2017 Nissan Armada problems

The Nissan Armada (retrospectively referred to unofficially as the Nissan Pathfinder Armada) is a full-size SUV manufactured by Nissan for the North American market. From 2003 to 2015, the first-generation Armada was assembled in Canton, Mississippi based on the Nissan Titan. From mid-2016 onwards, the second-generation Armada has been built in Yukuhashi, Kyushu, Japan and shares the same platform as the Nissan Patrol, with American-specific modifications, and went on sale in late mid-2016 as a 2017 model. A luxury version of the Armada has been sold as the Infiniti QX80 (originally QX56).

First generation (TA60; 2004)

The 2004 model Pathfinder Armada was unveiled on April 17, 2003, at the New York International Auto Show. Developed under Carlos Ghosn's NRP (Nissan Revival Plan), development was done in September 1999 to 2003 under lead designers Shiro Nakamura and Diane Allen and chief engineers Yuzo Sakita and Larry Dominique. In January 2001, a final exterior design by Giovanny Arroba had been approved by Sakita, Allen, Nakamura, and Nissan executive management, with the final design freeze being completed in July 2001. It is assigned the platform code TA60.

Prototypes based on the Y61 Patrol were hand-assembled as mules from 2001, with the first TA60-specific prototypes being completed and sent to testing in early 2002. Design patents were filed in 2003, with production starting on August 14, 2003, and going on sale on October 1, 2003.

The Armada had a 5.6 L VK56DE V8 engine that made 305 hp (227 kW) and 385 lb⋅ft (522 N⋅m) of torque. This was mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, and the Armada had a choice of either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. There are some Armadas that are capable of using E85. It has a towing capacity of up to 9,000 lb (4,000 kg).

The rear door handles are installed on the "C" pillar as part of a Nissan design tradition that started with the 1986 Nissan Pathfinder. When the four-door Pathfinder was introduced, Nissan chose to conceal the door handles as a part of the "C" pillar trim to visually make it appear like a two-door truck with a camper shell, with conventional door handles on the front doors.

The switch to the Armada name occurred in September 2004 for the 2005 model year, where it received new badges without "Pathfinder." The 2005 model year also included a backup camera.

Common 2017 Nissan Armada problems

The Nissan Armada, a full-size SUV based on the Titan pickup truck, is known for its luxurious interior and smooth ride, thanks in part to its active air suspension system. However, this system can develop problems over time, leading to suspension issues that affect the vehicle's performance and safety. Here are some common problems with the Nissan Armada 2017 based on complaints from owners:

  • Suspension Warning Light: The Nissan Armada's air suspension system has a network of sensors, airbags, control modules, and a compressor to maintain the vehicle's height. If any of these components fail, the suspension warning light will illuminate, indicating a problem with the system.
  • Control Panel Failure: The Armada's electronic control unit (ECU) or control module regulates the air suspension system. If this computerized equipment fails, the vehicle cannot rise and drop optimally, affecting the overall ride quality.
  • Sensor Faults: The Armada's wheels are equipped with sensors that collect data and transmit it to the ECU. Over time, these sensors can deteriorate, leading to incorrect data transmission and suspension issues.
  • Air Compressor Failure: The air compressor generates pressurized air and pumps it through the springs to lift the vehicle where necessary. When the air compressor wears out, the amount and intensity of air reduce, affecting the SUV's movements.
  • Air Spring Failure: The air spring is in constant motion, which creates friction in the system. This friction causes the springs to wear out at the top and bottom, preventing the vehicle from maintaining a proper height even when the ECU sends the instructions.
  • Valve Block Failure: The valve block directs the air from the air compressor to the springs. When the valve fails, it is difficult for the compressed air to lift and drop the vehicle, affecting the entire suspension system.
  • Airbag Damage: The airbag stores the compressed air and releases it when the ECU directs. However, the airbag may leak or bust due to punctures and dry rot, reducing the amount of air available for the suspension system.
  • Nose Dive: When the suspension wears down, it cannot provide as much resistance to the weight of the car coming to a stop. This results in a "nose dive" where the rear end of the car pops up while the front end dives down, affecting the vehicle's stopping distance and safety.
  • Transmission Issues: Some 2017 Armada owners have reported transmission issues, including hesitant and erratic shifting, which may indicate a problem with the transmission or torque converter.

