1993 Mazda Mx-6 problems
The Mazda MX-6 is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive coupé manufactured and marketed by Mazda from 1987 to 1997 across two generations.
Mechanically identical to the Ford Probe, the Capella/626 and its hatchback platform mate, the Ford Telstar, these cars shared the GD (1988–1992) and GE (1993–1997) platforms. The MX-6 replaced the 626 Coupé, although it continued to share the same chassis.
The MX-6, 626, and Ford Probe were manufactured at joint-venture plants either by AutoAlliance in Flat Rock, Michigan, for the North American market, and by Mazda Japan for Asian and European markets.

Common 1993 Mazda Mx-6 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1993 Mazda MX-6, several common problems have been identified:
- Crank but No Start Condition and No Spark:
- This issue has been reported by 17 people and can be concerning as it prevents the car from starting. When a car cranks but does not start, it indicates a problem with the ignition system or fuel delivery.
- Possible causes for this problem could include issues with the ignition coil, spark plugs, fuel pump, or fuel injectors. A lack of spark can lead to the engine not starting despite cranking.
- To address this problem, owners may need to have the ignition system, fuel system, and related components inspected and tested by a mechanic to pinpoint the exact cause and make necessary repairs.
- Transmission Problems:
- Transmission problems are common in the Mazda MX-6, especially in the first generation models produced between 1987 and 1992. Owners have reported difficulty shifting gears, grinding noises when shifting, and clutch slippage.
- These issues can be caused by worn or damaged transmission synchros, clutch components, or flywheels. Repairs may involve replacing these components or even the entire transmission in severe cases.
- Preventive measures to avoid transmission problems include driving the car gently, avoiding aggressive driving, and ensuring regular maintenance and inspections to catch potential issues early.
- Electrical Problems:
- Electrical issues are another common complaint among Mazda MX-6 owners, particularly those with DX/LX models. These problems can affect the car's performance and reliability.
- Common electrical problems may include issues with the battery drain, alternator failure, power windows, power mirrors, central locking, and other electrical components.
- Resolving electrical problems often requires a systematic diagnosis to identify the faulty component, followed by repairs or replacements as needed to restore the electrical system's functionality.
These common problems with the 1993 Mazda MX-6 can impact the car's performance, reliability, and overall driving experience. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repairs can help owners maintain their Mazda MX-6 in good working condition.

This car is so much fun to drive, but it may not be the most practical choice for everyday use. If you're tall or have long legs, getting in and out can be a bit of a hassle. Additionally, maintenance costs can be quite high. While I love driving it, I do find it a bit challenging on the highway due to its low profile.

I've owned my 93LS since college and have put 90k miles on it myself. It has been incredibly reliable with almost no problems, even at 115k miles. It handles well in any weather condition (just make sure to get snow tires), and the trunk is spacious enough to fit all of my keyboard equipment. The torquey V6 engine is perfect for autocrossing, and the car still looks futuristic and fun. If you encounter any issues, there is a supportive online community of Probe/MX-6 owners who can offer helpful advice. I highly recommend getting one of these cars, as it is sure to exceed your expectations!

I understand that you purchased the car a few years ago. Unfortunately, the radiator had a leak when you bought it, but you were able to replace it. The CV joints went bad due to the boots leaking, but that's expected with a car of this age. The idle pulley lost its grease and snapped a belt, but that's also just an age problem that is going to happen with any car. There is a slightly funky exhaust smell, but that has been constant. The car uses/burns/leaks oil slowly, which may be due to valve cover/oil pan gaskets. The transmission had gone bad and been replaced before you bought it. Overall, it's a good car. However, the sunroof is very slow to open and you haven't tried it in a year or more because you're scared it won't close back. Additionally, the A/C has never worked and the main interior light burns out very fast.

I've owned two of these cars and they've been a blast to drive! Although I did experience an early valve problem with both, the dealer was able to fix it under warranty. I did have to replace the head gasket in one to fix a slow oil leak, but other than that, the engine has been very reliable. The interior has held up well with minimal wear even after 100k miles. The front seats are designed to be snug, which works great if you like to push it a little in the corners. However, after 10 years, the seats are a bit too snug for my liking. The back seats are not really usable for more than a few miles, but overall it's a true 2+2. I've only owned the 5-speed manual, so I can't speak to the automatic transmission, but it's definitely a fun car to drive!

Nice ride!

This car has been reliable for me, although I did have to replace the clutch once and axles twice. The engine, on the other hand, has been absolutely solid with no leaks. However, the interior could have been built better. The door panels are barely hanging on and the fabric is coming off. The driver's seat tends to tear on the left side if used frequently. The center console and cupholder have also experienced some issues. The backseat is quite cramped and may not be comfortable for anyone over 5'5.

This was my first real car, but unfortunately it turned out to be a lemon. Despite putting about 30,000 miles on it since I got it, I've had to replace the engine, transmission, and various other expensive parts. I used to make fun of people with Ford Probes (they share the same parts), but now I understand their frustration. I strongly advise against purchasing this car, as it will only lead to pain, suffering, and a lighter wallet.

Hey there! Before you make a decision, I just wanted to let you know that this car might require a lot of maintenance. It could end up costing you more than the car itself. Just something to keep in mind!
Erik Koch 2024-01-08
My car has been a reliable companion for the past 11 years, with only 7500 miles on it when I bought it. While it has some difficulty handling bad weather, resulting in two accidents, it still runs great. It may not be the best in snowy conditions, but it performs well in cold weather. The repairs can be costly, but it's worth it to keep such a dependable car on the road. It's important to budget for maintenance, as replacement parts can be expensive. Despite some wear and tear after 115,000 miles, the car still runs well overall.

Your Mazda has been reliable for long distance travel. The only thing to consider is that it may be too small for a family of four on long trips. However, it would be perfect for a teenager or someone who is single. Additionally, it is great on gas and has a fantastic air conditioner. The sound system is also top-notch.
