Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

Common Pontiac Bonneville problems

The Pontiac Bonneville, a popular car model, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The most prevalent issue is related to the windows and windshield, particularly the power windows. This problem is seen across various model years, with the 2000 model year having the highest number of complaints.

Another common problem with the Pontiac Bonneville is related to the engine, specifically faulty engine parts. This issue is seen in various models, including the Grand Am, Grand Prix, and G6, with the Grand Am having the most complaints regarding engine issues.

The Bonneville model also faces issues with the power window mechanism, which is made of cheap plastic parts that break in the power window pulley assembly. This defect is common in many Pontiac cars, and GM dealers typically replace the entire assembly, which can cost around $450 per window.

In addition to these problems, the Bonneville also experiences issues with the ignition switch, malfunctioning door locks, grinding noises, and catalytic converter issues, particularly in the G6 model.

Lastly, the Bonneville is known to have problems with the windshield, with many owners reporting issues such as cracks and leaks.

In conclusion, the Pontiac Bonneville has several common problems, including issues with the power windows, engine, ignition switch, door locks, grinding noises, catalytic converter, and windshield. These problems can be costly to fix and may occur at varying mileage levels.

Latest negative Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Enos Lakin 2025-03-14

    Vehicle year: 1998

Not recommended! Although the looks, ride and comfort are excellent, it seems to fall short in terms of reliability. Unfortunately, the engine went out at 56,000 miles and it has already required a starter replacement. Typically, I am able to get 150,000 miles from V8 rear wheel drive cars before any repairs are needed.

  2. Dane Smitham 2025-03-09

    Vehicle year: 1996

The car experienced several issues, including major trunk leaks, a fallen out engine, a smoking steering column, and a broken front grill. These issues were not unexpected, as they are known problems with this model. However, they were all fixed in a timely and efficient manner, and the car is now in good working condition.

  3. Gaston Franecki 2025-03-01

    Vehicle year: 2002

Sorry to hear about your experience with your car. It sounds like you've had a lot of issues with it, which can be frustrating. On the bright side, it's great to hear that you enjoy driving it when it's running well and that it gets nice mileage for a big car. Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts and experiences with us.

  4. Dock Torphy 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 1995

Yes, I bought it used. Unfortunately, the ride is not great and the car tends to break down quite often. Also, being a Pontiac, the performance is not exactly impressive. 'Sluggish' would be the best way to describe it.

  5. Austen McLaughlin 2025-02-08

    Vehicle year: 2000

Although the car has been a bit of a money pit, I am confident in my ability to address its issues. The rust under the gas cap and on the hood is a minor concern that can be easily remedied. I am determined to diagnose and fix the clunking in the front end to ensure a safe driving experience. Additionally, I am confident in my ability to resolve the gas gauge issue. With my expertise, I am certain that this car will be running smoothly in no time.

    Vehicle year: 1990

This car has had a single owner before it became a family car, belonging to my mom, my brother, me, my boyfriend (now husband), and back to me after a newer different make and model vehicle died on me. Despite its age, it has never had any major problems and has always had great power. While the air conditioning hasn't worked for a while and the windows roll up and down a little slowly now, it's truly amazing how long this car has lasted! Even with a bad transmission leak and a stereo that's starting to go out, it still runs as smoothly as it did at 232,000 miles!

  2. Arlo Robel 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 1998

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I'm selling my car, which has been an amazing companion to me. It has been with me through thick and thin, and has always provided me with safety and reliability. Even though it has some rust and minor issues, I still find myself admiring its beautiful lines. Unfortunately, it's starting to show its age with some maintenance hurdles and problems with the gas tank and filler. I'm not sure what to buy next, but I'm excited for the next chapter. By the way, it's a Pontiac, and it's too bad that GM doesn't make them anymore. Let me know if you're interested!

This has been such a great car to drive over the past three years! It has fantastic pickup and handles the road like a dream. The suspension setup is so smooth and comfortable, without any excessive body roll in turns. Plus, the dual zone HVAC is amazing - it always keeps you comfortable no matter what the weather is like outside. The only downside I've experienced is the ill-advised Intermediate Shaft in the steering column that was carried over from the Olds Aurora. Unfortunately, when your GXP becomes afflicted with this malady, you're stuck suffering through moans, groans, and a stiff feel in tight turns, as well as a notchy 'hitting a rock' feel in normal driving turn situations. However, despite this issue, I still think this car is amazing! It may depreciate quickly, but it's definitely worth it for the driving experience.

Your GXP is a head turner with white and gold tricoat paint. While the fuel economy is poor in city driving, the performance and styling of this big gas guzzling sedan outweighs this.