In summary, the Nissan Armada 2017 is prone to various suspension issues, including control panel failure, sensor faults, air compressor failure, air spring failure, valve block failure, airbag damage, nose dive, and transmission issues. These problems can affect the vehicle's ride quality, safety, and overall performance, and it is essential to address them promptly to avoid further damage and costly repairs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
  • VIN: JN8AY2NC0H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE6H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: On [XXX] my vehicle engine would not turn over. It then lost complete power moments later. The battery was recharged and reinstalled. I attempted to start the vehicle again and it drained the battery. I installed a NEW battery on [XXX] and the vehicle worked properly. On [XXX] I attempted to start the vehicle and the it drained the battery. This time, I called Nissan Customer Service and was instructed nothing old be done until a NISSAN DEALERSHIP ran diagnostics on the vehicle. Obviously, I had to call for a tow because the battery was dead. The tow truck driver was able to jump the battery and I drove to Ron Marhofer Nissan in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to have the diagnostics performed. After explaining the problems to the service technician, I was told that SOME Nissans (regardless of model or year), have been experiencing this problem, and the only fix was a battery saver update to the body control module. To date, I have not had any issues since the battery saver update was performed. The issues are, 1. This is a known problem affecting multiple Nissan models, 2. A Nissan Dealership is the only place this problem can be diagnosed or fixed, 3. The only way an owner becomes aware of this problem is after multiple battery issues, and ultimately, a trip to the Nissan Dealership, 4. Nissan is forcing owners to pay for this update that is necessary for their vehicle to run properly, 5. Nissan controls all aspects of the repair and has a monopoly over it INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE5H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: Was driving on a smooth road when suddenly airbag light on dash came on flashing. All the steering wheel buttons are working. Brought car to mechanic's shop to scan obd2, no dtc codes. Mechanic says they don't know what it is without a code. Nissan has been shady lately with technical service bulletins TSB instead of recalls. TSB according to Nissan hq is a repair at the discretion of the dealer meaning that they do not have to repair it even while it was under warranty. I had some piston slapping noise and burning smell coming from engine bay while under warranty the dealer Mechanic said," the noise is normal that of a suv and the burnt smell was the peanut packing oil burning off the outside of the engine". There was a TSB put out a few months later saying that Nissan acknowledged a defective short block in the engine causing abnormal wear on the piston. I brought it into the dealer and they refused to replace the short block and damaged cylinder. NHTSA needs to up their game and force these auto companies to be accountable. Years back my first edition Honda accord v6 had failed brakes that made me have an accident totaling the car. Veered off side of highway to minimize harm to others. Three years after the accident a recall on that models brakes came up. I was never given money for the totalled car by Honda. They need to be held accountable. Please take action and force the recalls instead of waiting for more people to be injured. Just look at the complaints on this make and model, why hasn't an investigation even begun? Airbag should be a top priority in recalls. Especially a blinking light with no explanation is a ticking time bomb that can set off an airbag at any given notice worst yet not deploy when there is an actual accident.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE8H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: My vehicle was having intermitten BCI (Backup Collision Intervention) malfunction lights on the dash. On one occurrence it caused my vehicle to slam on the brakes suddenly at 20mph, it is definitely a safety issue. I replaced both brake switches which solved it temporarily but now it is on constantly. It has been scanned with various Nissan scan tools and no errors are found. I have read endless forum posts of Armada owners having this problem and the dealerships are giving them the run around with no clear solution.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-29
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE3H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I have had to replace the brake switch twice in this vehicle and it is under 35k miles. Other Nissan models have had this recalled. Once it begins to fail, the car will not start because it doesn't detect the brake is depressed. It also sets off the BCI Malfunction warning randomly and while driving, which impacts cruise control and brake safety. I can send invoices of repairs from dealership if helpful.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE9H9
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The red airbag warning light began flashing on my 2017 Nissan Armada on Friday, April 19, 2024. I took the vehicle to Wood Nissan of Lee's Summit for them to diagnose the issue. I was told the airbag control module had failed as well as the left side (driver side) curtain airbag. The dealership checked for recalls and found none. Non-moving vehicle components, like the airbag system, are designed to last the life of the vehicle and sudden and unexplainable failures like my vehicle experienced presented a risk not only to me, but potentially to other owners of the same model year vehicle. This vehicle has been well maintained with regular dealership visits and has never been in an accident of any kind as I am also the original owner. In searching for airbag system recalls, I found that there were various recalls on Nissan Armada model years just prior to and after my 2017 model and I am concerned there is a system issue that needs to be addressed directly by Nissan and the airbag manufacturer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: JN8AY2ND6H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Although I have a brand new battery, there is a short in the system that causes it to drain entirely when turned off. At least twice a month, the battery will die because it won't hold a charge when not operating. This is especially challenging when it is very warm in the summer. Once the battery is jumped, I have to run the vehicle for 30 minutes to recharge and hope it is full. I've been told it's a known defect but not yet a recall, but I can cite many examples of how this creates a safety issue when I am unable to jump it repeatedly with my portable jumper. As it is an electrical issue, this needs to be addressed and cited as a recall to stop the insanity!

