THE BATTERY TO THE SOLENOID WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE SOLENOID DUE TO THE EXTREME DAMAGED TO THE SOLENOID. THE TERMINAL CONNECTOR ON THE CABLE SUSTAINED ARCING AND/OR MELTING OF THE METAL TERMINAL. THE CONCLUSIONS WERE THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A FAILED SOLENOID ATTACHED TO THE STARTER ON THE 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. LAB ANALYSIS OF THE STARTER/SOLENOID REVEALED FAILURE AT THE CONNECTION END OF THE SOLENOID WITH BEADING AND ARCING ON CONTACTS INSIDE THE SOLENOID.

  • Summary: Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Scion xB, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2007 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2006-2011 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, and 2009-2010 Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
  • Consequence: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the switch, applying a lubricant if no abnormality is found. If abnormality is found, the PWMS circuit board will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 20, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is C0M.

  • Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
  • Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:SEAT HEATER/COOLER
  • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.
  • Consequence: Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.
  • Remedy: SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.
2014-04-09
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.
  • Consequence: If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable. General Motors sent notices to the Pontiac Vibe owners on September 15, 2014, that a remedy is available. The recall began on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.

  • Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
  • Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
  • Summary: Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
  • Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

  • Manufacturer: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
  • Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
  • Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
  • Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 COROLLA, VENZA AND MATRIX PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT. THIS RECALL IS AN EXPANSION OF A CAMPAIGN OF 3.8 MILLION OTHER TOYOTA VEHICLES ANNOUNCED IN 2009 FOR THE SAME ISSUE (SEE 09V-388).
  • Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
  • Remedy: TOYOTA WILL MODIFY OR REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR PEDALS ON THE SUBJECT VEHICLES. FLOOR SURFACE MODIFICATIONS ARE ALSO BEING CONSIDERED AND WILL BE INCLUDED FOR ANY MODEL FOR WHICH IT IS DEEMED APPROPRIATE. INITIALLY, DEALERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO RESHAPE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FOR THE REPAIR. AS REPLACEMENT PARTS WITH THE SAME SHAPE AS THE MODIFIED PEDAL BECOME AVAILABLE, THEY WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE DEALERS FOR THE REPAIR. CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE HAD THE PEDAL RESHAPE REMEDY COMPLETED WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE A NEW PEDAL IF THEY DESIRE, AFTER REPLACEMENT PEDALS BECOME AVAILABLE. IN ADDITION, TOYOTA WILL REPLACE ANY TOYOTA ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MAT IN A SUBJECT VEHICLE WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED MAT, FREE OF CHARGE. FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE THE PREVIOUS DESIGN ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MAT BUT DO NOT NEED OR WANT THE NEWLY DESIGNED ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MAT, TOYOTA WILL RECOVER THE PREVIOUS DESIGN ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MAT AND REIMBURSE ITS PRICE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN MARCH 30, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
2010-01-21
  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
  • Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 CAMRY, MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 COROLLA, COROLLA MATRIX, RAV4, MODEL YEAR 2010 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 SEQUOIA, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 TUNDRA VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.
  • Consequence: THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BAR IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PEDAL TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY. GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS FOR THE PONTIAC VIBE PLEASE SEE 10V-018. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AND WILL BE COMPLETED ON MARCH 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Negative 2010 Toyota Highlander car reviews

  1. Oscar Schneider 2024-05-21

The car is great overall, but the steering could use some improvement. The steer by wire system requires constant correction and has a different feel to it. The AWD was adequate for my wife this winter even without winter tires. The car has plenty of pickup when you need it! It's a shame that the base model doesn't have an outside temperature reading, especially considering its price point. It would be great if they could add a few basic options that all competitors have. On the bright side, I really like the interior setup, especially the backseat space. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get better than 18.5mpg with mixed driving, even with 8k on the odometer.

  2. Grayson Ledner 2024-04-21

I purchased this car based on the advertised statistics, which stated that it would provide approximately 18 miles per gallon in the city. However, my 2010 Toyota Highlander is only achieving 13 to 14 miles per gallon, despite having only 750 miles on the odometer. As a result, I have already had to fill up the tank four times, at a cost of approximately $45.00 each time. The total cost of owning and operating this vehicle, including car payments, insurance, and fuel, is approximately $850.00 per month. This situation is unacceptable and requires immediate attention.

