1996 Chevrolet Prizm problems
The Geo Prizm and Chevrolet Prizm were compact cars that were rebadged versions of the Toyota Sprinter, a vehicle that the Japanese automaker Toyota never directly sold in the North American market. The Sprinter itself was derived from the Toyota Corolla. The Prizm was marketed under the Geo nameplate until it was discontinued after the 1997 model year. After that, the vehicle was marketed under the Chevrolet nameplate. General Motors (GM) referred to this and other Toyota Corolla derived vehicles as the GM S platform. The cars were produced from 1988 to 2001 (the last ones being sold for model year 2002) alongside the Corolla at NUMMI, an assembly plant operated as a joint venture of GM and Toyota. The Prizm was sold exclusively in the United States and succeeded the 1985–1988 Chevrolet Nova, which was also derived from the Sprinter and produced at NUMMI.
Production
All Prizms were built at NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.), a joint venture company between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, California. The NUMMI plant at Fremont had manufactured the Prizm's predecessor, the Chevrolet Nova, and would later manufacture the Pontiac Vibe, one of its replacements.
Production of the newly-rebadged Chevrolet Prizm began in late 1997 as the Geo brand was phased out, alongside the newest North American generation of the Toyota Corolla. The last Prizm was built on December 13, 2001, resulting in a brief 2002 model year.

Common 1996 Chevrolet Prizm problems
The 1996 Chevrolet Prizm has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is a clunking noise coming from the left front side of the car, which occurs when taking off or sometimes not all the time. This noise has been attributed to a loose lug nut, but it can also be caused by a problem with the half shafts or the motor mounts. The half shafts are known to go on these cars, and the motor mounts can also cause issues if they are not properly secured.
Another common problem reported by Prizm owners is a noise that occurs when the engine is cold. This noise is described as a vibration noise that is more obvious at idle and goes away once the engine warms up. This problem can be caused by several factors, including leaking spark plug wires, worn spark plugs, clogging injectors, or water in the fuel.
The 1996 Chevrolet Prizm's window regulator has also been reported to cause problems. In some cases, the window will only roll up a little bit at a time, requiring the driver to press the button multiple times to fully close the window. This issue has been attributed to a problem with the window motor or the regulator, which may need to be replaced.
The ignition coil inside the distributor has also been reported to fail on the 1996 Chevrolet Prizm. This problem has been reported by 54 people and can cause a variety of issues, including difficulty starting the car, stalling, and poor performance.
In some cases, the crank pulley/damper may also fail on the 1996 Chevrolet Prizm. This problem can cause a noise coming out at idle and may be more likely to occur if the car has not been used for an extended period of time.
In summary, the 1996 Chevrolet Prizm has several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues include a clunking noise from the left front side, a noise that occurs when the engine is cold, problems with the window regulator, ignition coil failures, and issues with the crank pulley/damper. While these issues can be frustrating, regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the car.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-07-17
- VIN: 1Y1SK5262TZ
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: 4 NEW TIRES WERE PURCHASED ON FEB. 7, 2007. THREE OF THEM WENT FLAT BETWEEN JUNE 9, 2008 AND JULY 17, 2008 AFTER ONLY 15,000 MILES WHILE RIDING ON THE INTERSTATE. THE TIRE STORE FOUND NO FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE 3 TIRES, BUT DID REPORT THAT THE VALVE STEMS WERE CRACKED. A POLICE OFFICER CHANGED THE TIRE ON 7/16 AND A SHERIFF DEPUTY WITNESSED THE TIRE CHANGE ON 7/17 (NO REPORT FILED). THERE WERE SMOG ALERTS EACH TIME. AN OIL-LUBE PLACE FILLED TIRES ON 7/12. THE TIRE DEALER AGAIN SAID HE FILLED THE TIRES ON 7/16. THERE WAS A SLOW LEAK FROM THE VALVE STEM. A DIFFERENT MECHANIC REPLACED TIRE ON 7/17 AND RETURNED VALVE STEM: DILL AIR ACP TR413 156 OT. I WAS NOT HURT, BUT I WAS ALONE IN THE LAST TWO CASES, AND STANDING ALONE ON THE INTERSTATE WITH VERY LITTLE PLACE TO GET OFF. IT WAS 91 DEGREES, AND AAA DID NOT COME FOR OVER 45 MINUTES. I HAD BEEN ON MY WAY TO TAKE MY 90-YEAR OLD FATHER TO A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT. FORTUNATELY HE WAS NOT IN THE CAR WHEN THE TIRES BLEW OUT. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A MEDICAL SITUATION TO HAVE HIM STANDING OUT IN THE HEAT. DILL AIR HAS ASKED ME FOR THE VALVE STEM. BEFORE I SEND IT, DO YOU WANT A PHOTO? LIVES OF 3 PEOPLE WERE RISKED CHANGING THE TIRES ON EXPRESSWAY. *TR
