Pontiac Bonneville problems

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.
The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.
The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

The Pontiac Bonneville SSEi is an excellent value for the power, comfort, and spaciousness it provides. It's hard to find a better deal at this price point. While it's not a direct comparison to foreign models, you'd have to look at much larger BMWs and Lexus to find something similar. The Bonneville may not match the quality or design of larger exotics, but it holds its own against domestic competitors like Buicks and Cadillacs. The only downside is that it's FWD. If it had a full horsepower northstar and RWD, it would be even more competitive with larger foreign models.

This car has been the best riding car and has required no repairs. It's a shame that GM stopped making this car.

Vehicle year: 1995
I confidently bought the car after totalling a 98 Mazda 626. It is an excellent car for travelling long distances, which I do frequently. Despite its age, it still has moderate gas mileage. Although I had to replace the transmission and the head gaskets blew and warped heads, the car has been great overall. It is worth noting that these cars do not resell for a decent price, but I paid only 6K in 2001, which was a great deal at the time. Even now, I could get a maximum of about 3K for mine.

I recently met a man who traded his 98 Bonneville for a newer model and regretted it. We both agreed that it's a reliable, stylish, and fun car to drive. Personally, I've only had to invest in routine maintenance and haven't experienced any mechanical issues. The body of the car is also in great condition.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I bought back in 2001 with 85K miles. It's been a great ride so far, and I'm happy to report that it still looks amazing with the white SSE and gold rims. One of the coolest features of this car is the heads-up display that shines the speed on the windshield. It also has a rear shock leveling system, an air compressor in the trunk to fill up tires, and a good stereo system with factory gain control. Other features include an electronic compass, tons of gauges, and 9-way power adjustable seats. The sunroof is a nice touch too! The 3.8-liter engine is dependable, fast, and handles very well with good tires. I get about 30 mpg on the highway and around 20 mpg in town. Overall, I'm a very satisfied owner. While there are some electronic problems developing with the gauges, the car still drives fine. Thanks for reading!

This car is a lot of fun to drive, and it's not bad on fuel consumption. It also has great looks. However, we did experience some issues with the steering rack and intermediate shaft. At 5,000 miles, we had to replace the steering rack, and at 26,000 miles, we had to replace the intermediate shaft with a new part. Unfortunately, at 40,000 miles, the cluck, cluck noise started again, and the dealer, along with GM, claims that there is no safety problem and that we should just live with the noise. As someone who is 55 years old, this experience has left me disappointed with GM, and I have decided that this will be my last GM product.

The best car I have owned yet! Although I had to change the alternator once, the 4-wheel anti-lock brake has gone out twice. I always use Castrol oil and change it every 3,000 miles. Even with 133k miles, it still has all the pep as when I first got it. The car is mechanically awesome!
Kellen Russel 2025-04-03
Vehicle year: 2005
This car is an absolute joy to drive, with excellent handling and a smooth ride. However, I have noticed some issues with the quality of the vehicle, particularly with the paint job. Despite my attempts to address this with GM, I have not received a satisfactory response and am considering taking further action through the BBB. As a loyal customer who has purchased 13 GM vehicles in the last 20 years, I am disappointed with the lack of attention given to my concerns. Nevertheless, I remain confident in my decision to explore other options, including imports.

Vehicle year: 1998
Not recommended! Although the looks, ride and comfort are excellent, it seems to fall short in terms of reliability. Unfortunately, the engine went out at 56,000 miles and it has already required a starter replacement. Typically, I am able to get 150,000 miles from V8 rear wheel drive cars before any repairs are needed.
Dane Smitham 2025-03-09

The car experienced several issues, including major trunk leaks, a fallen out engine, a smoking steering column, and a broken front grill. These issues were not unexpected, as they are known problems with this model. However, they were all fixed in a timely and efficient manner, and the car is now in good working condition.
