1997 Plymouth Neon problems

plymouth logo

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1997 Plymouth Neon problems

Common Problems with the 1997 Plymouth Neon Based on Owner Complaints

  • Engine Roughness and Misfire
    • Owners reported engine roughness and misfire issues, particularly noticeable during initial cold engine starts. This problem could be resolved with a software update under warranty, addressing RPM fluctuation at idle, hard starts, and other related engine issues.
  • Body Paint Discoloration
    • Extended exposure of painted surfaces to front end covers or magnetic signs could cause a white "milky" or "fogged" discoloration on the vehicle. This issue was highlighted in a service alert, emphasizing the impact of prolonged coverage on the paint appearance.
  • Electrical System Wiring
    • A service alert addressed wiring concerns in the electrical system of the 1997 Plymouth Neon. It provided a revised wire splice procedure and related parts to ensure proper wiring maintenance and functionality.
  • Transmission Fluid Cooler Installation
    • Automatic transmission failure was a potential issue that could be prevented by installing a transmission fluid cooler. This preventive measure aimed to enhance transmission performance and longevity, reducing the risk of transmission-related problems.
  • Speedometer Malfunction
    • Some owners experienced speedometer issues where it only worked when pressure was applied. A solution involved re-soldering specific points on the circuit board to rectify the speedometer malfunction, providing a cost-effective fix for this problem.
  • Oil Filter Gasket Blowouts
    • Reports of oil pressure problems leading to oil filter gasket blowouts were noted. This issue could occur when increasing the engine's RPMs. Owners shared experiences of trying various oil filters to address this problem.
  • Engine Mount Wear
    • Front and rear engine mounts were prone to wear, especially in manual-transmission Neons used frequently in city traffic. The average lifespan of these mounts was around 100,000 miles, with recommendations to replace them with Mopar Performance replacement mounts for improved durability and performance.

These common problems reported by owners of the 1997 Plymouth Neon encompass safety, engine, body, electrical, transmission, and mechanical issues. Addressing these concerns promptly and with appropriate solutions is crucial to maintaining the performance and safety of the vehicle.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-17
  • VIN: 1P4GP44RXVB
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: ON JULY 17, 2006 MY BELT TENSIONER BROKE ON MY 97 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER SE. I HAD IT TOWED TO AN AUTO SHOP THE NEXT DAY WHERE THEY REPLACED THE TENSIONER AND PUT ON A NEW BELT. ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2006, (THE FIRST DAY DRIVING CAR IN THE RAIN SINCE REPLACING BELT & TENSIONER), WHILE DRIVING CAR IN THE RAIN 5 MINUTES, THE POWER STEERING WAS LOST AND THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON - THE BELT HAD COME OFF. RETURNED CAR TO REPAIR CENTER. THEY PUT BELT BACK ON AND COULD NOT FIND ANY REASON WHY THIS HAPPENED, OTHER THAN TO SAY THAT BELTS CAN FALL OFF MORE EASILY IN WET WEATHER. ON SEPT. 17, IT WAS NOT RAINING WHEN I WAS DRIVING CAR AT THE TIME, HOWEVER, THERE WAS AN AVERAGE SIZE PUDDLE THAT I DID DRIVE INTO AND AS SOON AS I DID I LOST MY POWER STEERING AND THE BATTER LIGHT CAME ON. PULLED OVER AND HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED. THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO A DEALER. THEY PUT THE BELT BACK ON AND COULD NOT FIND ANY REASON WHY IT WOULD HAVE COME OFF, OTHER THAN IT GETTING WET. I TOLD THEM THAT I HAD HEARD THROUGH A FRIEND THAT CHRYSLER VANS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM OF THE BELT COMING OFF IN WET WEATHER BUT THEY SAID THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF IT. THE ONLY 2 TIMES I HAVE DRIVEN MY CAR IN WET WEATHER AFTER REPLACING THE BELT TENSIONER, THE BELT HAS COME OFF. AFTER LOOKING UP SOME INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET (WWW.CARSURVEY.ORG), I FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH PLYMOUTH AND DODGE CARAVANS. ALL IT TAKES IS GETTING IT WET AND THE BELT COMES OFF VERY EASILY. THERE ARE OVER 100 EMAILS ON THE WEBSITE WITH COMMENTS AND COMPLAINTS ON THIS VERY ISSUE. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS FLAW IN THE CAR DESIGN. I WOULD APPRECIATE SOMEONE LOOKING INTO THIS AND CONSIDERING A RECALL. OUR FAMILY HAS 2 PLYMOUTH VOYAGERS AND HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH THEM UNTIL NOW. WE WERE CONSIDERING REPLACING THEM IN THE NEAR FUTURE BUT WILL DEFINITELY NOT BUY ANOTHER CHRYSLER AFTER FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND REALIZING CHRYSLER HAS NOT TAKEN ANY STEPS TO SOLVE THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *NM

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-04-19
  • VIN: 1P3ES27C8VD
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE EXPERIENCED A NUMBER OF MECHANICAL FAILURES TO MY 1997 PLYMOUTH NEON WHICH I PURCHASED TWO YEARS AGO. ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR BEGAN HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS; RADIO STOPPED WORKING, CLOCK DISPLAY WOULD BLACKOUT. THE MOST RECENT WAS EXPERIENCING A BLOWN HEAD GASKET AT THE TIME THE CAR WAS IN OPERATION. I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE CAR TO A SAFE STOP. HOWEVER, HAD THE GASKET BLOWN WHEN I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY JUST MINUTES BEFORE THEN, THE SCENE MAY HAVE BEEN MORE SERIOUS. I DISCOVERED OIL IN MY ANTIFREEZE. MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE RESEARCH AND LOCATED A WEBSITE THAT INFORMED CONSUMERS OF MANUFACTURE DEFECTS THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED ON THE NEONS FROM THE 1995 TO 1998. A NUMBER OF COMPLAINS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF CHRYSLER CORPORATION BY OTHER CONSUMERS. HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT SEE IT AS A PROBLEM. I HAVE NOTIFIED CHANNEL 5 TARGET INVESTIGATION NEWS TEAM IN CHICAGO, IL AND THEY ARE INVESTIGATING THESE PROBLEMS AS WELL. TARGET 5 INVESTIGATION MADE ME AWARE OF A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAIN THE CHRYSLER CORPORATION AND I THINK THESE MANUFACTURER DEFECTS WARRANT YOUR INVESTIGATION AS WELL, HOPEFULLY, PROMPTING A NATIONAL RECALL. REPAIRING A BLOWN HEAD GASKET AND POSSIBLY A CRACKED SEAL ON THE ENGINE, IS A VERY COSTLY PROCEDURE. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN YOUR FINDINGS. *JB
