The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander phev problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Door Latches: Some models built between May 6, 2015, and March 14, 2016, experienced malfunctions in the door latching mechanism, potentially leading to doors opening while the vehicle is in motion. Affected cars require new latches to be installed by a Mitsubishi dealer.
  2. ECU Relay: Vehicles manufactured between December 5, 2014, and March 31, 2016, had issues with the ECU relay overheating, causing engine stalling. The solution involves replacing the relay to resolve the problem.
  3. Parking Brake: Outlanders produced from the start of production until January 21, 2016, faced problems with the parking brake caliper boot allowing water ingress, leading to corrosion and reduced parking brake effectiveness. An inspection by a technician at a dealership is necessary for affected vehicles.
  4. Electronic Stability Program: Some models made between August 4, 2016, and January 22, 2018, had interruptions in the braking function of driving assistance systems like the electronic stability program (ESP). A software update is required to rectify this issue.
  5. Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): Certain Outlanders equipped with AEB and built between August 5, 2016, and November 6, 2017, experienced a software problem. This can be resolved with a simple update at the dealership.
  6. Airflow Sensor: Early Outlanders had issues with corrosion on the airflow sensor affecting engine performance. This problem should have been addressed, but it's advisable to consult with a Mitsubishi dealer for confirmation.
  7. Fuel Leak: Vehicles constructed between July 21 and September 12, 2015, may have a fuel system connection problem leading to fuel leaks. Inspection by a technician at a Mitsubishi dealer is necessary to address this issue.

These reported problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that may arise with the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to ensure optimal performance and safety.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

  • Summary: I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. ON FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021 PASSENGERS BEGAN TO COMPLAIN THAT THE RIGHT-SIDE SEAT BELT (ON THE 2ND ROW OF SEATS) WOULD NOT FASTEN. AFTER ARRANGING FOR PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE (LEFT-HAND SEAT) FOR A WHILE, I FINALLY QUIT DRIVING TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE MYSELF. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THE BUCKLE, I GAVE UP AND STARTED CALLING AROUND FOR THE PART--BUT COULD NOT FIND IT. FINALLY I NOTICED A RECALL NOTICE ONLINE FOR THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE IN 2014-2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS. ON MONDAY (APRIL 26) I CALLED SCOTT ELDER MITSUBISHI IN CEDAR PARK, TEXAS TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR, BUT WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THEY ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE PART AND COULD NOT OBTAIN ONE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. I THEN CALLED THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY TO LEARN WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED FOR THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT IS A 2019 AND HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME A SATISFACTORY ANSWER, NOR ANY ALTERNATIVE RECOURSE TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE. AS STATED ABOVE, I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. I CANNOT DO MY JOB WITH AN UNUSABLE SEAT BELT. SWITCHING PASSENGERS TO THE OTHER SEAT WON'T ALWAYS WORK BECAUSE I OFTEN PICK UP 3 OR MORE PASSENGERS. EACH DAY I AM WITHOUT THE USE OF THE VEHICLE FOR WORK IS COSTING ME $250-$300 PER DAY (NOT COUNTING BONUSES).

Negative 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander phev car reviews

  1. Angus Bosco 2024-10-15

I purchased the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Model 2019 from Surrey Mitsubishi in December 2019. Unfortunately, the vehicle has some manufacturing defects that have caused it to malfunction. Despite taking it to the dealership twice, the issue has not been resolved and I am currently unable to use the PHEV feature due to the vehicle not charging. I have expressed my concerns to both the dealership and the manufacturer, but have yet to receive a satisfactory response or solution. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving this issue.

  2. Aidan Erdman 2024-08-17

I was really excited about the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. It had all the safety features I wanted, including surround cameras and accident avoidance features. I was ready to sign on the dotted line. However, I was disappointed to learn that it didn't have an integrated navigation system. I've had integrated navigation in all my cars since it was first introduced. I tried to convince myself that I could live with navigation through the vehicle from my phone, but then I found out that when you're using a navigation app on your phone, you can't use any other app features in the vehicle. I think it would be great if Mitsubishi offered integrated Navigation as an option, even if it was at an additional cost. Overall, I'm still a fan of the Outlander PHEV, but I hope they consider adding this feature in the future.

  3. Carroll Romaguera 2024-07-29

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, I would recommend considering other options besides the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. While I was initially drawn to this car for its innovative green technology and the promise of high mpg/gallon and a federal tax incentive, I have found that the 100% electronic controls can be frustrating to navigate. However, with some time and patience, you can adapt to the new driving experience. I did have a concerning incident where the car began to reverse without a driver due to a technical issue, which resulted in some damage to my property. While Mitsubishi was not as helpful as I would have liked, I was able to file a claim with my insurance company for the damages. Additionally, I experienced a fuel system malfunction that required a software upgrade. Overall, I believe that this car still needs some improvements before it is ready for sale, and I would encourage potential buyers to consider other options.Let me tell you about the gas mileage. The car can get anywhere from 14-100mpg, with 50-100mpg on the freeway during a long road trip. However, the gas tank is small, so you'll need to fill up frequently. This car may not be the best choice for long commutes or road trips. Additionally, the gasoline engine is not very efficient. If you're considering purchasing a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, keep in mind that it may be an overpriced and poorly tested software package. It's important to live close to a dealership, as not many people know how to work on the car.