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-12
  • VIN: JN8AY2NC4H9
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Left side driver air bag. Air bag light on. Repair to replace airbag needed at a cost of approximately $2,000 in order to get Massachusetts state inspection sticker. One week later, light back on, now estimate from dealer for $3,400 to replace the harness that the airbag sits in. We can't afford to get this second repair. Should manufacturers be responsible for a required safety feature such as an airbag? We won't be able to get it inspected next year with the blinking airbag light on. We will be driving around with a car with no left side airbag because we can't afford to replace and we will need to get a replacement car next year as the light flashing required to be fixed before Massachusetts will provide an inspection sticker.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-16
  • VIN: JN8AY2NC5H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Middle section of instrument panel lights are out. This is making it hard to see your speed while driving at night and in turn takes your eyes off the road for longer. Service center couldn't believe that a LED instrument panel would go out so soon. Additionally, something drains the battery if the car sits for more than a day. Several times I have not been able to start the car both at home and away. Battery has been replaced 3 times in the last year and a half. Last battery pulled was tested as still good by the service center. There were no warning lights or messages for these issues.

LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-24
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE2H9
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: BCI Malfunction warning appeared on dashboard and immediately triggered all of the following lights to appear on dashboard: lane assist, rear collision, front collision, ABS, lane assist, 4wd. Within 2 days car then started to apply breaks while trying to pull forward to park. Further escalated same week to applying breaks randomly while driving down the road with no obstructions in any lane. This poses a major safety hazard to all occupants of car along with others on the road as it can cause a collision of this car slows suddenly without warning.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-20
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE9H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEATS
  • Summary: There are several electrical problems with this vehicle that through research has proven to be a problem with several people with this vehicle. The speedometer lights only illuminate half of the numbers, which can cause an issue when its dark and you can't see your speed. The battery seems to be drained in about a year after installing new battery. The right rear tv in the headrest does not work properly as well as the cooled and heated seats on the driver side. This does not necessarily cause a safety problem, but it does seem to be assisting in draining the battery. This morning the car would not start, but when trying to turn the car off the vehicle remained on, no matter what was tried to turn off. It is a fear that the vehicle will cut off while driving and would put the driver and passengers in danger. This has been an ongoing issue and Nissan claims that this is a personal issue, due to it not being under warranty. When forums are created and several people are having the same issue, it is concerning and Nissan needs to take care of this situation.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-13
  • VIN: JN8AY2ND1H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Car is has been having BCI Malfunction warning come up. This has happened numerous times since purchasing. It has been taken to the dealership multiple times for this issue. They have replaced brake switch sensors and even the battery and calibrated everything and the problem continues to persist. This has left us stranded on the side the road with the car not starting. It has caused sudden braking while driving on interstate with no warning and nothing to cause this reaction… two Nissan dealerships that have looked it it play it off as nothing meanwhile I keep reading of more people having similar issues with this vehicle. This needs to be further investigated before someone is out in a deadly situation

