Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

Common Pontiac Bonneville problems

The Pontiac Bonneville, a popular car model, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The most prevalent issue is related to the windows and windshield, particularly the power windows. This problem is seen across various model years, with the 2000 model year having the highest number of complaints.

Another common problem with the Pontiac Bonneville is related to the engine, specifically faulty engine parts. This issue is seen in various models, including the Grand Am, Grand Prix, and G6, with the Grand Am having the most complaints regarding engine issues.

The Bonneville model also faces issues with the power window mechanism, which is made of cheap plastic parts that break in the power window pulley assembly. This defect is common in many Pontiac cars, and GM dealers typically replace the entire assembly, which can cost around $450 per window.

In addition to these problems, the Bonneville also experiences issues with the ignition switch, malfunctioning door locks, grinding noises, and catalytic converter issues, particularly in the G6 model.

Lastly, the Bonneville is known to have problems with the windshield, with many owners reporting issues such as cracks and leaks.

In conclusion, the Pontiac Bonneville has several common problems, including issues with the power windows, engine, ignition switch, door locks, grinding noises, catalytic converter, and windshield. These problems can be costly to fix and may occur at varying mileage levels.

Latest negative Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Karson Murazik 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 1998

I purchased this car from my Dad a year ago, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. At first, it would shut off randomly, and then in October, the water pump blew out, which cost me $300 to repair. One month later, the Upper Intake Manifold cracked for the second time in three years, causing the engine to flood with coolant and the starter to blow when I tried to restart it. I have learned that the Upper Intake Manifolds on these cars are made of cheap plastic and tend to crack around 100k to 130k. Unfortunately, the repair bill for this issue is around $1200. As someone who has happily owned a 95 Grand Prix, 94 Trans Am, and an 02 Grand Am, I was disappointed by the Bonneville. However, I am hopeful that I can resolve these issues and enjoy the car again soon.

  2. Jayden Larkin 2024-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2000

When you purchased this car, you were hoping it would compare to your 94 Bonneville, but unfortunately it didn't quite meet your expectations. You've had some issues with the r&p steering, which had to be replaced twice before it was fixed. The fan blower motor also had to be replaced, but it still chirps. The dealership is currently trying to find a clunking noise near the glove box. You've also had to install a windshield and three alternators (although you're not sure why) and the noise is still there. Additionally, there is some wind and road noise in the front and back, and the front cup holders are a bit too small. Despite these issues, you still enjoy driving the car.

  3. Ted Conroy 2024-11-13

    Vehicle year: 1992

Bought used with 100k, right away the transmission 'slipped', but instead of replacing it, I got a full tune-up (plugs, wires, etc.) and it worked wonders! No more transmission slip and I saved $3000! It now has 218000 miles with the original transmission, shocks, and engine. There's no oil loss and it still has great power. This old goat shows no signs of dying anytime soon.

  4. Jesse Kuphal 2024-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2002

I love the looks and equipment! It's so much fun to drive under 60 mph. However, at high speeds, the vibration can be quite intense. The dealer has been very helpful and has put three sets of tires on, replaced the front lower control arms, and road force balanced the tires at least six times. Despite this, the vibration is still present. It seems that GM may have lower expectations for their cars than we would like.

  5. Jasper Hoeger 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 1995

Bonnie has been a decent vehicle. Although, one week after I purchased it, the sound system smoked, the ride control option with air shocks is great. It promotes a ride like some European performance sedans. Unfortunately, the engine is the first appearance of GM's 3800 II and has used oil since the day I drove it off the lot. There is no excuse for poor engine quality. The only reason I have kept the vehicle for this long (10) is that the ride is much better since I installed Michelin tires. I am disappointed with my experience and will consider other options in the future.

  1. Coy Gottlieb 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 1999

I travel frequently by car and have used this vehicle extensively! It has never required any repairs beyond regular maintenance. The ride quality is excellent, and I average 28-29 mpg. It has good acceleration when needed and handles very well. There is plenty of space to transport children and a spacious trunk. Whenever someone sees what I drive, they often comment, 'I used to have a Bonneville, I never should have sold it...' I don't think I can part with mine either.

I recently purchased the brand new Bonnie over an Infiniti I30. While the car rides perfectly and has lots of bells and whistles, I have experienced some issues with squeaks from the door and a slight rattle in the dash. These issues are unexpected from a car that costs over 34K. Unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop three times in the first three months of ownership. I even experienced water leaking into the trunk area during rain, which was caused by the factory not drilling drain holes into the trunk lid. Although the alternator was also faulty after only two months, the squeaks and rattles in the door and dash still persist after two trips to the shop. Overall, I find this to be a very typical GM car, plagued with squeaks and rattles.

As a car salesman who has driven many different makes and models of cars, I can confidently say that the GXP offers the most value for your money. It's incredibly fun to drive and has exceptional road manners. In my opinion, the so-called 'professional' reviewers have completely missed the mark when it comes to the GXP.

My car carries a load comfortably and is highly reliable. Although I have had to reset the transmission computer every other year due to sudden rough gear shifts, I still love the comfort and ride it provides.

When I bought this car a year ago with only 11,000 miles on it, I was looking for something with size but also wanted a sports car. Since then, I've put 165,000 miles on it and use it every day. I must admit, I haven't always been the best at taking care of it, but it has been incredibly reliable for the past 7 years. I've only had to change the O2 sensor once and the pulleys on the Turbo charger twice. Currently, I only need to give one strut some attention. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better performing vehicle for the money!
