Nissan Altima 2009 problems
The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.
The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.
The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common Nissan Altima 2009 problems
The 2009 Nissan Altima is known to have several common problems, primarily related to the crankshaft sensor, transmission, and acceleration issues.
One of the most frequently reported problems is a failure of the crankshaft or camshaft sensor, which can cause the engine to stall while the car is moving or prevent the vehicle from starting. This issue has been reported by many drivers, and some sensors have been recalled by Nissan, so it's essential to check if your model is on that list. If it is, replacement of your failed sensors could be covered.
Another significant issue with the 2009 Nissan Altima is transmission problems, specifically with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some drivers have reported that the CVT is causing shuddering or jerking when accelerating, and in some cases, drivers have even reported total transmission failure. This issue has been more common in earlier models, and the warranty for Altimas from 2007 to 2010 was extended due to this CVT issue.
Additionally, some drivers have reported that their Nissan Altima won't accelerate, particularly when the car is going 55 mph or above. This issue could be due to a wide variety of reasons, such as a faulty mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensor, or fuel filter, among other things.
The 2009 Nissan Altima has also been reported to have issues with the catalytic converter, which can fail and cause the Check Engine light to illuminate. If this issue is not addressed promptly, it can lead to more severe problems with the vehicle's engine.
In summary, the 2009 Nissan Altima has several common problems, primarily related to the crankshaft sensor, transmission, and acceleration issues. It's essential to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to avoid more severe issues with the vehicle's engine or transmission.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1N4AL21E69N
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I purchased this car and the dashboard is melting and sticky. It’s affecting visibility to the point where I found myself trying to lift up to look overtop of the blinding glare on my windshield due to my melting dashboard and got into an minor accident Like was reflecting off the dashboard onto the windshield obstructing my view and resulted in me rear bumping into the rear of another car that was towing a very small trailer that I couldn’t see through the reflection on the windshield. Since then im noticing almost every dashboard on a Nissan Altima look the same if not worse and absolutely has to and needs to be acknowledged by Nissan for Nissan Altimas everywhere, not just in Florida. A recall NEEDS to be issued to resolve this very serious safety hazard. I’m lucky no one was injured. PLEASE address this issue so people can get the dashboard repaired without costing them even more money than they already paid for your defective product.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-17
- VIN: 1N4AL21E49N
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: There's an obvious issue with the steering lock system in 2009 Altimas that Nissan fails to address with a recall. They opened an extended warranty period that ended in 2020 apparently, with no notification from the manufacturer or dealership that this was happening. Also, I have been seeing complaints from owners who did get the steering lock box replaced at that time and are again having an issue where they are not able to use their cars for the very same issue. This needs an immediate recall as this shows negligence on the part of the manufacturer as well as the dealerships to notify owners. An owner should not be liable for costs to fix such issues that are the responsibility of a manufacturer. This is also a safety issue as the car is not reliable and puts the lives of drivers at risk while they can be found stranded in unforeseen and dangerous situations.

- VIN: 1N4AL21E59N
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Parked car at a coffee shop, turned off engine, exited and locked doors. Upon coming back to vehicle, the vehicle would not start. We tried jumping the vehicle battery, that did not work. We tried replacing the battery in the key fobs, that did not work. We inserted the fob into the a lot near the steering column and that did not work. We had the car towed to an auto repair shop who stated the key fobs needed to be reprogrammed, but they didn’t have the equipment to do so. We called a locksmith the reprogram the fobs, but the locksmith was not able to do so. He said the vehicle returned 6 BCM codes. He was able to remove all but 2 and recommended I take care to Nissan. Had car towed to Nissan and they stated the steering column module lock needed to be replaced (quoted $1425 + tax). I mentioned the service campaign from 2017, but I was told my car’s VIN was not eligible for the campaign and repair would be my responsibility. Why is a known issue not being covered by Nissan??