  4. Enid Nader 2024-01-14

Pros: The vehicle boasts quality materials and an enormous cargo space, all at a good price point after incentives. However, it's worth noting that the acceleration may feel sluggish and the front leg room may not be enough for taller individuals. Additionally, the battery range is quite limited.

Positive 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander phev car reviews

  1. Westley Keebler 2025-03-28

On December 30th, I went to the dealer and traded in my Prius. I am absolutely thrilled with my purchase! The car has 5 braking modes that can stop the car by itself, and 3 driving modes. If you're ever confused, just let the computer do its job - it's way better! The instant pickup is great (not like a sports car), and the mileage is good. The cabin is well-insulated, so you don't hear any road noise. It handles better in corners, and I'm enjoying driving it more and more every day. Just keep in mind that it's a regular SUV meant for daily commutes. I drive 20 miles one way daily.

  2. Judge Dietrich 2025-03-01

I am a loyal Mitsubishi customer and this is my 5th Mitsubishi, 1st new Mitsubishi, and 3rd Outlander. I have owned other cars inclusive Toyota, Honda, Subaru, VW, and Mercury but time after time Mitsubishi wins when I calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (purchase price, the expense to run, and depreciation) for different vehicles. Mitsubishi's have the best value compared to other cars. When buying a car, I focus on customer reviews, what I want in a vehicle, reliability, and the financial reality of operating the vehicle. This makes the decision process much easier since you are buying a car based on your needs and real-world usage. I find both Edmunds and Fueleconomy.gov give you access to the best customer reviews/real-world usage information. If you read the professional reviews you would be led to believe the Outlander PHEV has limited range, gets poor gas mileage when the battery runs out, is slow, and loud. However, I have found the opposite on all accounts when compared with both my gas Outlander and other Hybrids or PHEV that are rated higher. My review below points out real-life usage over a year that debunks the negative comments by the professionals. Over the last year, I am getting 59 MPG for all of my drives which is double the MPG I had on my old gas Outlander. I work from home so my driving habits are the ideal match for a PHEV. Most of my drives are short local trips of approx 30/50 miles and I charge my car after almost every local trip. The Outlander PHEV is more flexible than an EV with great tax credits. I highly recommend Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV for anyone looking for a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective vehicle.I am getting 60 to 100 MPG for local driving, which means a tank of gas lasts me over two weeks, and I can travel 700 to 1,000 miles on a single tank. During long trips, I get 32 to 40 MPG and a range of 250 to 350 miles, depending on the weather. The battery operates more efficiently in temperate climates, and not using the heat or AC reduces the draw on the battery. Having a PHEV on long trips takes away any range anxiety and is more efficient than most vehicles on the road. I have found that long trips provide few opportunities to charge due to availability, time, cost, and ease. However, with a PHEV, charging is convenient and easy. Even in urban locations, charging options tend to be out of the way, full, or cost more than gas. On my longer trips, I use its default hybrid mode, which gives me great MPG (36-42) and range (350-400 mi). Home charging has been easy and affordable, costing around 80 cents for a full charge, and I get 20 to 30 miles on the charge. When it's warmer, I have gotten as high as 40 miles per charge, but I constantly get 30 miles driving on local suburban/country roads when not using heat or AC. When you compare the cost of home charging to fuel cost, you save over $2 per trip. I ran the numbers and found that I am saving over $500 per year on fueling my car with electricity and gas. This number takes into account both my home electric and fuel costs. Additionally, the tax credit makes the value of the car even more obvious. The Outlander is a great car to drive, offering comfort, quietness, and versatility for any distance, weather, or terrain. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it still has plenty of power when you need it, and you can always take it out of ECO mode for an extra boost. It comes with all the high-end features you need without being too flashy. What sets the Outlander apart is that it's a car first, with technology that enhances the driving experience. Unlike some other cars that prioritize technology over driving, the Outlander is a quality car that will save you money and make driving enjoyable. If you're in the market for a PHEV SUV or car, you should definitely check out the Outlander. It's one of the few PHEV SUVs on the market and the only one in its price range, making it a top contender. I highly recommend making the leap to an Outlander PHEV, as it truly stands out from the competition.

