The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1998 Ford Cab chassis problems

The 1998 Ford Cab Chassis has had its fair share of problems, with several issues reported by owners. This article will discuss the most common problems with the 1998 Ford Cab Chassis, focusing on the alternator belt, automatic transmission, ball joints, hard starting, and suspension problems.

  • Alternator Belt: The alternator belt has been a common issue in 1990 to 1994 model F-150s, including the 1998 Cab Chassis. The alternator belt is responsible for providing power to the vehicle's electrical system. When the engine makes chirping or squealing noises, it is an indicator that the pulley for the air conditioner or the power-steering is askew, indicating a problem with the alternator belt.
  • Automatic Transmission: The automatic transmission in the 1998 Ford Cab Chassis has also had its share of problems. If the TR/MLP sensor is faulty, the transmission is liable to fall out of alignment, causing the engine to flare as you shift the truck into fourth gear. This issue has been reported most commonly in 1994-1995 model F-150s, but it can also occur in other model years.
  • Ball Joints: The ball joints in the 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, including the 1998 Cab Chassis, have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely, requiring replacement. This issue is more common in vehicles that have been driven in areas with heavy rainfall or snow.
  • Hard Starting: Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s, including the 1998 Cab Chassis. Ford attributed this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module. Symptoms of the problem include vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start.
  • Suspension Problems: Owners of 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks, including the 1998 Cab Chassis, have reported problems with the front suspension system due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle. To fix the issue, newer, stronger leaf springs should be installed.

In conclusion, the 1998 Ford Cab Chassis has had several common problems, including issues with the alternator belt, automatic transmission, ball joints, hard starting, and suspension. These issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and replacement of faulty parts. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is recommended that you take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for inspection and repair.

What years were the 5.4 Triton bad?

The only one to really avoid is the 5.4 3v Triton which was in the F150 from 04-10. The smaller 4.6 Triton doesn't share any of those issues and, while not as fast, is very reliable. The 97-03 5.4 Triton is the 2v version and does not have cam phasers, nor does it have issues with plugs sticking.

Do Ford cab and chassis have less power?

Power and Fuel Economy

Comparing the average chassis cab to the average pickup, you'll find that the latter usually offers more horsepower and torque. This is true even when the two models offer very similar engines.

Why are cab and chassis trucks detuned?

It was explained to me that the manufacturer detuned them to meet emissions in case you put something like a box van on it or anything that would require more power.

What is the difference between a cab chassis and a pickup?

The pickup trucks tend to have curved frame rails extending rearwards from the cabin, improving the ride quality and distributing the weight of the vehicle. Chassis cabs typically sport straight frame rails. This makes the chassis cabs more compatible with all manufacturers and not just brand specific.

What is the difference between a chassis cab and a regular cab?

A chassis cab takes and replicates the pickup concept at the front of the vehicle. But instead of having a boxed bed, chassis cabs feature a reinforced platform that can be outfitted to wear a variety of body configurations based on a specific commercial need.