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-29
  • VIN: Jn8ay2ne6h9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag light on the dash started blinking in 12/2020 and was repaired under warranty in 1/2021. Was diagnosed as passenger curtain airbag. Airbag light started blinking again in April/May 2022. Diagnosed again as passenger curtain airbag. Repaired in August 2022, at a cost to me of $2800+. Picked car up on September 3, 2022. Airbag light came back on on the 6th after my daughter exited the passenger seat. Dropped car off on the 7th and it has been at the dealership ever since. Now they want me to pay $2600+ to have the wiring harness replaced. I have reported the issue to Nissan and the dealership has been working with Nissan. I have already paid to have this safety issue repaired. So far Nissan or the dealership has not agreed to pay. This is a safety issue. This is not a luxury item or an add on. I don’t feel safe having a passenger in the front seat. This is a known issue with this model. Even the dealer agreed. Nissan does not know how to fix it. They keep doing high cost repairs at a cost to the consumer which is not right.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-18
  • VIN: JN8AY2ND3H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: It’s my starter switch I had to have it replace twice once last year and the year before and this morning I hit into my truck which is z9-18-22 to go to work and everything came on but the switch didn’t so I couldn’t start it and for everything else to come on it’s not my battery so on Monday I am taking it back to the Nissan place to get it replace again this will be the third time for the same thing the engine switch to start the truck so this will be the third time it’s once a year around the same time for the same thing but yet you guys says it’s no recall on it have to be something causing it and each time it’s costing me 600.00 each . Who have that money to keep on replacing the same thing so it have to be some kind of fault with the switch .

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-05
  • VIN: JN8AY2NE9H9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle’s brake light switch has failed and been replaced twice. When this happens: 1. the rear brake lights do not illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed (which poses a serious safety hazard when driving) 2. If the vehicle is off, the vehicle will not start, given it requires the brake pedal to be pressed and used this switch as the means to confirm that. This is also dangerous because it’s left me stranded in dangerously cold weather. Nissan is already aware this is a pervasive problem on 2017-2021 Armadas, as the switches are prone to failure. They even issued a TSB notifying dealers of the problem and instructing them to cover replacements for vehicles still within the bumper-to-bumper warranty, using a new “updated” part number, but one just as prone to failures. After doing some digging and speaking with other 2017-2021 Armada owners, I’ve discovered some have already had to have the switch replaced as often as every 3-6 months - with each occurrence leaving owners stranded and/or without functioning brake lights.

Negative 2017 Nissan Armada car reviews

  1. Gennaro Ankunding 2024-11-01

Hi there! I've had my car for less than a year now. While it's a 4x4, I've noticed that the SL version doesn't come rewired for towing lights, but it does have a hitch welded to the chassis. One downside is that there isn't enough leg room in the back seat for small kids. Unfortunately, the Throttle body and MAF went bad, causing the car to run rough. To make matters worse, it just hit 62000 miles, which is just enough for the warranty to expire. Despite these issues, I'm still hopeful for the future and will consider my options carefully before buying another foreign car. Thanks for listening!

  2. Clifton Schuppe 2024-07-02

I purchased my 2017 Nissan Armada in September with high hopes, but unfortunately, it has been in the shop for multiple issues. As a loyal customer to the Nissan Brand for many years, I was disappointed to experience such problems with my Platinum Armada. Despite its nice looks and bells and whistles, the issues started the day I took it home and it has been in the repair shop for a total of 12 days over 3 trips. I'm wondering if I made the wrong decision in buying a model in its first year on the market, but I'm hopeful that the situation will improve. I have to say that this experience has been painful, but I'm looking forward to getting my vehicle back and seeing how it performs. Stay tuned for part 2 of my story!

  3. Theo McKenzie 2024-05-13

The car was great for the first four years, providing a powerful and smooth ride. However, after reaching 80,000 miles in its fifth year, the torque converter failed. Despite this being a known defect covered by one of the many Technical Service Bulletins for this car, Nissan has not issued a recall for the issue. Unfortunately, customer service was not helpful in resolving the issue. The repair cost for the car is estimated to be at least $3k, and possibly more depending on the extent of the damage to other transmission components. It is worth noting that Nissan's powertrain warranty only covers 5 years/60k, which is a poor warranty for such a major component. Based on this experience, it may be worth considering purchasing a Toyota instead.