We are thrilled with this vehicle overall. It offers great value, especially when you consider all the federal, state, and local rebates that come with it. Compared to other crossover SUVs with hybrid or electric technology, it is priced very competitively. Although some corners were cut to lower the cost, such as the quality of some of the interior elements, they seem minor to us. The only thing we wish could be improved are the front seats, which can be uncomfortable for longer drives. However, we plan to use a lumbar support pillow for our next road trip. The battery range for EV only driving is around 20 miles, which is good. If it were longer, it would mean a heavier vehicle with less cargo room, so we think it's a good balance. The cargo space is very generous, and we appreciate the safety features on the SEL model. The vehicle accelerates smoothly and switches between EV and gas mode seamlessly and quietly. The car looks great too, although we would prefer to lose the huge PHEV stickers on the sides. We are surprised it took so long to get to the US after excellent reviews and sales in Europe, but we are delighted it's finally here!

I absolutely love this car! After researching every single plug-in hybrid on the market in 2019, the Outlander PHEV was the only one that had a decent amount of battery range AND cargo space. While the Chevy Volt and Honda Clarity had the best ranges, their trunk space was limited, making it difficult to transport gardening supplies, windsurfing gear, or even luggage for road trips. The plug-in hybrid SUVs with more cargo space, such as the Volvos and BMWs, were way more expensive and offered less battery range. The Outlander PHEV was the perfect replacement for our Prius V, which had a big trunk but was a dud to drive and fouled up the garage with its gas exhaust smell whenever the engine fired up. The Outlander's understated crossover styling is just right, and the interior on the GT trim I have is nice. The tech features are decent, and I appreciate all the safety features, as well as the parking cameras, both front and back. I love the adaptive cruise control on longer drives, and topping off the Outlander whenever it's needed to save on trips to the gas station is a breeze. Of course, there are some things with the Outlander I'd change: 1) It would be great if the driving settings could hold. Right now they reset every time you start up the car, whether it's the regen level or the Auto Hold feature. This can be a bit annoying, until you just give up using the less important features. 2) I would love it if the regen could be bumped up for true one-pedal driving. The highest regen level -- B5, which goes all the way down to B0, which lets the car freewheel -- is just shy of bringing the car to a complete stop.I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so far! While it may not have all the features of the Model Y, Bolt EV or the new Leaf, it sounds like it's meeting your needs perfectly.

Test drive the car and experience the comfort of the leather seats, the smooth ride, and the easy-to-charge electric drive. The car is perfect for city driving, achieving up to 25 miles on electric only and surpassing 500 miles on a single tank in hybrid mode. The car is also environmentally friendly, helping to lower your carbon footprint and protect our winters. The car is heavy but handles well in snowstorms and heavy rains. It has lots of cargo space and is fun to drive. After two years and over 34,000 miles, the car still runs great and has no battery degradation. Charge it twice a day and enjoy the ride!I love my Mitsu PHEV Outlander! It has been a reliable and cost-effective mode of transportation for me. I travel the same 24-mile route every day and have been able to charge for free at work and even at some hotels. On a 220V home charger, it only takes 2 hours to charge, which is perfect for me to eat dinner and walk my dog before unplugging and having 20 miles stored for errands. The car has consistently given me 24-25 miles on electric drive, and sometimes even 27 when the temperature is just right. I have not experienced any battery degradation despite driving the same route for two years. I have also had no mechanical or electrical problems in the 3 years and 9 months that I have owned it, even after towing a trailer for firewood. Overall, I am still having fun and loving my Mitsu PHEV Outlander, and I am confident that it will pay for itself in gas savings over the next 20 years. I will keep you posted on any updates. (Update: 3/30/2022)I've had my Mitsubishi PHEV Outlander for over 4 years and 57,000 miles now, and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues with it. I've even taken it on some long trips to go skiing in Wisconsin, and with gas prices being so high, it was great to average 42 miles per gallon. I'm still loving it and getting great mileage on both electric and gas. The ride is still smooth and quiet, and I haven't had to replace the tires or brake pads yet. It's a shame that some people choose to make their cars loud and polluting with large mufflers instead of investing in making them quieter and more environmentally friendly. I think we could all benefit from a little more harmony on the roads. If you're in the market for a new car, I highly recommend the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Test drive one at your local Mitsubishi dealer today and experience the most harmonious machine on the planet. Despite losing my job due to Covid, I'm grateful to have my trusty Outlander to rely on. With almost 60,000 miles on it now, it's still running smoothly and trouble-free. I'm looking forward to many more years with this car. Update 10/3/2023: I've now driven 67,000 miles and still haven't had any issues. I'm working part-time now and getting older, but my Outlander is still going strong. I change the oil every 7,000 miles, and it still looks clean. I bought it for $30,000 after a rebate in 2017, and it's been almost 5 years now. I see that the new ones are almost $50,000, but I still think it's worth it.Battery still good and auto runs great. I just love to drive it. It's still towing and we're still living in harmony.