  3. Jerrold White 2024-02-16

We recently traded in our 18-month old Tacoma truck for the Highlander, both from the same dealership. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the accelerator losing power three times in less than 2,000 miles. The second time it happened, we spoke to the salespeople who advised us to bring it in to the service department the next time it occurred. Two weeks later, it happened again, but fortunately, the third time it occurred was near the dealership. They kept the car overnight and replaced the accelerator pedal. It was a scary experience when the car wouldn't move, and I almost got hit on a main road. Despite owning a 2008 Lexus LS460, I lost confidence in Toyota.

  4. Emmanuel Bode 2024-02-07

The car's fuel economy is significantly below the expected range, with less than 11 MPG in the city. Additionally, there is a noticeable delay of at least half a second when pressing the gas pedal. These issues require immediate attention to improve the car's performance.

  5. Isac Hyatt 2024-02-06

The ride is much smoother compared to my old Ford Explorer and Jeep Commander. It drives more like a car than an SUV, and the ride is very quiet. Although the radio and controls for heat/AC are a bit confusing and awkwardly designed, I still find this car very enjoyable to drive. As someone who is 5'11'', I do find that my head almost hits the roof, so this car may not be the best fit for taller individuals. Unfortunately, the auto start feature that I got from the dealer came as a separate key fob, which means that I have to turn off the car from outside to get in and then restart it - not the most convenient feature. Additionally, the horn sounds like it is from a Corolla from 1985. However, I added the side body moldings for $200, which makes the car look less naked and provides some basic protection for the doors in parking lots. The only downside is that there is no auto trunk opening, which can be a bit of a drag. Overall, I have had this car for 4 weeks and I really like it!

Positive 2010 Toyota Highlander car reviews

  1. Lenny Considine 2024-11-04

This vehicle has been amazing! I have no complaints at all. If you can find a great looking used one like I did with under 100000 miles, go for it! After over 6 months, not one negative thing to say about this Highlander. It has run and driven perfectly.

  2. Cordelia Emmerich 2024-10-17

At 33 years old and with baby #2 on the way, I confidently made the decision to sell my 1998 4Runner and upgrade to the Highlander. I was able to get everything I wanted in the vehicle, and at a price point that was $8,000 less than the MDX. The Highlander boasts impressive styling both inside and out, and I am particularly impressed with its acceleration and gas mileage, especially for a larger SUV. As the ultimate family-friendly vehicle, the second-row seats offer an abundance of space, with plenty of room for cargo. I trust in Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability, and I am confident that this vehicle is the right choice for me and my family.

  3. Payton Haag 2024-09-07

This vehicle is fantastic! It drives smoothly and quietly, and has a huge amount of power. While it may roll somewhat on corners, it's tall, so that's to be expected. The interior design is absolutely fantastic, with plenty of room in the middle row and sufficient space for short adults in the third row (although I wouldn't recommend sitting back there for a long road trip). It's certainly big enough for kids, too. Additionally, it's really cool that the third row folds flat easily and the tonneau cover and insert from the middle row both stow in the car - no lost parts! The only downside is that the visibility out the back is limited, so backing up can be a bit of a challenge. Also, the slab-like hood and front fenders make it difficult to see the corners. Overall, though, this is a great vehicle!

  4. Mackenzie Weissnat 2024-08-25

This is the second Highlander we have owned. The car has a very smooth ride and is very quiet. The engine is strong and the transmission shifts very smoothly. The interior and exterior fit and finish are excellent. The navigation system is a good feature, although it requires some work to understand its operation.

  5. Eldred Lowe 2024-08-10

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It sounds like you did a lot of research before deciding on the Highlander as your second family hauler. We totally understand the importance of fuel economy and reliability when it comes to choosing a vehicle that fits your needs. It's great to hear that the Highlander met your expectations in those areas, as well as in ride comfort. You mentioned that you're averaging 19 to 20 city and 24 to 27 on the highway with the Base V6 package, which is impressive! And we totally agree with you that the recent recalls shouldn't scare anyone away from this vehicle. We encourage everyone to test drive one and see for themselves. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us!
