Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

Common Pontiac Bonneville problems

The Pontiac Bonneville, a popular car model, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The most prevalent issue is related to the windows and windshield, particularly the power windows. This problem is seen across various model years, with the 2000 model year having the highest number of complaints.

Another common problem with the Pontiac Bonneville is related to the engine, specifically faulty engine parts. This issue is seen in various models, including the Grand Am, Grand Prix, and G6, with the Grand Am having the most complaints regarding engine issues.

The Bonneville model also faces issues with the power window mechanism, which is made of cheap plastic parts that break in the power window pulley assembly. This defect is common in many Pontiac cars, and GM dealers typically replace the entire assembly, which can cost around $450 per window.

In addition to these problems, the Bonneville also experiences issues with the ignition switch, malfunctioning door locks, grinding noises, and catalytic converter issues, particularly in the G6 model.

Lastly, the Bonneville is known to have problems with the windshield, with many owners reporting issues such as cracks and leaks.

In conclusion, the Pontiac Bonneville has several common problems, including issues with the power windows, engine, ignition switch, door locks, grinding noises, catalytic converter, and windshield. These problems can be costly to fix and may occur at varying mileage levels.

Latest negative Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Dwight Weimann 2025-05-11

    Vehicle year: 2002

This car has been leaking on the passenger side since I purchased it. Despite taking it to the dealer five times, the issue has not been resolved. The floorboard is constantly full of water, and the car emits an unpleasant odor. Even eating in it is a challenge. I have reached out to GM for assistance, but their suggested solution was to roll down the window before closing the door. It is unacceptable to pay so much for a car and have to resort to such measures until the next appointment at the body shop.

  2. Loy Paucek 2025-05-10

    Vehicle year: 2001

Although I have experienced several issues with my car, I have taken the necessary steps to address them. I have had to replace the rack & pinion on the right passenger side, the back window regulator, several converters, coils, sensors, front wheel bearings, both tire rods, the water pump, radiator, and the tension pulley. Additionally, I have had to replace the valve cover gaskets and address a leak in the head gaskets. While these repairs have been frustrating, I have taken the necessary steps to ensure that my car is in good working order. I believe that with proper maintenance, my car will continue to serve me well.

  3. Tyrese Koelpin 2025-05-06

    Vehicle year: 2001

I'm glad I bought this car because of its great reputation for having a fuel-efficient engine and its fantastic appearance. However, I did have a bit of trouble with the transmission. Unfortunately, I had to replace it twice, once at 55000 and again at 120000 miles, which cost me $2600. The transmission shop informed me that these 'Bonnies' have a weak transmission. Despite this, I still love my car!

  4. Torey Wyman 2025-05-03

    Vehicle year: 2000

Despite my positive experiences with the Bonneville in the past, I must assert that the 2000 model has been the least satisfactory of the three I have owned. The vehicle has been plagued with numerous rattles, squeaks, and front-end issues. Additionally, I have been informed that the drive shaft requires replacement, and there have been some issues with strut squeaks. Although the new brakes have been noisy, the vehicle has remained dependable in all other aspects.

  5. Garry Yost 2025-04-29

    Vehicle year: 2001

This car has been a bit of a challenge as it has had some issues, but I am ready to move on from GM.

  1. Chase Morar 2025-05-12

    Vehicle year: 1997

Your dad purchased this amazing car brand new in August 1997. After he passed away in July 2004, he left it to you with under 90,000 miles. Since then, you have been driving it and it has now clocked 215,000 miles. It is, without a doubt, the best car you have ever owned. Apart from routine maintenance, you have only had to replace the exhaust system, struts, and the alternator. It is such a shame that GM decided to throw Pontiac under the bus. In the end, all Pontiac had were rubber stamped Chevys. Instead, they should have been allowed to develop newer cars.

  2. Ben Boyer 2025-05-12

    Vehicle year: 1992

This car is great! Congratulations on your purchase with 88,000 miles on it. It's the best car you've owned, with comfortable seats that make it perfect for a cross-country drive. The fuel economy is fantastic, and it rides very smoothly. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone and everyone!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've used this car primarily for work and put between 30,000 to 40,000 miles per year. I'm happy to say that my 2001 Bonneville currently has 157,000 miles and still drives like it's new!

This car was fantastic and a blast to drive. It was one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven and had plenty of power.

This car is a pure joy to own. In 150,000 miles there have been no repairs other than regular maintenance and crash repairs. The fuel economy is very good, better than some of my friends with much smaller cars. Just a note, this is just another in a long line of nearly flawless GM cars that I have owned. Bravo!!
