Plymouth Acclaim problems

plymouth logo

The Plymouth Acclaim is a mid-size sedan produced in the 1989 to 1995 model years. The Acclaim was Plymouth's updated replacement for both the similarly sized E-body Caravelle and the K-body Reliant. Badge engineering was employed to give Dodge and Chrysler their own versions of the AA-body Acclaim: the Dodge Spirit, the Chrysler LeBaron sedan, and the export-market Chrysler Saratoga. It was replaced by the Plymouth Breeze in 1996.

Platform

The Acclaim was a version of the Chrysler Corporation's AA-body 4-door sedan, which was an evolutionary development of Chrysler's extended K-car platform. Acclaim (and Dodge Spirit) production ended on December 9, 1994, after a short 1995 model year and the Cab-forward Plymouth Breeze was introduced as a replacement for 1996. The Acclaim was one of the last K-car derivatives produced by Chrysler. In all, just under half a million examples of the Acclaim were built in its 7-model year run.

Market positioning

The AA-body cars were badge-engineered triplets, as were most Chrysler products of this time. The Acclaim differed from its siblings primarily in wheel choices, bodyside molding, and fascias where it sported its unique taillights and the corporate Plymouth eggcrate-grille. Like the K-body and E-body vehicles they replaced, the Acclaim and Dodge Spirit were both marketed as mainstream variants, while the Chrysler LeBaron was marketed as the luxury variant. Despite this, there was substantial overlap in trims and equipment among each car. For example, a fully loaded Acclaim was almost similar to a base LeBaron in features and price.

In addition to its entry-level base model, the Acclaim was initially available in mid-range LE and high-end LX trim. LE and LX models came equipped with features such including premium cloth seating, power windows/door locks, premium sound systems, bodyside cladding, additional exterior brightwork, and on the latter 15-inch lace-spoke aluminum wheels. In spite of this, the base model accounted for nearly 85 percent of Acclaim sales. Unlike the Spirit, the Acclaim did not receive any sport-oriented models.

The Acclaim has also been characterized as the replacement for the smaller Reliant, though the Sundance launched in 1987 is closer than the Acclaim in most dimensions to the Reliant.

Common Plymouth Acclaim problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Plymouth Acclaim, several common problems have been reported:

  • Stalling and No-Start Issues:
Some owners have experienced stalling issues where the car turns off when the foot is taken off the gas pedal. This could be caused by various factors such as moisture in the MAP sensor circuit or other underlying issues affecting fuel supply or engine performance.
  • Brake Light Malfunction:
Another common problem reported is brake lights not working despite replacing the brake light switch, fuses, and bulbs. This issue could be related to wiring problems, ground wire issues, or issues with the multi-function switch that controls the brake lights and hazard lights.
  • Various Mechanical Repairs:
Owners have also mentioned the need for routine maintenance and occasional mechanical repairs like replacing tie rods, ball joints, struts, and shocks. While these repairs are common with aging vehicles, the Plymouth Acclaim has shown resilience and reliability for many owners despite the need for occasional repairs.

These common problems highlight the typical issues faced by owners of the Plymouth Acclaim, ranging from oil leaks to electrical and mechanical issues. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these problems can help ensure the longevity and performance of this vehicle.

Is Plymouth Acclaim a good car?

Plymouth Acclaim Ratings Overview

The average rating is a 4.2 out of 5 stars.

What is the Dodge equivalent of a Plymouth Acclaim?

Badge engineering was employed to give Dodge and Chrysler their own versions of the AA-body Acclaim: the Dodge Spirit, the Chrysler LeBaron sedan, and the export-market Chrysler Saratoga.

Who makes Plymouth Acclaim?

Chrysler

The Plymouth Acclaim was a mid-size sedan that was produced by Plymouth from 1988 to 1995. It was based on the Chrysler K platform, and it was a sister car to the Dodge Spirit and Chrysler LeBaron.

Why did Plymouth get discontinued?

By the 1990s, Plymouth had lost much of its identity, as its models continued to overlap in features and prices with its sister brands, Dodge and Eagle. Chrysler attempted to remedy this by repositioning Plymouth to its traditional target market as the automaker's entry-level brand.