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-13
- VIN: 1N4AL21E99N
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I went to Autoworx on February 9, 2023 to purchase a 2009 Nissan Altima. The vehicle was very nice, looked good, no warning lights or anything. Drove great for about a week or 2. Then the car started breaking without me pressing the breaks. So I returned the car to Autoworx to have them check it out. The mechanic was assuring that the problem had been taking care of. After making another large payment that day, I left drove the car about a week. That's when the car started shaking. I mean shaking hard too and the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light comes on the dash board. So I take the car back to them on Monday March 13, 2023. The mechanic says "oh, make an appointment for Friday and I'll take the car to the shop so I can see what is going on". I made the appointment & continued to drive the car. In the days between Monday to Friday, the car began shaking harder. Suddenly, on Thursday March 16, 2023,while driving home the car stops accelerating. I had to keep turning the car off and on to get it going. On Friday, March 17, 2023 I arrived at the Autoworx location at 10:30am (the appointment time). When I arrived no one was there. We sat and waited for nearly an hr and a half. Once they arrived they looked at the car, drove it away and came back. After sitting there for 2/3 hours, the Owner [XXX] called me outside to inform me that the Catalytic Converter was bad (which they knew on Monday when I came in) and by me driving the car longer, the Transmission has went out. At this point I am FURIOUS! Because at NO point did they tell me that the car needed a Catalytic Converter. So we sat there a little longer with no way to go home. [XXX] then comes and mentions "I'll get you all an UBER". He ordered the Uber (just to get us away). I have looked into the Carfax on the 2009 Nissan Altima and found that the Odometer had been rolled back SEVERAL times. I bought the car at 121,000 miles. After, looking at the Carfax the car has darn near 300,000 miles on it. I got ripped off INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like the Altima is a great fit for you. I love how smooth the ride is and how sporty it looks. It's great that you were able to compare it to other cars in its class and find that it's a good value. Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope you continue to enjoy your Altima!

If you're a fan of the G35 but not the price, this car is perfect for you. Other than the badging and grill, it's nearly identical, with the same 3.5-liter engine found in the G35 or 350Z. It may have a little less bling than the G cars, but I spent thousands less for more or less the same car. Unlike the G, it's front-wheel drive, which I prefer for bad weather situations, but it's still a rocket. I've had absolutely no problems with it, and the build quality is good.

I recently traded in my 2009 Honda Accord EXL-4ycl because I wasn't satisfied with the braking and acceleration. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the Altima after test driving it. The Altima has a silky smooth powertrain thanks to the CVT transmission. I purchased a used 09 Altima that was in almost showroom condition for 16k. If you're looking for a 4 cyl vehicle with great performance, this is the one to purchase!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Nissan car. I owned it for 8 years and it was a great commuter car. I never had any major issues with it, except for replacing the brake starter switch 6 months after I bought it. The Bose audio system was top of the line and I really enjoyed it. The car was very reliable, just like most Nissans. The CVT never gave me any trouble. The SL package with heated leather seats was a nice touch. The engine always ran smoothly and had good to great acceleration, although there was occasionally a 3/4 second hesitation when punched. The audio system was a bit outdated, as it pre-dated Airplay or any LCD-type display, but it still had textual radio displays and (gasp) a 6-disc CD changer. The car only required normal maintenance such as oil changes, rotations, and a couple of 60Kers. When I sold it in '19, it was still in great condition. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience!

I bought my 2009 Nissan Altima brand new. I was searching for a new car and went to a local car show, where they had a variety of sedans on display. As someone who is 6'5'' tall, my first concern was whether I would fit comfortably or not. Unfortunately, most of the cars didn't have enough head or leg room, which eliminated 90% of the options. However, after considering the price range, basic features, and comfort, I finally found this car. I opted for the bigger engine for more control and better handling. Even after driving almost 60,000 miles, I still love this car. Although I did have an issue with the front windshield cracking within the first month, the dealership replaced it without any hassle. Overall, this car has been a great investment for me.

