1999 Lexus Lx470 problems
The Lexus LX (Japanese: レクサス・LX, Hepburn: Rekusasu LX) is a full-size luxury SUV sold by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota since January 1996, having entered manufacturing in November 1995. It is Lexus' largest and most expensive luxury SUV. Four generations have been produced, all based heavily on the long-running Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs. The first-generation LX 450 started production in 1995 as Lexus' first entry into the SUV market. Its successor, the LX 470, premiered in 1998 and was manufactured until 2007. The third-generation LX debuted at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007. The fourth-generation LX debuted in October 2021.
The first-generation LX 450 had a straight-six engine and seats for seven passengers. The second and third-generations had a V8 engine powertrain, a welded steel body-shell combined with full-size steel ladder frame (body-on-frame construction), and seats for eight passengers. The fourth-generation model has a twin-turbocharged V6 engine powertrain and seats for seven passengers as standard and four passengers as an option. The second-generation LX 470 shared exterior styling with the Japanese domestic market Land Cruiser Cygnus.
According to Lexus, the "LX" name stands for "Luxury Crossover". However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, "Luxury Four Wheel Drive".

Common 1999 Lexus Lx470 problems
The 1999 Lexus LX470 is known for its reliability and durability, but like any vehicle, it has common problems that owners have reported over time. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Front Differential: The 2-pinion front differential in the 1998-1999 models is known to be weak and can blow if the vehicle is backed up uphill or used for winching from the front. This issue can be resolved by replacing the front differential with a stronger unit.
- Exhaust Manifolds: Exhaust manifolds can crack at around 80,000 to 100,000 miles, causing an exhaust leak and requiring replacement.
- Starter Contacts: Starter contacts need to be replaced at approximately 100,000 miles to prevent starting issues.
- AHC Accumulators: AHC accumulators, also known as globes, can fail if the previous owner used the wrong fluid, causing the membrane in the globe to dissolve and leading to AHC system failure.
- AHC Wheel Height Sensors: AHC wheel height sensors can rust and fail, particularly in wet or salty environments, leading to issues with the AHC system.
- Nav Unit: The navigation unit in the 2004 model can fail, requiring replacement.
- CV Boots: Leaky CV boots have been reported, particularly in vehicles with lifted suspensions where the angles have been changed.
- Check Engine Light due to EVAP system fault: This is a common issue across various model years, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty fuel vapor canisters, purge valves, or pressure sensors.
It is important to note that these issues may not affect all 1999 Lexus LX470 vehicles, and some of these problems may have been addressed through recalls or warranties. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and prevent these issues, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-09-17
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I WAS WAITING AT A STOPLIGHT BEHIND A HIGH VOLUME OF TRAFFIC AND STOPPING AND GOING AS THE LIGHT LET VEHICLES THROUGH. MY ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH A LOUD CONSISTENT ALARM. I PROCEEDED THROUGH THE LIGHT AND PULLED OVER AT THE NEAREST PARKING LOT. AS I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPOT, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD TO APPLY SIGNIFICANT FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. IN THE PARKING LOT UNDER SAFE CONDITIONS I TESTED THE MINIMAL BRAKING I HAD LEFT AND DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE HOME. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL SHOP AND THE ISSUE WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE ABS ACCUMULATOR PUMP HAD FAILED (HAD COMPLETELY SEIZED UP). THIS SEEMS LIKE A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW. I HAD A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME TO REACT TO THE ALARMS I WAS GIVEN. A FAILURE OF SUCH A CRITICAL COMPONENT CAUSES THE LOSS OF ALL POWER BRAKES. WHAT IF I HAD NOT GOTTEN THE WARNINGS I DID? I RECENTLY HAD A NEW PUMP INSTALLED AND I AM BACK ON THE ROAD. I AM VERY LUCKY THIS ISSUE DID NOT HAPPEN AT HIGH SPEEDS OR ELSE THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-09-10
- VIN: JT6HT00W6X0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: STARTED VEHICLE....ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AS WELL AS AN AUDIBLE BUZZER. DROVE THE TRUCK 3 MILES AND LOST ALL BRAKES, PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND HAD TO USE HAND BRAKE (EMERGENCY BRAKE) TO GET STOPPED.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-20
- VIN: JT6HT00W2X0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVING NORMALLY ON THE FREEWAY FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR. SUDDENLY, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS BECAME ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD, FOLLOWED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS BY A BEEPING ALARM. THE CAR WAS IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY AT THE NEXT EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE 1 BLOCK INTO A PARKING LOT. ONCE IN THE PARKING LOT, THE BRAKES FAILED COMPLETELY AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE VEHICLE WAS WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. FURTHER TESTING FOUND THAT WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE PEDAL WOULD GO DIRECTLY TO THE FLOOR WITH LESS THAN 5% EFFECT ON BRAKING THE VEHICLE. LATER INVESTIGATION BY THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THE BRAKE FAILURE TO BE THE RESULT OF A FAILED ABS MOTOR AND ACCUMULATOR. FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWS THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG THE 1998 AND 1999 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER AND LEXUS LX-470 VEHICLES. NO RECALL HAS BEEN REGISTERED, NOR WILL TOYOTA / LEXUS ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AS A REOCCURRING PROBLEM. (THOUGH CLEARLY THIS IS A PROBLEM WHEN ANY RESEARCH IS DONE). THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT RESULTS IN ALMOST A COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKING OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OFF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WARNING LIGHTS AND ALARM SOUNDED THAT A SERIOUS, FREEWAY SPEED ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-12-04
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, IT WILL SUDDENLY IGNORE THROTTLE INPUT, AND WILL BE IDLING ONLY. WHILE NOT STALLED, IT IS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE AND GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC. THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. TO REMEDY THE SITUATION, IT IS NECESSARY TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART. IT CAN BE A DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE IT HAS HAPPENED RIGHT AT THE ENTRANCE TO A MAJOR INTERSECTION, AND WHILE TRAVELING IN CONGESTED FREEWAY DRIVING. ONE REPAIR SHOP REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, BUT THIS HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. IT IS GETTING WORSE, AND OCCURS MORE FREQUENTLY THAN EVER. *TR