  • Summary: MY 1995 VOYAGER WAS SUPPOSEDLY SERVICED FOR NHTSA RECALL 99V113000 AND MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 818/AIRBAG SYSTEM WIRING ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1999. AT THAT TIME THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. WHAT WAS DONE AT THAT TIME I DO NOT KNOW. IN FEBRUARY, 2007, I WAS DRIVING IN A SNOW STORM WITH THE REAR WIPER TURNED ON. I PARKED THE VEHICLE FOR A SHORT TIME. WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, I NOTICED THE AIRBAG LIGHT REMAINED ON. I SUBSEQUENTLY NOTICED THE REAR WIPER NO LONGER FUNCTIONED. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A STRANGE COINCIDENCE. LATER I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT GOING ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON YOUR CARS. THAT WAS WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT RECALL 99V113000. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO REFUSED TO REPAIR THE MALFUNCTION ACCORDING TO THE RECALL. I CALLED CHRYSLER WHO ALSO INFORMED ME I MUST PAY TO HAVE THE SYSTEM DIAGNOSED AND PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS IF THEY DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DUE TO THE RECALL CONDITIONS. I BELIEVE THE FAILURE THAT OCCURRED WAS RELATED TO THE RECALL AND CHRYSLER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE REPAIR AT NO COST TO ME.

Latest negative Plymouth Acclaim car reviews

  1. Stewart Kuhic 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 1995

That was definitely an expensive repair! It seems like the stabilizer bar and wheel alignment are common repairs needed for cars. Your car had a lot of trouble with both the front and back wheels, and the parts and connections to them. It cost you over $3000 in just two years.

  2. Bertrand Mertz 2024-09-27

    Vehicle year: 1993

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned you bought this car new in 1992 and had to change the transmission twice. Did you know that this model of transmission is known to be defective in many Chrysler models like the Voyager, Caravan, Dynasty, Acclaim, and more? Just thought I'd share that with you!

  3. Westley Lang 2024-09-20

    Vehicle year: 1991

You've had a tough time with your car, with three blown head gaskets, a speedometer/odometer that stopped working, and the air conditioning giving up after just five years. On top of that, it hasn't been great in the snow and the body panels have had some quality control issues. We understand how frustrating that can be.

  4. Art Wilkinson 2024-09-12

    Vehicle year: 1993

Extensive warranty work was done on the engine. Unfortunately, the A/C, transmission, and other parts broke down prematurely. After 125,000 KM, the car required several repairs such as the transmission, alternator, fuel pump, and A/C. We understand how frustrating this can be and we are here to help.

  5. Roderick Pacocha 2024-09-10

    Vehicle year: 1995

I recently purchased this car from a neighbor who is an acquaintance of mine and his. One of the best things about it is that it starts up in any weather condition and the AM/FM radio always works perfectly. It also has great gas mileage and doesn't burn any oil, even though it's almost ten years old. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Latest positive Plymouth Acclaim car reviews

  1. Joshua Carter 2024-11-22

    Vehicle year: 1993

Congratulations on your long-lasting car! It's heartwarming to hear that you and your husband bought it just before getting married. The car has been well-maintained, with only a few repairs like brakes, battery, and tires, and a single tune-up in its 7th year. It's impressive that the car has almost 200,000 miles and is still going strong. It's great that you plan on keeping it around for your older kids and as a 'kick around' car when needed. Thank you for sharing your story!

  2. Candido Medhurst 2024-11-11

    Vehicle year: 1992

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I originally bought it to pull a trailer, but it ended up being a great mode of transportation for my family. My three kids even drove it until they left home! At 150,000 miles, I had to rebuild the transmission, but the car is still going strong at 270,000 miles. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and long-lasting vehicle at a great value. Take care!

  3. Irwin Terry 2024-11-08

    Vehicle year: 1992

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I bought this car with 11000 miles on it, and it's been great so far. However, due to a growing family, we need more space. Thank you for understanding!

  4. Lloyd Corkery 2024-11-04

    Vehicle year: 1994

I've been driving this car for three years and I absolutely love it! It's been incredibly dependable and I wish I could buy another car just like it. I've had very few problems with it, aside from normal wear and tear. Overall, I'm really happy with my car.

  5. Mitchell Ullrich 2024-10-11

    Vehicle year: 1993

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you how amazing my Granny's car is. She bought it new in '92 and it's still going strong! It's a 2.5l 3spd that gets 35mpg and is quick, quiet, and smooth. I know it may look a bit old-fashioned, but trust me, it's much better than those pricey new cars. Even after 30 years, we can still find parts and have only had to do a couple of repairs, like the head gasket, O2 sensor, and a set of mufflers. We just need to find a replacement window and we're hoping to keep it for another 30 years! I can't help but laugh while passing each and every bank. :)