I am the owner of a 2009 Nissan Altima, which unfortunately has not been running lately. Despite having only 63,635 km on its odometer and being kept in a cozy garage, the car has been experiencing issues. On September 28, 2020, I drove the car to a dentist's office and upon returning, the car would not start. After researching the issue, I discovered that it was a failure of the ESCL system, which has been a common problem among 2009 Nissan Altima owners. While it has been frustrating to deal with, I am hopeful that I can find a solution to this issue. I understand that replacing the ESCL can be costly, but I am determined to find a solution that works for me. Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic and grateful for the time I have spent with my Nissan Altima. It's been a week since I got the ESCL replacement part for my car's currency issue. I did some extensive research and found out that there were many 2009 Nissan Altima owners in North America who faced similar problems with their ESCL units. I was curious to know if Nissan had issued a recall for this issue, but the information I found was conflicting. While some owners got their ESCL units replaced for free, others had to pay over a thousand bucks for the same. Although there was a recall in the US, I couldn't find any reference to it in Canada. I reached out to the Nissan Canada Customer Care Centre and received a letter from them. While they expressed empathy, they also mentioned that the warranty parameters had already been exhausted and they couldn't provide any financial assistance. They also clarified that the warranty extensions were not corrective measures, but simply additional coverage to assist with potential repairs in the event of a failure during this time or KMs. They also mentioned that they didn't have me registered as the owner of the VIN, so the information wouldn't have been sent to me. Hope this helps!I've been receiving phone calls and mail from Plaza Nissan for several years now, offering to show me their latest Nissan vehicles. It's clear that they knew my phone number and mailing address when they wanted to sell me a car, but unfortunately, they didn't know who I was when there was a recall. The letter I received was signed by Sandra, the Customer Care Specialist. In the very first paragraph, she states that Nissan is interested in winning lifetime customers. About sixteen years ago, I purchased a Nissan Sentra for my son, but he complained that it was unreliable. Despite his complaints, I purchased a Nissan Altima anyway, which turned out to be a terrible mistake. Now, I understand what my son was talking about. The Nissan people have certainly lost two lifetime customers. My son has been happily driving a Toyota for a couple of years now, and I'm heading to the Toyota dealership as soon as I have my 2009 Nissan Altima towed to a scrap yard. The car has 63,635 km (39,541 miles) on the odometer.

This car has been rated 4 out of 13, but our experience has been less than satisfactory. Despite having 125,000 miles, we have had to replace the transmission three times, all of which were covered under warranty. Unfortunately, the third transmission is still making noise, and we will need to replace the front wheel bearings again. The radio display is often blank, and the A/C blows cold air on its own schedule, making it necessary to drive with the windows down. However, we appreciate the fresh breeze and the feeling of being at the beach, even in stop-and-go traffic. Overall, we believe that this car may not be the best choice for everyone.

Although I initially had high hopes for this car, it unfortunately stranded me over the weekend due to the well-known steering column issue. Despite there being no prior warning signs, the red 'key' light came on and I was unable to start it in a mall parking lot. However, the issue was resolved today under the extended warranty, which should have been a recall. While it is worth noting that parts are not always readily available, and some customers have had to wait up to a month for repairs, I am disappointed in Nissan's handling of this issue. Nevertheless, I remain confident in my decision to move on from this car.

I have identified several issues with my Nissan Altima, including a recent problem with the transmission. However, I am confident that Nissan will address this issue and provide a satisfactory resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I was initially attracted to this car due to its body style, overall appearance, and the smoothness of the CVT. However, after owning it for about 17 months, I have noticed that the luster has faded. In my opinion, the visibility is very poor and the gas mileage is just okay. Unfortunately, I recently hit a deer on the freeway while going about 65 mph. Thankfully, neither myself nor my passenger were injured. However, the damage to the car was extensive and the repair bill to my insurance company was $9000. Although I wish it had been totaled so I could have returned to driving a Honda Accord, I still appreciate the car for what it is. Overall, I believe that there are some areas where the car could be improved, but it still has its positive qualities.
