2017 Bmw M240i problems
The BMW 2 Series (G42) is the second generation of the BMW 2 Series subcompact executive coupé, the successor in 2021 to the F22 2 Series coupé and convertible. The G42 2 is the first BMW vehicle designed by BMW of Mexico, and is produced in BMW's plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico since 2 September 2021.
Development and launch
Remaining a rear-wheel-drive-based model, the G42 is built on the CLAR platform with a roughly 50:50 weight distribution and shares many mechanical components and engine options with the G20 3 Series and G22 4 Series. Unlike its predecessor, the base second-generation 2 Series and M240i coupé is no longer available with a manual transmission and not complemented with a convertible body style. The launch models consist of the mild hybrid diesel engine 220d, the petrol engine 220i and 230i and the M240i xDrive.
Equipment
Standard equipment in the US market includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 10 speaker stereo, adaptive cruise control, tyre pressure monitor and Active Driving Assistant. What Car? found that the rotary controller for the satellite navigation was less distracting to use than the touchscreen. Top Gear magazine felt that the coupé's physical buttons were more user friendly than the touchscreen interfaces in other BMW models.

Common 2017 Bmw M240i problems
The BMW M240i, introduced in 2017, is a popular choice for those seeking a blend of performance and daily drivability. However, as with any vehicle, there are common issues that owners have reported.
- Vanos System: One owner expressed concern about the vanos system, which has been known to require engine removal for repairs in the past. However, there is no specific mention of this issue in the context of the 2017 M240i.
- Taillight Indicator Malfunction: A few owners have experienced taillight indicator malfunctions, which can trigger faults. BMW has been proactive in addressing this issue, replacing affected components as a goodwill gesture.
- Oil Leaks: BMW engines, including the N55 found in the M240i, are prone to oil leaks from the valve cover and its gasket. The rubber oil pan gasket can also leak, causing symptoms such as engine smoke, overheating, and puddles under the engine. The repair cost depends on the leak's extent and location, averaging £67.16 for a fluid leak repair.
- Water Pump Failure: The N55 engine's water pump can fail, leading to overheating, steam from under the bonnet, and high-pitched whining noises. The average quote for a water pump replacement is £341.14.
While these issues may seem concerning, it is essential to note that most are minor and do not occur frequently. BMW's commitment to quality control and the overall reliability of the M240i is evident in its performance and the positive experiences reported by many owners.
Is the M240i better than the M2?
Unless you're after a really specific driving experience and want a specialised M performance car, we think you're better off going for the M240i. It's almost as quick and more comfortable to live with.
Does the M240i handle well?

Paired with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive, the M240i is decidedly quick. But while it handles well enough to take on all comers at the local autocross, a lack of steering feel dampens the fun.
Does the 2017 M240i have a B58?
The B58 is part of BMW's modular engine family, each engine using a displacement of 500 cc (30.5 cu in) per cylinder, following the B38 and B48 engine. The B58 engine was named to Ward's World's 10 Best Engines four times, in 2016 (installed in the 340i), 2017 (M240i), 2019 (X5) and 2020(M340i).
How reliable is the B58 engine?
Is the BMW B58 Engine Reliable? The short answer is yes. When maintained correctly and frequently with high-quality parts, the B58 is a very reliable engine - especially compared to older BMW straight-six engines like the N54 and N55.
