plymouth logo

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 2000 Plymouth Neon problems

The 2000 Plymouth Neon is known for several common problems, primarily related to its engine, transmission, and electrical system.

  • Gauges Going Haywire: Some owners have experienced their gauges going haywire, which can be a sign of various electrical issues. This problem can be caused by a faulty instrument cluster or wiring issues, which can lead to inaccurate readings and potential safety hazards.
  • Oil in Coolant Reservoir: Another common problem is finding oil in the coolant reservoir, which can indicate a head gasket leak or other engine issues. This problem can lead to severe engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Power Steering Belt Tensioner Failure: The power steering belt tensioner is known to fail in the 2000 Plymouth Neon, causing squeaking noises in the serpentine belt. This issue can lead to power steering failure and affect the overall drivability of the vehicle.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a common problem in the 2000 Plymouth Neon, with many owners reporting issues such as difficulty shifting into reverse or drive, transmission slipping, and complete failure. This issue can be attributed to various factors, including worn-out clutch packs, solenoids, and internal transmission components.
  • Radiator Blowing: Some owners have reported that their radiators have blown, causing the transmission to fail due to anti-freeze leaking into the transmission.
  • Water Leaking into Trunk and Back Seats: Water leaking into the trunk and back seats is another common problem in the 2000 Plymouth Neon, which can be caused by a faulty sunroof drain system or a leaking trunk seal.
  • Engine Will Not Start: Some owners have reported issues with their engines not starting, which can be caused by various factors, including a faulty crankshaft sensor, ignition system issues, or fuel system problems.
  • Heavy Duty Brake Pads: Some owners have reported that the heavy-duty brake pads for stop-and-go driving conditions are not suitable for their vehicles, causing excessive noise and premature wear.
  • Poor Ground Connection at Strap: A poor ground connection at the strap can cause erratic windshield wiper operation, which can be a safety hazard while driving.

These common problems can significantly affect the drivability and reliability of the 2000 Plymouth Neon, making it essential for owners to address these issues promptly to avoid more severe damage and ensure the vehicle's safety.
