2002 Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

Common 2002 Pontiac Bonneville problems

The 2002 Pontiac Bonneville, a full-size sedan, has been reported by its owners to have several common problems. These issues range from engine and transmission problems to electrical and interior concerns.

One of the most frequently reported problems is the engine running lean due to a vacuum leak in the EGR tube. This issue can lead to poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system is designed to reduce harmful emissions and improve fuel efficiency by recirculating a portion of the exhaust gases back into the engine. A vacuum leak in the EGR tube can disrupt this process, causing the engine to run lean and perform poorly.

Another common problem reported by owners is the loss of power steering fluid due to steering rack failure. This issue can make the car difficult to steer, especially at low speeds, and can also lead to premature wear of other steering components. The steering rack is a critical component of the power steering system, and its failure can result in a significant safety hazard.

Electrical issues are also a common problem reported by 2002 Pontiac Bonneville owners. These issues can range from minor problems, such as interior lighting that frequently blows fuses, to more significant problems, such as the gas gauge not working properly. Electrical issues can be challenging to diagnose and repair, and they can also lead to other problems, such as reduced reliability and safety.

Interior problems are also common in the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville. For example, both rear windows have been reported to fail, and the moonroof assembly and motor have also been known to break. These issues can affect the car's comfort and convenience, as well as its overall value.

In addition to these specific problems, the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville has also been reported to have numerous minor engine problems, as well as issues with the climate control fan and both front heated seats. These problems can add up over time, leading to increased repair costs and reduced reliability.

Despite these common problems, many owners of the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville report that the car is reliable and comfortable, with a sporty look and excellent handling.

In conclusion, the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville has several common problems that can affect its reliability and safety. These issues include engine and transmission problems, electrical and interior concerns, and other minor issues. However, many owners of the car report that it is reliable and comfortable, with a sporty look and excellent handling. With proper maintenance and care, the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville can be a reliable and enjoyable car to own.

THEY ALSO INDICATED THAT VEHICLES NEAR HIGHER HUMIDITY AREAS WERE THE VEHICLES BEING RECALLED, SO THAT CONCERNED ME TOO, SINCE I LIVE ABOUT 8 MILES FROM THE PACIFIC OCEAN. I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING INHERENTLY WRONG WITH MY AIRBAGS AND I'D LIKE THE GM/THE DEALER TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS DEFECT REPAIR, BEFORE ANY HARMFUL INCIDENTS OCCUR IN MY VEHICLE! *TR

Negative 2002 Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Jesse Kuphal 2024-11-08

I love the looks and equipment! It's so much fun to drive under 60 mph. However, at high speeds, the vibration can be quite intense. The dealer has been very helpful and has put three sets of tires on, replaced the front lower control arms, and road force balanced the tires at least six times. Despite this, the vibration is still present. It seems that GM may have lower expectations for their cars than we would like.

  2. Chadrick Bruen 2024-11-03

This car has several issues that need to be addressed. The sunroof and windshield leak, the control for the heated seats needs to be replaced, and the steering wheel has a hang when turning left. Additionally, the recommended antifreeze for this car can cause radiator clogs and there is a gasket that leaks water into the motor. These issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs.

  3. Gay Jacobi 2024-10-20

Despite 10 trips to different dealers and numerous contacts with the Pontiac folks, water still leaks into the car during heavy rain storms. The back of the front seats had to be replaced as they fell apart on their own, as did the rear window regulator assemblies (both within two days, $530 each). Defective lights and wires falling down from behind the dash also had to be replaced. Unfortunately, Firestone tires have been problematic with two blowouts at lower speeds and Firestone dealers refusing to honor the warranty (similar problems with Saturn I had previously). Additionally, there are normal irritants such as an ashtray that rattles constantly and lug nut caps that keep flying off (the dealers want $6 each, junk yards sometimes are free).

  4. Irwin Grady 2024-09-12

The car has had two complete brake jobs, yet the brakes still squeak. Additionally, the front end vibrates when slowing down, even after new tires were installed. The interior design is my biggest complaint. The glove box is located too far under the dashboard to be of any use, rendering the trunk release useless. The headrests are also ineffective, as they require you to lean your head too far back to make contact with them. I doubt they would even provide support in a rear collision. The console armrest is too high, and the front seat backs keep coming apart if my children push their feet on them, as they are only held in place by a track system that clips together. Despite these issues, I am confident that the car can be improved with some adjustments.

  5. Davion Dietrich 2024-08-15

The comfortable seats convinced us that this was the car for us. The ride was incredibly smooth and quiet, and the handling was just great. However, we did experience some issues with the car in the first few months, such as trunk leaking, brakes squeaking, noise coming through front doors, CD playing going crazy, fuel pump rattling, headliner rattling, etc. Unfortunately, some of these problems have not been able to be corrected due to design problems or the fact that they could not be duplicated.

Positive 2002 Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Daren Towne 2024-10-10

We recently switched from driving Sevilles to trying out the Bonneville SSEi, which is built on the same platform as the Seville but costs $20,000 less. We found that the Bonneville SSEi is actually a better driving and riding car than its higher priced sister. While it may lack a few options such as a V-8, rear heated seats, wood trim, and the Cadillac mystique, the super-charged engine is a great performer. Let's face it, the Cadillac mystique is not worth $20,000. It's important to consider the cost of repairs when the warranty runs out, so keep that in mind when making your decision.

  2. Sam McGlynn 2024-09-16

12K mi now and not one problem. Great car, it rides and handles very well. It is comfortable and smooth on trips. It is a superior vehicle to the Impala and a much better value than the Cadillac Seville.

  3. Gregorio Daniel 2024-09-09

    I am 6'6

  4. Kolby Nitzsche 2024-09-05

The car has been a delight to own and drive. The 3800 Series engine is all as advertised and more. I get 25 +/- MPG on the highway and 18 +/- in town. Handling is excellent and response is as well. However, there have been a few issues such as a persistent leak on the rear spoiler that allows water to store in the trunk lid, causing inconvenience when opening the trunk after a heavy rain. Additionally, the brake pads needed to be replaced after only 24,000 miles and again at 50,000, which was disappointing. The rear window motor and heated seat element also failed, which was frustrating. Despite these issues, I still believe that this is a great car.

As a mechanic, I know that most malfunctions are caused by driver wear without maintenance, although some things just happen. It's important to note that all the complaints don't define this car. It's fun to drive, has great gas mileage, looks sleek, and has plenty of power and room. If anyone complains about that, kindly suggest they get a mini van. Lastly, I would like to add that I wish they would start making them again! :)