  4. Casimir Doyle 2024-02-22

I really wanted to like this car. I had high hopes for it. However, I traded a Chevy Tahoe for my 2017 Amada Platinum 4WD and initially loved it until it rained and snowed. The car has a lot of electronic safety features, but they are too sensitive. When it rains heavily or when there is a small snowflake on the bumper, the front bumper sonar reports a 'front radar obstruction' issue. The car interprets this as you being close to crashing with something, so you get uncontrollable beeping that can only be stopped by turning off the sonar from the central console. Additionally, every time this happens, all your radio presets for FM 2 or XM 2 & 3 (there are three sets of presets) will be lost for 24 hours. After roughly 24 hours, the presets often (not always) come back. I have taken the car into service twice for this and brought them video evidence (I have filmed the driver's console during a rainstorm showing the 'front radar obstruction' error) but the dealer has returned it both times stating it is working as expected. Therefore, this is a $50K car that apparently was manufactured to work only in clear sunny days.

  5. Wilton Kuhic 2024-02-01

I bought my 2017 Nissan Armada brand new and absolutely loved the sleek design, spacious interior, and all the upgrades I chose. It was the perfect fit for my family. Although I didn't take it on many long-distance trips, I always made sure to keep up with the maintenance. Fast forward to 2022, it still looks great with less than 60,000 miles on it and I still take it in for regular maintenance. Unfortunately, I recently experienced an issue where my SUV felt like it was running out of gas, but I knew that couldn't be the case since I had just filled up the tank. It turns out that the transmission was the culprit and it cost me $5k to fix. To make matters worse, one of the new parts ordered from Nissan turned out to be faulty, leaving me without a vehicle for over a month. I was told that the new part should arrive from Japan at the end of the month, which means I'll have been without my car for almost two weeks. This is actually my third Nissan, but I think it will be my last. My mechanic mentioned that he sees fewer issues with Toyota vehicles.

I understood he Tahoe LTZ. Purchase price was over 10,000 more than my new Armada 4 wheel drive Platinum. The Armada is by far the better deal. None of the nagging creeks and rattling of the LTZ. Better power, more technology, much nicer interior. I will not buy another Chevy product

There are so many things to love about the Armada! It has plenty of room for everyone with its 7 leather seats, and the Bose Speakers and video screens on the back of the driver and passenger seats make for a truly enjoyable ride. Plus, the headphones and tow set up are a great bonus. The only downside is the miles per gallon of gas, but it's definitely worth it.

We purchased our '17 Platinum AWD Armada in July 2017 for an OTD price of $57,9. After living with it for a few months, I have some feedback. The leather used for the steering wheel, door, and center console armrests seems thin and may not hold up well. The rear passenger doors close with a small sound that makes them seem cheap. The factory floor mats are thin and feel cheap. When you push and release the brake pedal, it makes a loud noise, like they forgot a rubber damper to deaden the sound. However, the Armada moves well once you stomp on it, aside from a vibration issue at 3k RPM. The captain chair configuration adds to the refinement feel, and the extra USB ports in the rear of the center console are great. The auto climate control could be more consistent, and the fan for the rear is pretty loud. Despite these issues, the Armada looks great and has a luxurious interior that gets lots of compliments from guests. I'm going to have the seat heaters looked at, as they seem to be either blazing hot or off. The seat cooling works fine, but it's nothing to gloat over. The MPG rating is not great, but it's expected for a big V8. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to enjoying it for years to come!Overall, I like it! However, I was a little disappointed in the quality of some of the items. The vibration issue is something that is hard to live with, and I will be escalating my concerns until it gets resolved. At this price, I suppose there are some compromises, but I do feel that the previous generation Armadas felt more solid and possibly drove better.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that this car is both quiet and comfortable. It's also quite spacious, so you'll definitely appreciate the running boards. I've had this car for over 3 years now, and I've only had to replace the windshield wipers and change the oil. It's been a great ride so far!

Running well. No problems. During the first year, I had to replace the battery at my expense. I also had to tow the vehicle twice before Nissan replaced the brake switch, which kept it from starting. However, I did get reimbursed for towing. I then had to leave it overnight for repair of a slow oil leak, which apparently was there since manufacture.
